To Overcome Temptation, Change Your Focus
“We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ."
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NCV)
Here’s the secret to temptation: Don’t fight it. Just refocus.
Whatever you resist persists. Did you know that, in the Bible, not once are you told to resist temptation? You are told to resist the Devil, but that’s a whole different issue. The key to overcoming temptation is not to push back. It’s to change your focus.
Whatever gets your attention gets you. The battle for sin always starts in the mind. That’s why the Bible says in Psalm 119:6, “Thinking about your commands will keep me from doing some foolish thing” (CEV). Why? Because if you’re thinking about God’s truth, you’re not thinking about less important things.
It’s true in every single area of life—good or bad. If you focus on godly things, they’ll pull you in a godly direction. If you focus on the stuff you see on television and on social media, they’ll pull you in another direction. Whatever you focus on gets your attention. Whatever gets your attention is going to get you.
The key is to change your mind.
Temptation always follows a predictable pattern: attention, arousal, and action. Your mind gets hooked, your feelings kick in, and then you act on it.
So don’t fight a temptation; just turn your mind to something else.
The Bible says it like this: “We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NCV). The thing is, most people aren’t very good at capturing every thought and turning it to Christ—because it takes lots of practice. You can’t always control your circumstances, and you often can’t control the way you feel.
But you can control what you think about. That’s always your choice. And if you change the way you think, it changes the way you feel, and that will change the way you act.
Stop fighting temptation today. Instead, change your mind—and that will change your life!

Dios Desea que Obedezcas Completamente
“Tú has ordenado que tus mandamientos se cumplan al pie de la letra”. Salmo 119:4 (TLA)
Dios desea que lo obedezcas. Eso es una verdad bastante básica en la que probablemente estarás de acuerdo.
¿Pero sabías que Dios tiene maneras específicas en las que desea que le obedezcas? Una de esas es que Él desea que tú le obedezcas completamente.
Dios no desea que tu escojas y selecciones cuales instrucciones vas a seguir. Él desea que seas totalmente obediente.
Salmo 119:4 dice, “Tú has ordenado que tus mandamientos se cumplan al pie de la letra” (TLA).
Para obedecer a Dios completamente, debes entender dos verdades.
Primero, los estándares de Dios para lo que es bueno y malo nunca han cambiado, y nunca cambiarán. La cultura cambia. La opinión popular cambia. Pero la verdad no cambia. Si algo estaba mal 10,000 años atrás, todavía está mal hoy; si estaba bien en aquel entonces, está bien ahora. La verdad es eterna.
Segundo, Dios tiene una perspectiva más grande que la tuya. Él ve cosas que tú no puedes ver.
Cuando tratas de mirar desde la perspectiva de Dios, eso es como si una hormiga tratara de mirar desde tu perspectiva. Simplemente no va a suceder. No eres capaz de mirar como Dios mira. Así que necesitas confiar en Él.
Santiago 4:11 dice, “En cambio, les corresponde obedecer la ley, no hacer la función de jueces” (NTV).
La tentación más vieja de la humanidad es dudar de la Palabra de Dios. Cuando Satanás vino a Eva en el Jardín del Edén, él dijo, “¿De veras Dios les dijo que no deben comer del fruto de los árboles del huerto?” Génesis 3:1 (NTV).
Cuando eres tentado, Satanás está tratando de dañarte de la misma manera.
Te encuentras pensando, “Yo sé que la Biblia dice que no haga esto, pero ¿en realidad esto es para mí?”.
O quizás te preguntes a ti mismo, “¿En realidad Dios dijo eso?”
Así como lo hizo con Eva, Satanás te tentará para que dudes de la Palabra de Dios.
Y cuando estés tentado a dudar, recuerda estas dos verdades: la verdad de Dios nunca cambia, y la perspectiva de Dios es más grande que la tuya. Tú solo necesitas confiar y obedecer.

