Sober (Chords/Lyrics)

This one’s one of my most recent ones, and it’s about drinking, not drinking, and my perpetual habit of only writing songs or playing guitar when I’m drinking beer. Listen to it in the player below or click here to listen and/or download via Spotify.

Em (high) Bm D Em

I’m staying sober and I’m still alive, and I don’t know what I used to do,

on all the long weekends on all the wrong nights, trying to find out what I mean to you.

And it goes like this, a thorn in her side and she’s tired of this,

because this shit’s insipid and mentally ill and because she stole the vowels from my kiss.

INTERLUDE

She’s an illusion, she’s falling through time, picking up broken glass at closing time,

she won’t be forgotten like yesterday’s news, she’s soaking in lemon and lime.

and I close my eyes, a feeling inside that I just can’t describe

and I’m tired of talking, I’m tiring of words and I’m trying not to write lines that rhyme.

CHORUS: Em (low) Bm D G F#/D x 4

SLOW

Now I’m feeling nervous and I’m feeling scared and I don’t know what I shouldn’t do.

Should I waste all my time while I write on wrong nights, should I break down and cry before you?

And I feel like shit, but I’m starting to feel so I’m dealing with it

and I don’t want to hide or believe in the hype, so I…

I…

give into it.

Catch Me Out and Defeat Me (Chords/Lyrics)

This song is another of my more recent ones, and it’s basically a stream of consciousness ramble with a lot of rhymes and half-rhymes. You can listen to it in the player below, or click here to check it out on Soundcloud.

E G A G

Can’t find my meaning today, but I never needed meaning even anyway,

I told you once, I told you twice, I’ve got no time to improvise.

So if you see me being greedy, you can catch me out and defeat me,

but it’s easy to believe in what you’re dreaming.

VERSE TWO

Can’t stand to see people in pain, but a lack of serotonin won’t affect my brain.

I’m strange and maybe dangerous to myself.

So if you meet me, see my weakness, you can catch me out and defeat me,

but it’s easy to believe in what you’re dreaming.

E A G A E

Yeah, she, she screams so loud in silence, you fight the silence with a secret of your own. Me, I’m feeling kind of divided, I haven’t decided why I try to feel at home.

Stand Right By Your Guns (Chords/Lyrics)

This song is a faster, more upbeat one, and one that I hope has a sort of moral to it. The gist of it is, “Live your life as hard as you can.” You can check out the chords and lyrics below, or click here to listen to the song on YouTubeEnjoy!

G D B C

I feel alive today, I know what I’ve been missing,

I’ve got too many feelings for me to let you take me out tonight, and I

kiss all the wrong women, those ‘write a song’ women,

killing all this time until I die.

But I’m alive, and kinda high and you don’t know until you try,

so I tried with all my heart to not remember,

but I remember being five and pouring tears out from my eyes

because I tried to hide from life with my Nintendo.

A C G

So stand right by your guns,

and be regrettable.

Yeah, stand right by your guns,

don’t be forgettable.

SOLO

I feel alive today, don’t want to throw my life away,

don’t want to give my job away, just want to give my love away

this day’s amazed and semi-crazed and maybe failing lazily

my final fantasies are fully formed.

And I, kiss all the wrong women, those ‘write a song’ women,

to try to make my lips just feel alive,

but I remember being ten and feeling pressure settle in

and ever since I’ve winced at things that I’ve survived.

OUTRO:

She said he sang like he had diamonds in his eyes. x4

Papercuts

This poem is another more recent one, and it’s a true story about when I got a papercut from my notebook. I hadn’t started writing – it cut me when I opened it up – and so a poem came out.

Even my notebook

wants to kill me.

It didn’t slit my throat

but it did cut my finger

and now I’m injured

and immune

to hepatitis.

Wait,

I’m not immune –

I’m susceptible.

I think I’d better get me

a double shot

of tetanus;

this baby’s wild,

she’s got teeth

and spit,

a little sawdust.

My computer

once shocked me

into submission;

I never forgave it

and so I bought me

a new one.

The new one

shocked me

too.

Still,

life is a shock

to the system,

and death is

a half-arsed

partial refund,

just ask the junkies I saw

in documentaries.

They live by the second

too,

and I’m glad

I never joined in.

I bleed enough as it

without a needle pinch.

If I Die Before You (Chords/Lyrics)

We’re getting closer and closer to being complete here. I’ve been on a mission to post the chords and lyrics to each of my recorded songs, and I’m now up to last year. That’s not a bad effort. This one’s a love song of sorts, and you can check it out on YouTube or watch it out in the player below. Enjoy!

