Chapter 1

Tina squeezed herself between several parked cars and stepped onto the pavement, jogging the last hundred yards to her home. Hot and out of breath, she blotted her forehead with the edge of her sleeve. The thought of what waited for her behind the front door made her heart race. Her hands trembled as she reached into her pocket for her keys. They slid through her fingers and hit the ground with a loud chink.

Damn it! she thought, and bent down to pick them up.

She rolled her shoulders to ease the tension and slid the key into the lock, promptly letting herself in. Her mouth grew dry as she set one foot on the doormat. There he was, sitting at the bottom of the stairs, a position he assumed when things didn’t go his way.

“You’re late. Where have you been?” Clive asked, his hands locked together, elbows balanced on his knees.

Tina’s face paled as she stared at him. “I’m only a little late. You know I’ve been to see Sam.”

She kicked off her trainers and then remembered to place them neatly with the other shoes in the rack.

Clive’s eyes narrowed as he stared back at her. “You should have left earlier.”

“I got carried away chatting.”

She hung her coat on the hook and leant forward to peck her husband on the lips then stroked his right cheek, hoping that it would ease the hostility between them.

He brushed her hands away and said, “We said eleven o’clock. You will not see her again. Do you hear me?”

“It’s only a few minutes. Why do we have to go through this every time I see her?” she asked. “You know she’s my oldest friend.”

Clive’s lips thinned to a tight line. Her body tensed as the words left her mouth. He stood and approached her, clutching her shoulders and pinning her against the wall.

“You won’t see her again,” he repeated. “Is that clear?”

Tina’s cheeks tingled as Clive’s breath puffed across her face as he spoke She cowered before him, dreading what was to come.

“I–I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to answer back. Please, let me go!”

Clive increased the pressure upon her shoulders, his eyes boring deep into hers. “I’m not making myself clear, am I?”

The scent of sour milk and garlic invaded her nostrils as his breath blew across her cheek. Tina’s spine pressed against the wall as she tried to back away from him to no avail. Clive wrapped his hand around her throat, pushing her jawbone upwards. His grip tightened, restricting her airflow. She slumped against the wall, feeling a little woozy. Spittle oozed from the corners of her lips, dripping onto his shirtsleeve. Incoherent nonsense came from her lips when she tried to speak.

A searing pain invaded her abdomen, causing her to double over. Through watery eyes, she watched as Clive shook his hand and flexed his fingers. The smug look on his face betrayed his enjoyment. A stream of urine slowly trickled down her thighs. Tina clamped her legs together, hoping to shield the wetness that was now seeping into her trousers from her husband’s view.

Her eyesight swam and she soon rolled to the floor. Curled up in the corner, Tina wrapped her arms around her middle. Her nostrils flared as she struggled to breathe, hoping that it would cure the dizziness she now felt.

Clive stared down at her and said, “You will not talk back to me again, bitch. Stop snivelling! I hardly touched you.”

Cowering against the wall, Tina tried to suppress her tears. She knew if she cried that it would fuel his anger.

“S–Sorry. I didn’t mean . . . to . . . answer back.” She paused and looked at him from the corner of her eye. “You’ve really hurt me this time!”

Using the telephone table for balance, she stood on unsteady feet. Clive shook his head in disapproval.

“You’ve pissed yourself. Sort it out. It stinks.” He offered her a hand. “Come on. I’ll make you a tea.”

Tina allowed him to lead her through to the kitchen. He helped her into a chair near the table, and set about in preparing a cup of tea. Her knuckles whitened to the point of hurting as she clenched her fists across her lap. He flipped the switch on the kettle. Neither of them spoke until he placed the cup in front of her.

“Thanks,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.

Her throat felt dry as her gaze landed on the cup. She reached for it, the heat of the porcelain mug warming her palms.

“I’m going to bed.” He smirked. “I want you up by midnight.”

She nodded, afraid of looking up at him. “Yes, Darling. I’ll drink this and have a shower.”

