First Puck Drop of the 2013-14 NHL Season
The puck drops tonight and we have a three game slate. A pretty small slate of games but it still the opening night of hockey season. A few sites are offering some free fantasy nhl contests to let you try out their sites.
I don’t claim to know what I’m doing when it comes to NHL, but LHitch is a man who does. Check out his recommended NHL plays today over at Insider Fantasy.
FanThrowdown $110 NHL Freeroll
Things you need to know about NHL on FanThrowdown: Plus/Minus is not a category. This evens the playing field for all those guys on the crappy teams that churn out a -1 or -2 nearly every night. Also Goalie wins are only worth 2 points on FTD with more emphasis on Saves and Goals Allowed. Yet again, evening the playing field for players on the weak teams. Give this site a go and sign up below:
StarStreet $69 NHL Freeroll
Quite fitting that the Playboy Mansion qualifier tickets on Starstreet cost $69. The winner of this free NHL contest earns a $69 Ticket into the Week 5 NFL Qualifier. Starstreet ups the ante for NHL and makes the scoring as high as possible. Make sure you don’t start anybody that is injured because you’ll be missing out on a lot of needed points as these matchups get pretty high-scoring.
DraftKings $10 NHL Freeroll
Not a huge payout but the Top 5 in this one earn Step-1 Tickets which can get you started at DraftKings.
DraftStreet $500 NHL Freeroll
This contest doesn’t start until Thursday but you have to love the $500 worth of free money they are giving away. Give this one a try as DraftStreet is one of the Daily Fantasy Sports industry leaders.
Star Fantasy Leagues $5 Daily Freeroll
Star Fantasy Leagues is making a lot of nice changes to their user interface and also providing daily freerolls. Go check out the site now and try your luck at the Freeroll to get started:

MLB Playoffs: Dodgers Odds-on Favorite?
The 2013 MLB season has come to an end and the Playoffs are set to start tomorrow. The Rangers and Rays are still fighting for the last spot in the Playoffs but the rest of the field has been set. According to Baseball Prospectus, the Tigers have a 21% chance of winning the World Series. That is 7 percent higher than the next highest, the Boston Red Sox (14%). Who is your favorite to win the World Series?
The Baseball Prospectus view is quite different from the view from Las Vegas which has the Dodgers set as odds-on 5/2 favorites. Maybe there is some opportunity to make some money here. The MLB odds at Topbet Sportsbook provide great odds if you want to know who is favored on a game-by-game basis.
How do these teams stack up from a fantasy baseball perspective? Let’s take a look at the Fantasy MVP’s from each position and see if it can tell us anything about the 2013 MLB Playoffs.
Catcher
Carlos Santana: 75 runs, 20 Home Runs, 74 RBI, 3 Steals and a .268 Average from the backstop position. The only players close to Santana’s position were Mike Napoli and Victor Martinez. Napoli may have been catcher eligible but he did not catch a single game in 2013. V-Mart was behind the plate for only 3 games this season as he spent the majority of his games as DH.
First Base
Chris Davis: This was a close one between Crush and Paul Goldschmidt. In the end, I had to give the fantasy first base honors to Crush and his 53 Home Runs. The season line of 103-53-138 with 4 steals and a .286 average really came out of nowhere. Sure, he belted 33 home runs and drove in 85 runs last year but this is an another level.
Second Base
Matt Carpenter: Talk about a diamond in the rough. The Cardinals organization tends to churn out high-caliber players like this on a yearly basis. Must be something in the water in St. Louis. The usual suspects of Cano, Kipnis, and Pedroia all finished pretty close behind.
Third Base
Miguel Cabrera: Miggy was on another level when it came to fantasy third basemen in 2013. Cabrera won the Triple Crown in 2012 but in many ways his 2013 stats were even better. Crazy. A line of 103-44-137 ain’t too shabby.
Shortstop
Ian Desmond: Raise your hand if you had Desmond as the top shortstop coming into 2013. Liars. Damn liars. On a related note, I want to take this time to pat myself on the back with my Segura breakout prediction. While most ‘experts’ didn’t even rank Segura coming into the season, or put him in the 20-25 range, I said this:
“Segura is no sure-thing but I wouldn’t put 10 Home Runs, 30 Stolen Bases out of the equation, either.”
Segura finished the year with 12 Home Runs and 44 Stolen Bases. I hope you listened to me early in the season and drafted Segura or at least scooped him up early.
Outfield
Mike Trout: Flat-out stud. Nothing needs to be said about Trout that hasn’t already been said. If you ignore position scarcity, Trout is your #1 fantasy performer. Trout followed up his Rookie of the Year campaign with an equally impressive Sophomore campaign.
Andrew McCutchen: McCutchen is finally getting noticed this year as the Pirates made the Playoffs for the first time since 1403. I wish I wouldn’t have sold his Rookie card so early in his career because the NL MVP that will likely be added to his resume this year couldn’t hurt the value.
Shin-Soo Choo: This last outfield spot isn’t quite as obvious. Mr. Choo choo train did a little bit of everything, and that is why he earns the #3 spot in the 2013 All-Fantasy team. Choo scored 107 runs, hit 21 Home Runs, drove in 54 runs, stole 20 bases and hit for a .285 average. You would like to see move RBIs but hard to argue with his 5-tool production.
Starting Pitcher
Clayton Kershaw: A no-brainer for NL Cy Young. That will be Cy Young #2 for young Kershaw. This will be his first Playoffs since 2009. Kershaw has a rather pedestrian 5.87 ERA in his 15 career playoff innings. That should go wayyyy down after this year.
Taking a look at this All-Fantasy team, it doesn’t tell us much about the Playoffs but it was fun to look at. We can see that the A’s, Red Sox, Rays, Rangers, and Braves all did not have a player make the 2013 All-Fantasy team. That may actually be good come playoff time since baseball is a team effort. In the end, pitching wins ballgames in the Playoffs and that is why the Dodgers are the odds-on favorites to win the 2013 World Series.

