With A Little Help From My Friends…

Writing has been a terrifying and exciting experience. Fulfilling a lifelong dream is amazing, and scratching a line through that bucket list item is pretty damn cool.

But, as the title of this post suggests, I couldn’t do it without my friends. Hell, I couldn’t do the day-to-day without my friends or family. I think we all have at least one person we can lean on, who will be there for us and kick our butts in gear when we need it. There are people I know well, who do that for me, and there are those I’ve met since publishing who have become fast confidantes for me.

Here is what I know about the writing community:

Authors – These are some of the most amazing and supportive people you can meet. Yes, like any place, there might be a bad seed here and there, but for the most part, these people are encouraging and share your highs and lows. They make me feel normal, or as normal as I care to feel ;)  There are so many amazing books that come out daily. I can’t keep up, and my TBR list continues to grow. I can only speak for myself, but sometimes I feel out of my league, and am in constant awe of the people I’m “friends” with, because I’m a huge fan! Some of the most well-known authors are the most down-to-earth people out there.
Bloggers – OH MY DAMN! What can I say about the bloggers I have become friends with? I’ll throw some adjectives out there: CRAZY, FUNNY, AMAZING, EXCITING, GIVING, KIND, SELFLESS, FRIEND. And those are what come to mind off the top of my head. They pimp, promote and do anything and everything for the writers they love. I have so much love for these ladies, because they are simple: AWESOME.
Fans – That word makes me feel weird. I don’t have “fans” I have friends. I’m still a relative unknown, and I’m totally cool with that. When someone messages, reviews or emails me to tell me that they enjoyed my book, I can’t help but feel two things: Blessed and Embarrassed. Blessed, because I know they didn’t have to take the time to contact me, and I appreciate the encouragement so much. Embarrassed, because I’m me, and compliments catch me off guard. I love the readers that have reached out to me, because they are passionate about the things that they love.

It should go without saying, but I’m saying it anyway: Be Kind. Be thankful for what you have, and for those in your life who are there for you. You never know when things may change, and you don’t want to take that for granted. We all know there are two types of family, the one your born into, and the one you make. I have to admit, I’m grateful for them in all forms.

So here is a thank you:

-Thank you to the authors who have become my friends and share the same fears and joys I do. I’m thankful for the BadAsses in my life!

-Thank you to the bloggers who do so much, and ask for so little in return. Yes, you. I’m looking right at you, because you are amazing!

-Thank you to the fan/friends who make me smile and laugh, daily. (And blush a little, too)

-Thank you to my “IRL” friends who know me, in and out, and still love me. Thank you for accepting me as I am. I love you, too! (You know who you are.) I hope I’m as good to you as you are to me. ;)

-Thank you to my family, the Tenacious 10, who are my safe place; my normal. We have each other’s back and provide the best shoulders. I would be lost without you because it’s what we do, take care of each other. I love you with all my heart! :)

XO,

~T.K.

8-) With A Little Help From My Friends….The Beatles, of course! This is actually a ringtone on my phone for my friends. LoL!

Tuesday Teaser – Mine to Lose #2

Today’s Tuesday Teaser is a little late, but it’s all good. Right?

Mine to Lose - GNO

Mine to Lose – GNO

I’m normally very good at giving the cold shoulder, but the cocktails that I’ve had have me loose lipped. “Ryan, you left.”

“You told me to leave! Hell, you said if I didn’t go, you would. All we’ve done this week is fight.”

“So you run away?” I yell, but only so he can hear me over the music.

Ryan’s eyes shift over my shoulder and his look is murderous. When I turn to see why, there is a man standing behind me.

Walk away, I think to myself.

The guy looks down at me, never making eye contact with Ryan, “You okay?”

“She’s fine,” I turn to face Ryan as he responds for me. “My wife and I were just leaving.”

I smirk at Ryan and his use of the term “wife,” before turning to see my would-be hero. He’s attractive, in fact, he looks like Joss’ type. The guy narrows his eyes assessing me and I give him a tight smile and nod, that I am okay. He doesn’t look completely convinced, but I’m glad when he walks away. Part of me is grateful to see Ryan act out of sorts. But the other part of me is annoyed, because being the jealous guy isn’t his thing and now is the wrong time to start showing off his tough-guy act.

