This feels really big right now

My love,

I’m going through something that feels really big right now, and I wanted to offer it up incase it resonates with you.

I don’t know if there’s something planetary or energetic woo-woo going on, but here’s how it feels for me:

The past couple of weeks have felt like a series of fires in my personal life. There’s been arguments and tears and heartache and confusion. While my little family unit is stronger than ever, currently everyday feels like a new fire crops up. School issues, extended family issues, arguments, my kids going through hard things. I feel like my job right now is putting out fires. Sometimes I firefight with love, sometimes I firefight with boundaries, sometimes I firefight by advocating for the ones I love.

My sweet smoothie cafe owner asked me yesterday how I was. I answered honestly, because I’m shit at lying: “Everything feels super messy, and I’m in the middle of the story. I don’t know the ending yet.”

“Ahh,” she said knowingly. “You’re uplevelling.”

It feels just like that.

As you probably know about me, I’m pretty determined when it comes to a goal. Once I’ve decided on something, I can become incredibly stubborn. I put my blinkers on, and I go for it, and I don’t often stop to reassess the situation, or whether the goal is still right for me or not.

We’ve had a plan for our family’s future for a while now about our kids’ education, and our location. And my sweet husband has kept coming to me to talk about needing to readjust that plan for what our kids are needing next, and I was reticent and unwilling. I was so fixated on what we’d already previously decided that I wasn’t open to seeing other possibilities.

But now the fires seem to be clearing away a lot of dead wood, and helping me see what is really there. I feel like with every thing that breaks or faults, I’m being given the gift of freedom. I can let go of old goals and decisions, and start looking at what is needed next. I can choose, and I can choose again.

In the meantime, I’m trying to practice good self care. The winds of change are blowing hard, but I need to nurture that deep sea of calm inside me.

I don’t know what’s next, but my blinkers are off. The world of possibilities is opening itself to me again. I bow down to it. Only a force as strong as this was enough for me to let go of my old vision.

I’m not sure what magic transformative force is weaving through my life right now, but I feel certain it must be for good reason.

I’m not sure if you’re feeling something like this too. No matter what – whether you’re in the midst of new beginnings, messy middles, or clarifying closure – may you know you’re not alone in all of this.

Holding your hand as we ride the waves together.
Ahhhh, we say. We are uplevelling.

All my love,

🦄 FREE GOODIES 🦄

Notes on “Intentional Profit” book

Dearests,

From time to time I like to share with you my notes & quotes from books I’ve inhaled. Like Cliff’s Notes, but more Leonie’s Notes, so way more rainbowy & unicorns!

Some previous book notes I’ve shared:

Getting Things DoneThe Millionaire BookletAtomic HabitsBillionaire In TrainingRaising ReadersOrder from Chaos

This year I’m committing to reading 50 non-fiction books. Usually I read between 100-400 books a year anyway, but I’ve noticed I’ve been reading a lot more fiction lately. Time to get some more nutrient-dense non-fiction in!

Today I’m sharing my notes with you from Clare Wood‘s book Intentional Profit.

Clare is an Australian-based profit coach with a background in Accounting.

I found this book a really useful primer about creating and maintaining profit in your business.

Leonie’s Notes on Intentional Profit ✍️“I’ve seen people talk about “making a million” or their “million dollar business” and for me – being the accountant that I am – I can’t help but look at other income figures they have shared… The scary thing about this is that many… people don’t know that they’re underwater financially. They’re so busy focusing on the sales and turnover that they’re not paying attention to the running costs and the money flowing out. They’re clouded by the noise of the “success” they’re having, and they’re not being intentional when monitoring the money they’re spending in order to generate that success.”“If your business makes a profit, you can eitherPay yourself a wage (and pay income tax)Distribute the money to yourself some other way such as dividends (and pay income tax)Retain the profit in the company (and pay company tax).”“Focussing on just the sales figure can be inaccurate and misleading, especially to you, the business owner. Getting clear on your profitability is the secret to building on it and increasing your success.”“If you have a spending block, this might look like a fear of investing into the business. For example, not hiring a new team member, or joining a course that could help you with your business. In your personal life, you might scrimp in certain areas. For example, you might feel really uncomfortable buying nice linen or towels. This block can be really unhelpful where it holds you back from growth in your business.”

