Sunday Update – October 27, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
What a tiring week! We were so busy, it’s hard to remember everything we did.
Monday, everything was turned on its head. My husband took Lulu to our new vet and we found out we’re doing everything wrong. Wrong food, wrong potty training, wrong sleeping. We had a family meeting and immediately fixed some things. But man, the sleeping! It has not gone well. We’re all pretty exhausted around here.
On Tuesday, my husband went into the city in the evening and we were on our own at home. We had pizza and watched the new episodes of Supergirl together.
Wednesday had a lot going on. I took the day off from walking, the cleaning ladies came, and then I went to my chiropractor and acupuncture appointment. My acupuncture appointment was ultimately great but one needle she did was super painful for some reason. Totally strange as that’s never happened to me before. I took the kids to tennis in the afternoon and we got takeout for dinner.
Thursday was another busy day. I was so tired but I rushed off to pottery, got 4 pots trimmed really quickly, and then left early for my last ever orthopedist appointment! It was my last time getting x-rays for my leg and my last time sitting in my doctor’s meat locker of an office. We took a look at what was going on in my leg and everything looks great! 7 months after breaking my leg and I’m well on the road to recovery. I still am battling occasional swelling and my scars still hurt, but overall, it’s not too bad!
Friday was a pretty chill day. I went and got my hair cut in the morning, and in the evening, I took the kids to the school’s Jack O Lantern festival. It was basically a lot of screaming kids running around, donuts and apple cider, and lots of carved pumpkins.
Saturday I was on my own all day long. My husband went fishing with a buddy so I took care of the kids and dog on my own. We did okay. There were some accidents but we went on walks and spent time together.
All throughout the week, I managed to get in several walks in the park that I’m really happy about. Slowly, inch by inch, my hips are starting to heal up from the broken leg incident. You see, in order for my hips to stay happy and not hurt, I need to exercise and stretch several days a week. I had gotten to a point earlier this year, before the broken leg, where they were finally good every day. And then I became sedentary and gained some weight after the accident. Now, I’m working on losing the pounds I gained and getting my hips back in shape. It’ll be a long process but I hope to be there by the New Year.
I also did some writing this week but it was minimal. And then I decided I didn’t like what I had written and decided to change it. This is the penultimate book in the series, I think. I think! There may be one more book after this, possibly a little longer than all the rest in the series. My original plan for 9 books is now down to just 6, but I think it serves the story better. I may need to get the title changed on the last book that I had my cover designer make though! Oops!
What else happened this week?
Lulu continued to charm and frustrate us all at the same time. Puppies! They are so unpredictable. One day they’re a ball of energy all day, and the next, like slugs on the couch.
My leg is continuing to heal but I don’t have to go back to the doctor!
Check out this Dumbledore and Fawkes pumpkin duo!
Autumn is looking beautiful.
I spotted this little house in the base of a tree.
And finally, I got rid of some extra apples we had in the house by coring and slicing them, then putting them in the dehydrator overnight. These are snacks for Lulu and she loves them! She puts them on the floor, dances around them, then eats them happily. Such easy and natural treats for dogs.
Have a great week everyone!

Teaser Tuesday – The Plants Of Rio

It’s another Teaser Tuesday for HIGH FLYGHT!
When it comes to the planet of Rio, everything is a mystery. Not only are the animals strange and alien, but so are the plants, as evidenced by Vivian’s cache of superhero seeds. In HIGH FLYGHT, Vivian treks into the jungles of Rio with the guys on the hunt for something in particular. What they see there both chills them and surprises them…
We break through the underbrush and end up right next to the river again. Out across the expanse of water, only fish are hopping along the currents.
“Here!” Darmit beams as he stretches out his arms to a bush with giant, white bell-shaped flowers hanging from waxy, dark green leaves. “Watch.”
Darmit approaches the bush, and after a few paces, when he’s less than a meter away from it, the bush shudders. First, a tendril stretches out, followed by the branches swaying towards Darmit and his out-stretched hand. A smile broadens his cheeks, and his eyes soften as he edges in closer.
“Aw, listen to it. It’s so sweet.”
I furrow my brow as I strain to hear what he hears, but I hear nothing.
The man is entranced, almost hypnotized. It’s like he’s fallen in love with a puppy or some adorable creature, not an alien plant.
“Hey, maybe you shouldn’t,” Gus insists, reaching out to grab Darmit’s coat.
Darmit blinks himself out of a trance-like state, and he clears his throat. “It’s okay. It’s always like this at first.” He breathes in through his nose, a deep, chest-expanding breath. “It smells like those vanilla pastries I got as a kid in Segundo.”
I shake my head. “I don’t smell anything.”
Darmit’s men stand guard at the river, but I call one over.
“Are you sure your boss is fine?” I ask, keeping my voice low. “Any knocks to the head or anything lately?”
He frowns and shakes his head. “Nah. He’s the same as ever.”
Before I can stop him, Darmit steps into the clutches of this plant, and it wraps its stalks around him. His eyelids droop, and my heart races into a panic. If this plant kills him, we are fucked. I have no idea how to get back or what else he has to say to me.
What happens next? You’ll have to read to find out!