Author Bio:

Keren lives in the UK and is an avid bookworm. She fondly remembers the days where she would lie in her bedroom away from distraction and get lost in the world of make believe. Her first real memory of reading something she fell in love with was The Hobbit. In her teenage years, she became addicted to Point Horror books like RL Stine’s The Boyfriend, but she also enjoyed light Summer reads like What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next.

Over the years she has come to realise that she is a bit of an OCD freak about books. They have to be in perfect condition without the slightest bit of damage.

She has been a book reviewer for the last few years and a book hoarder for a LOT longer. You can NEVER have too many books! Her shelves are bulging and overflowing but she always wants “just one more book”.

Keren had her first book published by Limitless Publishing in November 2013. It’s a YA Paranormal Romance novel called Stolen. Her second book was published with LP in May 2014. This time, an NA Contemporary Romance called Nothing Like The First Time.

She couldn’t have been more surprised when NLTFT appeared on the Amazon Best Seller list. That was a dream come true.

Keren is currently working on more NA Contemporary Romances for you to fall in love with.

Fifty Shades of Shit?

This blog post was originally intended to be my review of Fifty Shades of Grey, the movie. It will be, but after all of the internet savaging from both sides of the fence on the subject matter, I wanted to get my point across.

Unknown

I rushed to my local picture house two days after the movie was released. I wanted to love the movie and everything about it. I think most people were worried it wouldn’t have the right mixture of story and sex.

They were right to be worried, for me there wasn’t enough of both. I was astounded at actually how much nudity there was in the film. Now, I’m all up for nakedness, but I was a little sad at how much story we missed. I think most fans thought there wouldn’t be enough sex…

images

Dornan as Grey was always the wrong choice for me personally, but I’m not sure they would have ever have got it right to suit everyones tastes. FSoG fans are nothing if not precious over who played the part of Mr. Grey whilst they were reading. Dornan has made his personal views on BDSM quite clear in the media, that has spoilt my ideology on who could pull off such a part. I feel he has held back from playing the role to the fullest.

images-1

However, the casting of Ana made the film, she was perfect. My friend pointed out that the film was almost a dark rom-com in places…I couldn’t agree more. We were both a little taken aback that the word vanilla was never used during the movie, when it played such a big part in the book.

In summary, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. The producers have successfully pulled off a rather shocking film adaptation…I think that was probably their goal, they’ve achieved that much. In doing so they’ve skipped out rather a lot of story, a story that I rather enjoyed. I would award it three stars for shock factor at least.

I read the books at the peak of their hype. I was a field marketing manager at the time, and I’d never seen such a phenomena. We, as a company, were contracted to place books on shelves in the correct chart position for a leading UK supermarket, keeping them topped up. During FSoG’s peak phase this was impossible, we were only contracted to do so many hours a day on that task…those hours simply weren’t enough to keep that section of shelf even half full.

images-3

I read all three books within a week, I can’t say I was wowed by the writing, okay not even a little bit impressed. I’d have to agree with the critics and say the language was childish, some sex scenes were unrealistically written, and the dialogue a touch unoriginal and repetitive. I couldn’t stand Christian Grey for the most part of book one, but there was something that kept me hooked. Maybe it was knowing that there was more to the story than met the eye? Perhaps, it was wanting to watch Anastasia catch the uncatchable man? Whatever it was, the author did most of her job by keeping me reading.

There are hoards of people out there that hate FSoG, they will tell you every time you mention it that Christian Grey is in fact a physically and emotionally abusive, rapist. I honestly think that’s subjective. I never got the impression that Ana was being raped or abused. I think if you stepped back and read every smutty book with a strong male character and a weaker woman you could say the same for each one, it’s down to how you view it.

images

To say that FSoG promotes rape and abuse is down right ludicrous. That’s like saying that I promote biting, blood drinking, sleeping around, and murder in my books. Although, I do like a nibble every now and then ;). Or, if you want to go further you could say that any works of fiction containing evil, murder, and violence are promoting the contents therein. What I read when I read FSoG is clearly very different to what others have read. I saw a girl enraptured by a man, a man who most definitely and undeniably a control freak with some different sexual tastes. I didn’t see Ana resist his pursuits, I saw a girl who wanted a man enough to go along with it all in the hope she could change him. Guess what…I see that everyday.