Leonie: This set off so many light bulbs for me. I definitely can have a spending block – I’m what Denise Duffield-Thomas calls an Accumulator Archetype. Sometimes I can get so focussed on having very high profit margins that I don’t make investments that would help create even more profit. Definitely something for me to work on!

“Someone with a spending block might say: “I can absolutely double my sales, without investing a cent into coaching, marketing or building a team.”

Leonie: This made me cackle. I definitely can have this perspective!

“If you don’t invest in yourself and your business, it’s almost impossible to level up. You can’t make big, bold strides forward in what you’re trying to achieve if you’re playing it safe and sticking well within “known” parameters.”

“Think about a huge, successful company or business owner who you admire… Do you think they broke through new boundaries, created new and innovative ways of doing things and achieved massive, unthinkable goals because they continued to do things they way they’d always been done?”“One of the reasons why people succeed in life is because they don’t play it safe. They dream big. They imagine, plan and strategise, and they take calculated risks. And none of this happens without an investment: an investment of time, energy, money, planning and more.”“If you’re having a slow month client-wise, you’ll have plenty of time to work on your mindset and the strategic activities and marketing you need to get business booming again!”‘On Clare Realising She Needed To Invest More In Her Business

“Accountant Clare kept her costs lean and her profit high. I ticked along like this for a while. Business was good. But then something happened. I started to notice a few other coaches who had started their business at the same time as me talking about their results. And they weren’t playing around doing $5k – $10k months. They were making multiple six figure revenue – and even shooting for the seven figure mark.

I started to wonder – what were they doing differently to me? I took off on a snooping mission and noticed they were hiring expensive coaches. They were joining masterminds. They were attending conferences in America. They were creating content continually and had podcasts and fancy websites and flashy branding.

I had a big ‘aha’ moment. I could either keep playing it safe and keep achieving the same results – results that were good but not extraordinary – or I could put my big girl pants on and spend some money with absolutely no guarantee that it would pay off. But with the possibility that it could pay off, big-time… I knew I wanted big things (so) lean, in, I did.

Some of my investments were incredible game changers for me and my business’ growth trajectory. I joined a mastermind, and within a few months of joining, there was a massive shift, and I almost double my revenue overnight.

Other investments were slow burners. And some were downright duds.

But every time I leant in, I either learnt a valuable lesson (don’t do that again!) or had a big up level. What shifted in the most meaningful way was that regardless of the outcome, there was momentum, and it was forward momentum.”

What if your investment doesn’t pay dividends?“You’re not always going to get it right. But it’s my genuine belief that every failure or misstep gets you closer to success. If you try something and you fail, at least you are moving – it’s better than staying stagnant. I’ve failed a thousand times in my business, and I know I’ll fail again in the future. You learn lessons from the loss, adapt and evolve for the future.”“It is very unlikely you’ll create huge, meaningful, life-changing results unless you’re willing to invest along the way.”“Not all investments pay off – however some of them do, big time. And you’ll never have the chance to experience massive growth and achieve your dreams if you don’t try.”“If you notice that flicker of envy or jealousy pop up when you see what someone else is achieving, creating or doing with their life, ask yourself: does what they have really excite you on a soul level?”

“If your money plan isn’t on track, that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you have failed. It does mean you have new information to work with, and you can readjust your goals, spending and plans accordingly.”

“Sometimes you might choose to intentionally run your business at a short term loss while you invest in growth and scale. For example, in 2021, my business was still quite profitable but my profit margin was lower than usual as I intentionally invested heavily back into the business.
These investments included a high-end business coach, full new branding and website, and researching, writing and publishing this book. They weren’t decisions I made on a whim; they were strategic decisions made about a short term investment that would deliver results over the long term.”On intentional marketing

“The more consistent I am with my marketing, the more consistent my results are.”