Sunday Update – October 20, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
Another week, another post with a lot of Lulu photos!
Monday was a half day here. It was Indigenous Peoples Day nee Columbus Day and my kids had a half day at school. It was also the day we were to drop Lulu off at the shelter to be spayed. We knew this day would come, just not so fast. My youngest daughter cried when we left her at the shelter and I barely held it together. We went to bed early that night and enjoyed a night without taking the dog out.
Tuesday, our contractors started construction on the backyard. We’re getting it relandscaped, which is something we’ve wanted to do forever and especially since I broke my leg out there. They did demolition out there all day on Tuesday. Then in the afternoon, we went to pick up Lulu from her spaying and formally adopt her! She’s ours now! Yay! That evening she was obviously in pain and having trouble getting through the fog of anesthesia. I had to sit with her and keep my hand on her to stop her from shaking.
Wednesday, we hung out around home to make sure Lulu was recovering from her surgery. She woke at 4am and was whimpering and wanting to lick her sutures, so I held her from 4am to 6am when my husband got up. Then I got the kids off to school and went back to bed. We took turns taking care of her during the day. The kids had tennis in the afternoon so we did that too.
Thursday, Lulu was feeling herself again so I went to pottery in the morning, and then I came home and my husband went into the city for work stuff. I took care of her all afternoon and evening with the kids. We had construction here all day again too. The kids and I started watching the new season of The Flash too!
Friday, I went for a walk in the morning and then ran errands. Backyard landscaping construction continued. I got work done in the afternoon.
Saturday, it was mostly me and the kids at home with Lulu. We took her for a walk in the morning and another in the afternoon. I baked bread and my husband made seafood chowder to go with it for dinner.
Today, we slept in some and I got work done in the morning. At 11am, I took my oldest child to her first ever yoga class. I got her all signed in at an Absolute Beginner Yoga class that’s right by the park I walk in. Then once class started, I left and went on a long, almost 3 mile walk and returned in time to pick her up. It worked out really well! She loved the class and wants to do it again. I listened to a whole audiobook short story on my walk too. I then ran errands with the kids after lunch and a shower. I spent the whole afternoon in the kitchen roasting butternut squash, baking apple crisp, and then cutting up apples for the dehydrator. This evening I’ll be writing.
In writing news, I’ve made some progress on Flyght 5. Not as much as I hoped because the week was so busy. I also was lost on a plot point for this book, then I finally figured it out yesterday! So I wrote out what I want to happen in the next few chapters and I feel settled on that again. I hope to write more tonight. I did change my due date on this book to November 30th instead of the 15th. I need to give myself some breathing room, some space to read or knit. I haven’t picked up my knitting needles since I was at the pool this summer. I desperately need some down time.
What else happened this week?
Here’s what the backyard mostly looked like before we got started. My husband’s garden came out first.
Here’s what it looked like after some demolition.
Here’s a lot of photos of Lulu.
This bread I made was pretty awesome.
Construction progress!! They delivered a ton of stone and then built most of a wall and some stairs!
Roasting happened today!
Progress was made on Flyght 5! And even more after this.
And finally, my park is starting to turn colors. Ah, autumn!

Books To Movies/TV: What Have You Loved or Hated?