And there you have it, today’s teaser. Ryan and Emogen are driving me crazy, but I love them both so much. I wish I could tell you what happens next, but we know I won’t. :) More to come next week…..

XO,

~T

Get to Know..

Devon Youngblood

Devon Youngblood

You published your first book “Coming Back to You,” this summer. What has that experience been like for you? ~ Crazy! I never thought I would have a book published. I just figured those thoughts would stay in my head forever. But they had a story that needed told and I wrote it. It’s been one hell of a ride.
Is there any part of your books that you can personally relate to? Do any of the characters have traits that are “you”? ~ I throw a little of myself in each of my characters.  Maura was strong willed and stood her ground, Ruby was the best friend I never had! And Pierson, well he has a heart of gold and deep down is a good guy.
Your next book, “Bare Hearts” recently had a cover reveal, which is so intriguing, and I know that ARCs will be sent out soon. What can you tell us about this book, that we can’t find somewhere else? ~ Well it is a spin off from an “event” in Coming Back to You but can be read as a stand alone. It’s about two people finding each other/love in the mist of their own tragedies, in their darkest moments. And Lily is so scared to get hurt, she has a hard time letting Parker in completely because she’s had a rough childhood, she doesn’t trust easily. And Parker doesn’t go without a fight. He fights for them to be together. And there is a little twist in there that’s not mentioned in the blurb.
Did you always want to be a writer? ~ Yes, I’ve always been a thinker and my imagination is always going somewhere, why not put it to paper.
Did you try to go the traditional route, when it came to publishing, or did you already know you wanted to self-publish? Why? ~ No, I wanted control over my own writing, especially just starting out I wanted to go the INDIE route.
What do you consider the hardest part of writing? What is your favorite part? ~ Hardest, and I think a lot will relate to is, editing! It’s such a tedious process. And the best part is putting it out there for others to read, and it’s even more awesome if they can relate to the characters and enjoy it.
You have some great reviews for “Coming Back to You,” (congratulations!) do you read your reviews, or do they make you too nervous? ~ Thanks. Yes I do read reviews but they also make me nervous.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about writing a book? ~ That some might think it’s easy, because it is by far NOT the easiest thing to do.
When your readers contact you about your books, what do they say? ~I don’t get a lot of feedback from readers, they haven’t contacted me personally. But I do read their reviews and I appreciate it.
Do you have other books that you are currently working on? Can you tell us anything about them? ~ Oh YES I am working on my third book that will be a NEW series of two to three books. I haven’t seen any others writing about “said” storyline either. But the first book will be a tearjerker, so be prepared to have tissues on hand when it does release. They are my favorite characters to write so far, and I’m so happy with the cover as well!
Who would you consider your inspiration personally? Professionally? ~ Gosh, that is kinda hard. I have so many author friends I look up to and I love talking with them on a daily basis.
Has your husband read your books? If so, what does he say about them? ~ He hasn’t, says he wants to to, but he hasn’t made the time. He is very involved in my writing though, as far as ideas he is my go to guy for certain subjects. He is my biggest supporter and always asks me about my stories.
What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment? ~ Publishing my first book. I’ve learned so much along the way and I only hope that I continue to grow.
If someone asked for your advice about writing a book, what would it be? ~ Take your time, do your research, and don’t be hard on yourself . Writing is a journey and a learning process.
Who do you consider to be your favorite authors? ~ S. L Jennings LOVE her Dark Light series.
Are you reading anything right now? ~ Right now I’m reading Saving Cassie by L.A Remenicky, it’s a very unique storyline and I’m enjoying it.
If you could say anything to your readers, what would it be? ~ That I appreciate their support and I hope they continue reading my work.

Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps…

Perhaps, my WIP for NaNoWriMo will be everything I am hoping it will be:

I’ve had a story playing in my head for months, but it’s been pushed to the back while I work on Mine to Lose. MTL has been my focus, and I fall more in love with this story all the time, but this other story is calling to me, and NaNoWriMo seemed like the perfect opportunity to see what I can do with it. Whether or not it’s finished by the end of the month isn’t the important part to me…nope, that would be in the telling of the story. (It’s not a love story. It’s sad and hopeful…I’ll share more when there is more to tell)

Perhaps, Mine to Lose will be finished by the end of November:

This book is all up in my head…non-stop, in my dream and daydreams! If only there were a way to get those thoughts out of my head while I’m driving, or cleaning. This movie plays in my head as I write, and I love it. So. Much. The funny thing, I see certain things happening, and then when I am writing the scene, it changes, and my jaw drops. Things are happening that I never intended, but I still love it. If you saw the teaser from yesterday, then you see some of it. So, I have some work to do, and I am hoping it will be ready to edits by the end of the month. (This becomes more of a reality everyday.)