“Marketing is the backbone of your business growth. Even the biggest most well known brands in the world such as McDonalds, Coca-Cola and Apple, still invest into marketing consistently. Why? Because you can’t attract new customers and continue to engage with and retain your existing brand and clientele if they don’t know what you do and how you can help them.”“There is no one marketing strategy that is right for every business.”“It’s important that you have several ways for finding new clients. As a guide, I’d recommend for a small business to have (at least) five top-of-funnel marketing activities they regularly undertake.I love to share my clients’ wins and achievements. Sharing the transformations, stories and experiences of your clients can be a powerful way of connecting and adding value without selling.Non-linear business growth“I want to set the record straight on… the concept that growth needs to be linear. Newsflash: growth isn’t a straight line upwards. Businesses move in cycles. It is completely normal to have periods of stagnation or even contracting profits as your business grows.”“We have a misconception… that our business needs to grow month on month and year on year and if that’s not happening, then something is “wrong”.“Even in many global organisations with very high levels of income… sales and profit go up and down. Sometimes they vary wildly. This is a normal part of business. It is very rare to go up and up and up without some periods of stagnation or even going backwards. And depending on where you are in your business journey, sometimes you have to slow down in order to prepare to go to a new level.”Issues hiring staff“I’ve saved this one for last because this is the big one. Hiring staff can be a minefield, for so many different reasons.”

Leonie says: LOLZ. OH GOD DONT I KNOW. Hiring a large team and also the wrong people has been the cause of 99% of all my business stress and distress. It scarred me so much that 7 years ago I right-sized my business and streamlined it back to one VA, and I’ve kept it that way all this time. It’s only in the last year that I’ve healed enough to possibly look at having more!

The biggest pain point for most business owners is finding the right fit and then ensuring that they’re managing the person they do hire so they’re getting the most out of them. The fear of getting this wrong can keep people stuck and prevent them from taking action, which means they don’t have the support staff they need to grow and scale the way they want to.”

Leonie: OOOOOH IT’S NOT JUST ME THANK GODDDDDD

“Hire slowly. Don’t rush in. Check their references – actually call them, don’t just rely on written testimonials. Start with a trial and include a probation period. Schedule regular check-ins so you can both give feedback about how the role is going. DO ALL OF IT. Don’t skip any step. The easiest way to cause issues is to fast-track this process, so don’t be tempted to go for the quick solution.”“Fire quickly. If you don’t see a clear path forward, rip the bandaid off sooner rather than later. You’ve intentionally hired this person to make your life easier, so if that’s not the reality of the situation, it’s time to move them on.”“Have direct conversations. It’s actually kinder to give people clear feedback and expectations than to pretend everything is fine.”On Resilience

“All problems – no matter how big or insurmountable they seem – have a solution.”

“When you develop your “resilience muscles” by facing each challenge head on, recognising the core of the issue, then developing a solution, you begin to understand that anything that doesn’t break you truly does make you stronger. Hopefully, you take the loss, learn the lesson and move on a little more armed and prepared for what comes next.”Hooray!

Hope you found that useful, my loves. I figured typing this up and illustrating part of it would make it stick even more in my brain. Had such great insights into where I need to focus my growth over the next year. I so appreciate Clare’s pragmatic accounting approach to expansion!

To more intentional profit for us all!

Big love,

My 2024 Goal: 50 non-fiction books!

Dearests,

I have a new type of goal this year… I want to read 50 non-fiction books in 2024.

Now ya’ll know me… I’m an absolute bookworm anyway. 📚 🐛 I usually read between 100-400 books a year anyway. You can check out all my best books lists from the last 12 years here.

I’ve been noticing in the last few years that I’ve been reading less non-fiction though – I’ve been in a real novel phase. Which is gorgeous and fun… but I’d love to add back in more of the nutrient-dense non-fiction as well.

So far this year I’ve already finished:

“What About Men” by @mscaitlinmoran. EVERYTHING this woman writes is 10/10 incredible I reckon, and this one is no exception. It will absolutely be one of my top books for the year already. This book gave me so much more understanding and compassion for how the patriarchy has damaged men. Gosh it’s a funny, touching, incredible read. Highly recommend!