A FanDuel Rookie’s Journey Week 4 #BeginnersLuck
Week 3 was another some-good-some-bad week for me, as Jordan Cameron had a career 3 TD game against my lowly Vikings, making me think nothing but Benjamins and the Vegas strip, but alas, Mike Wallace, Chris Johnson and others pulled me down again into around the middle of the pack by week’s end. The good news is that it’s only been 3 weeks and I feel like I’ve made some absolute home run picks each week, so I feel confident in that sticking with what I’ve been doing will lead to good things by season’s end.
For Week 4 for Fan Duel’s FFFC Qualifier Contest, I went with Eli Manning as my QB. Yep, that Eli Manning who was blanked 38-0 last Sunday by a mediocre Panthers team and who is now 0-3 on the season. Why would I make such a pick? Well, this is still the Giants team that won two Super Bowls, it’s still the same resilient Eli Manning and the same gritty always-finds-a-way-to-go-9-7 Tom Coughlin coach. The Chiefs have been red hot this season, but are due for a letdown after Andy Reid squashed his former brotherly love in Philly last week, and I’m betting hard this week that the Giants win that game outright, captained by the younger Manning. Oh yeah, and since about 50-60% or more of all Fan Duel-ers will surely spend a crazy high $9,900 on the blazin’ hot Peyton Manning this week, I’ll happily spend $2,800 less on Eli and use that to beef up other positions.
For RBs for Week 4 I went with Matt Forte and Lamar Miller. Forte has some nice value on his side as the t-6th highest salary in Fan Duel, but ranked as 4th in Fantasy Football Nerd’s weekly rankings, and I see him slicing up that Lions D this weekend. I took Lamar Miller again this week as I’m a big believer that he’s going to have a bust out game sooner than later, and even though the Dolphins abandoned the run too early in their comeback win vs the Falcons last week, his near 8 yards per carry in that game were highly encouraging.
For my WRs for Week 4 I went with Antonio Brown, Victor Cruz and A.J. Green. Even though I don’t typically like to take a guy off a huge performance the week before (Brown had nearly 200 yards receiving and 2 TDs vs the Bears last week), I don’t mind doing so when he’s playing my yep-they-seriously-gave-up-31-points-to-somebody-called-Brian-Hoyer-and-the-Browns-last-week Vikings (as you can probably tell, I’m pretty down on my Vikes this year). I like Victor Cruz this week for the same reasons I like Eli (see above) and I love AJ Green as in his last performance vs the Browns he had 7 catches for 135 yards and 2 TDs. The dude is just an all-out beast.
For my TE this week I went with Heath Miller for the same reasons I took Jordan Cameron last week and Martellus Bennett the week before— my Vikings are absolutely clueless on how to stop a TE, so Heath it is.
For my Kicker I took Josh Brown and for my Defense I selected the Giants. Yep, going all or nothing on the G-Men this week as you can probably tell. G-Men, G-Men, G-Men! 1 and 3, 1 and 3, 1 and 3! #moneyline
Good luck to all this week.

