Clark Gregg Talks Agents of SHIELD Season 2

Updates on 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 2, 'Agent Carter ...

Clark Gregg, the newly minted geek icon who plays Agent Phil Coulson on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., just gave a very candid interview with Collider about how season 2 is going to be different from season 1.  So what does he have to say about what Shieldies (I’m making that a thing) can expect from season deux?  Check it out:

“It’s gonna be lo-fi. You’re going back to basics. You’ve got to rebuild SHIELD from the ground up in a much more dangerous world, where your group is outlawed. So it feels like the early Sean Connery James Bond with brass knuckles and not afraid to knock somebody off.”

Some of you may have heard that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will now air at 9 pm, as opposed to 8pm, on Tuesday nights.  Gregg says that the later time slot means the show “can be a little darker.” That fits with the “early Sean Connery James Bond” vibe, as well. Agents of SHIELD often felt a little too “family friendly,” so the idea that they can start making the show a bit more adult, much like Captain America 2, is a good thing in my humble opinion.

I think the biggest thing that turned many viewers off during the early part of the first season was the uneven pacing.  The series started off extremely slow, but by the second half, it took off running and didn’t slow down.  However, by then, lots of eager fans had jumped ship.  Mr. Gregg appears to understand how frustrating it was:

“I thought there were so many things that were stacked against us last year. One of them was, trying to get a new show off the ground, where the regular ABC television schedule would put us on for three episodes and then take us off down four weeks and nobody could get a momentum going. When the show started to be on consistently and had a story carried over in an episodic way, that’s when it started to click.”

Amen to that.  I’m glad I stuck with the show, because the pay-off on the back end of the season was fantastic, and the show is really starting to hit its stride.  Next year, SHIELD will be assisted by the Agent Carter TV series, so all those ridiculous programming gaps ABC plagued us with this season will have something to fill it.  Gregg describes the balance of Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter episodes as a 10/8/12 split. So, expect 10 episodes of Agents of SHIELD, 8 episodes of Agent Carter, and then the final 12 episodes of Agents of SHIELD season 2. Those problems with weeks (or even months) between new Marvel programming on ABC appear to have been solved… for now, anyway. *ominous music*Season 2 will undoubtedly be based around the events leading up to and encompassing Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.  I get the feeling we’ll see more of the SHIELD team dealing with Hydra in the first half of the season, and whatever fallout Ultron brings to the table once that film hits.  Let’s just hope that the writers/producers learned their lesson and give us an interesting first half of season 2.So what are your predictions for season 2?  Let me know in the comments!

Jupiter Ascending Descends To A 2015 Release Date

News Reel: Wednesday May 21

So you know that big-budget sci-fi epic from the creators of The Matrix Trilogy that was set to open in July?  Yeah, according to Variety, that ain’t happening.

Citing the need to finish extensive special effects, Warner Bros. has delayed the Andy and Lana Wachowski movie “Jupiter Ascending” from July 18 to Feb. 6, 2015.

The decision came less than seven weeks before the sci-fier was due to open. Domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman said that the Wachowskis needed more time to complete their work on more than 2,000 special effects shots in the film.

“With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time,” he added. “A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time.”

Fellman also said noted that “Jupiter Ascending” would now open on the same weekend that Warner Bros. used for “The Lego Movie” this year. The exec said that the sci-fier had been shown in rough form at test screenings.

Fellman also noted that both “Lego” and Disney/Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which opened in early April, had delivered strong results outside the traditional tentpole corridors. “Lego” grossed $460 million worldwide and “Winter Soldier” has topped $700 million.

The movie is definitely effects heavy, so I guess its a good thing they’re not rushing it and taking the time to do it right.  It is kinda odd that Warner Bros has decided to knock Jupiter Ascending from a prime summer slot to that of the far less prestigious April.  However, my thinking is that the lack of competition from big movies in that time-frame will give Jupiter Ascending the breathing room it needs to find an audience.  Heck, it worked for Captain America, right?  So now the only movies the film has to compete with are they Johnny Depp-starring Mortdecai and the Jeff Bridges-starring (and also delayed) Seventh Son – both of which look… well… crappy.  (IMHO)

Though, after seeing Channing Tatum’s ridiculous make-up for the film, I can’t help but wonder if 1,999 of those 2,000 effects shots left to be completed are devoted to making him look less ridiculous.  I seriously want this movie to be good, because I support all sci-fi, but I am not, nor will I ever be, a Channing Tatum fan.  And the design of his character in this movie is just laughable. Seriously, take a look at this image and tell me with a straight face you do not think of a Keebler Elf.  I dare you.  I double-dog dare you.