“Intentional Profit” by @clare_wood_coach. A short, useful read about intentionally investing in your business to create more revenue and profits. So appreciated this one!

“Believe IT” by @jamiekernlima. This business memoir shares Jamie’s story about creating and selling a billion dollar company in 10 years. Absolutely fascinating!

“It Doesn’t Have To Be Crazy At Work” by @jasonfried. I found some really useful takeaways from this book about creating sane, productive, creative work environments. I love that they experiment to see what works for them in their company. (Also, I know they definitely borged their response to the Black Lives Matter movement. I hope they’ve improved it since then!)

“The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work” by @gottmaninstitute. We’re about to hit our 23rd love anniversary, and this was a really useful tuneup on healthy relationship habits.

Would love to hear your recommendations for more non-fiction to read this year. I especially love books on business, money, creativity, parenting & self-development.

Can’t wait to see what I learn this year!

Big hugs,

57 Things I Did In 2023

Dearests,

I love when Austin Kleon writes his 100 Things list for the year. I shared my list in 2020, in 2021 and in 2022. Now here we are again. A tradition. Not quite as long running as my Best Books of the Year lists, but I’m working on it!

Here’s what I did, loved, watched, experienced this year:

I returned to social media after two years away. I have really strong boundaries and systems for using social media now – I teach about them as a bonus in Marketing without Social Media. At the moment, it’s all feeling pretty good!Settled our two mermaids into a new school. It was a big change to move to a more mainstream school after years of alternative schooling and homeschooling. It’s been a real blessing to my sanity however, and I’m so proud of my mermaids for how well they’ve coped with the change. I’m so grateful to be at a school that has more accountability and transparency than I’ve experienced before. I had to get over a lot of my own fears about mainstream schooling, and it’s been surprisingly healing.I ran a sold out goal planning workshop in January with my babe Tash Corbin and 50 other gorgeous souls. It was DELICIOUS. And yes, we absolutely wore matching outfits. WHY WOULDNT WE.Got really into one stitch this year. Cross stitch is a bit too small and finicky for my eyeballs, but big chunky stitches work well. Ended up finishing four pieces in 2023.
Created a brand new program called Midas Touch. It’s very different from what I’ve created in recent years – much more mystical. It felt like another leap of faith that was divinely guided, and the response was just incredible.Moved to a new accountant locally after being long-distance with my old accountants. It felt like a really big shift as we’d been with our old accountants for 8 years, and they’d given me so much support and guidance when I needed it. It’s been a blessing to have someone locally again though so me and my love can go to quarterly planning meetings together.Spent a lot of Friday afternoons at the beach after school with the kids, defragging from the week that was. Water and blue can heal a vast quantity of things, I find.Had two big Academy launches this year making $280,000 in November and $230,000 in March. Wildly proud!Created & taught ten brand new workshops in my Academy including:Set Up Your Website That SellsDecide Your Pricing & Set Up PaymentsSet Up Your Mailing ListMaster Tech For Business SuccessHow To Decide What Business To DoCreate A Lead MagnetCreate A NewsletterThe Two Page Marketing PlanSane & Profitable Social Media MarketingPlan Your 2024 Biz SuccessRan monthly group coaching calls for my Academy members… always so much fun!Got an assignment from the angels to run my first in person women’s circle in years. It was magical.