Start Em’ & Sit Em’: Week 4
Welcome to week 4 and our first taste of bye weeks. You had the luxury of a full range of lineup choices for the first 3 weeks, but now depth comes into play for owners. We get eased into everything with only the Packers and Panthers on bye this week, but that still takes several key guys out of consideration for your lineup. We also are finally starting to get a decent feel for matchup considerations, as teams have all had 3 games to help us to see how good or bad their defenses are. There have been less surprise players through the beginning of the season, so depth may be an issue for you. Let’s see how we can help with some of your tougher lineup decisions.
START EM’
Colin Kaepernick: Two straight duds may give owners pause, but I think this just makes Kaepernick and his fellow 49ers hungry this week. A trip to St. Louis to take on the Rams as well as the return of Vernon Davis should help this week.

Big Ben with Big Ben. Which one do you think will have a big game on Sunday?
Ben Roethlisberger: In London with his namesake, Big Ben gets a Minnesota defense which was just shredded by Brian Hoyer. Heath Miller should continue to see more snaps as he heals up from his surgery to add to Pittsburgh’s other passing weapons. Hey, it’s not like the Steelers can run the ball.
Lamar Miller: The Saints aren’t as pitiful on defense as they have been in recent years, but they can still be run on. Miller is a dicey play as he has split time with Daniel Thomas despite much better statistics. Eventually the Dolphins have to come to their senses right?
Frank Gore: Both Gore and myself were perplexed as to why the 49ers suddenly went away from a running game that was working against the Colts on Sunday. He made it known he wasn’t pleased, and should get plenty of looks against the Rams who were just run over by DeMarco Murray last week.
Doug Martin: It seems like there is no way he could have been a top-10 back through the first three weeks, but he is. Odd, how disappointing a top-10 player can be. Well don’t get cute and play around with him in your lineup. With rookie Mike Glennon starting this week they will need to lean on Martin.
Torrey Smith: Smith is on pace to set career highs in receptions and yards, and the TDs will be soon to follow.
Josh Gordon: What do you get in return for a 10 catch, 146 yard, 1 TD performance? A ranking somewhere in the 30-40 range?! That’s where I’m seeing Gordon on most sites. Look, I’m not expecting another explosion like last week, but Gordon is very talented and it’s not like the Cincinnati defense is so amazing you can’t throw on them.
Eric Decker: Decker has rebounded nicely after his week 1 dud. Hopefully you didn’t panic after week 1 and trade him. Defenses can’t key in on any 1 WR, leaving plenty of room for Decker to work. With Peyton Manning, he doesn’t need much space.
Heath Miller: He’s back and had a week to get back into the swing of things. He’s one of Ben’s favorite targets in the red zone and is facing a Vikings defense that has given up 6 TDs to TEs through 3 games.
Coby Fleener: With Allen out of the picture, Fleener has the TE targets to himself. San Fran’s stellar LBs kept him in check last week but the Jags are a different story. Plus, Luck likes to look his way in the Red Zone.
Chiefs D/ST: Eli has been fairly turnover-prone so far this year and the Giants’ offensive line has let plenty of pressure through.
SIT EM’

