***REVIEW*** 21 Nights by Cloud Buchholz

41AJcRGsDrL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-v3-big,TopRight,0,-55_SX278_SY278_PIkin4,BottomRight,1,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_

This was the first ‘true’ erotica book I’ve ever read. To be honest I’m quite sure if I was disappointed or not. I read the novella about six weeks ago and I’ve only just worked out how I felt about it.

The nights are not in order in the book, so you do have to concentrate on where you are in the story and if it’s future or past. If I’m completely honest I have no idea what happened to the couple at the end of the story, and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing? Also, I’m not that sure that I cared either.

I liked the idea of the story and the base plot was great, it was about a single mom looking for some no strings kinky fun. And boy did she get that! The sex scenes were fantastic, gripping and well written. Having said that, if you’re not into sex scene, after sex scene, and want a lot of story to go with your sex, this isn’t the book for you. The author could have done a lot more with that plot, but having said that, it is true erotica.

I liked the cover, it shows you what you’re getting and it appealed to me. I didn’t really connect with the characters, I couldn’t even tell you their names. I’m a romance author and I have a lack of understanding of women that don’t crave commitment. Maybe that’s just me?

In my honest opinion, this is the book that you keep locked away in your bedside cabinet, so that your kids can never read it. You take it out when you’re lonely and perhaps looking for a little ‘inspiration’…or even when you’re not to lonely?

Because I know how hard writing sex is, and due the authors inventiveness during some of the scenes I award this novella:

Three kinky corsets.

(That’s three stars to everyone else)

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Sorry, I’ve been away!

Well, what a ride it’s been! I’ve been away from the blog for a while now. I couldn’t even find the time to say I wasn’t accepting review requests!

My husband retired from the military in August. We lived in a military owned house and originally planned to buy a brand new house off plot. There was something niggling at me about buying that house. I can’t say for sure what it was…but it was there like a big black storm cloud hanging over my head. Anyway, the house was due to be built in November this year. I then got wind that the developer had been struggling to get houses built by the date they said they would be built by. We would have been pushing our luck hugely with defence estates by staying in our married quarter, let alone any time after November.

I totally lost it. Pushed by fear, and of course intuition we started looking at what was on the market and set up appointments to see houses. When you make appointments with estate agents (or realtors) you suddenly get bombarded with information on other properties in the area.

I was getting my nails done, in a mortgage free kind of way ;) when I saw it. Now, call me insane but we’d been looking at new properties all under ten years old, but when I saw it I knew. The property was built in 1820 and I loved it. As soon as I got home I showed my husband who agreed it was okay.

The pictures of the place were amazing and I was imagining myself in that house already. My husband had become pessimistic about pictures taken by estate agents, understandably so, we’d been to see a house that very day that looked gorgeous, but when we arrived it was an expensive hovel, and that’s being kind.

IMG_2136

The estate agent tried to put us off the house because it’s on a main road, the problem is that most period properties are on a main road which is why they were built there in the first place, long before  there was the volume of traffic that we have nowadays.

Anyway, we went to see the house and we absolutely loved it. The owner stated that she was surprised to get an offer from us because we were only there for ten minutes!

When you’re looking to find your dream home you think actually finding it is the hard part…how wrong could I be…

IMG_2413

Getting a mortgage is one of the hardest things we’ve ever faced as a couple. That’s not to say that we haven’t been through hard times, we have, but we truly were in this together.

We held our breaths after our offer had been accepted and tread water hoping and praying that my husband would get a job offer. Step one…he was successful. We were overjoyed.

Step two…a five hour appointment where they went through all of our incomes and outgoings. It’s like someone going through your knicker draw, or worse your bedside cabinet (maybe that’s just me ;)).

We received notification that we had been successful, I’d been at a lunchtime function with my husband that day. I cried my eyes out and proceeded to get leathered. The pictures aren’t pretty!

Next, there were some technical issues, some of which I still don’t understand. It put a delay on everything and meant that the mortgage offer had to go back to the surveyors and then the underwriters. By this point we were living amongst head high boxes, we’d changed our removal date three times. I bought a ton of old furniture and shabby chic’ed the life out of it. The colour of every wall emblazoned in my mind. Paint and accessories paid for and packed away ready for our dream home. What could possibly go wrong?