Perhaps, I will get some reading done:

O.M.G. – where do I start???? I have, in my possession, several WIPs/ARCs that I am DYING to read. DYING!! My list is long and beautiful, and I have been able to read some, and I can’t wait for these authors to put their work out there, because they are amazing!

If you were one of the winners from the Blog Tour last week, keep an eye out for your goodies. I mailed them out today, so you should be getting something very soon!! I had so much fun with that tour and hope you did, too.

I can’t believe I almost forgot!!!! Yesterday, my Facebook page reached 2000 Likes! I’m shocked and thankful to everyone who sticks around!! ;) And, if you have followed my page, then you know that when it hits 2000 Likes, I will be posting scene from Drew’s POV. Here’s your chance to select the scene! (Be sure to share and post! The winning scene will be chosen Friday!!!!!)

AND, just in case you missed my Mine to Lose dream cast yesterday…

Tuesday Teaser – Mine to Lose #1

Teaser Tuesday!

Mine to Lose Dream Cast

Mine to Lose Dream Cast

I’m so angry, that my typically modest attire won’t suffice. I hurry to my closet and search for the skimpiest dress in my possession. When I find it, it’s pushed so far in the back that, if I blow on it, dust might actually fly off. I change out of comfy cloths and slip into the sexy purple off the shoulder dress that I haven’t worn since college. It was one of Ryan’s favorites, maybe someone else will like it, too.

I’m looking for trouble.

I look down at my hand and eye the ring, a promise that Ryan made to me. The hurt I feel is greater than my desire to wear something that I’m not sure represents the original promise. The ring has taken up residence on my finger for over a year, so when I take it off, the while line shows the remnants of what once was. There’s a light knock at the door that startles me out of my ring-induced trance, so I finish touching up my makeup before answering.

I was expecting Joss, so seeing Ryan standing in the threshold surprises me. The look on his face goes from neutral to shock-filled in less than a second, and I beam inside, knowing that he might be pissed.

“What are you doing here?” I ask, annoyed.

“I thought we could talk,” confusion laces his tone.

“I think you said everything you needed to say in your note,” I bite out. “Besides, you told me to call when I’m ready, and well- I’m not ready. In fact, I have plans.” Before I can elaborate, Joss walks in and sees the two of us in a standoff and tries to back away.

“Hey, Joss,” I call to her, from around Ryan in a chipper tone, “I’ll be ready in five.” She nods her head, but looks as though she might not be around in five minutes because she plans to bolt.

Mystery of Love…

This Monday, my Blog Tour hosted by Back Off My Books, ended. I am so grateful to Jenn for everything she did to put this together; she was fantastic. If you didn’t stop by last Thursday to the Live event, host by RMWTPC‘s Lisa, you missed out. Let’s just say there was Truth or Dare, pics of Texas, and definitely some TK torture…but there were also giveaways! It was so much fun and I got to chat with some great people. If you were one of them, THANK YOU for stopping by. :)

Since the tour ended, I have been BETA-reading a few books (awesome books that I can’t wait to come out) and have been staring a the flashing cursor on my screen.

Yup…just staring. I have drafted, outlined, rewritten, scratched out, made notes and still nothing. I have been stuck and it’s been killing me. How am I ever going to publish the book, if I can’t even finish it. As I told my CPs, I am having brain to computer issues. I see it playing out, but I can’t write it out. Make sense?

Mine to Lose ~ Notes

Mine to Lose ~ Notes

That problem was solved yesterday when I cleared my desk, put a song on repeat, got out my notecards and went for it. Not sure what was different between this time and ALL the other times I have tried to work it out, but this time, it clicked. I wrote note after note for two hours and when I was done, I had the entire thing complete! Working through the issues that were blocking me lifted a huge weight off my shoulders, and motivated me to get moving. I was attached to my desk chair for hours, only stopping to eat and say goodnight to the kiddos. By the time I called it a night and shut down last, I had over 2k new words written, another chapter complete and a huge smile on my face.