We’re going to do something a little different this Friday since I’m knee deep in both puppy craziness and writing Book 5 of the Flyght Series!
I’ve been thinking a lot about my favorite TV and movies and which ones were adapted from books in ways that I loved and I hated. All the books are sci-fi, of course! (My husband calls me Scifi Stephie for a reason.) And some of these adaptations I really loved and others I was underwhelmed by. Let’s get to the books!
LOVED! The Expanse
It’ll come as no surprise that I really love the adaptation of James S. A. Corey’s novels from the Expanse series to The Expanse TV show (once on SyFy and now on Amazon). I was totally captured by the books which I’ve listened to all in audiobook, and now the TV show has done such an excellent adaptation of the novels. It is, hands down, one of the best adaptations I have ever seen.
What do I love about it? The writers really seem to understand the overall story arc of the entire series, and they know what to keep and what to cut. They also don’t twist the story to do things that weren’t in the book. Basically, even though the books have SO MUCH MORE than the TV show, the TV show still does the justice to the series. Plus, the actor who plays Amos, Wes Chatham, is PERFECT for his role. God, he is just great.
OKAY. Dune
I’m writing this blog post a little too soon as I haven’t seen the adaptation that just finished filming, and I’m really hoping it’s great. But there are two adaptations I want to talk about here.
By Source, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=47673027
First, of course, the 80s David Lynch version with Kyle McLachlan. What did I love about this version? The sets, the costumes, and the music, because, duh, TOTO. Other than that, it was okay. I know some people will agree and disagree with me. This is a hotly debated topic in sci-fi circles. I could still rewatch this and enjoy it, though!
By Uploaded by Cayla; digital capture/scan of DVD cover; copyright maintained by publisher or artist, as applicable., https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3393671
Second, my favorite, the SyFy version with Alec Newman and William Hurt. I really enjoyed this version of the book. It wasn’t perfect, for sure, but it was pretty good, especially for a TV rendition of such a classic sci-fi novel. I own these on DVD (and the follow-up CHILDREN OF DUNE because that was done well too) and rewatch them on occasion. Once again, though, it did butcher some of the plot points of the novels, so even though I enjoyed these, I still only give it an “okay” rating.
MEH. Ender’s Game
By Source, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...
I used to be a big fan of Orson Scott Card before I learned of his personal politics (don’t go looking if you don’t want to know) and ENDER’S GAME was one of my favorite books as a kid. When they made a movie out of it in 2013, I was surprised it had taken as long as it had to get to the screen. But in the end, it was meh for me. I liked the special effects and I felt that the casting was done well, but the movie lost a lot of the internal political play and then the ending no longer feels as ground-breaking as it did when the book was first published.
UGH. Childhood’s End
By Source (WP:NFCC#4), Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=49290233
Y’all, I remember reading this book as a kid and totally falling in love with it. It was everything to me. And I was surprised to grow up and find that no one had optioned it for the screen. It had so much potential. Then in 2015, SyFy finally brought CHILDHOOD’S END to TV. I’ll say now what I said then, “PLEASE DO NOT SCREW THIS UP.” Yet, that’s exactly what happened. They took a slim and easy to read book, stretched out the story unnecessarily, and made it boring AF. I almost turned it off before it was over because it was a total snoozefest. Sigh. I was pretty disappointed. I really hope someone does this book justice someday! This adaptation was a total bummer for me.
So tell me, what’s been your favorite movie/TV show based on a book? Or is there one you hated?
I want to know what you think! What have you loved and hated that’s been adapted from a book?
Big thanks to Feed Your Fiction Addiction for the discussion post idea!