Read over 100 books. Here’s my list of my favourites!Created a bunch of new templates for my Academy members including: Yearly Business Growth TrackerMonthly Financials & Growth TrackerAnnual Marketing CalendarLaunch Results TrackerFinancial Goals TrackerWeekly Content PlannerLead Magnet & Webinar Success TrackerAffiliate Link TrackerContent Library PlannerWent on four holidays in 2023 – all within 30 minutes of our house. Travelling further with that with our elderly dog became impossible this year, so we rented some holiday homes nearby instead. We had some magic times at river houses, and I’m so grateful!
Spoke at the Heart Centred Business Conference in Noosa (you can watch the video here!) It was absolutely magic, and I’m so grateful I got to hang out with old, dear online friends like Kerry Rowett, Denise Duffield-Thomas and Victoria Gibson along with meeting so many new ones. Plus my local business mastermind sisters were there as well… it felt like swimming in an ocean of love and friendship.Spoke at the Ausmumpreneur National Conference in Sydney, and won four awards: Online Education Award, Author of the Year, People’s Choice Business Coach and Creative Entrepreneur of the Year. It was such a huge spark in my year, and I’m so in awe of the magic and heart I experienced there.
Just having a little cuddle puddle on the floor with some new friends. The usual conference behaviour.
Me & my new sister from the same soul womb Jorja. Love that I can now get her to deliver ridiculously good bouquets of donuts to my beloveds in Canberra. Also got to visit the Ken Done gallery while I was in Sydney. Look at me! I am the happiest koala that has ever koala’d in her life! This year, I knew we needed some extra support in my business. For years it was  me and my right-hand-gal Zita doing everything. Then a couple of years ago, we hired Lydia part-time to look after our Customer Service emails. I’ve been super reticent to hire any more than that as I’ve managed a large team of 20+ people before and really hated it. I was allergic to hiring anyone more than what I had, but as the business became busier this year, I knew we needed more support so we didn’t burn Zita out. I got Zita to do all the hiring and managing as that’s just not my gift at all, and it worked FABULOUSLY. We ended up with two more part-time VAs who are just brilliant humans with kind hearts. I feel so lucky! All together they still do less hours than one full-time person, but it feels like a great fit and much more spacious.Had a full day videoshoot with a crew of 20+ models, videographers and assistants. We created the most FUN, ridiculous, wonderful video to promote the Academy, and it was just SUCH a joy to create it. Oh my heart! So full of gladness!I made a free weekly biz planner worksheet!Re-started regular kinesiology/coaching sessions with Kerry Rowett after a few years break from getting coaching or energy work done. It’s made SUCH a difference for me, and was one of my best investments of the year for me.Some of my favourite days this year have been the ones spent with my local business goddess mastermind. I adore adore adore Amanda Rootsey, Cass Deller, Tash Corbin, Madi Beaufort, Claire Riley and Brigit Esselmont with all my heart.
I designed myself a rainbowy webinar backdrop – you can see it here in all its maximalist glory!I wrote about the unexpected blessings of losing my brother at a young age. It’s his birthday today as I write this – Happy birthday, big brother! I’ll celebrate for you with a pack of teeth lollies!I wrote about finding peace with my cousin’s death.Had a paint night with my beloved Madi. Was a finalist for the Australian Small Business Champions Awards.Watched Queen Charlotte – was one of the best TV series I’ve ever seen. So powerful and left me weeping.Created a free workshop: Cash Crush – How to Make Money and Save Money even when times are tough!Made a chill neutral minimalist sign for my office. LOLLLLLZ.My naturally blonde hair became darker after my second pregnancy, and I missed showing my Nordic heritage. I realised this year that I could *woah* bleach it blonde again. WHAT A REVELATION. I SHOULD TELL OTHER PEOPLE OF THIS DISCOVERY!