To me, the FSoG series promotes compromise, Ana wants a ‘normal’ relationship, Christian wants a submissive. By the end of it all they both get exactly what they want somewhere in the middle. They are both consenting adults and I’ve seen people do stranger things in the pursuit of love.

images-2

I’m not misguided enough to believe that FSoG portrays a true reflection of a BDSM relationship. But then again, I’m also not misguided enough to believe that there are helicopter flying, twenty something, multi-millionaire CEO’s hanging around the roof tops of Seattle waiting to usher young impressionable women into rooms filled with whips and chains either. Much the same with Ana…looks like that, is a virgin, and never masturbated? Get real.

I think it’s very important to keep things in perspective. I feel like people are losing their shit over this book/film more than needed. I’ve stared domestic violence/abuse in the face, it’s a very emotive and upsetting subject. I didn’t see that within the pages of this book.

I do welcome all comments on this blog, in a structured way. I will not allow petty, nasty behaviour. An opinion and how you arrived at it would be constructive for either side of the argument.

***REVIEW*** Electrify Me by Bibi Rizer

23563115

Blurb

All Gloria Falcon wants is to have a nice New Year’s Eve with a nice man. Is that so much to ask? But after seven disastrous New Years in a row, this year she’s trying something different. Committed to spending her New Year’s Eve manning the phones at a suicide crisis phone line, Gloria is sure the karma she earns will break her New Year’s curse. But when a blackout cancels her night of philanthropy, rather than spend the night moping in the dark, she goes on a ride along with the cute electric company lineman who failed to fix the power.

Charlie Zhang is not much of a New Year believer either. He’s coasting through life after being discharged from the army and trying not to let his cynicism of pretty much everything define him. When Gloria Falcon climbs into Charlie’s life, and his repair truck, neither of them expect this to be the New Year’s Eve that changes their minds, and their fate, forever.

Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast read. The author leads the reader in with Gloria’s woeful New Years Eve history. Gloria has has such bad luck in the past, starting off during her childhood. Understandably so, Gloria is massively superstitious when it comes to this date on the calendar. However, she’s determined this year will be different…

In comes Charlie’s POV. The book is beautifully written in first person narrative, swapping between the two main character’s POV’s with each chapter. The only criticism I have is that their wasn’t enough difference between the two voices, at times I found myself trying to remember who’s POV it was. It’s incredibly difficult to achieve a huge difference in character voices, and to be honest, I found myself thinking it was because these two were made for each other?

As always, Gloria’s New Years Eve plan takes a turn for the worse when there is a power cut at the church she is volunteering at for the night. She figured that taking calls from suicidal people on New Years Eve would rid her of her New Year curse. Enter Charlie, who is on call for a power firm that night. He’s immediately attracted to Gloria and her…erm…tights! The pair are so cute when they are flirting, the author has achieved realism in the way they dance around each other in the attempt to discover if the feelings are mutual.

Then comes the action, there is plenty of it in this novella. My heart skipped a beat when an unexpected turn of events leaves Gloria in danger. Charlie is a good old fashioned night in shining armour.

If you’re looking for a flowery narrative, don’t pick up this book. The author cuts right to the chase in this fast paced novella. It was refreshing to read something punchy, funny, and realistic. I really enjoyed every minute of it. I’m looking forward to reading more of The Fireworks Novella’s.

I award this book 4 thunderbolts.

***REVIEW*** Point of Release by Remy Landon.

23514793

If you scroll down you’ll see that I reviewed Point of Submission, the first in this two part series. I loved the smooth simplicity and flow of Remy’s writing style but I wasn’t wowed by the story line.

This book is where things changed. This story was different to most romance novels I’ve read, and trust me, I’ve read a lot. I know the author will be pleased to know that I loved it.