Several Texans will find their way to my bench this week.
Matt Schaub: Schaub did not look good last week, and gets a turn against Seattle this week. I’m staying away.
Andy Dalton: The Browns have an excellent pass rush and a shutdown corner to shadow his best target. I don’t think he’ll be as useless as Schaub, but he’s not a guy to use as a Rodgers or Newton fill-in.
Chris Johnson: The Jets are a tough matchup. He has yet to find the endzone this year and I’m not expecting that to change this week.
Fred Jackson/CJ Spiller: To me, it doesn’t matter if Spiller makes it back or not. He hasn’t been running well when he’s been healthy and Fred Ex might not fare well against Baltimore if he ends up with the gig to himself.
Arian Foster: I;m not sure how long this time-share will continue, but for this week it worries me enough along with a big matchup to consider sitting Foster if I have plenty of options.
Andre Johnson: Banged up against a very tough Seattle secondary. Could be a long day for the Houston offense.
Vincent Jackson: He’s on hold for me right now with a rookie QB and a bad matchup. Let’s see what the kid’s got before you jump in.
Pierre Garcon: Call it a hunch, but Garcon has yet to find the endzone which doesn’t help in a standard league.
Owen Daniels: This makes the 4th Texan on this list. I think I’m down on Houston this week.
Jared Cook: He’s living off of a huge week 1 and gets a less than great matchup against the 49ers linebacking unit.
Patriots D/ST: Atlanta has an offense that can make a good defense beatable. Matt Ryan should have a good game in this one, and the Falcons RBs aren’t that bad without Steven Jackson.

Using Vegas Lines in Daily Fantasy Sports
It’s no secret that Las Vegas handicappers are good at what they do. Week after week, year after year, they set game lines for NFL Matchups that consistently fool NFL fans everywhere. It is a lot of fun to try and beat the bookmakers but few can succeed.
Three weeks into the 2013 NFL Season, and most people are anointing the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks as the Super Favorites. For good reason, too. Both teams are living up to their lofty expectations early in the season. Check out the Super Bowl Point Spreads to see who vegas is favoring for the Super Bowl and also who they are favoring in Week 4 matchups.
Let’s take a look at some of these Las Vegas point spreads and see what they can tell us from a Daily Fantasy Sports perspective:
Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars (+9)
The Colts just made a huge splash in the trade market and then pulled off a giant upset @ San Francisco. Will they keep this momentum going or will there be a let-down game this week as they travel back across the country to facely the lowly Jaguars? Vegas has the Colts favored by 9 points this week but it looks like the perfect opportunity for Jacksonville to steal one.
Fantasy Implications: A line of 9 in favor of the Colts suggests that Andrew Luck and the gang will all be solid plays this week. Being favored by nearly double-digits and facing a horrendous Jacksonville offense makes the Colts Defense a great play this week, as well.
Dallas Cowboys @ San Diego Chargers (+1.5)
Neither of these teams has a secondary. Both teams are surrendering huge yardage to opposing quarterbacks early in the season. Neither team has been a slouch on offense, either. This one has all the makings of a shootout.
Fantasy Implications: The small line of less than a field goal means this one should be close. I already said I think it will be a shootout. A shootout with a small point spread is perfect for Wide Receivers. Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, and Eddie Royal are all big plays in Week 4. Who knows, Vincent Brown might even decide to have a coming out party.
New York Jets @ Tennessee Titans (-4)
Don’t be fooled by last weeks offensive output by the Jets, they are still averaging 5.7 Adjusted Yards per Pass Attempt on the season. That is 7th worst in the league, and is not a good indicator of future success on the offensive side of the ball. The Titans look good to go in this one.
Fantasy Implications: The Jets offense is turning the ball over on 18.6% of their offensive drives. That is the 5th highest percentage in the league. Now they hit the road and face a slightly above-average Titans defense. That makes the Titans Defense a very good daily fantasy play for Week 4 as they should get at least two takeaways in this game. These teams will likely struggle to reach 40 points this week, so I can’t recommend any other players from this matchup.