Donated over $8,000 to Bush Heritage Australia to help them make their biggest nature reserve purchase in history. Most popular podcast episode I shared in 2023? This hilarious one about all the ridiculous, awful business mistakes I’ve made!Shared what’s coming to the Academy in 2024.Had a spa day with some of my local business mastermind. I love them soooo much I want to squeeze them until their eyes pop out.I wrote about plovers and mothers and the fragile season.Wrote about some feelings on ageing and midlife.Did a bunch of puzzles with my family (and my old cubicle boss L when she visited!) Our favourites are from Eeboo!Got obsessed with Motion (a productivity app) then realised it was fucking up my mindset, so I embraced my messy magic instead.Spent some splendid time making polymer clay statues with my baby mermaids.
Earlier this year, I struggled with (a rare for me) bout of low self confidence. Thankfully it has mostly eased because of a combination of working with Kerry, and heart-to-hearts with other entrepreneur sisters.Got really into playing Mario Kart, Mario Party & Puyo Puyo Tetris on the Nintendo Switch with my kids.Drank many emotional support bubble teas. (My favourite: passionfruit green tea with tapioca and rainbow jelly.)Reached over 160,000 downloads of my podcast Leonie Dawson Refuses To Be Categorised. Most popular episode? This hilarious one about the biggest mistakes I’ve made in business.Played an obscene amount of cards and board games with my kids and husband. My favourite of all time is Monopoly Deal… we’ve nearly worn out our packet after a year of almost daily use. Other favourites are Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza and Ecosystem.Speaking of, had a ridiculously raucous board games night with my kids and Madi, Mandy and Hannah. There was a LOT of yelling from the competitive ones amongst us. Not by Mandy though. Mandy was her usual gracious, gentle, loving self, and of course she won. My children were enchanted by her. Mandy’s basically a Disney princess walking through the forest with birds singing to her. She is leaving the Sunny Coast this year and I am both THRILLED for her and DISTRAUGHT that I didn’t get to spend enough time with her. What a magical, magical human. We are so lucky.Got a new tattooooooo to wrap around the only other tattoo I have. The words were from a healing session I had with Kerry Rowett, and they struck me as powerful medicine. It’s easy to love life when it is easy… but how can I love life even when it is hard and painful and uncertain and grief-stricken? That is the question I want to keep moving into.Watched American Born Chinese with my family. We were all OBSESSED with it. So beautifully done!Got a unicorn neon light for my birthday, and went on a river ferry with my family. It was such a beautiful, tender time.
The day after my birthday, we lost our beloved doggy Angel at the grand old age of 19. We were SO LUCKY to have her for so long.Ran a free workshop with my assistant/goblin Zita sharing about the business changes we were making.Started painting with Jane Davenport’s Layer Cake paints. They are a game changer… I adore them! The ease of watercolour pans with the vibrancy and layerability of acrylic!
Did a stack of interviews on other podcasts. You can see the complete list here. (Also, want to interview me on your podcast/Youtube show/telesummit? Apply here!)Did private pilates sessions with the incredible Victoria Brockfield. She is such a divine human and bright spark and we have such a big connection. And now she is LEAVVVVVVING MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE AND I AM NOT OKAY WITH IT. Also, if you are in Melbourne, see if you can do pilates with her. That way I will still feel like I am in her energetic field somehow. I’m creepy like that.Saw my beloved osteopath Dr Sophie Toland on the regular. She’s a miracle worker with her hands AND her head. She’s helped me fix my mental shit while she worked on my body shit, all while looking like a sexy Amish person. I hope she doesn’t read this. If she does HI SOPH. SORRY. WILL MAKE IT UP TO YOU NEXT TIME I SEE YOU WITH SOME TRULY UNHINGED GOSSIP. Do I know what that gossip will be? No. But I’m sure I’ll come up with something.Dislocated my jaw. LOLZ. Hypermobility really does mean my bones can’t stay in place for shit.