Her writing style is still amazing, seamless and beautiful. I absolutely couldn’t put this book down…I mean, how very dare my children speak to me!

The pain, feelings of loss, need, and gut wrenching love held me captive from page one through till the last one. My heart ached the whole way through. I begged for Cassandra to give in to Carlo to rid the dull ache in my chest every time my eyes scanned the pages, or in this case my iPhone.

When she introduced Josh, a sexy, calming and gorgeous new work mate my heart screamed ‘No!’, but my head agreed he was probably the safest choice for her. But, meh! Who wants safe when you can have sexy, dangerous, captivating, hotness? Not this girl.

This storyline was different in two ways…firstly she did NOT give in to him. He pursued her in ways that made me long to meet this man, have him break my heart, and my trust in the sexiest of ways and then fight to win me back. This story is focussed on their own personal battles as well as the one between them. They worked through them separately.

Secondly, Carlo was chasing the hell out of Cassandra. It was clear, even to him, that he was doggone in love with her. However, when a woman is all out offering herself to a hot blooded male met with iron resistance from the woman he truly wants he’s gonna’ take it. That for me was beautifully realistic. I love realistic in a book and Landon did not fail to impress. I was also glad because her sex scenes are smokin’.

Also, when the end comes…which unfortunately it did, you won’t feel like it was rushed. You’ll feel satisfied that Carlo and Cassandra are real, they’ll be together forever, because she took her time and felt sure before she gave her heart away.

I’m truly sad that it doesn’t look as though Landon is producing another book in this series. I’d have liked to have seen what came next for the couple. That said, I’m a true Remy Landon fan forever.

I award, a truly deserved 5 stallions to Point of Release.

***New Release*** Second Nature by Marie Lavender.

SecondNature-final cover

Title:  Second Nature, book one of the Blood at First Sight Series

Genre:  Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Second Nature Blurb:

She never expected it…

Desiree Edwards has a problem.  She’s been attacked, kidnapped and forced to get along with a vampire of all things.  It’s something right out of the story books she reads, or her worst nightmare.  But, sometimes he’s not the monster he appears to be.  He seems so humanlike that she can’t help it when her emotions betray her, when her body betrays her.  To make matters worse, she finds out more about herself than she ever wanted to know.

She was unlike any other…

Alec has a problem.  The animal in him wants Desiree.  But, so does the man.  The more he learns about her, the harder it is to deny what he wants.  But, he’s a freak, and she’s just a human.  The two species don’t mix that way.  Then an old enemy surfaces and Alec is forced to make a choice.  His life or hers.

Can Alec’s soul be saved by this unique human?  Or will it be far too late?

Excerpt:

His skin tingled with some kind of sudden anticipation. He heard the hum of blood in her veins. The sweet scent of her arousal returned. His animal instinct woke up, the need for blood overpowered by the need for her. He tamped it down, clenching his jaw. He wasn’t going to violate her while she was unconscious. But how had she become aroused? On some level, he knew she sensed his presence. How was that possible? Was Desiree not only of strong mind but supernatural as well? He had heard of witches, humans that had certain abilities. They kept themselves in hiding too, but he knew they existed. Was she one of them? Could she sense him?

For a brief moment, Alec saw through her eyes. Hazy vision, mild muscle aches, a weird displacement. Ah, hell, he thought. She was waking up, and he’d just had some kind of bizarre connection with her. He doubted she realized it. He would be able to read her mind soon. It was one of his gifts. He didn’t hear every thought from humans, but he caught enough for self-preservation.

He focused on the road ahead, prepared for anything. With her, he should. She was strong, unpredictable. Lovely, too, he thought, his gaze sweeping over her again in the rearview mirror. Her lashes lifted slowly, almost as if she had trouble keeping them open. When they were all the way open, he caught her ice-blue gaze again. Her eyes captivated him and his chest ached. Weird, he thought, shaking off the sensation.

Just focus on getting her there, he told himself. That was the only thing he had to do. He’d worry about the rest later.