Canning Tatum looks ridiculous in Jupiter Ascending

Oh, and Sean Bean is in the movie as Tatum’s mentor!  How much you want to bet he dies at some point in the movie?  The Sean Bean Death Squad is a thing, people.  It must be kept alive.  (pun intended.)  Anyway, for those of you who know nothing about this movie (and let’s face it, there hasn’t exactly been a marketing blitz for this thing, considering its previous release date was last month), here is a synopsis for y’all:

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, Jupiter Ascending was conceived and written by the Wachowskis, who are also directing. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom the writer/directors have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing the film together with the Wachowskis. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

And for those of you who hate to read, you can get the gist of it from the trailer:

So what do you think?  Is this movie going to be any good?  Will it do better in April of 2015 than it would have in July of next month?  I report, you decide… then we both go on with our lives not caring.

This 8 Bit Falling Skies Season 4 Trailer Is Awesome

Falling Skies is one of my favorite sci-fi shows that is currently being aired.  It’s got pretty much everything a sci-fi lover could want, and it just seems to be getting better and better with each season.  Plus, its got Colin Cunningham in it, and he’s a fantastic guy I’ve had the pleasure of meeting personally.

But the mark of a TRULY cool show is when it goes 8 bit, and is just as awesome as when its in full HD.  For those of you who’re fans of the show, you’ll no doubt pick up on some of the little gags in the video.  It’s essentially a trailer for Falling Skies season 4, set to premiere Sunday, June 22 at 10/9c on TNT.  When we last left the 2nd Mass, they’d struck a decisive blow against the evil Espheni by destroying the control tower in Boston, allowing the Volm re-enforcements to land.  However, the Volm may just be more dangerous than the Espheni are.  And Tom’s kidnapped daughter (it seems like his kids are always  getting kidnapped, doesn’t it?) turns out to have aged from a newborn to a six year old in two month’s time, and she seems to have control over Espheni technology, which means she may, or may not, be evil.

I really can’t wait to see where season 4 takes the show as its mythology continues to expand and we begin to see a little more of the bigger picture with the alien races.  Oh, and this 8-bit video trailer was officially produced by the show.  How cool is that?

Watch this show and help support it over the summer.  Show TNT that sci-fi fans appreciate networks that give them good sci-fi.

Starship Troopers Is Being Rebooted?

Starship Troopers remake moves forward. Would you like to know ...

You know, the original Starship Troopers is a guilty pleasure of mine.  I will concede that it by no means is a good movie, but I always find it fun to watch.  Paul Verhooven is a director that just makes glorious crap most of the time, and I have to admit, I am a fan.  I actually thought the movie version was better than the book, which I didn’t much care for.  And the straight to video sequels were pretty poor.  However, there was a CGI animated cartoon and movie based on Starship Troopers which were both actually really good.  In the right hands, this franchise could be something stellar.

And it looks like it might be getting a second chance at life.

Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures is the company that snapped up the rights to the Terminator franchise a year or two back, and remains involved as director Alan Taylor calls the shots on Terminator: Genesis (if that’s still the film’s name). Annapurna also has several other big movies to its name, including Foxcatcher and the Seth Rogen co-penned animated movie Sausage Party. Most recently, it released the likes of American Hustle and Her.

A teasing Tweet from Megan Ellison however suggests that the firm may well now be in the Starship Troopers business. “Would you like to know more?”, she Tweeted, a phrase which Starship Troopers fans know only too well. And when sent a picture of the film in reply, she responded with a simple “Yes”.

Now: there may be a mountain made out of a proverbial molehill here, but when the person backing a major sci-fi reboot suddenly starts Tweeting about another one in such a way? It’s hard not to read something into it (especially when it’s little secret that a Starship Troopers reboot was in the works a year or two back, only apparently hitting the skids when the new Total Recall underperformed).

I would personally love to see Starship Troopers get a reboot.  Make it a gritty war movie in space, and have a freakin’ ensemble star in it.  Fill it with tragedy and loss and the horrors of war.  Verhooven’s version had great satire layered in (as usual) but the acting was supremely bad, and the script was so-so.  I think if they could get a good director and writer attached, this property could really take off.  Oh, and whatever they decide to do with it, I hope it includes NPH.  That guy makes everything he’s in better.  :)

What do you think?  Another crappy reboot?  Or “Would you like to know more?”

The Most Hilarious Watch Dogs Review You’ll Ever See

Wow.  This was really funny.  In fact, I’d say this is the funniest Watch Dogs review ever made.  I think I laughed hardest at the part where Conan gets on the boat.  I love that he’s doing these video game reviews.  It really is entertaining to watch people worse than me at video games play these things.  :)

Anyone out there playing Watch Dogs?  What’s the verdict on it so far?

