You couldn't make it up

I love collecting examples of unintended witticisms- it's the kind of thing that's extremely hard to make up.
A few hours ago, Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers said that controversial striker Luis Suarez was 'chomping at the bit' to be back after a 10-match ban. His crime? Biting a Chelsea defender.

Gagfest UK

Just watched a feature on BBC World from their Culture Show on the rise of female comedians.
Gagfest opens with a struggling female stand-up performing a routine at Edinburgh. Someone asked me why I didn't make the book more aspirational in the sense that there are more female comics these days and they are increasingly widely accepted and successful.
This is true for the lucky few but it is still the case that women find it very hard to break into comedy and I purposely wanted to focus on someone who wasn't a head-liner yet. The business of comedy in the UK is huge but it's still very hard to get noticed.
However, there was a female winner this year at Edinburgh- how 'zeitgeisty' is that!

Gagfest UK

Are women funnier than men?
What is the point of heckling?
Are pranks just harmless fun?

These & other meatier questions run through Gagfest UK, my new dark comedy, available now on Kindle and most other major outlets, via Smashwords:

The Pixelloverse

If I'm writing really short blog posts and using Facebook primarily to update readers about what I'm writing, then basically,
blog = Twitter
Facebook = website
Even though I've tried to avoid the virtual world, I've ended up using it anyway.
No offence to people using Twitter but I'm still with Sean Lock on this when he described the vast majority of Tweets as reading like people's brains leaking.

Whatever happened to Moonlighting?

Is it just me, or is there a growing convergence between Republican John McCain and John McClane (as played by Hollywood star Bruce Willis)?
One is a balding, right-wing, supporter of the military and the other...oh yeah.

Britain AD 60

Deep in research for a new series at the moment. Trying to find out all kinds of things about Britain during the early years of the Roman occupation- not as straightforward as it might seem. Particularly weird is what animals and plants there were or weren't at the time- creatures you take for granted like cats or rabbits were introduced by the occupying Romans. It may not sound like the stuff of comedy but you just wait. Keith Ramsbottom: Rebel Leader should appear in late October/November- the first in a series of six.

Long Walk to Freedom

Looking forward to the movie adaptation of Long Walk to Freedom, (even though I think Morgan Freeman should have passed on Invictus & waited for this gig).

It made me wonder if when Mandela actually dies, whether after so many near-misses, people won't believe it & demand to see proof- a bit like with Gaddaffi & Hussein. Don't wish any ill-will on Mandela- it's just how my mind works.

It's my birthday

Tis true. I am officially 150 years old- well, that's what my doctor said recently after scanning my liver.

For a blog tour I did for Live Long & Prospero, I wrote a piece about music I really liked, including a number of artists/bands from 30 years ago, which are still playing (sometimes better than ever- especially John Foxx & Gary Numan).
One name I missed but I've been listening to virtually non-stop in the last few weeks is Visage. Their last album was 29 years ago!!!!!! Hearts & Knives is an absolute revelation- old synths, great songs & Steve's voice still just about there. It's unbelievable and like stepping into a time machine.
Give yourself a treat, whether it's your birthday or not, & check it out.

A new dawn- Gagfest

Hi Pixellites,

I've crawled out of my self-imposed exile & decided to lose my blogging virginity. Eight million Americans can't be wrong (or can they?).

Big news: Gagfest UK, my latest dark comedy is now available on Kindle.