After a long twelve hour shift I arrived home on a Friday evening to a very grey, sickly looking husband who’d received an e-mail from our mortgage advisor saying that our mortgage offer had been withdrawn. Considering we’d been ready to move on the following Monday this was the last straw. I arrived at work on Saturday morning whilst my husband was at the bank trying to pull everything back. I couldn’t function, couldn’t even speak without bursting into tears. Of course, my boss sent me home. I was lucky she was there that day.

I went home, feeling sick, tired, and withdrawn. How was this happening to us? I looked at my kids and was overcome with guilt and fear. Were we going to be homeless? We started looking at rental properties through sad eyes. Friends and family offered words of reassurance but they didn’t do anything to take away the pain we were living through.

The following Tuesday the offer was reinstated! Phew! We were on it like a car bonnet, we moved on Thursday that week…that wasn’t the last of our problems though, the previous owner tried to delay despite having given the go ahead previously. Luckily about five different people used their powers of persuasion to display how she’d made a statement and then withdrew it, hadn’t we been through enough?

So, since then I’ve been stuck with a paint brush in my hand, or a knife to open a box…it’s all been a whirlwind but I’m happy to say that we’re all settled in our new home. It’s beautiful…

I can tell you though, it’s very strange going from this…

***INTERVIEW*** with Keren Hughes, author of Nothing Like the First Time.

Keren (1)

I’m pleased to have interviewed Keren as part of her blog tour for Nothing Like The First Time. I loved the book, here’s a link to my review.

I’ve watched Nothing Like The First Time climb the Amazon charts ever since its release. What do you think has been the secret of your success?

Honestly? I believe that readers taking a chance on my novel is what has helped me achieve success and as long as I have readers, I have everything I need.

Who is your favourite author, or book, or series?

Oh Lucy, there are just so many. Too many to name! I love JK Rowling, Richelle Mead, Abbi Glines, Colleen Hoover, Karen Rock, Julieanne Lynch, Natalie Hancock, Gracen Miller Summer Walden, E.L. James, and of course, you! (That’s not even a patch on how many authors I love but I can’t go on all day!)

*L.T. blushes and fans herself with a copy of her own book*

How did you come up with your plot and what inspired you to write the book?

NLTFT was inspired by a song by Lady Antebellum. The song is Nothin’ Like The First Time and the lyrics are just beautiful. I listened to it so often that one day I found I just had to write about it.

That’s so great! Both of my books are based on songs too. I think they make the best books because every song tells several stories. I love that song too, I’d never heard it before I read this book and now I’m a fan.

Who would you choose to play your characters if the book were to become a film?

Honestly? I don’t know. I really like the models I based the two main characters around, but they’re models not actors. If you want to know who I based them around, just Google search for Karlie Kloss and Toni Berenguer.

I saved them the trouble ;).

What do you like to do with your free time?

I like to read, write, and take time out to be with my son. I am a single mom to a 7 year old and I love just being with him. He enjoys reading too so it’s good that we can share that passion.

What are you working on at the moment?

A story about a woman whose husband commits suicide. It’s her journey of self-discovery and she has to learn if she is ready to love again.

What is your favourite food?

Hmm… I guess Christmas dinner. I love a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. I especially love pigs in blankets. But no sprouts!!

*Tuts* Keren, you must eat your greens! ;)

Do you suffer with writers block? If so, what do you do to overcome it?

I have suffered it once so far. It was when I went to write my first sex scene. Luckily I have a BFF who is an erotica author so I spoke to her about it and she said if I didn’t write it there and then, I never would. So I put some music on and began to write. The music? Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard and Freak Me by Another Level.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Hopefully I’ll have many more books published. I’d like to meet a nice guy and settle down too.

What do you drink at the pub? (An L.T. Kelly special question so I can get you a drink ;) LOL)

Carling. Pints of. People think it’s unladylike to drink pints but honestly, I don’t care. I go out on a Friday with friends and I drink about 6 pints of Carling and have a laugh.

