C’est vendredi!

1. Movie premieres are crazy. I went to two this week. This might make it sound like I go to them all the time, but I don’t. It just so happened to be a busy kind of a week. On Sunday, we went to the premiere of Saving Mr. Banks.

It was the last film in the BFI film festival, and thus was kind of a to do. We had to be in black tie. Not so easy for this girl, but I hustled and pulled an outfit together. The movie was really sweet. (I cried twice.) I saw in the bathroom, and as she...

Writing Tip: Structure Part Four–Flesh it out!

Last time I broke down Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet from his book Save the Cat. But I only used 15 out of those 40 note cards. So, what’s the deal with those other 25 cards? Well, today, that’s what I’m going to talk about.

Let’s break down the structure into three acts. The first act should have ten cards. The second should have twenty. And the third act should have ten. The good news is that we’ve already dealt with fifteen of those cards! Woohoo!

Five of those cards were for the first act. Whic...

Oh, sweet Friday…

1. I went to Selfridges this week. It’s a pretty fantastic department store. Maybe not as luxurious as Harrods, but awesome all the same. They have a food hall, much like Harrods, but it has different sections of food from around the world. The American aisle was pretty pathetic.

I mean come on. Couldn’t we do better than this processed junk? Le sigh.

2. This made me smile:

Hawt!

3. This coming week I have a couple of Hollywoodish things to do. Two premieres. One of which is black tie. This might...

Keep Calm and Dance in the Rain

1. This week I went to my last and final show at the Globe for this season. Yes, I might be back next season, but for now, my love affair with the Globe is over. Le sigh.

Thankfully, the show (Macbeth) was awesome! It was a good last show. And I got to see it with a super awesome friend. Good times all around.

And until next season, I’m going to have to get my Shakespeare dose somewhere else. Like maybe with James Earl Jones and Much Ado! So in!

2. The sun has been on my mind. Meaning that I mis...

Writing Tip: Structure, Part Three-Beating It Out

The last two weeks, we resigned ourselves to doing a bit of pre-writing before jumping into a new project, and realized (hopefully) that brainstorming (with friends) and asking all the questions you can about your characters and your world before entering the outlining phase was a grand idea.

Here is the next step. Please keep in mind that this is just my next step. You’re more than welcome to do this differently. But I’ve taught this way to more than a few writers, and they’ve always come out...

Writing Tip: Structure, Part Two–Brainstorming

So, I’m a day late on this. Yesterday was crazy! Borough Market, a matinee at The Globe and sushi at Nobu. I should’ve planned ahead and written this before I went out, but you live and learn. ;)

Back onto the topic of structure:

Last week, I talked about mentally preparing to start plotting and planning. It can go a little against the grain for some, but it’ll save you in the long run! I promise!

This week, I thought I’d mention one more step before you start to outline: Brainstorm. Think everyt...

At last…Friday!

1. These brothers set the bar for wedding toasts.

2. I went back to The Globe yesterday for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was awesome.

I know that’s totally nerdy, and I really don’t care. I love Shakespeare. Even if I almost never remember to put an “e” at the end of his name. My mom took me to see ’s Much Ado About Nothing at the movie theater when I was ten, and I LOVED it.

I’ve been an addict ever since. Although, Much Ado is for sure my favorite. Yesterday, I bought a manga v...
