BRAVE-ish Foodie Adventures in PRINT: Jewish Journal

Thank you to Debra Eckerling and the Jewish Journal for this print full page article about ME and MY MEMOIR! Brave-ishs Lisa Niver: Traveling, Foodie Adventures & Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins Recipeby Debra L. Eckerling

Food and travel go hand in hand.

The thing most people reference when they come back from traveling is the great food experiences that theyve had, travel writer and Jewish Journal blogger Lisa Niver, author of Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, and Feeling Fearless After Fifty, told the Journal. One of the best things to do besides try new food is to try new food with someone It makes a big impression because it impacts so many of your senses.

Whether you seek out food adventures abroad, in another state or close to home, there are plenty of options. Its not just about trying new restaurants. I took a great cooking class in Vietnam, and they actually took us walking from the restaurant to the market. They pointed out whats in season and talked about what food they were going to make. It was also a great opportunity to strike up conversations with locals, as they know all the best places, from restaurants to bakeries. Be curious, Niver said. Talk to people.

Niver also recalled a cooking class she took in Tuscany. We made fresh pasta, we got to wear funny hats I liked that part and I tasted lots of different wines, Niver said. There were amazing desserts, we made different sauces and they gave us the recipes.

A cooking class is a great activity for traveling, but its also a way to travel without leaving home. For instance, a class Niver took at Sur la Table in Los Angeles was a delicious and social experience. We got to taste everything, she said. Usually you work in a group of four, six or eight, and sometimes different tables in the cooking class are making different parts of the meal. Niver said that she talked to everyone, found out where they were from and why they were there. I made lots of new, best friends, she said.

For those who want to be more brave with their food adventures, Niver suggests pairing up with a friend. One of the things I learned from scuba diving [is to] never go underwater without a buddy, she said. When Im at a restaurant, one of my most favorite things to do is share, because I want to try more than one thing. The other benefit to pairing up, is, if you are not sure about something on the menu, perhaps your friend will order it. My friends from college, Carl and Heather, will eat pretty much anything, she said. So sometimes, if Im a little bit interested in something, they order it, and I can taste it Most of the time in full honesty I dont even taste it, but I like to see them eat it; they get very happy.

While Niver enjoys cooking some of the Jewish dishes she grew up with, especially something like brisket for the holidays, one of her favorite things to make is chocolate chip banana muffins.

When traveling, I basically bring my elementary school lunch on the plane, she said. Niver packs a lot of food for road trips too.

Along with her muffins, Niver takes a little bag of carrots, hard-boiled eggs, those little red cheeses (Babybel) and crackers. I literally eat the whole plane ride, she said. Im having my smorgasbord as I cross different time zones.

Another tip for travel, Niver suggests, is to make an effort when interacting with the locals. When I was first starting to travel, I had spent a semester in Jerusalem, she said. Some of my friends were in other places around the world, and I went to visit. She continued, When I was in Paris, I walked into a shop [and] talked in English, and everyone ignored me.

In the next shop, Niver tried another approach. I spoke not very good Spanish with my terrible accent to a woman who promptly answered me in English, she said. And the lesson I took away from that is, if you make even a small, not great, effort, people appreciate that, so I always have tried to learn a few words.

Remember, you dont need to cross oceans to have new experiences. I think that people get caught up in what other people are doing, Niver said. You dont need to quit your job and travel around the United States in an RV or live abroad in hostels for six months. It doesnt have to be that dramatic, Niver said. If youre not traveling much, my suggestion is to start close to home. There are so many adventures in your own backyard.

Pasadena Magazine: Whatever Floats Your Boat

Thank you to Malina Saval and Pasadena Magazine for this 2-page print article about my cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas! Travel journalist Lisa Niver navigates the adventures aboard Royal Caribbeans Icon of the Seas.

Embarking on my journey in Miami, Florida aboard Royal Caribbeans the Icon of the Seas was not just an adventure, it was a homecoming. Having previously worked on staff at Royal Caribbean on the Rhapsody of the Seas, boarding Icon of the Seas felt like returning to a familiar embrace; albeit grander.

With eight distinct neighborhoods, there is something for everyone, from relaxing in any number of Chill Island’s seven pools and nine whirlpools, to strolling the shops at the two-story Royal Promenade, to exploring Thrill Island’s Category 6 water park with heart-pounding thrills including six water slides. Daredevils like myself can walk the plank at Crown’s Edge dangling 154-feet above the sea, scramble up the Adrenaline Peak rock-climbing wall, surf the flow rider or putt-putt on the Lost Dunes mini-golf course.