Okay, I was going to finish this list… but I was resisting it. And I realised I wanted to go deeper than just a numbered list. Concise isn’t for me. Long and winding is.

There’s so many things I want to be grateful for from 2023. And they aren’t achievements, they aren’t short and succinct and simple. But they are the things I will hold most precious and dear to me from 2023.

I want to remember the awe I felt at watching my love care through our elderly dog Angel through her final stages of life. How steadfast he was in loving her, unwavering in his devotion and care. I swear she lived to the grand old age that she did because of how attentive he was.

I am grateful I got to be a death midwife to her as she had her final breaths. It was a profound honour to walk with her up to the final threshold, and witness as she took the door to the next. She curled up like a fawn in the forest as she returned to the womb of Spirit. It was breathtakingly painful and beautiful all at once.

I am grateful I could hold space for my family through this grief. How I could open my mama arms wide to hold all my family’s feelings and pain. How it brought my love and I even closer. I am grateful that my early experiences of loss have shaped me into someone who is okay with grief.

I am grateful that the months and years of caring for Angel were so hard that I had to dig deeper. That it forced me to return to prayer, to ask my Angels every night:

Please help me be wider and deeper and softer to hold all of this. Please help me to be more compassionate and a living embodiment of love. What would you have me say, what would you have me do for the highest light and good of all? I am willing to see things from a new perspective.

That prayer held me in good stead. I didn’t have to know all the answers, just take the next right step after the other. I didn’t do it all perfectly, but I did my best. And it was a worthy practice, one that I continue.

I’m glad for all the ways I was reminded to lay down my weapons and judgments and return to the energy of loving compassion. I feel like I’d become somehow more hardened and guarded over the last few years of Covid, and it was time to lay down some of those fences down.

And lastly, I’m grateful for all the memories created with my sweet kids and husband this year. I want to remember sitting on the dock of a river house at sunset with my eldest daughter, watching a storm roll in together, the air magic and alive. I want to remember our whoops of joy and laughter when we tried fishing for the first time. I want to remember how the light dripped with gold, and there was no other place I wanted to be on earth.

What a year.

I’m so deeply lucky.

Thank you for sharing it all with me.

Big love,

Best Investments I Made In 2023

My loves,

My kids are back in school after 7 weeks off. I feel like I say this all the time, but I really do love having them home on holidays. We’re just SO GOOD at slothing about together, playing games and making art.

We’ve also been working on a big group project patchwork graffiti style artwork that their friends (and even one of their friend’s mum!) added to. There’s still some more to add to, but gosh it makes me happy.

(The dragons are from my Wings of Fire obsessed 9 year old! She loves doing enormously intricate dragon drawings 🐉 while she listens to the audiobooks.)

Now they are back in the land of school, I’ve been spending time reviewing my last year and getting clear on my vision for 2024. I’ve even taken on an enormous project of going back through all my goal workbooks since 2010 and colour-coding all my business stats and major projects into one enormous spreadsheet. I feel SO LUCKY that I’ve got these as reminders of the different lessons, energies and cycles in my life and business for the last 14 years.

Here’s what my office floor currently looks like:

As part of my review process, I’ve been reflecting on my best investments I made in 2023. And I thought I’d share them with you incase they help you too!

Leonie’s Best Investments of 2023

✨ Committing to regular intuitive healing/coaching

Part way through 2023, my beloved goblin assistant and a dear friend staged a wee invention on me. They lovingly told me that they could see that I was struggling with my mindset, and was tying myself up in knots. They asked if I needed to return to therapy or do something different to get out of my spirals. I talked it out with them and shared that I’d tried Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 2022, and found it had made me obsess even more over my problems.

That’s when my brilliant goblin assistant made terrific use of her Psychology degree, and told me that CBT was gold standard for neuro TYPICAL people, but NOT for neurodiverse people. She asked me what had helped me previously, and I told them that I’d always found intuitive healing and positive psychology with trusted practitioners like Hiro Boga and Kerry Rowett enormously useful. I’d previously done 10 years of committed work with them, but had taken 5 years off from it. Goblin girl Zita recommended I start doing it again and see if it helped again.

So I dived back into fortnightly sessions with Kerry Rowett and it’s made an enormous difference. Some of the most illuminating moments and insights from the past year came from my sessions for her, and I feel so much more like myself again. And I made hundreds of thousands of dollars more from the ideas we came up with, and the work we did in those sessions so I wasn’t so stuck and afraid! HOORAY!

🏆 Applying for awards & going to conferences!

I’m such a hermit that I don’t often travel for work or go to conferences. This year I committed to applying for business awards & I spoke at TWO conferences as well. It all became some of the biggest highlights of the year for me!