Start Em’ & Sit Em’: Week 3

Richardson will find himself in blue this weekend after yesterday's blockbuster trade.
Let try take 3 at this week’s column. I had everything lined up to publish last night when I got the news about Trent Richardson being traded to the Colts for a 2014 1st round pick. If you haven’t picked this up from previous columns, I am a Browns fan and last night I was utterly shocked. I couldn’t believe what I was reading and the texts from friends came pouring in. Aside from Richardson being in this column, I just needed to take a break from football last night to let everything settle.
Real world football side of this trade aside, it does have some fantasy implications. Trent had been underutilized by the Browns through the first 2 games of this season and this gives him a fresh start with an organization that is clearly enamored with his abilities. Key to his value last season was his talents in the passing game. This specifically should pick up with his move to Indianapolis and switch to Andrew Luck as his QB. Through 2 week Richardson was looking like a draft bust for his owners, but his new surroundings give him a new chance to come through on his promise. As for the Browns, indications are that they will sign Willis McGahee to fill in at least for the rest of this season. I see no reason why he can’t fill in Trent’s production in the running game giving the Browns 3.6 ypc along with 7 or 8 TDs. He won’t be involved much in the passing game in all likelihood, but he is worthy of a pickup if he’s out there in your league.
START EM’
Matt Schaub: Schaub gets to face a Baltimore defense that has struggled against TEs while most of Schaub’s TD passes have been to his TEs. This is a matchup to exploit this week.
Andy Dalton: Green Bay has struggled thus far to contain their opponents’ passing games. Dalton has the tools to keep that trend going with AJ Green, Gio Bernard and Tyler Eifert.

Get used to the name Joique Bell, you'll be hearing it a lot on Sunday.
Joique Bell: Bell should get enough run even if Reggie Bush plays to make it worth a spot in your flex slot against a putrid Washington defense.
Alfred Morris: If the Redskins want any chance at avoiding a 0-3 start they need to establish the running game early and ride it. This would limit the time that they would have their defense on the field and control the clock. Luckily they have an excellent running back to pull off something like this.
Chris Johnson: Johnson has been ho-hum so far this year. Not horrible, not great either. I think he punches through for a TD this week with Greene banged up and rewards his fantasy owners for their patience.
Steve Johnson: Another Johnson makes the list. Stevie has been EJ Manuel’s go to guy in the redzone the first two weeks and I think he keeps that going in week 3 against a Jets defense he traditionally does pretty well against. He will enjoy no longer being stuck on Revis Island as well.
DeAndre Hopkins: Hopkins showed why everyone was so high on him during the preseason last week with a huge performance. He may be the final piece in what looks like a great Texans offense this year. He can produce with or without Andre Johnson opposite of him so don’t let Johnson’s concussion worry you.
Josh Gordon: I’ll admit, things aren’t looking good for Gordon. This was supposed to be a week where he cam back to help fix a struggling Browns offense. Well, now he comes back to an offense with a 3rd string QB and no running game. Someone has to get yards right? My money is on Gordon and Jordan Cameron being those guys.
Owen Daniels: See Matt Schaub above. Daniels is primed for a big game.
Tony Gonzalez: Gonzalez has a matchup to be able to finally deliver on his draft day promise. He was drafted as a TE1 and he should finally produce like one this week.
Minnesota D/ST: Like mentioned earlier, they will be facing an offense with a 3rd string QB and 2nd or 3rd string RB.
SIT EM’