Robert Pattinson To Star In ‘Indiana Jones’ Reboot?

Robert Pattinson to star as Indiana Jones?

Oh.  My.  Dude.

Just… just stab me in the eyes please.  I don’t want vision if it means having to see this:

Is nothing sacred? Last we heard about Indiana Jones was that the character rights didn’t actually come over when Disney bought out Lucasfilm and Star Wars. But several months later it was indeed revealed that Disney did a smaller separate deal to acquire rights to the Indiana Jones franchise. We had also heard mumbles that Harrison Ford had demanded another Indiana Jones movie be in his contract when he signed up to play Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII but this rumor has never been confirmed or denied.

Now the guys over at The Sun (via MTV Uk) claim that have an inside scoop on the status of the Indiana Jones franchise. It seems that Disney is looking to reboot the franchise from scratch with a young actor to take over the role of Indy. They even have a shortlist of actors they want in the lead which includes the obvious names like Channing Tatum, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Kellen Lutz and non other than Twilight heartthrob himself Robert Pattinson at the top of their list! They are also looking to do back-to-back films which means they need an actor that can do a “three-year commitment” at the very least.

Let’s go over that short list Disney has again, shall we?

Channing Tatum
Kellen Lutz
Robert Pattinson
Chris Hemsworth
Chris Pine

Out of all those, Chris Pine seems like the best choice.  He just has the most “Indiana Jones” feel to him.  But Kellen Lutz?  Channing Tatum?  ROBERT FREAKIN’ PATTINSON?  *headdesk**headdesk**headdesk*

What is wrong with you Hollywood?  It seems like everything coming out of you in the future is going to be a “reboot” or a “reimagining” of some sort.  Frankly, I don’t mind rebooting Indiana Jones because Harrison Ford is just too old to keep playing him, so it makes sense.  As long as you don’t ever come close to another Indy installment like The Crystal Skull, I’ll be happy.  But really, why don’t you just hire Brett Ratner to direct this movie, with Michael Bay attached to produce, and Tara Reid as the love interest?  Or better yet, REALLY go for the awful and hire freakin’ Uwe Boll to shepherd a whole new Indiana Jones trilogy!  That makes JUST AS MUCH SENSE.

It’s a good thing this is all at the “rumor” stage, because otherwise… I’d have to murder some fools.

But that begs the question… if not Harrison Ford, then who should be cast as the NEW Indiana Jones?  (And if any of you say Robert Pattinson, I will sacrifice a small, furry animal to the God of butt rabies, I kid you not.)

New MORTAL KOMBAT X Trailer Is Bloody Awesome (Literally)

I can remember seeing the first Mortal Kombat game at a go-cart speedway arcade when I was a kid growing up in Ohio.  I still remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever.  Realistic video game characters killing each other violently and unashamed of showing copious amounts of blood and gore in the process.  Me and my brothers would spend hours playing the NES version trying to master the Fatalities.  There is just something about murdering fools in the most heinous way possible that appeals to children, am I right?

So I was really excited to see the RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME trailer for Mortal Kombat X (I assume that’s a Roman numeral 10 and not an actual X, like Malcolm X).  The ending was just… oh so sweet.  Here’s the skinny on the upcoming return to form for the Kombat franchise:

Mortal Kombat X is officially on the way, after weeks of teasing by creator Ed Boon on twitter. NetherRealm, who saw success with their recent Mortal Kombat reboot as well as last year’s DC Comics themed fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us returns to the brutal fighter that made their team famous in 2015.

The announcement trailer features a battle between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, arguably the two most recognizable fighting game characters this side of Ryu, with signature elements like the close-up bone breaking, the moves everyone who has played a fighting game in the last 20 years know, and some new variations on the theme. Stay tuned all the way to the end for a new fatality by Scorpion – which is not for kids or the faint-of-heart.

While there are no platforms listed in the trailer (typically those would come at the end underneath the game’s logo), retailer listings have noted both current-gen and last-gen consoles, with pre-order listings for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. That has since been confirmed, alongside PC as well. Check out the trailer, which is decidedly M-rated, below.

And here’s the official description of the game, from a press release:

Mortal Kombat X combines cinematic presentation with all new gameplay to deliver the most brutal Kombat experience ever, offering a new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy. For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together.

All I have to say is that if this game trailer is representative of what I can expect in the actual game… I’m gonna be all up on this muggahugger.  For realz, yo.  And if I can finish off a fool by pinning his severed head to a tree with a thrown knife, I may just give up on life entirely and do nothing but play this game all day long.