When You’re Tempted, God Wants to Help
“Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."
Psalm 50:15 (NIV)
Do you ever feel alone when you’re struggling with temptation? You’re not! The Bible says God is ready to help.
In the Bible, Jesus gives you a prayer of deliverance to use when you’re tempted. He tells you to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13 ESV).
We often shorten that prayer to just one word: Help!
Prayers don’t have to start with fancy words like “our gracious heavenly Father.” When you need deliverance from temptation, you can get right to the point: “Help! Keep my eyes straight” or “Help! I don’t like the way my relative treats me, and I’m going to see her today” or “Help! Everything in me just wants to get back at him!”
The Bible is full of people who prayed for deliverance—like David, Daniel, Esther, Peter, and Paul. God was there to help them, and he’ll help you too. In fact, God hears and helps everyone who asks.
You may wonder, “Why can I expect God to help me when I pray the prayer of deliverance?” Because God has promised to help.
The Bible says, “Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me” (Psalm 50:15 NIV). God doesn’t say you must have a long conversation with him. You can just say, “Help, God! I’m facing something now that willpower won’t get me through.”
He knows everything that’s going on in your life, and he’s sympathetic to your situation. He knows how irritating some people are to you; he knows about the things that tempt you.
The Bible says it very clearly: “[Jesus] understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most” (Hebrews 4:15-16 NLT).
Notice that the Bible says, “[Jesus] understands.” Why is Jesus sympathetic? Because he faced the same temptations that you face.
You may be thinking, “Wait a minute. Are you saying Jesus was tempted to get angry?” Yes, I am. “You’re telling me Jesus was tempted to have self-pity?” Yes. The Bible says he was tempted in all the ways you are, yet he did not sin.
Because Jesus was tempted but didn’t sin, he’s just who you need to help you overcome your own temptations. In fact, he wants to help you.
When you’re tempted, God isn’t angry with you. He’s not going to scold you. On the contrary, he wants you to come boldly to him! He says, “I’m here to help.”

Cuando Dios Instruya, Obedece Inmediatamente
“Me apresuro a cumplir tus mandamientos”. Salmo 119:32 (DHH)
La Biblia dice mucho sobre la obediencia. Dios desea que obedezcas para poder bendecirte. Sus instrucciones son para tu bien.
Pero Él también te dice cómo desea que le obedezcas. Una de las cosas más importantes que aprendes sobre la obediencia en la Biblia es que debes obedecer a Dios inmediatamente.
Salmo 119:32 dice, “Me apresuro a cumplir tus mandamientos” (DHH).
Más Adelante, ese mismo Salmo da el mismo mensaje de una manera diferente: “Me he dado prisa, no he tardado en poner en práctica tus mandamientos” Salmo 119:60 (DHH).
Cuando Dios te dice que hagas algo, no lo retrases. No pongas excusas. No arrastres los pies. Solo hazlo. Hazlo ahora.
Quizás te preguntes, “¿y si no entiendo por qué Dios me está pidiendo que haga una cosa en particular?”.
Tú no tienes que entender algo para beneficiarte de eso. Yo no entiendo cómo los pesados aviones vuelan por el aire, pero viajo en ellos. Yo no entiendo cómo funcionan las computadoras, pero envío y recibo correos electrónicos.
No tienes que entender los mandatos de Dios para obedecerlos y beneficiarte de ellos.
Los niños usualmente preguntan por qué tiene que obedecer. Y los padres frecuentemente dicen, “Porque yo lo digo”.
Lo que los padres quieren decir es esto: “Hoy tú no eres lo suficientemente maduro para entenderlo, pero confía en mi —yo sé lo que es mejor. Y necesito que hagas esto por tu propio bien”.
Como un niño, a veces estás tentado a preguntarle a Dios, “¿Por qué necesito hacer eso?”.
Y como un padre amoroso, quizás Él te quiera decir, “Porque yo lo dije. Yo sé más que tú. Un día lo entenderás, pero hoy no lo entiendes. Y necesito que lo hagas, por tu propio bien”.
¿Qué tal si no puedes obedecer a Dios con una buena actitud? ¿Deberías obedecerlo de todas maneras? Absolutamente. Eso es mucho mejor que la desobediencia. Las personas maduras hacen lo correcto independientemente de sus sentimientos.
Aquí está un principio: En la Biblia, cada vez que Dios declara un mandato sin una fecha específica, Él desea que lo hagas ahora.
Cuando nuestros hijos estaban creciendo, mi esposa Kay nos podía decir: “vengan a la mesa a cenar a las 6 pm”, en ese caso, ella quería decir que debíamos ir a la mesa a cenar a esa hora. Pero en otras ocasiones solo decía, “vengan a la mesa del comedor”, eso significaba que debíamos ir inmediatamente.
Es lo mismo con Dios. Si Él te dice que hagas algo sin un periodo de tiempo específico, Él quiere decir que lo debes hacer ahora.
Cuando aplazamos la obediencia, estamos cuestionando a Dios. Le estamos preguntando, ¿Dios en realidad tú sabes lo que es mejor?”
Considera esta pregunta: ¿Qué tal si Dios respondiera a tus necesidades a la misma velocidad con la que le obedeces? Cuando te metes en problemas, deseas la ayuda de Dios inmediatamente. Cuando Dios te dice que hagas algo, Él desea que lo obedezcas inmediatamente.
Obediencia aplazada es desobediencia. Si deseas las bendiciones de Dios, sigue sus instrucciones rápidamente.