CAPO ON SECOND

D|—0—-0—–0———-

A|-2———————–

E|——3—-0—–3——-

You lay so close to me I almost fell asleep.

It’s not the way these things were supposed to be.

But I’m not tired and I’m not scared.

But I’m not tired and I’m not scared.

Em G D A x2, Em G B

If I die before you, maybe babe you’ll believe me, and come and see me,

And if I die before you, you’ve gotta wait to see me, if we’re still breathing.

And if I die before you…

…you’ll see me again.

VERSE TWO:

Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise,

cherry ice cream smile, I suppose I plagiarise.

I’ve always tried to be everything I’m supposed to be,

I don’t dilute integrity with bleach.

CHORUS x2

A – 2-5-8-7

Opening a Window

I’ve been posting a lot of poems lately, but it’s been a while since I’ve posted a new one. Most of them have been at least a couple of weeks old, but this one is nice and fresh from a day or two ago. It’s about it being hot and stuff.

The women are wearing shirts

or long black dresses

with no strap on them,

leggings and tights,

short-sleeved t-shirts,

low-cut blouses,

foundation,concealer,

mascara and eyeliner,

plus bras and pants

and socks sometimes,

unless they’re barefoot.

I’m wearing pants,

socks, shoes,

blue jeans,

grey t-shirt,

one orange hoodie

and two bags beneath my eyes.

They said it’s sunny

and so it is,

but I’m somehow sensitive

to ultraviolet.

My idea

of the great outdoors

is opening

a window.

I do that sometimes

when I’m working from home

and then I close it again

because of dickheads

going up and down the hill

on quad bikes.

Those men wear leathers

or sometimes just

unemployed trackie bottoms

and job centre t-shirts.

My shirt came free

from some company.

But I’m not going to say

who sent it.

Sevens (Chords/Lyrics)

Today, I’m sharing the chords and lyrics to one of my more recent songs. This one’s called Sevens, and it gets its title from the fact that all of the chords are seventh chords. I also set it as the seventh track on Discordia, my third album. Enjoy!

D7   G7      D7     A7     D7   G7   D7  A7  D7

You were always the lonely one,

I was always the only one,

and you tried so hard to take my blues away.

You were always the lonely one,

I was singing your favourite songs,

and I promised everything would be okay.

A7  G7   D7

It’s cold outside tonight, I hope you wrapped up tight, ’cause baby I need you. (I need you.)

It’s raining vowel sounds and I just write them down, ’cause maybe I need to. (I need to.)

VERSE TWO:

You were always the lonely one,

I was always the only one,

and I tried so hard to get some sympathy.

Because you came round to my house

and then they pulled teeth from my mouth

because this life is just another mystery.

The Struggle (Poem)

The struggle is real. This is a poem about how difficult life can be, and how you just need to grab it by the horns and try not to let it kill you. It’s a couple of months old, but I like it. I think. Maybe.

Some people

struggle.

The human brain

won’t behave itself,

and people across the world

get laid up

in crazy situations,

from Asians to Latinos,

Africans to Europeans

and slightly racist,

warm-blooded,

hard-drinking,

fast-living

North Americans.

Life is hard

but you already

know that.

Mood altering medication

flies off the shelves

and into the hells

we create for ourselves,

and every single murder

is like a ruptured plate

in the human race;

every war

is a fault

in our foundations.

It’s like building up a fall

and falling down again,

the way great men fall

and waste their lives online

or heat up rocks

in a teaspoon,

it’s not for me

because it’s not for everyone.

Now I look around

for a face in the crowd,

but I still haven’t found

what I’m looking for.

My father said

I never will.

New Song: Up in the Country

Hi, folks! Today, I wanted to quickly share a new song that I’ve written and recorded. It’s called Up in the Country, and I wrote it while I was up in the country – on holiday in Shropshire!

I let around a week or so go by between when I wrote it and when I recorded it – purely because that was the earliest that I had a chance to look at it. But it was a lot of fun to record, and I put it all together in the space of an evening.

You can listen to the song in the player above, or you can click here to check it out on Soundcloud. You can also check out my new album, Discordia, for free on Spotify.

If that’s not enough and you’d like to further keep up with my exploits, be sure to sign up to my mailing list, to like my page on Facebook and to follow me on Twitter. I’ll see you soon!