What do you guys say?  Are you looking forward to a new Mortal Kombat game?  What is the most creative Fatality you can think of to kill someone with?

Divergent Sequel Has Begun Filming!

Divergent' Movie Stills

If you’re a long time reader of this blog (and why wouldn’t you be?) then you know that I had some pretty strong opinions about the movie Divergent.  Not to say I thought it was a bad movie, just that it was pretty mediocre and filled with a ton of logic flaws which I found very distracting when watching the movie.  Well, news has just hit that work on the Divergent sequel, titled “Insurgent,” has begun.  Here’s the plot synopsis for the film:

INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

Uuuuuuummmmmmmmmm….

Okay, people.  You say the same movie I did, right?  Didn’t all the Erudite’s get put in their place once the Dauntless snapped out of their mind control?  I mean, between Abnegation and Dauntless, you’d think Erudite would be screwed.  Not to mention most of the muckety-mucks behind that uprising/coup/whatever were killed at the end of Divergent, or at least arrested.  I wondered at the time why Tris had to go on the run at the end because she’d basically just saved the day and all the guys whose job it is to carry weapons were pissed as hell that they’d basically been mind controlled.

SO WHY IS SHE NOW BEING HUNTED AND HAVE TO RACE AGAINST TIME TO UNCOVER A LOST SECRET??????

Because… there wouldn’t be a sequel otherwise, I guess?

(Makes sense, logic.  Thank you.)

Anyway, here’s the details on the production that’s just kicked into high gear:

Fans of the recent hit and mostly well reviewed ‘Divergent‘ already know that there was a sequel that was greenlit. That isn’t the only good news, though, as they should be happy to hear that this sequel has already started filming in Atlanta!

‘Insurgent’ will pick up right after the events of the first film with Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) on the run from the power-hungry Erudite leader Jeanin (Kate Winslet) as they begin to uncover the secrets of their world.

New to the movie franchise will be Octavia Spencer who was added to the cast to play Amity leader Johanna. As the film continues during production, I’m sure more casting news will be released as well as a slew of promotional pictures.

Robert Schwentke (‘R.I.P.D. ‘,’Red’) will be taking over the director’s chair from Neil Burger (‘The Illusionist’, ‘Limitless’). also have a feeling we’ll get some amazingly well put together action sequences in this one that may actually end up looking better than the first movie!

I think its cool that Robert Schwentke is taking the helm, as he has a pretty good visual style that will blend in well with that of Burger’s from the first film.  He’s got a track record of good action, but let’s be honest, the stories for Red and R.I.P.D. weren’t the best.  Burger was able to craft a decent movie from a book that barely made a lick of sense in its worldbuilding.  But without all the set-up, they can probably just focus on the spectacle… you know, when they’re not having Tris and Four exchange angsty glances after they almost touch.  (Thank goodness Four is a highly trained warrior.  The amount of blue balls Tris gives him would kill a normal man.)

Okay all you Divergent fans, go on and let me have it.  Defend the second book to the high heavens and call me a close-minded patoot (its a word) if you must.  You all know how much I like my YA entertainment, so I’m hoping Insurgent is a better movie than its predecessor.  But frankly, I’m not holding out much hope.  So are you excited the second movie is filming?  And do you think the change in directors is a good thing or a bad thing?  Oh, and 10 cool points to anyone who can explain to me how Kate Winslet’s character isn’t in jail after the first movie.

TNT’s Major Crimes Returns, With A Possible Spin-Off?

WFTCRMImageFetch.aspx

I was a huge fan of The Closer, and though Major Crimes is pretty much the same show, not having Kyra Sedgwick’s spunky Brenda Leigh Johnson around running things has made the show a tad less enjoyable for me to watch.  I thought Mary McDonnell’s Sharron Raydor was far more interesting when she was a ruthless I.A. investigator than she is as the quiet, strong, female lead the producers softened her up to be.  And the addition of the beyond annoying Rusty didn’t help matters.  The thing I liked about Sedgwick’s character is that she always put work in front of her personal life, so the small peeks into her domestic situation were always brief enough to be lighthearted or interesting without distracting from the crime drama.  Unfortunately, Major Crimes made their entire first two seasons pretty much about Rusty, which I got sick of pretty quick.  I was very happy when Season 2 apparently wrapped up the whole “Rusty testifying” plot that dragged out way, way too long.  When that ended, I’d hoped Rusty would begin to fade into the background.