The Cross Frees You to Forgive
“We know that our old life died with Christ on the cross so that our sinful selves would have no power over us."
Romans 6:6 (NCV)
Jesus broke the power of sin on the cross. Romans 6:6 says, “We know that our old life died with Christ on the cross so that our sinful selves would have no power over us” (NCV). This is great news, especially because our natural inclination is to do the wrong thing.
It’s our natural, human inclination to hurt others when they hurt us. If someone says something bad about you, you want to say something bad about them. We tend to hold on to hurts and struggle to forgive.
But you can break that bondage to bitterness, guilt, resentment, and worry. You can avoid becoming a slave to the past and to hurtful memories. You can choose to forgive.
What hurt are you hanging on to? Let me ask you a very important question about that hurt: How badly do you want to be healed of it? Do you want to let it go? Maybe you’ve gone over it a thousand times in your mind—what your parents did, what your sibling did, what your spouse did. Every time you think about it, it still hurts.
The cross has the power to free you from grudges, grief, and resentment. There’s nothing outside of the cross that will empower you to let go of the emotions that are weighing you down. On the cross, Jesus broke the power of sin, death, and bondage in your life.
I want you to think of the person you need to forgive—the person whose offense planted a seed of bitterness in you—and I want you to pray this prayer right now:
“Father, only you understand how much I’ve been hurt by this person. I don’t want to carry the pain for another second. I don’t want to be a bitter person. But I need your grace and the power of the cross to release my hurt and to forgive those who’ve hurt me. This is the turning point.
“First, I need to experience your forgiveness. You know all the ways I’ve hurt others, and I’m so sorry for my sins. Jesus, thank you for dying for me. I accept your grace and forgiveness, and I need it daily.
“Today I’m turning to you, and I’m choosing to forgive like you’ve forgiven me. Every time the memory comes back, I’ll forgive that person again until the pain is gone. Heal my heart with your grace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