Poor Tom, he has no friends to play with.
Tom Brady: Yes, Tom Brady. He’s going up against a Tampa defense that just held Drew Brees in check. I don’t think getting Gronk back will make much of a difference. Even though many of Brady’s struggles this year aren’t directly his fault, he has struggled and this is not a good matchup. Stay away.
Phillip Rivers: I don’t think Rivers can keep up the pace he is on. The ball has to drop at some point and this could be the week.
Adrian Peterson: Deep breath everyone… No, you should not actually sit AP. I repeat, do not ACTUALLY sit AP. However, I would not expect big things from him this week against a very good and underrated Browns run defense who has stuffed 2 of 2 runners this season. AP has been very pedestrian himself. Take away his first carry of the season and he is averaging less than 3 yards a carry. Not a good recipe for this week.
Trent Richardson: While I expect Richardson’s value to rise with his move to Indy, he might not be a safe play for week 3 with only 2 days to learn the playbook. While RB is one of the easier positions to step into, it is a quick turnaround and he will probably split time with Ahmad Bradshaw for this week. expect stats similar to what he’s put up the first 2 weeks in this one.
James Starks: This week’s waiver wire darling, Starks may have already enjoyed his best week of the season. There is a reason he wasn’t getting much play with Lacy healthy. He should be owned, not started.
Eddie Royal: Royal is another guy who may have given fantasy owners his best already. You will be playing him for his week 1 and 2 performances, but he can’t keep scoring on have of his touches.
Reggie Wayne: I’m expecting a line much closer to his week 2 performance than his week 1 in a tough matchup against the 49ers.
Cecil Shorts: I’ve heard that Seattle has some pretty good corner backs. Shorts is the only real receiving threat for Jacksonville until Justin Blackmon gets back so the defense should be keyed in to him.
Kyle Rudolph: Rudolph is an extreme boom or bust player and I think it’ll be a bust against the Browns D.
Kellen Winslow: Week 2 showed a return to normal. Guess what? He’s dealing with some injury issues. His health lasted all of one week.
Washington D/ST: A unit that wasn’t that bad last year… This year, it’s a whole different story. If you somehow still find yourself owning them you can go ahead and cut bait.
Put this Start/Sit advice to good use in some Weekly Fantasy Football Contests.
A FanDuel Rookie’s Journey Week 3 #BeginnersLuck
Week 2 was another shoulda-coulda-woulda week for me, as I had Aaron Rodgers (who could’ve thrown for over 600 yards in that pack-it-in-early win over the Redskins if he wanted to), as well as LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, both of whom again put up big numbers. Unfortunately, the rest of my team snoozed their way through the week and I was again left with just a mediocre week; however, I’m taking the positives from picking some major point producers again last week and am totally pumped to dominate it here in Week 3.
For Week 3 in the FFFC Fan Duel contest, I went with Matthew Stafford as my QB. They’re playing the Washington Redskins who can’t seem to stop anybody so far this season. Also, Fantasy Football Nerd has Stafford ranked as the #4 QB for Week 3, but Fan Duel had him in the 10th slot in terms of salary, so I know there’s some serious value there. Add all that up plus an over/under of 50 in the Lions/Skins game and it’ll be fireworks all afternoon in DC.
For RBs I went with Lamar Miller and Chris Johnson. I believe that Lamar is one of the most underrated RBs in the league and I really like the way this Dolphins team is playing right now. I picked Johnson because the Titans are playing some salty good football so far this season and they’ve been feeding Johnson the rock consistently (50 carries thru 2 games).
For WRs I went with Mike Wallace, Wes Welker and Julian Edelman. I took Wallace because I believe the Dolphins will defeat the Falcons at home to move to 3-0, and that Wallace will see plenty of balls thrown his way. I selected Welker because Peyton obviously has been on fire this season and Welker tends to shine in those primetime games, and Monday night vs the woeful Raiders seems like a perfect opportunity for him to shine. I took Edelman because hey, Brady is going to be throwing the ball plenty vs the sloppy Bucs, and he’s got to be throwing it to someone. Also, Fantasy Football Nerd has Edelman as the #2 ranked receiver for the week for PPR, and his salary on Fan Duel is well down the charts. Talk about value!
For my TE I selected Jordan Cameron as my Vikings royally suck at defending against TEs (see Martellus Bennett’s performance last week). I took Blair Walsh as my kicker and the Jets defense.
It’s only Thursday and I already can’t wait for this weekend’s action. Good luck to everyone in week 3.

Matt Forte $11 GPP – Fantasy Aces teamed up with Matt Forte to bring you this weekly GPP contest. There are 100 spots in this tournament but they are filling fast.
FanThrowdown
This is becoming one of my favorite sites to play fantasy football on. They have a ton of Guaranteed Prize Pools including Satellites, Qualifiers, Double Ups, GPP’s, you name it. There isn’t one contest I would recommend over the others but the $11 FTDFC Qualifier is a good one, the $11 Flea Flicker is at a great price point and has a big potential payout, and the Guaranteed Double Ups are a good way to keep your bankroll happy.
DraftStreet
This is one of the top dawgs in the DFS industry so they have plenty of cash to throw around. That is why you should join their $1,000 Freeroll:
DraftKings
First time depositors get 100% Deposit Bonus and a Free Entry into the Fantasy Football Millionaire Qualifier. Yes, they are offering $1 Million to the winner of that contest. Crazy, right? Crazy awesome. They have multiple weekly freerolls that give away “Step 1 Tickets” that can get you started at DraftKings.
Fantasy Feud
Fantasy Feud is offering the Feud of Champions which will pay out $30K to the winner at the end of the season. It might be worth joining a few of those qualifiers. If you want to try out the site first, they offer a couple weekly Freerolls with $150 up for grabs.