 ***

Desiree struggled to awaken. There was a jostling movement, and the sound of an engine. Her body began to tingle all over. She opened her eyes to see that she was lying across the backseat of a car. As her vision cleared fully, she could discern the shape of the driver. Wide shoulders, short black hair. She shivered. Dear God, she was a captive! She should have called the cops right away. At least then someone would guess what had happened to her.

“You’re safe,” a voice rasped.

Her voice was hoarse when she replied, “I don’t believe you.”

“I don’t blame you, but I assure you it’s true.”

The deep rumble of his tone reverberated through her body, lighting fires where they shouldn’t be. She sucked in a breath and tried to sit up, but her wrists and ankles were bound, making her body little more than dead weight. She moaned at the situation she found herself in. She was dressed, she realized. Fully dressed in jeans and a camisole. That was very … enterprising of him.

***REVIEW*** By The Sea by Katherine McIntyre

22439495

Blurb

Most kids had imaginary friends, but most weren’t like Megan’s friend Niall. There were rules: only at night and only by the sea. She could’ve sworn he was real, but when someone vanishes without a trace, what else can you believe?

All that was seven years ago, buried in the past until Niall shows up in town with his tight swimmer’s body and easy smile. For Megan, just the sight of him is enough to tear open a scar that never fully healed. However, their reunion only elicits more questions. Niall’s keeping secrets, unbelievable ones, and as Megan delves into the supernatural depths of who he really is, she’s sure he’ll vanish again.

Megan’s not stupid—she knows how bad it’ll hurt if she gets involved. The first time Niall disappeared, she never thought she’d recover. But the moment they lock eyes, it’s too late—because Megan will go to any length to see that boy smile.

Review

Well, where do I begin? I can honestly say, I’m almost speechless…those of you that know me will know that that is serious business.

McIntyre’s writing style is completely flawless. Reading her work is like floating on the waves of a comforting sea (pun intended).

This story is set in a gorgeous seaside town. Poor Meagan has suffered years of therapy having clung onto an ‘imaginary’ friend well past it’s ‘sell by date’. Her family and therapist managed to convince her that she had imagined a whole person, dreamed him up until *poof* he was gone. With no proof he ever existed she had no choice but to believe he’d been nothing but a figment of her imagination.

That’s until he shows up in town seven years later, going by a different name, but she recognises him anyway and finally get’s some guts from somewhere to confront him. When he gave her his explanation of why he’d disappeared I kind of reared by head back… He’s a what?. But I have to tell you it worked. It worked because it was refreshingly different.

Anyway, Niall has lost something precious, something he really needs back. Meagan agrees to help him find it even though she’s filled with despair, knowing he’ll disappear from her life once more as soon as the object if found.

This novella is beautifully written, filled with angst, and possesses a unique story line. It’s written in first person, which I tend to enjoy. I connected with the two main characters and easily gauged exactly what Niall was thinking and feeling despite the story being in the first person. The story was captivating, funny, sweet and unputdownable.

Well done to the Author! This is the easiest five stars (or five shells in this case) I’ve ever given to a book…

The Falling Series for $0.99/£0.99 this weekend ONLY + Giveaway.

I’m running this promotion at (almost) the end of a hectic and successful year, both for me personally and as a writer.

At the beginning of this year I embarked on a new role within the ambulance service, I’m so proud of what I do. In March I was offered a full time contract. It was a bit of a body and culture shock going from twelve hours a week to twelve hours a days at least three times a week! I’m proud that I still managed to release Falling into you in May as well.

In August my husband retired from a military career spanning twenty-eight years. With that came the hugest of up-heavals. In September we bought and moved into our own house whist negotiating  my husband starting a new job and both of my children starting school, my daughter who is four years old, for the first time.

I’ve almost finished my new contemporary romance, Kissing Cassie. I’m excited with what 2015 may hold for me, and where I’ll be this time next year!

Without further ado…

frontpaperback

When Teagan Lewis moves from rural Montana to the bright lights of London with her maker Thomas, she expects to live as harmoniously as she has for the last one hundred-fifty years.