Teaser Tuesday – Pack Your Bags

It’s our first Teaser Tuesday for HIGH FLYGHT!
Vivian finds out pretty quickly in BROKEN FLYGHT that she’s going to need a medic on the Amagi, or she’ll risk injury or death without someone to help out. So when she runs across Gus, whom she met in FIRST FLYGHT briefly, and realizes he’s a nurse, she decides to go after him pretty hard. He did flirt with her, after all, so she knows he’s interested. He just needs a little convincing to leave his cushy job at the hospital.
Turns out, though, that Gus has his own reasons for wanting to shake things up and try something new. I won’t spoil it but here’s what happens once he says yes…
When Mom looked at me and told me our future was in my hands, I believed, at that moment, I would never meet anyone I cared about. I would fail at this job so miserably that I’d need to crawl into a hole and stay there forever. That awful experience with Sean almost sealed the deal. And this drama with both Jinzo and Ken? I figured it was a sign I was screwed.
Things are looking up! I’m taking care of business. I’m making the hard decisions. And I’m finding new men to add to my network. Maybe. I guess we’ll see what happens with Gus.
I’m willing to take the chance.
“Food and adventure. I have both.” I smile at him, and his weary face smiles back.
“You know, I saw those old bruises on your leg when I was taking care of the cut you sustained.” He sits back in his seat and sinks in, relief relaxing his shoulders. “And then I saw that rescue video after my shift, the one of you and Jinzo on Rio. If that’s the kind of adventure you’re offering, I might be a little ill-prepared.”
“What? You don’t like wrestling giant squid in your spare time?”
He barks a short laugh. “I’ve honestly never had the opportunity.”
I stand up and chug down the last of my coffee. “Well, pack your bag and get to the spaceport pronto because a life of adventure awaits you on the Amagi.”
His eyes brighten, losing the lost and sullen expression he’s had since I arrived. I think he just realized it’s really happening. He really quit his job. He’s really joining my crew.
“See you in two hours?” I ask, grabbing my bag. I have lots to do to prepare for him. I have a crew to warn, a bedroom to prep, and more food to buy. Another mouth to feed, but I can afford it with a new Gai Reis contract and income from Jinzo and Ken.
“I’ll be there… Captain.”
That title has never sounded so sweet.
As I leave, I glance over my shoulder and see him staring out the window again, this time with a smile on his face.
Welcome to the crew, Gus! We’ll see how you get along with everyone…

Sunday Update – October 13, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
I apologize, once again, for the abundance of Lulu photos. She’s new to this house, so we’re all kinda smitten with her. Pretty much all my writing time lately has been with her by my side, and any other time is spent running after her, taking her outside to do her business, or cleaning up after her.
On Monday, Lulu got sick again. We’re not really sure what happened, but she wasn’t right. She ran a fever, her stools were loose, and then she started puking. We had to take her to the emergency vet again for antibiotics and a top-up of fluids. She was much better by the evening, but that emergency took up most of the day.
On Tuesday, I had my LAST PHYSICAL THERAPY session! Yay! I graduated and gave my PT a big hug. He got me from walking with a cane on my first day to walking 3 miles a day again. I had tears in my eyes when I was done. I ran some errands afterward and spent the rest of the day working.
Wednesday was a holiday, Yom Kippur, so the kids had off. We aren’t Jewish, so we didn’t do anything but take the day off. The cleaning ladies came in the morning, so we set up the pack & play in the basement, and me and the kids hung out down there with the dog while the upstairs was being cleaned. In the afternoon, my youngest child had a friend over. Then we all went to tennis, and I cooked dinner.
Thursday was my busy day. I went to pottery in the morning then came home to hang out with the dog. In the afternoon, we had my youngest’s tutor here.
Friday, I was supposed to go see my doctor but she canceled on me because of a patient emergency (it happens), so I went grocery shopping and then hung out the rest of the day getting work done with the puppy at my side.
Saturday was busy again! My youngest was gone all day for pumpkin picking with a friend. We spent the day getting little stuff done around the house and I worked as much as I could. I didn’t close my computer until after 10 when I had finally got all my words in for the day.
Today, my oldest was away all day at a BBQ, and I worked all day while also cleaning the house, baking bread, taking care of the dog, washing the dog, and printing out stickers for my oldest’s student council campaign.
In work news, I finally crossed the 10k mark on Flyght 5! The story is coming along! I can feel that this one will be one hell of an emotional ride. I’m also almost done with my final proofread of Flyght 4. I’m working on that one at 3 chapters a day, on the side of everything else I’m doing. I should be done with it tomorrow.
What else happened this week?
Behold, Lulu! In all her cute, sleepy glory.
I made a few new things at pottery this week! Next week, it’s going to be all trimming.
My park has been beautiful this week!
And I crossed the 10k mark on Flyght 5! Yay!
Have a great week everyone!

