10 Lessons I’ve Learned From 20 Years of Blogging

I started blogging in 2004… back when dinosaurs still roamed the internet, and social media had yet to be invented. It’s still one of my greatest loves. I’ve made dear friends through blogging, and built a thriving 8 figure business.

Here’s what I’ve learned:Blogging is STILL a fantastic way to grow an audience.
It can build long term relationships and raving fans. I’ve got customers who’ve been buying from me for nearly 2 decades!
And in terms of being search engine optimised, blogging kicks social media’s ass a million times over!Reuse your social media content on your blog so you have a permanent, searchable library of your content.
Otherwise you’ll end up losing all the brilliance and beauty you create over the years!It’s better to sell your shit
I’ve seen the rise and fall of many bloggers. If you’re reliant on outside advertisers, it puts you at risk. Having your own products & programs to sell is far safer (and more lucrative!)Writing can heal you & help you make sense of your story.
Even if I didn’t earn money from it, I’d still blog. It’s been an essential therapeutic practice for me. I’ve blogged about my experiences with post partum depression, grief, chronic illness, depressive episodes and it has healed me far more than anything else.It’s the best photo album/scrapbook/diary.
It’s like a wee time machine back to visit magical moments in my life. It’s my most treasured creation.Don’t be afraid to share the hard parts of life and business.
It gives people something to connect with. Fuck looking polished. Your readers will feel less alone when they hear your story.You don’t need to sound like anyone but yourself. Embrace your weirdness!
I’m sweary, artistic, leftie, autistic & a bogan. I’m happy to share ALL of it. It means that my people know who I AM!Always get your readers to join your mailing list.

Then log off for the rest of the day!Time how long it takes you to answer emails.Create canned responses & systems when responding to emails.Set an income goal for when you’ll be able to afford a VA.Give yourself a fake VA name to improve boundaries

Dedicating time & energy to create a workspace & schedule that is as efficient and sustainable as possible is at the heart of all my business goals!

Clarity, Creativity & Connection with Friends

Darlings,

A year ago, I gathered for the first time with a group of beautiful business women that were friends or friends of friends. We thought it would be just a once off lovely dinner… but as soon as we came together, we knew we needed each other.

Since then we’ve seen each other almost every month… we’ve circled and brainstormed and gone to the spa together and partied and so much more. I can’t believe it’s only been a year since we found each other. It feels like a lifetime, and I don’t know how I lived without them. It’s a blessing to be loved and supported and cherished and held like this.

Today, we returned to our second home Noosa Valley Manor to sit by the fire and in the forest together. To dream of what the next year of our circle will be. May it guide us into even more love, clarity, joy, creativity and connection.

You’re not alone in Mistake World. It’s filled with every single creative, business owner and human to have ever walked the planet!

What matters MOST is that you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, fix the problem that’s caused it, and carry on making your magic and miracles happen.

I don’t ever want to be polished, I don’t ever want you to feel like “Leonie’s got it all together”. I most definitely don’t and there’s been some real fuckups over the years guys. I even did a podcast episode earlier this year just about the mistakes I’ve made, the mistakes I’ve made last year, over the years of my business…. there is a lot.

And there’ll be more in future, and that’s a-ok. I’d rather make mistakes and grow from them rather than get stuck up my own asshole.

How I’ve made over $13m as an Autistic entrepreneur with ADHD

Here are 7 ideas that might inspire you… or surprise you!I work with my strengths & build around my weaknesses. I know I’m shitty at remembering things, so I build systems to remember.I set multiple alarms for every meeting & appointment I have. All our business processes are detailed in Asana with walkthrough videos. This means I can easily onboard new staff as well, and I don’t have to worry about my staff forgetting things either!I know I get drained by contact with people, so I do barely any in person events and only an hour or so a month of group coaching. I restrict my Zoom meetings to the bare essential. I’m GREAT at creating, teaching & coming up with ideas, so I protect my time and energy to do that!I only hire people who are neurodivergent. I like that they are direct, say what they mean & are open to constructive feedback without their ego getting involved. Plus, in a work environment I drive neurotypical people insane (and they drive me insane too).I don’t work with a large team. I have 2 part time assistants. I’ve had a large team (i.e. 25+ people before). It burnt me out and broke my heart. Having a small, aligned team is magic for me.I work limited hours – only 10 hours a week on average. This forces me to get really intentional about what the most important tasks I need to do are. It also helps to reduce pain levels (I have back problems & hypermobility).I believe that the gifts of my brain are the REASON for my success, not a hindrance. I get that’s not everyone’s experience, but it’s what is true for me. Plus the stats back it up – the vast majority of successful entrepreneurs have ADHD symptoms (with many having official diagnosis).

Everyone is totally different, but I hope this list of ideas offers you some new tools for running your biz as the glorious neurodivergent babe that you are!

Am I Really ‘Like This’ In Real Life?

Want to know what I’m REALLY like in person? I’m… exactly like I am online. I genuinely see NO POINT in having an “online persona” that’s different from who I am. That would be freaking EXHAUSTING!!!!

I always find it so weird when people meet me in person and they say “oh my god, you’re EXACTLY who you are online”.

WHO THE FUCK ELSE WOULD I BE?!

I remember going to Melbourne with my old cubicle boss, Lily, who is still one of my best mates. We were meeting up with a bunch of online friends and one of them said, “Leonie, online you’re a bit much, and I thought, surely she’s not going to be like this in person”…

Then my boss piped in and said “I’ve sat next to Leonie for seven years now and this does not stop”.