So, that being said, my focus is on finishing Mine to Lose and I hope that when it’s done, you will love it. I couldn’t stop smiling last night, because I fell in love with Ryan, Emogen’s boyfriend, all over again. I’m so happy, in fact, that I’ve posted a small teaser below:

Mine to Lose ~ Teaser 1

Mine to Lose ~ Teaser 1

Thank you for reading today’s post. Hopefully the teaser did just that….and maybe you’ll check back next week to see what other little snippets I’ll share. I promise, there WILL be another teaser. Who knows, maybe you’ll hear from Trey….he’s kinda great, too.

Don’t forget, during the month of October, 10% of sales from Being There will be donated to The Rose in Houston, Texas, in support of Breast Cancer awareness month!! Click HERE to buy your copy and help a great cause!

One final note: be sure to check back tomorrow or Friday, because one of my FAVORITE authors will be my featured spotlight. Want to know who it is? Check back ;)

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT – Ashley Suzanne

It’s Thursday, you know what that means….another Author Spotlight!

This week, Ashley Suzanne has stopped by. Ashley is the author of Mirage and Inception, and took some time out of her day to answer some questions. :)

Synopsis of Mirage:

Mirage

Mirage

Mira and Kylee meet Danny and Skylar during freshman orientation, their first week of college. Two sets of best friends embark on a new adventure together, forming life long bonds.

Mira and Danny are looking forward to their future as husband and wife. Everything was going according to plan. That was until tragedy struck them on graduation night leaving three broken people to pick up the pieces.

Skylar has always stood in the background, watching his best friend begin a life with the woman he fell in love with until he can no longer keep a distance.

Right when Mira thinks her life is back on track it spirals out of control. What if everything you thought you knew was nothing more than a mirage?