L.T. Kelly smiles and turns to the barman, “One pint of Carling and a glass of Rose for the ladies please.”

Thanks for a great interview, Keren! Remember to check out my review of NLTFT! The link is at the top of the page and contains links and info for the book.

There is also a Rafflecopter giveaway! Please enter HERE.

Cassandra Larsen is not the type to give in. But Carlo Leone is not the type to give up. The 27 year old CEO of a prominent industrial company, Carlo is rich. Powerful. And devastatingly handsome. Tragic events in his past have caused him to be guarded, to view women as playthings in a provocative game he and his colleague created. When Carlo meets 21 year old Cassandra at the horse stable he owns, he is instantly drawn to her beauty and feisty nature, but beneath her spunk, there is vulnerability and want. She will be a challenge–a perfect candidate for the contest.

Wary of relationships due to her rocky history, Cassandra is determined to resist Carlo’s smoldering eyes and maddening charm. Will she surrender? And will Carlo discover that this has become more than just a game–before it’s too late?

Review

I was approached by the author and asked to review this new release. I loved the sound of the book, so I purchased it.

This title sounded right up my street, it had the makings of a story that I love to love; a gorgeous, rich and dominant man. A heroine who can hold her own, and is suffering her own mental torment.

Now, I’m not sure if I’ve just read too many of these books with the same base plot or not? But, when I finished this book I just felt disappointed. I spent the book waiting for a twist or something new, something I hadn’t read before in another book of its ilk.

Don’t get me wrong, the characters were great and I didn’t fail to connect with any of them. Though, I really wanted Cassandra to stand up for herself. I was begging for it. The hero, Carlo leaves the girl hanging with weeks in between their meetings. She just takes it on the chin and never says a word. She gives in to him at every turn and never says a word. I wanted to punch some fight into her, even just a sliver.

Carlo is hot and there is a hint at his troubled past. That’s how he becomes involved in a competition with his work colleague, Brock. I think this was a competition to get women to fully submit to the men, wether thats the first one to get the women to submit, or the one who gets the women to go the furthest, I’m unsure? Anyway, Brock turns out to be a villain. Though, I guessed that pretty much as soon as he appeared in the story.

What I’m saying is that I found the plot very predictable, I spent the reading time waiting for something new and refreshing to occur. A twist on the norm, but it never happened.

What disappointed me the most was that this author is clearly the master of her craft. Her writing is smooth and seamless. I didn’t even skip one sentence, that rarely happens. She executes each characters feelings, each scene setting, EVERY SINGLE LAST SEX SCENE (yes, I meant to write that in capitals), with utter perfection. Everything about her writing style appealed to me.

I usually clamber to write a review following finishing a book, I didn’t want to write this one because this author does rock and I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was bad mouthing her. I personally think that Landon may just pull something out of the bag in the next book of the series. She’s just too good not to. And, I will read it.

The cover art called to me, the authors writing style and characters are amazing. It was simply the base plot that failed to reach me. Bearing all that in mind, and not forgetting the overall enjoyment I got from reading this book I award Point of Submission.

Three horses and a foal – a 3.5 star rating.

(in keeping with the horsey nature of the book)

***REVIEW*** Crazy Red by Kaley Craig

22498906

This is book one in the Jackson Sugar series. The author wrote to me and asked me if I’d review her book. I’m so glad that I accepted.

The story is set in America in the late 1960′s. The settings have been well thought out and easily send you back to that time through powerful scene setting.

This was a book that captivated me to the point that when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it. The main character, Maggie, suffers so much torment by her strange mother Sybil that I spent the first half of the book going from weeping to sobbing. I didn’t realise it was possible to feel so much hate and disgust for a fictional character until now. I wanted Sybil to be real so that I could beat the living crap out of her.

The dialogue is authentic and well written. Each scene is carefully crafted, I felt like I was in the room watching the characters and feeling their emotions.

Maggie is overwhelmed when the most eligible bachelor in the community falls for her. Their love is sweet and beautiful, I enjoyed the scenes between Will and Maggie the most. As with everything in Maggie’s life Sybil find a way to tear them apart.