The Yearly NaNoWriMo Decision

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that I’ve participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month in November) many times in the last 8-9 years I’ve been writing.
I really do love NaNoWriMo. The energy in the writing community is always lively and inspiring. I’ve written some of my best work during NaNoWriMos of past, even when I was traveling to visit my parents or trying to get through a sleep-inducing Thanksgiving dinner so I could return home and get my words in.
NaNoWriMo is not just for amateurs. It’s for everyone who wants a little more energy going into the end of the year. It’s a great boost to finish off any lingering deadlines before the end of December. I really love it.
But since I started really writing full time, it’s been harder to plan my projects around and with NaNoWriMo. Last year, I had just finished writing a book when NaNoWriMo came around and I needed a break. This year, I have two books planned that will straddle November. I plan to finish Flyght Book 5 in mid-November, take 2-3 days off to plot Book 6 and then go straight into that, finishing in the first week of January. I have LOTS OF WORDS planned for the end of this year! I have the momentum, so I need to cash in on it.
It is possible I’ll write 50,000 words, though, during the month of November! I’ll keep track and see if I meet the criteria for “winning” NaNoWriMo. We shall see. What’s important, though, is that I get the book I need to write done
So now you know what I’ll be up to the next few months and through the holidays. Will I NaNoWriMo or NaNoWriNO? I’ll keep you posted!

Sunday Update – October 6, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
And once again, my updates this week will mostly be about Lulu Ninja Assassin. Because she’s a puppy and TAKING OVER OUR LIVES. Lol
Monday was a rough day. It was Rosh Hashanah, so the kids had off school. We started out nicely but then I took Lulu to get her next round of shots and deworm meds, and they really didn’t agree with her. She spent the whole afternoon puking and shaking uncontrollably. She was so sick. We ended up having to take her to the emergency vet in the early evening for steroids and IV fluids. Poor thing. She was much better by bedtime though.
Tuesday it was back to school and Picture Day for both kids. My morning was nuts but the rest of the day was good. I had PT in the morning, and we got the weekly CSA veggies and it was a lot!
Wednesday was National Walk to School Day, so I did that with the youngest kid, and then I went on my own walk. I came home and my husband left to go golfing. I hung out with Lulu most of the day and then took the kids to tennis in the afternoon.
Thursday was my busy day. I had pottery in the morning, then in the afternoon, my husband stayed home with the youngest child who had tutoring and I took the oldest child to the dentist to get a cavity filled. In the evening, I went to the middle school for Back to School Night from 7-9pm. I was beat by the time I got home.
Friday was the publication of BROKEN FLYGHT! I celebrated with a decked-out bagel at home instead of going out for breakfast like I normally do. I had a 9am meeting at the youngest’s school that I couldn’t miss, so it was the best I could do. I spent the day working as usual, but it was nice to see reviews for BROKEN FLYGHT posted and posts on Facebook about it.
Yesterday, I was at home with Lulu all day while my husband took the kids to Long Island for a family birthday party. She’s still not old enough to be crated or left all day long, so I sacrificed and stayed home. We had a good day together! She only had a few accidents inside and I took her outside for lots of walks.
Today, I finally got to sleep in a little, but I’ve had a headache all day. I’ve done everything I can to get rid of it short of painkillers. I went on a walk. I fed the headache water, caffeine, and sugar. But I’m still sitting here with it right behind my eyes. We also had a little scare with Lulu today. She stepped on something painful and hurt her front left paw. She was whimpering and in a lot of pain. We held her and rested her most of today, and she seems to be okay now.
In work news, I’m working on Flyght Book 5! Like all books I start, it’s slow going in the first 10k words as I figure out how to structure this novel. But I’m writing and I’m moving forward! I’m also halfway through my proofreading of Book 4. I should be done with that by the end of the week! Then I can send it off to my proofreaders and call that one done too. Tonight, I need to identify good quotes from HIGH FLYGHT for teasers and import my words to Scrivener from my Neo. Then I need to finish off my SFR Station tasks for the week.
What else happened this week?
The park is looking pretty right about now!
I’m working on throwing a lot of pottery pieces this year. I’m aiming for quantity and hoping that most of them make it out of the kiln in one piece. I want to test how good I am at producing the same thing over and over consistently. This week I made a new shape (an urn/vase), and then I made three low bowls all the same shape. Hopefully they’ll be a nice set when I’m done.
It was National Walk to School Day on Wednesday and everyone in the neighborhood walked together.
We got Lulu her own real bed. She was sleeping on blankets as we trained her where her bed was. Most dogs don’t like to soil their own sleeping space, but sometimes it takes a while to figure out where that space is. She gets it now.
This was the day Lulu got really sick. Poor thing. Just looking at this photo makes me sad.
But here she is in better spirits and times when she’s actually awake too! Though she’s easier to photograph if she’s sleeping. Lol.
I hope you all have a great week!