Evening entertainment includes singing along with dueling pianos or spotlight karaoke, performances of traditional Broadway shows in the Royal Theater, watching graceful figure skaters at Absolute Zero and spellbinding Olympic high divers in the Aqua Theater.

Central Park, a lush, peaceful oasis with over 30,000 plants, is in the heart of the ship. Some of the interior balcony rooms overlook the vibrant tapestry of greenery that spans five decks.

Central Park also has plenty of dining options, including the Bubbles bar, a walk-up champagne bar, and the Izumi sushi and hibachi restaurant.

Whether youre grandparents seeking adventure, parents looking to relax, or children eager to explore, the ship caters to everyone, with plenty of activities, and over 40 dining locations. Be sure to include on your list my favorite: the specialty milkshake bar, Desserted.

I was also impressed by the attention to detail and innovation with the ship’s design. At Swim & Tonic, a swim-up bar, you can enjoy your favorite cocktails without ever leaving the refreshing embrace of the pool. And if youre seeking the ultimate relaxation, the adults-only Hideaway area boasts the first suspended infinity pool at sea. It has breathtaking views and a sense of serenity unlike any other Ive experienced.

Every cruise aboard the Icon of the Seas includes a stop at the Royal Caribbean private island Coco Cay in the Bahamas. With its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, there is a host of excursions and activities, including Tailspin water slides at Thrill Waterpark, lounging in a hammock beneath swaying palm trees at Oasis Lagoon, snorkeling among colorful coral reefs, or enjoying the bar and music at the new adults-only area, Hideaway Beach.

Back onboard, the Surfside neighborhood caters directly to families with young children, with specialty restaurants including The Lemon Post, which provides cocktails for adults and mocktails for kids. Theres also a bright carousel and a child-friendly slide.

When it comes to accommodations, the ship has 28 options for all tastes and budgets. It offers everything from cozy cabins to luxurious suites. I loved the Ultimate Family Townhouse, a three-story suite that includes a multi-level indoor slide, a wrap-around balcony with a private whirlpool, a white picket fence, and enough space for eight people to sleep. As you ascend the staircase, each stair makes a different musical sound.

1706822451_IOTS-RR1800Photo Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

The most extraordinary aspect of the Icon of the Seas, however, is its sheer size. The largest cruise ship at sea, its larger than an aircraft carrier. Its also 24% more energy efficient than the required standards and the first Royal Caribbean ship powered by liquefied natural gas. In addition, the ship produces more than 93% of its fresh water onboard.

Yet, despite its size, Icon of the Seas many lounges are full of cozy corners to listen to music, dine, and relax. You can find your favorite spot to watch the waves and hang out with friends, old and new.

Reflecting on my time aboard the Icon of the Seas, I am grateful for the opportunity to revisit my roots in the cruise industry and witness how far it has come. More than a voyage, my experience was a celebration of innovation and excellence. I carry with me the memories of a lifetime spent at sea and the promise of future adventures.

How to Make Exploring Rome More Enjoyable

BY YVONNE PORTER

One of the wonderful things about exploring historic cities like Rome is that theyre often designed for walking. You cant beat hitting the streets on your feet if you want to get a real feel for the city.

You can also find all sorts of things as you walk around and, if you want to travel a little further, hop onto public transport. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your exploration in Rome.

Store Your Luggage

If you have a lot of luggage with you, perhaps because youve been shopping or youre just in Rome for the day before traveling somewhere else, it can weigh you down. Walking around all day can get tiring enough, let alone if youre carrying heavy bags with you as well.

One way to get around this is by using luggage storage Rome. This allows you to keep your belongings safe and accessible, while freeing you up to wander around. Its also useful if you wanted to hop onto a bus to visit somewhere specific, but didnt want everything with you.

Getting Around Rome

If youre happy to wander around on foot, make sure that you have comfortable shoes and clothes. Dress according to the weather. Rome tends to enjoy warm and mild weather, especially in the summer. Bring sunscreen to protect your skin. If you visit any churches, its best to dress respectfully.

Good shoes are especially important in the city center, which is well worth seeing. The tiles paving the streets are beautiful, but they can be hard to walk on with heels.

Otherwise, consider getting a taxi or hopping on public transport. You can buy digital passes, which is much easier and can be cheaper if youre traveling multiple times in a day. Just make sure you download the right app.

If you want to visit a few monuments and historical sites, look into Roma pass. Its a prepaid card that includes entry tickets and public transport tickets alike. As you can imagine, this can save you money and time, allowing you to skip lines.

Eating and Drinking

Italy is famous for its food and drink. Rather than rushing around, its best to enjoy a slower lifestyle. Savor your food and drink.