It seems that Maggie’s life is falling to pieces before her very eyes. Yet she struggles on and finds a way to survive until she is finally ‘rescued’ by a handsome and mysterious stranger, Edmond Jackson. But will her troubles end with meeting a rich man? I have a feeling that it won’t.

I truly love Maggie. She’s a fighter that has struggled her whole life. She’s completely mixed up and it’s easy to see how its happened. Although her surroundings improved dramatically by the end of ‘Crazy Red’ I’m not sure that her predicament has.

I think the cover has room for improvement, perhaps the author could think about have her illustrator draw a cover for this book. The cover doesn’t begin to display the complexity of the work within.

I hope that Kaley has cracked out the second book. If not she had better get a bloody shimmy on. I have a hunger in my stomach that only she can fill.

This book needs more reviews. This book needs to be read and talked about. This book deserves more attention.

Well done Ms. Craig, and thank you!

I award Crazy Red 5 stunning redheads.

***REVIEW*** The Mine (Northwest Passage Book 1) by John A. Heldt

41oakTsA0-L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-v3-big,TopRight,0,-55_SX278_SY278_PIkin4,BottomRight,1,22_AA300_SH20_OU02_

I will start by saying that I don’t usually read books like this. First off, the author is male and I prefer my romance books soppy and written by a woman. I’m ashamed to say for all this time I have been WRONG. This book was everything I expect of a romance, and I think I enjoyed it more because it was written by a man.

The writing was flawless, it’s what grabbed me first off, just how perfect the writers prose was. It is seamless and sparkling. An absolute joy to read.

It was that that got me through the first twenty-five per cent of the story. I admit I found the story a little hard to get into. Once the main character, Joel Smith, had reached the point where the ‘real’ story started I was hooked and finished the book in two days.

The Mine isn’t just any time travel book. It’s a beautiful, intricately woven tale about a group of friends living in 1940′s America, with just one impostor thrown into the mix. Joel Smith accidentally found himself travelling back in time and hanging out with his Grandma.

Joel is a wonderful character, smart, funny, cocky, and gorgeous in my minds eye. The way he pulled his time travel off was realistic, comical and charming. I’m not ashamed to say I fell in love with him. The rest of the gang were three dimensional, filled with purpose and realistic for the decade.

Of course, Joel falls for one of grannies best mates and the story takes us through their complicated love affair. That’s where the story started in earnest for me, and from that point it never stopped for a moment.

The plot kept me glued until the end, it was like a tug of war. “Will he, won’t he? Will she, won’t she?”. Of course, I won’t spoil the story, but I’m laying the blame where it’s due for the fact that my house looks like a bomb has hit it. I couldn’t put it down until I found out exactly what happened in the end. Heldt, you’re in big trouble! The end left me satisfied with that warm fuzzy feeling, thats all I’ll say on the matter.

The cover is as lovely and intriguing as the book itself. It certainly inspired me to read it.

All that said. I award the lovely read 4 pints of lager and a packet of crisps.

(Thats 4.5 stars to everyone else ;) )

***REVIEW*** Switching Lanes by Renea Porter

Image

The overall story is about the relationship between the two main characters Layne and Renee. The story is told in the first person from both characters points of view, I’m a huge fan of an author that does that. I love first person but I love an insight into what the other character is thinking at the same time.

The cover is beautiful and shows what the story is all about perfectly.

Both characters are struggling with the loss of their friend (Laynes girlfriend), Amber. The two main characters slowly come together though it’s not without its ups and downs.

The plot is very well constructed and is further enriched with a plethora of sub-plots.

The author has been brave enough to tackle a range of psychological and highly emotive issues. She has perfectly executed the struggle of two characters with eating disorders that are brought together in friendship. I feel that Renea Porter has displayed that you can survive an eating disorder by becoming united with others effected and by accessing counselling services that are available to you.

The author also touched upon dealing with child abuse and the after effects, as well as dealing with greif and loss of a loved one.

I connected easily with the characters, though I would have liked a better in depth physical description of Layne, as I struggled to ‘see’ him. Admittedly, I have not read the first book in the series, ‘Driving Lane’.