La Obediencia es la Llave que Desata las Bendiciones de Dios
“Manténganse en el camino que el SEÑOR su Dios les ordenó que siguieran. Entonces tendrán una vida larga y les irá bien”. Deuteronomio 5:33 (NTV)
¿Alguna vez has pensado en la conexión entre la fe y la obediencia? Cuando tú confías en alguien, haces lo que ellos dicen. Si no haces lo que otra persona te dice que hagas, significa que tú no confías en ellos.
En la Biblia, Dios conecta la fe y la obediencia una y otra vez. Las promesas de Dios están condicionadas a que sigas las instrucciones que Él te da.
Deuteronomio 5:33 dice, “Manténganse en el camino que el SEÑOR su Dios les ordenó que siguieran. Entonces tendrán una vida larga y les irá bien” (NTV).
Dios ha hecho increíbles promesas en su Palabra sobre la obediencia. De hecho, hay tantas promesas que no puedo enumerarlas todas aquí. Pero aquí hay algunas:
“El que hace caso a la palabra prospera” Proverbios 16:20 (NBV).
“Mi escudo está en Dios, que salva a los rectos de corazón” Salmo 7:10 (RVR1960).
“Pero el SEÑOR vela por los que le temen” Salmo 33:18 (NTV).
“Día tras día el SEÑOR cuida de los justos” Salmo 37:18 (NBV).
“Y cualquier cosa que le pidamos la recibiremos, porque obedecemos sus mandamientos y hacemos lo que le agrada” 1 Juan 3:22 (NBV).
“Feliz el hombre que honra siempre al Señor” Proverbios 28:14 (DHH).
“El que cumple los mandamientos conserva su vida” Proverbios 19:16 (NBV).
“Pues los que le temen tendrán todo lo que necesitan… Los que confían en el SEÑOR no les faltará ningún bien” Salmo 34:9-10 (NTV).
Es una lista increíble de promesas. Si tú sigues las direcciones de Dios, serás bendecido, salvado, velado, cuidado, tendrás lo que pides, y serás feliz; vivirás más tiempo y no te faltará nada.
Obediencia es la premisa detrás de todas las promesas. Dios te da sus promesas por gracia. Pero tú puedes disfrutar de sus promesas cuando sigues sus instrucciones.
Algunas veces comprendes las instrucciones de Dios. Pero otras veces no. Y tú necesitas obedecer ya sea que entiendas o que no entiendas.
Algunos de los mandatos de Dios pueden sonar confusos. Algunos pueden parecer injustos. Por ejemplo, la Biblia dice que tomes primero el 10 por ciento de tu ingreso y se lo devuelvas a Él. Dice que cuando las personas te hagan mal, les debes devolver con bien. Estas cosas no siempre hacen sentido desde el punto de vista humano. Pero las cosas que no nos hacen sentido a nosotros son aquellas cosas que Dios nos pide que hagamos por fe. Él desea que confiemos en Él y le obedezcamos siempre.
Yo deseo que disfrutes de todas las promesas de Dios. La obediencia es la llave que las desata. Escoge seguir sus direcciones hoy en fe. Él promete recompensarte por tu obediencia.

Choose Grace, Not Bitterness
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many."
Hebrews 12:15 (NIV)
If you’re still holding on to resentment, then someone is controlling you.
Have you ever said, “You make me so mad”? That’s an admission that the other person is controlling you. The only way to get this person out of your mind and heart is to heal the hurt with God’s grace.
Hebrews 12:15 says, “See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (NIV).
Have you ever known a family where a bitter parent poisoned the whole family? Bitterness is contagious, and it can actually become generational. Someone needs to break the chain—and if bitterness has taken root in your family, that someone can be you.
Are your parents bitter because their parents were bitter because their parents were bitter? It’s time to break the chain. And there’s only one way to break it: with grace.
Friends, if you don’t get God’s grace in your life, life will make you bitter. Why? Because there is sin in the world. We live on a broken planet. This is not heaven. Evil people get away with evil things all the time. Life is not fair.
Is forgiveness fair? Absolutely not.
But forgiveness is not about fairness. It’s not about getting even. It’s about grace.
You don’t forgive a person because it’s the fair thing to do. You forgive a person because it’s the right thing to do, and you don’t want your own heart full of poison. You don’t want to hold on to the hurt and the hate.
Forgiveness is free, but it is not cheap. It cost Jesus his life. It cost God his Son.
As Jesus was dying on the cross, with his arms outstretched, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34 NIV). It’s like he was saying, “I love you, I love you, I love you.” In effect, he said, “They don’t deserve it. They don’t even know what they’re doing. But, Father, forgive them anyway.”
Follow Jesus’ example and offer forgiveness today. Heal your bitterness with his grace.