Spoke at the Heart Centred Business Conference in Noosa (and got to see so many of my beloved friends including Kerry RowettDenise Duffield-ThomasVictoria GibsonLouise O’ReillyAmanda RootseyCass DellerBrigit EsselmontClaire RileyTash Corbin and Madi Beaufort. The whole experience filled my heart and healed me in so many ways. (See my pics here!)Actually flew on a plane for the first time in 5 years and spoke at the Ausmumpreneur National Conference in Sydney! I met sooooo many incredible souls who deeply touched me. And I brought home four gold trophies – Online Education Award, People’s Choice Business Coach (for the second time!!!), Author of the Year and Creative Entrepreneur of the Year. I also had a freaking MAGICAL time traipsing around Sydney on a mission to find everyday miracles. You can see my IG stories of it all here!
Definitely making it a priority to continue applying for awards & going to more conferences!
🧺 Getting my laundry done for me!

At the start of 2023, my love approached me and said:

“Hon, I notice you really struggle with doing your laundry. You leave it for weeks, then have to spend a whole day doing laundry, and you’re super grouchy and stressed that day. Have you thought about just getting a laundry service for your clothes?”

(I should note here: I don’t do his laundry. He has always done his own.)

I had a search around, and found an Australian service called The Laundry Lady. You can book online, and someone will come to your door to pick up your washing. Then they return it 24 hours later washed and folded (and even ironed if you want).

It’s been by far the best act of self care for me and has reduced so much of my ADHD overwhelm and stress. I feel so taken care of when my laundry returns cleaned and folded!

🧹 My robot vacuum/mop

Along the same lines, I love my robo vac/mop. I don’t love having cleaners in my house from an energy and ASD front, so having a wee lil robot fairy is magical.

📖 Doing a COO Accelerator program with my goblin

In 2023 I realised that I’d done a tops job at helping my goblin/assistant train up on all the skills I’m good at: copywriting, marketing, launches etc. But I couldn’t train her on the skills I’m not as good at: hiring, managing, stats, systems.

She’s been working with me for over 6 years starting as a Customer Service Virtual Assistant (VA) and over the years she’s grown into my Online Business Manager (OBM). It felt like the next right thing was to help her train up in the areas I’m not as great at. She was keen, so we did a hunt around and asked for recommendations, and ended up enrolling in Laurie Stirling’s COO Accelerator program

Laurie was also open to me and Gobbo (aka Goblin aka Zita) to work through the program together and it’s been BRILLIANT. It gave us such a good framework for both of us to build our skills, set up more systems and have important conversations to get on the same page. I feel like it’s set us up for even more success in 2024.

🎉 I’m ready for 2024 🎉

I feel like I made some good investments in 2023, and am excited to keep doing the work in 2024.

My priority for the next year is to continue making the Brilliant Biz & Life Academy the most incredible resource for all our members. We’ve got 48 new trainings being added into the Academy plus I have more ideas percolating. It feels so lovely and exciting and sustainable all at once. What a blessing and what a relief!

I also have some new dreams for free content to share with you… including heading into a gorgeous podcast studio to create a video podcast with one of my darlingest friends. More inspiration, fun, love and wisdom coming your way!

Thank you for being here, sharing this magic journey with me.

I’m so very, very lucky!

Big love,

The Great Annual Goal Getter Workbook Giveaway for Non Profits!

Hey possums,

I am THRILLED it’s that time of year again, where we have the honour of donating the digital Brilliant Year Workbooks to Not For Profit and Charity organisations!

Are you a social worker or a part of a non profit organisation?

Does your organisation work with underprivileged or disadvantaged people?

Or do you know someone who is?

We’d love to donate as many copies of the digital LIFE & BIZ Brilliant Year Workbooks as you’d like, for using with your clients

We can supply both the digital Life and Business editions – whatever you feel would work for your clients!

Every single year since the beginning of the workbooks, we have been donating them to non profit organisations. I’ve also run a meditation + goal setting retreat at a local safe house which was such a beautiful experience.

Just because the workbooks are now undated doesn’t mean our yearly giveaway will stop! In fact, now you’ll be able to apply whenever you’d like!

Sharing the workbooks is my way of being able to visit even more places, helping raise spirits and creating change in the world.

The feedback from the organisations has been really, really wonderful.

Organisations got a lot out of it, their clients got a lot out of it. Clients felt much more inspired, motivated and empowered after using them, and often requested more workshops to have accountability about following through on their goals over the year.