The flow of the story was okay, though I found it to be a little slow at times. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of stories written in present tense, and I find it very difficult reading. This is just my preference and I’ve tried hard not to allow it to effect the merits that are due to this novel.

I spent the entire novel rooting for Layne and Renee to get it on, all along praying that neither one of them messed up what seemed to me to be true love, and a connection worth fighting for. So, when my dreams came true and they did get it on I wanted the earth to move. My appetite had built up to a frienzy. I wanted to feel them. Unfortunately, all I got was two small sex scenes that were so brief that if I blinked I could have missed them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all about the sex in a romance for me as a reader but I’m all or nothing…smoking hot or fade out and leave it to the readers imagaination. One or the other.

I would highly recommend this read to anyone that loves reading first person, present tense with a great romantic/love storyline.

Bearing all aspects in mind, I award ‘Switching Lanes’ 3.5 stars.

About the author:

I’ve always had my nose inside of a book ever since I can remember. And I thought I’d try my hand at writing, and Ive wrote ever since I was young, never showing anyone what I was writing. Initially I started writing Coming Back to You without intending to publish, but my hubby of 15 years encouraged me to publish it. And I did. I cant imagine never writing. Its in my blood.

My mind is always wondering, plotting and full of ideas. I think my hubs questions my sanity sometimes, because I say my characters are real. They feel real to me.

And I hope my stories make some sort of impart to you readers. I love hearing from you and enjoy talking with you.
When Im not writing or plotting, I can found reading, and spending time with my step son and husband.

***REVIEW*** Nothing Like the First Time by Keren Hughes

Image

I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. As always, that’s what you’re getting!

I opened this book in the hope that I would like it, I wasn’t disappointed, I loved it! The story is about two childhood sweethearts, Grey and Carly. The book is written in first person from Carly’s point of view.

Grey chose a career opportunity as a freelance photographer over the girl he loved. He left town in pursuit of his dreams, leaving Carly broken hearted from her first love, a love she’d never forget. Ten years later Grey shows back up, but everything has changed hasn’t it?

Grey made me hate him, love him, hate, love. Okay, I would have been willing to hide Carly’s body in a shallow grave in the woods and present myself to him as a willing comfort. But I think that’s a whole different book ;). He is steamy hot and it’s certainly easy to see why he’d make a woman go weak at the knees.

Saying that, Carly is a strong minded character that I could easily relate to. She’s a strong woman, with two jobs. One pays the bills, the other is her passion. She has ‘the one that got away’ syndrome for sure. I get her. I get her motives for everything she does and I’m with her all the way. I only mention the body hiding stuff because I want a piece of her boyfriend.

The pair together are explosive. I’m not ashamed to admit that Hughes had me squirming in my seat with every hot sex scene. The passion was so palpable that I felt a little voyeuristic. Her words bounced straight off the page and provided vivid imagery that flooded down to my groin!

The plot is thick and enriched with events that you never saw coming. When the events have smacked you in the face, you’ll be holding your breath until the next one. I couldn’t put it down.

The writing is seamless, it flows beautifully and carries you along on the waves of Grey’s and Carly’s story. I found Hughes’ writing style flawless and a style I could read forever. You are just there, seeing, hearing, smelling and touching everything along with the characters. Isn’t that exactly how a book is meant to be?

The book’s cover is beautiful and compliments the characters perfectly.

I would feverishly recommend this book to any lover of steamy romance. Especially someone that needs a gripping plot to go along with it.

How could I give anything but 5 FANTASTIC glasses of wine!

About the Author

Image

Keren lives in the UK and is an avid bookworm; she has been since she read things like Black Beauty, What Katy Did and The Hobbit as a child. Her first real memories of reading are the summers she used to lie on her bed and re-read What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next.

Over the years she has come to realise that she is a bit OCD about books. They have to be in perfect condition without the slightest bit of damage.

She is a book reviewer and has been for the past 18 months or so.

The idea for Stolen came to her one day but she never thought she’d actually write it let alone publish it. If it wasn’t for her author friend Kira Saito, the idea would still be stuck in her head not on paper. But constant love and support from Kira is why you are now able to read Stolen.