Jesús Ofrece Esperanza en las Malas Decisiones
“Si clamas por inteligencia y discernimiento… entonces comprenderás lo que es honrar al SEÑOR y encontrarás el conocimiento de Dios… Entonces comprenderás lo que es recto y justo, y sabrás tomar la decisión correcta cada vez que lo necesites”. Proverbios 2:3-5, 9 (NBV)
Por los últimos días has visto seis diferentes exámenes que puedes usar cuando estés tomando decisiones. Hoy los tengo aquí todos juntos en una lista. Mientras lees los exámenes de nuevo, reflexiona en tus propios hábitos para tomar decisiones. Y luego lee lo que Jesús quizás quiere decirte sobre las decisiones que has tomado en el pasado.
Examen de lo Ideal: ¿Está esto en armonía con la Palabra de Dios?
Para muchas decisiones, la Biblia ofrece instrucciones o un principio claro a seguir. Cuando tú estás tomando decisiones, considera si la Palabra de Dios habla directamente sobre lo que debes hacer.
Examen de la Integridad: ¿Me gustaría que todos sepan sobre esta decisión que estoy tomando?
Cuando eres una persona de integridad, quién eres en el interior coincide con quién eres en el exterior. Quién eres en privado es igual a quién eres cuando estás en público.
Examen de la Optimización: ¿Esto me hará una mejor persona?
En tu vida, a menudo no estarás escogiendo entre el bien y el mal, pero si entre lo bueno y lo mejor. Mantén un estándar alto y llena tu vida con lo mejor.
Examen de la Independencia: ¿Esto puede comenzar a controlar y dominar mi vida?
Aun cuando algo no es malo a primera vista, es malo para ti, si se convierte en una adicción. Cristo es el único que merece el control de tu vida.
Examen de la Influencia: ¿Esto dañará a otras personas?
Nuestra cultura pregunta: ¿Qué tú necesitas? Pero Dios demanda que pienses en otras personas también. Si una decisión que tomas dañará a otras personas, es la decisión incorrecta.
Examen de la Inversión: ¿Es esta la mejor forma de usar mi tiempo?
Tú no tienes tiempo para todo, y Dios no espera que hagas todo. Descifra la misión que Dios tiene para ti. Invierte tu tiempo en eso.
Mientras lees a través de esta lista, quizás estés atormentado por las malas decisiones que has tomado. Quizás estés sintiendo vergüenza, culpa, arrepentimiento, o remordimiento. Quizás le fuiste infiel a tu esposo o esposa. Tal vez mentiste para protegerte a ti mismo. Tú quizás has hecho algo tan malo que nunca le has dicho a nadie lo que has hecho.
Esto es lo que yo pienso que Jesús quisiera decirte hoy:
“No me importa cuales decisiones equivocadas has tomado. Tú me importas. Tú eres valioso y valiosa para mí. Yo te amo. Yo te perdonaré. Yo puedo restaurarte. Yo incluso puedo revertir algunos daños que has traído a tu vida y la vida de otras personas. Yo te daré la bienvenida de regreso con brazos abiertos. Yo morí por esas malas decisiones que has tomado. Ya fueron pagadas en la cruz. Ven a mí y entrégame todas las piezas de tu vida: las partes buenas, las partes feas, las partes que te avergüenzan. Yo tomaré tus pedazos y te daré de mi paz. Algunas de tus decisiones pasadas han causado cicatrices y vergüenza. Yo te daré el poder y sabiduría para comenzar a tomar decisiones inteligentes que te guiarán al gozo y hacia una vida significativa”.

You Can Forgive Before You Trust
“Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. ‘I'll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I'll take care of it.'"

What’s keeping you from forgiving someone who’s hurt you? If you’ve been hurt deeply, you may hesitate to forgive because you’re not ready to trust that person again. Here’s something you need to understand: Forgiveness and trust do not necessarily go hand in hand.
Forgiveness does not mean there needs to be an instant restoration of trust. Forgiveness is instant; trust must be rebuilt over time. Forgiveness is based on grace; trust is built on works. You earn trust; you don’t earn forgiveness.
Many people don’t want to forgive others because they think they’d have to trust them again. But that’s not true. Trust and forgiveness are two different issues! Let me say it again: Forgiving someone does not mean you have to trust that person. They still must earn your trust.
In relationships where people struggle with addictions or abuse, forgiveness is still possible. But it doesn’t always mean things can go back to the way they were.
Forgiveness and the restoration of a relationship are two different things.
Forgiveness is only your part. It doesn’t depend on whether the other person asks for your forgiveness, responds to your forgiveness, or recognizes they need your forgiveness. You forgive for your sake.
Restoration of a relationship takes far more than forgiveness. It takes repentance. It takes restitution and a rebuilding of trust. And it often takes time.
Are you stuck in unforgiveness? Begin the process of forgiveness today. Then take all the time you need to rebuild trust.