Get to know…

Ashley Suzanne

Ashley Suzanne

You published your first book, Mirage, this summer. What has that experience been like for you?  Am I allowed to say it’s been weird?  Okay, I’m saying it.  It’s been weird.  But an awesome time!  Writing Mirage was a lot of fun, publishing was terrifying and seeing people fall in love with my characters takes my breath away!
Is there any part of your books that you can personally relate to? Do any of the characters have traits that are youEven though this book is fiction, it’s really close to my heart.  A lot of the book are personal experiences of mine and the people I love.  Of course they’re altered, to fit the fiction realm, but they hit really close to home.  I’ve been to the clubhouse I described, my husband is a biker, Kylee is ALL my personality and Skylar, well, CRAP, I wanna marry him and have his babies!
What do your fans love most about your work?  The biggest compliment I’ve received is that Mirage was a refreshing change to the typical romance novel.  I know a lot of people hate cliffhangers and want a HEA for the characters, and I’m one of them.  But I wanted to do a different kind of cliffy and the ones who read it like it!!  Doing a well plotted CH is a biggie for me and I think I nailed it!
What can you tell us about Inception (The Destined Series)?  Inception is Danny’s story.  Inception will give NO resolution to the CH in Mirage, but give you a back story.  Many readers who email/message/FB me are telling me that it made a lot of the pieces come together that they were missing in Mirage.  And the love the bond between Danny and Skylar!!
Now that you have published a couple of books, what are your thoughts on the writing community?  I love my colleagues.  I love the bloggers.  I love the readers.  I couldn’t think of a better job!  Hopefully one day it will be my career!
Have you always want to be a writer?  When I was in high school, I took a lot of English courses.  Creative Writing, Expository Writing ect.  I also loved Drama and the creative process of writing a play.  I wanted to create since forever ago.  I never thought I would be a writer though.  I would have seen myself more on a stage.  Then one day, I realized that I would rather see my name in print than in lights and the rest is history!
If you weren’t an author, what do you think you’d be doing?  The same thing I do now LOL.  I’m a full time employee, a mom and a wife.  I’m also a blogger.  If I wasn’t spending my nights writing, I would be reading!
What do you consider the hardest part of writing? What is your favorite part?  The hardest part for me was tenses.  I hate tenses, HATE.  I always get them confused.  I know it sounds stupid, but when I’m writing, I just tell the story as it appears in my head.  I’m sure my editor wants to stab me in the eyeballs by now.  The best part is plot changes.  When your story is going one way and then all of a sudden a light bulb goes off and BAM you have a totally different story!
Who would you consider your inspiration personally? Professionally?  Personally, it’s my family.  My family has stood by me and given me support in anything I ever wanted to do in life.  They never think my dreams are stupid and even if I fail, they’re there to pick me up again.  They’re kind of amazing!  Professionally, it’s the other writers in the Indie community.  I can’t single anyone out because they are all so amazing.  There are a few who are my own personal “Yoda’s” and help me through everything.  I really admire them, their work ethic and their craft.  I hope to be as amazing as them one day.
What does your family think about your writing? Have they read your books?  My husband supports me to the fullest.  He does anything he can to make sure I have my time to write.  My kids hate it.  They miss mommy.  I can’t blame them.  My mom is currently reading Mirage and my aunt just finished.  It’s kind of weird they are reading the “sex” I write, but oh well!!!  I think it’s kind of funny now!
What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment? Hmmmmm.  This is a hard one.  I’m going to say that getting my GED this year is my biggest accomplishment and my proudest moment.  I dropped out of high school when I was 17 and had my oldest son.  I never had the chance to finish.  Even though I went to college and had a career, I wanted to prove something to myself and be a roll model for my kids.  I didn’t want them to ever think they can take the easy way out and it will all be fine.  I’m the exception to that rule.  So I took my GED at 28!
If someone asked for your advice about writing a book, what would it be?  If you can dream it, you can do it!  If you want it bad enough, Make It Happen.
Who are your top 3 favorite authors?  OH GOD!  You’re trying to kill me.  Okay, let’s see.  Traditional Published Authors:  Janet Evanovich, Maya Banks and Megan Hart.  I will read anything they write.  Indie Authors:  I just can’t do it.  I’ll give you a top 10, in no particular order.  Pamela Ann, Madeline Sheehan, SE Hall, Hilary Storm, Mia Michele, Kendall Grey, Gail McHugh, Jasinda Wilder, Harper Sloan and Pepper Winters.
Are you reading anything right now? What? I’m currently reading Falling Into You by Jasinda Wilder and crying my freakin eyes out.
What are you working on right now?  Awakening .. SQUEEEEEEEE
If you could say anything to your readers, what would you say?  There’s not enough room.  THANK YOU!!!  I wouldn’t be able to do what I love without you and your support.  Indie readers are some of the most loyal dedicated fans I have ever run across in any industry.  You stick by your authors and have no problem messaging them to tell them you wanna cut them, hug them, smack them or hump their legs.  You are all WONDERFUL!

Another is Waiting…

Since my last post, I’ve had a busy, and exciting week.

This weekend, I got to go to the Austin Author Signing, where I got to fangirl over the likes of Colleen Hoover (who had Griffin Petersen with her a.k.a. Holder), Molly McAdams, Tamara Webber and more!

As excited as I was to see these amazing writers, I was just as excited to FINALLY meet my fellow indie authors, R. Jean Wilson & Britney King!!! Oddly enough, as chilly as it was outside, hanging with R. Jean and Lance (her sweet bf, who waited along with us), the time passed rather quickly. As many times as we have texted and chatted, meeting was a million times better and I felt like I’ve known her forever. It was funny to find out that there were other indies there that I didn’t know about until after the fact, so we’ll have to make sure we fix that next time…like say at the Houston Book Rave???

It really was an amazing weekend, and I’m so happy my hubby and daughters drove me up so I could fangirl! And really glad his sis happened to be there too so she could keep them busy. Lol.

So that was last week….

THIS WEEK….

Today begins the Being There blog tour, hosted by Jenn from Back off My Books. This woman is amazing and has lined up some great bloggers who are participating. Please check it out, because there is a new blog everyday. There are giveaways, goodies and fun on the way, so I hope to see you there!

And remember that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and 10% of every copy of Being There sold, during October, will be donated to The Rose, in Houston. This organization provides quality breast healthcare to all women. To learn more, go check their website http://www.therose.org and see how amazing they are. To get your copy of Being There, 1-click on Amazon and support a great cause.

I suppose this is all for this week’s blog post. Thanks for reading and sharing and just being really great! I appreciate the messages that I get on Facebook, all of you are just….AWESOME!