Stolen is her first novel but now that she’s written one, she knows she needs to write more. There will be one sequel, called Freed which will be from Bodhi’s POV. This will be set a couple of years on.

RELEASE DAY – Falling into You by L.T. Kelly 15th of May 2014

Banner - Falling Into You by LT Kelly (1)

Release day of ‘Falling into You’ has finally come. I can honestly say that I hit a rocky road with this book. Well, I’m taking a chance…

falling into you

I was lucky enough not to receive a ‘bad’ review for ‘Falling to Pieces’. “Thank fudge for that,” you can hear me say. By ‘bad’ review I mean someone who down right hated every part of the book, or worse, did not finish it. Those three little letters pierce my heart, I have nightmares about seeing DNF in conjunction with my book. I received some constructive criticism of what they thought was wrong with the story, every author needs that whether they agree with the reviewer is a different story. However, I have respected the thoughts of everyone who took the time to read and review my book. Sure, I think I have a couple of one and two star ratings on Goodreads but there are no words to go with the reviews. So I’m unable to consider what they thought was wrong with it.

Here are some of the reviews from the last blog tour:

‘This is L.T.Kelly’s Debut Novel and I have to say I’m very impressed, very impressed indeed.

It’s a well written book with a storyline I adored and one I read in one sitting.’

- Passionate About Books.

‘Just Wow! It is full of sensuality, Sexuality, mystery, and left you sitting at the edge of your seat. I just could not read this book fast enough. I have not read a paranormal romance that good in God knows how long. The chemistry between Marc and Teagan was off the wall.’

- Fictions Our Addiction.

‘They both have this pull and there chemistry is HOT.  Crazy sex with one another and I am completely smitten with Marc.  He is very Alpha but in a controlled manner.  He has a duty to his family and is very torn with his feelings for Teagan.  Did I mention that they have HOT sex?’

-M’s Sinful Reviews.

‘This book to me should be an over all 60 stars, but the most we can rate a book is 10.  Please go her fan site, blog site and twitter . Contact her find out how you can purchase this book ASAP!!!! Trust me You DON’T. Want. TO. Miss. This. Book.’

-Mousiey Book Reviews

The main thing I enjoyed about this book was that it wasn’t like every other book that features vampires and werewolves. Instead of a young naive woman falling for the new guy who turns out to be a vampire, the main female character is strong and fights for what she wants, for who she wants. The main male character, Marc is another hot book boyfriend, who you will instantly want to read more about after his introduction into the story. This book has a great storyline with likeable characters and well detailed descriptions, L.T Kelly has done an awesome job and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

-AKA The Book Harlot Reviews.

‘Falling into You’ is where I hit a kind of wall with convention and ‘the rules of romance writing’. I’m glad that I stuck to my guns. The story went where it had to go in my mind…but be warned, this story is not your conventional romance.

“Is this erotica?” One beta, M.K. Meredith asked me. My book is not what I would deem to be true erotica, my book doesn’t use the same type of words that I associate with true erotica. It’s more like romantically erotic, plus it does have a plot that is driven by much much more than pure sex alone.

I have taken a scary path of unconventional romance…but if you read the book and you can’t understand why Teagan did all the things she did, I will be surprised. I have written, what I think is a believable story. But, is that because it all happened in my head so many times? I’m not sure, and I’m tender hooks waiting to find out.

On the flip side, although the romance side of the book has left me somewhat exposed as a writer, I think that everyone thats read it hasn’t had a bad word to say about the plot itself. I’ve had nothing but praise and applaud for the twists and turns. “I just never saw that coming!” It’s made me feel so excited about the thrills and revelations that are rich within the story.

I guess what this writer is trying to say is, “If you think you feel uncomfortable as a romance reader with where the story is going, stick with it! I bet you’ll be glad you did!” (I hope.)

I really hope that you enjoy ‘Falling into You’. I *think* this will be the last paranormal work you will see from me. I’ll never say “never” because I always said I’d never write a novel….here I am two and half down, many many more to come…
