The Expanse, Outlander Casting News, and Christmas.

Hey Friends!

Last night was the kickoff episode of SyFy's Big Grownup Show In Space, The Expanse. A little background: it's a series of novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (Under the pen name James S.A. Corey). It's relatively near future space opera that highlights some immutable truths: humans will still find ways to screw each other regardless of where we're living, be it Earth, the moons of Jupiter, or a barren space station in between. The novels are good, and were cl...

New Family Member: Big Mike

We adopt, rescue, call it what you will. In any case, we have a herd of critters at any given time. I have experience with giant breeds, and find them to be sweet, goofy, and loving.

So, there was a need and we had room at the inn.

Meet Michael Dean Carr-Maggert. He is a puppy. He is huge. He's getting hugerer with each passing day.

He also has little regard for doggie gates. In fact, they aren't doing much good at all.

Not to be outdone, our two additions prior to Big Mike, Dixie and Truma...

Happy Thanksgiving! Now Let's Eat Pie!

Is it just me, or does life get better as we get older?

Thanks to everyone who's helped make this a memorable year (already) with six weeks to go. Thanks for the friendship, books, and kindness at so many author events. I'm looking forward to next year, and will have the schedule out soon.

Fun fact: I WILL be bringing pie to author events from now on. I make several so let's talk flavor in advance to maximize our pie experience. Pie: SRYS BIZNESS.

I hope your Thanksgiving is warm and welcoming.

C...

2016: Goals

I sent Halfway Bitten off to beta readers, then it's off to my fine editor Jennifer Clark Sells.

What's next?

Well, I'm going to read a little. I'm going to eat some pie. I'm going to drink some coffee, and finalize my author events for next year.

And then *cracks knuckles*, I'm going to write. I have three novels planned for next year. They will be as follows:

Book Five of The Fearless, in which a vicious killer from antiquity comes to Florida looking for his ancient weapon. One probl...

The Knock-Down Rain

For lack of a better term, that's what I'm calling our rain. Because it knocked down every leaf-like structure in the universe.

Up until two days ago, we were in that glorious stretch of weather that makes everything seem possible!

The sun was shining. The breeze was light. The sky, that perfect October blue that faded into the brilliance of stars I'd forgotten were so present. In a fit of achievement, we moved furniture purchased six months ago.

After removing somewhere between ten a...

Tuckerizing: The Art of Revenge

Tuckerization: To base a character in your novel on a real person. Popularized by Wilson Tucker.

Terry-orize: To base a character in my novel on a real person who deserves to be dealt with harshly.

Options include, but are not limited to: Dismemberment. Consumption by animals (real or imaginary), crushing, falling, disease, parasitical infestation, forced wearing of skinny jeans, and ironic tattooing. Also, death. LOTS of death.

I asked everyone on my mailing list if they would give me suggestio...

Halfway Bitten: Cover Shoot

With over 1000 images to look at, I've got a busy weekend.

Kat Bradshaw makes my ideas look good. My model, Alexis, makes a potato sack look good.

Together, they combined forces to create Carlie McEwan's  First Official Photo Extravaganza. You can tell it's serious because of the italics.

Here are a few shots from behind the scenes. What do you think?

"What do you use for such amazing skin, Alexis?"

"I eat a lot of Taco Bell." #truestory

Here we see her in the wild.

"Do you own Docs?" I a...

SUPERMOON OF DOOM: PMS EDITION

What is it?

A moon, but Super. And an eclipse, and apparently some sort of excuse for behaving like a rampaging gang of Visigoths, because blood.

This is a Supermoon:I bring the assurance of your doom. And salty snacks.

And these are Visigoths:Do you think she's prettier than me?

Which brings us to the truly terrifying part of the SuperBloodMoon of Doom.

By my math, approximately twelve percent of women will be experiencing PMS during this event. Within the United States, that means around 17 mill...

Breast Cancer, Mom, and the Number 19

Mom died nineteen years ago today. Breast cancer. She got sick when I was a kid-- it was a rare time when she cried, but she did so in the car while we were going somewhere unimportant.

"Why are you crying, mom?"
"They found a lump in my breast."
A short sentence with long consequences.
She was sick for years-- after six surgeries, she said, "I don't want them to cut me any more."
So, we didn't let them.
For some people 20 is a more important marker based on our fing...

Halfway Sexy: Writing An Assertive Love Scene

Carlie McEwan is smart, tough, principled, and. . . young. She's in her early twenties, so life is still unfolding for her like a series of doors that unlock as she grows.

Her lover is not young. In fact, Wulfric is more than a thousand years old, but he's emotionally young in the sense that he's been alone. Cut off from the world, and his own self.

I have to ask myself how they come together. How do I show Carlie's desire meshing with Wulfric's need of her?

Here's a sample from the next v...