Teagan didn’t know she had a heart or soul until she met Marc Romano.

However, it quickly becomes clear that Marc is forbidden fruit. All the signs that he isn’t human were there from the beginning, but she chose to ignore them…to her peril.

Can she simply walk away from this mesmirising stranger? Or should she risk her immortality to be with the man she has fallen in love with?

Review excerpts:

From the very first page, I knew I was going to love Falling to Pieces. Paranormal romances are a comfort zone for me, and it felt really good to return to them with this amazing book. L.T. Kelly was a master at getting my attention and keeping it throughout the entire book. I was really in awe that this was her debut novel. It doesn’t read that way. It reads like a seasoned writer wrote this. -Pretty Little Pages.

I try to steer away from vampire books, but this one is more about Teagan and her life. I didn’t want the book to end! I loved how smoothly the read of this book was, I fell in love and even loved to hate some of the characters. -Chrissy

This book was definitely different from most of the vampire books that I have read. It has it all, the drama between two species of creatures, different kinds of rules, great chemistry and romance, and a not so ordinary love triangle. Did I say a great romance that is just HOT? -Hines and Bingham Literary Tryst.

Marc Romano disappeared without a trace into the darkness. His lover became overwhelmed with grief in her loss. But her grief takes on a much more murderous form than most, for Teagan Lewis is a vampire.

Now her heartache is driving her further from the woman she once was, and she realises she must snap out of her monstrous habits and discover the way back to her old self. But how?

Ending their trip around Europe, Teagan and her friend Alex head back to New York. Teagan has the full intention of carrying out a dangerous plan here; not just physically dangerous, but emotionally as well.

How will she be able to resist the irresistible? And what of the new rival, Ivan Lenin? He threatens her life and the lives of everyone she loves. The only people who can help her are her sworn enemy and an ancient stranger. Will they assist her?

How will Teagan Lewis face the demons of her past and try to find happiness? Will she stay and fight or will she run from the things she must face in order to finally be at peace? Mistakes will be made. People will die. The time has come…

Review Excerpts:

I loved her character, I loved that her life was so messed up, she was happy, sad, confused, devastated, torn and lost. She was as real to me, not like other vampires you read in other books who have the strength to overcome all obstacles, and the seemingly perfect life. Teagan struggled with her past and her unknown future. Her search for her “one true love” Marc and her Maker Thomas, leads her to find the peace she has always longed for and a love that shows her that her guilt need not consume her. – Daisy

You can tell that L.T Kelly wrote this book from her heart. She created some beautiful, astounding characters that have left footprints on my heart. The story flows beautifully and with the sneaky little twists and turns, you will never know what’s coming until the wind is knocked out of your sail. – Gothic Angel Book Reviews

“Falling into You” surprises at every turn. Right when you think you know what comes next, you’re taken down an unexpected, but highly satisfying path. Kelly weaves a tale of heartbreak and triumph, loss and discovery with sexy heroes and a kick ass heroine. Each encounter will leave you panting for more. A lesson in flexibility, this story shows that not all is what it appears to be, and sometimes the most unexpected answers are the answers to your dreams. Don’t hide behind your expectations but rather open them to the world.- M.K. Meredith

An opportunity to save one persons faith.

Well, that one persons faith happens to be mine. If I’m honest, I’ve sort of lost it. I always try to help people out. I know some of you will roll your eyes and think that you’ve been waiting at least a century for me to read and review your book. That’s because I’m a do gooding beta reader, as well as working full time and being a wife and mother! I’m getting to you, I swear! :)

So, what I’ve come here today to ask is that if there are any bloggers out there that would be willing to post a promo post on Friday or Saturday this week please shoot me a message via the contact me section, or at my Facebook page.

Also, if there are any authors that can spare an e-book contribution or anything else for the giveaway I’d be eternally grateful. Of course, I can offer you FB page likes, or twitter followings in exchange for your kind and gratefully excepted offering. I find giveaways often offer great exposure to your work as well!

Any authors and/or bloggers willing and able please get in touch!