Unfortunately for me, it sounds like Season 3 is going to have ever MOAR Rusty in it.  *le sigh.*

After two seasons of tracking Rusty (Graham Patrick Martin) through the emotional turmoil he felt after being abandoned by his family and forced to prostitute himself to survive, the TNT drama’s third season (premiering Monday, June 9 at 9/8c) will finally introduce Sharon Beck, the mother who eventually left him behind. Eureka and 24 alum Ever Carradine will play the crucial role, Major Crimes creator James Duff tells TVGuide.com.

“We begin our first episode with a different Rusty,” Duff says. “He has changed quite a bit. The experience of testifying on his own and having his say in the courtroom, reduced the whining, reduced the teenage angst. He’s sort of moving beyond and looking into his own heart and how he can make things better. Then, out of the blue, he’s knocked off stride by the reappearance of [his mother] who he had thought he was separated from for good.”

However, Rusty doesn’t tell the other Sharon in his life — Capt. Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who took Rusty in — about his mother’s reappearance, at least not right away. When he does, you can expect things to get a little messy. “The anxiety he has about his mother will reveal itself, and he [does] introduce his mother to Sharon,” Duff says. “His mother has a very different take on where he is in life than Sharon does. It’s so disturbing.”

But Rusty’s mother isn’t the only one weighing in on Rusty and Capt. Raydor’s relationship. In fact, later in the season Raydor’s husband (Tom Berenger) and her yet-to-be-cast son Ricky will have a point of view as Sharon considers adopting Rusty outright. “The theme of our first 10 episodes this season is expectations,” Duff says. “We have an expectation of a lot of things in our lives that it turns out that we have no right to expect. Family is not a given. Family is something you are sometimes obligated to create for yourself and that you embark upon with other people. How do you include other people? What does the word family mean? Do you have any right to expect that your family will always be exactly what it is?”

Really, Mr. Duff.  I DON’T CARE.  It was bad enough I had to suffer through that go-nowhere subplot with Rusty’s dad where he tries to be a good father and ends up hitting his kid because Rusty is a little snot.  No one ever pulled this melodramatic B.S. when Brenda was around, because they knew better than to mess with her.  Raydor is practically living something out of “As The World Turns” or something similar.  But even though I’m distressed by this news, the next bit gives me hope, because I love Jon Tenney (in a heterosexual life-mate type of way).  Though I was sad his show King And Maxwell got cancelled (it was a surprisingly good show), its nice to have him back with the gang at the good ol’ LAPD.  And from the sound of it, its possible his expanded role in Season 3 could lead to a spin off…

In terms of the Major Crimes family, Season 3 will also dedicate a little more time to extended family member Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), who has reprised his role from The Closer off-and-on during the first two seasons. And this season’s Fritz spotlight episode is going to be bigger than ever. “Episode 7 involves another section of the L.A.P.D. called the Special Operations Bureau,” Duff says. “The S.O.B., as its called inside the department, is in charge of the largest municipal air force in the world, the dive team, the SWAT team, the bomb team, criminal intelligence, gang intelligence, K9. … We’re rolling out S.O. B. [for] a huge, disturbing, frustrating manhunt involving Major Crimes and S.O.B. in tactical support.”

However, Duff says that some reports that the episode will serve as possible pilot for a spin-off series may be premature. “It’s an episode of Major Crimes, slightly super-sized because it’s in the middle of our season when usually do very well,” he says. “I guess the episode could serve as proof of concept for a show about S.O.B., but it’s not what I would call a spin-off or a pilot. If TNT wants to order a series based on it, I won’t tell them no. But I will tell you with absolute frankness that I have no deal to do a series called S.O.B. at this particular moment.”

But Duff doesn’t rule out seeing more of Fritz and that team if audiences respond to the story. “We thought we’d give our audiences a great big thrillride,” he says. “It puts Fritz in the center of it. If it looks interesting or feels interesting, we might pursue more stories like that, especially in the back nine.”

Is it too late to change that acronym?  Really, if you’re going to have a possible spin-off, its probably not too wise to have its initials mimic those of a swear word.  I mean, I can understand it if they’re using it as a gag for the Major Crimes unit to riff on, referring to Fitz’s unit as the S.O.B.’s, but that’s not exactly a winning title for a spin off.  Maybe just “Special Operations?”  (Hire me now, TNT.  I’ll work cheap.)

Despite my bickering, I’m really looking forward to having something enjoyable to watch on Mondays again.  TNT does make good TV, and Major Crimes has never been boring (though it has been irritating occasionally).  So I’m excited to see it return.  Major Crimes starts once more on Monday, June 9 at 9/8c on TNT.

Question for the day:  Would you watch a spin-off with Fritz? Are you excited to meet Rusty’s mother?  Do you hate Rusty as much as I do?  (Answer the last question first.)
