Thank you, Gary, for the opportunity to address some questions about my book, Dare I Call It Murder?: A Memoir of Violent Loss.

Gettysburg Address: A Model for Good Writing
Writers, take heed: The Gettysburg Address . . . “provides a model and a mirror for writing and speechmaking today.”
Gettysburg Address, Hay copy (Wikipedia)
So says Ronald C. White, a biographer of President Abraham Lincoln, in an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times, marking the 150th anniversary of the speech.
White notes that the address, delivered on Nov. 19, 1863, following the deadly U.S. Civil War battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is revered not only for its brevity but its clarity.

36 Years Ago Today: Our Final Good-bye
Loren and Jody Edwards at their bon voyage party.
Thirty-six years ago today I said good-bye to my parents. The next day, they set sail for the South Pacific aboard their 53-foot ketch, the Spellbound. I figured I’d see them again in a year or two.
Three months later, on Feb. 24, 1978, I got a phone call: My father lay dead aboard the boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after being hit by the boat’s boom, and my 20-year-old kid sister, Kerry, was unconscious and bleeding from head wounds. T...

‘The Underside of Joy’: not chick lit, but real lit
The Underside of Joy by Seré Prince Halverson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This delightful story is not chick-lit; it’s real lit, as in literary; one of the most well-written books I’ve read in recent years. If this very human story doesn’t leave your eyes as misty as the redwood forests of Northern California where it’s set, then you have no heart. And this is coming from a cynical guy. And this is coming from a cynical guy.
Rather than pander to the “housewives” mentality of mass-market pulp, The U...
‘Water Shock’: compelling work of fiction that holds many truths
Water Shock by Milton N Burgess
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Water Shock may be fiction, but it holds many truths. This compelling work by Milt Burgess is a clarion call to action not only for every person living in the southwestern United States but the on Planet Earth.
In his important work, Burgess leaps forward to the year 2069 when an earthquake liquifies the levees in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, effectively leaving Southern California without water as the region struggles to dig out from...

‘Pop Goes the Bubble’ One of Top SDM Stories of 2000s
Wow, I just learned via a friend that I received another honor of sorts — San Diego Magazine, in its October 2013 edition, named a story of mine from 2005 — “Pop Goes the Bubble” — as one of its Top 5 stories from the 2000s decade.
The magazine says: “Then-business editor Larry M. Edwards saw it coming in 2005, when he called the housing bubble a ticking time bomb in disguise.”
Ironically, I won five awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club for 2005, but this...