Look for independent places where you can, such as small coffee shops and espresso bars where you can eat a bite and appreciate amazing coffee. Italian food at its best is simple, using fantastic ingredients.

Learning the Language

Its more common in the cities to find people who speak English, especially in the more touristy areas. But it does help to learn at least a little Italian to get by and talk to people.

Learn how to greet people, thank people, and ask basic questions like directions and if they speak English. Even if youre not fluent, this can open doors to better experiences. If you do want to find independent shops and restaurants, be aware that the proprietors are less likely to speak English.

@leaveyourmarkpodcast New on the podcast: @LisaNiver on Being Brave-ish, Leaving Relationships that Don't Serve You, and Removing Can't From Your Vocabulary Lisa Niver has traveled in far-off locales from Vanuatu to Nepal, received numerous accolades as an award-winning travel expert who has explored 102 countries and six continents, and is the founder of the websiteWeSaidGoTravel, what people dont realize is that this began from the wreckage of a rotten romance. As a newlywed, Lisa was on the adventure of a lifetime. She had quit her job, rented her condo, and traveled around Asia. To the outside world, Lisa was a woman living out her dreams of exploring ancient ruins in Cambodia and seeing orangutans in Borneo. She kept a dark secret in private: an abusive relationship. But, when she found herself lying on a sidewalk in Thailand, looking up at the sky in severe pain, she knew things had to change. At age forty- seven, Niver found the courage to set course on a new life. Feeling like a failure, pushing fifty, and moving home to her parents' house to start again from scratch, Lisa began taking one tiny "brave-ish" step at a time to take her life far away from the old one and into the adventurous world of travel writing. These small hurdles led to the challenge of trying fifty new things before turning fifty. From diving into shipwrecks, swimming with sharks, bobsledding at 3Gs, indulging in wild escapades, Lisa found herself traversing the world on a journey of reinvention, personal growth, and discovering what it actually means to be "brave." Her new book Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, and Feeling Fearless After Fifty, chronicles Lisas inspiring expeditions to distant corners of the world, including Myanmar, Cuba, Morocco, Kenya, and Mongolia, but this is more than a travelogue. Brave-ish inspires readers to dream big, take risks, and embrace the unknown to create a life filled with wonder and excitement, even when courage seems elusive. In this episode, Lisa shares how she saved herself, took risks, embraced the unknown, and pressed the reset button when she fell off track. She also shares how she taught herself to rest, not quit. Lisa's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perseverance. #podcastinterview #badrelationships #solotravel #newbook #braveish #abuseawareness original sound – LEAVE YOUR MARK Podcast

Lisas book is the memoir detailing how she completed fifty crazy challenges and dares after turning fifty to reinvent herself after her divorce. Brave-ish is for people who might not feel that brave, and who are trying to figure out what to do next. Small steps lead to big changes, she encourages. She enjoys sharing all of her experiences and her travels in different mediums and online, and is thrilled to be the narrator in the audiobook version of Brave-ish. BRAVE-ISH: ONE BREAKUP, SIX CONTINENTS AND FEELING FEARLESS AFTER FIFTY

Although Lisa Niver has traveled in far-off locales from Vanuatu to Nepal and received numerous accolades for both her writing and her top ranked website, what people dont realize is that this began from the wreckage of a rotten romance.

Newlywed Niver was on the adventure of a lifetime. She had quit her job, rented out her condo, and was traveling around Asia. To the outside world, Niver was a woman living out her dreams of exploring ancient ruins in Cambodia and seeing orangutans in Borneo. In private, she was keeping a dark secret. But, when she found herself lying on a sidewalk in Thailand, looking up at the sky in severe pain, she knew things had to change. At age forty-seven, Niver found the courage to set course on a new life.

Feeling like a failure, pushing fifty, and moving home to her parents house to start again from scratch, Niver started taking one tiny brave-ish step at a time to take her life far away from the old one and into the adventurous world of travel writing. These small hurdles led to the challenge of trying fifty new things before turning fifty. From diving into shipwrecks, swimming with sharks, bobsledding at 3 Gs, to indulging in wild escapades, Niver found herself traversing the world on a journey of reinvention, personal growth, and discovering what it actually means to be brave.

While Brave-ish chronicles Nivers inspiring expeditions to distant corners of the world including Myanmar, Cuba, Morocco, Kenya and Mongolia this is more than a travelogue. Nivers story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perseverance. Brave-ish inspires readers to dream big, take risks, and embrace the unknown to create a life filled with wonder and excitement, even when courage seems elusive.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
