How to Develop a Life Plan

“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Proverbs 16:9 (NLT)

When you make your life plan, God’s contribution toward its success is far greater than your own—but your contribution is still vital. In the Old Testament, Nehemiah offers a good example of someone who knew that his plan depended on God.

When Nehemiah was cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, he heard his hometown of Jerusalem had been destroyed and lay defenseless. This troubled Nehemiah, so he decided to go home to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls. But he knew he wouldn’t get very far without a plan.

The Bible says, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps” (Proverbs 16:9 (NLT).

Nehemiah’s plan for how he would get to Jerusalem gives you sevens steps in developing a life plan. Here are the first two:

Step 1: Ask God for favor on your life.

Nehemiah knew he couldn’t just impulsively suggest that the king let him go home to rebuild. So he prayed, asking for God’s favor: “O Lord, please hear my prayer! . . . Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me” (Nehemiah 1:11 NLT).

God’s favor is God’s grace, and you need it to make and fulfill your plans. Notice Nehemiah also prayed, “Please grant me success.” Sometimes you might think you shouldn’t ask God for success. But there’s nothing wrong with praying for success when you’re trusting God to do the work.

Step 2: Prepare for an opportunity, and then wait.

Nehemiah had to wait before he was given an opportunity to present his plan to the king. Then one day, “four months later, when Emperor Artaxerxes was dining, [Nehemiah] took the wine to him” (Nehemiah 2:1 GNT). Because Nehemiah had plenty of time to prepare, he knew exactly what he wanted to say to the king.

When you begin praying about a plan, vision, or dream God has given you, he usually doesn’t answer right away. God often waits to see how serious you are about it. Are you going to keep praying and planning while you wait? If so, you’ll be prepared to open the door when opportunity knocks.

Tomorrow we’ll look at three more steps Nehemiah took in developing his plan, all steps that you can use as you make a life plan.

Mantén tus Bendiciones con la mano Abierta

“La verdadera sumisión a Dios es una gran riqueza en sí misma cuando uno está contento con lo que tiene. Después de todo, no trajimos nada cuando vinimos a este mundo ni tampoco podremos llevarnos nada cuando lo dejemos”. 1 Timoteo 6:6-7 (NTV)

Dios está más interesado en tu carácter que en tu comodidad. Él no te dará cosas si no has aprendido el principio del contentamiento primero.

El contentamiento no es una falta de ambición. No es una falta de objetivos. El contentamiento significa que tu felicidad no depende de tus circunstancias.

¿Cómo eliminas el descontento? Eliminas la causa: comparar. Comparamos todo: jardines, automóviles, esposos y esposas, ropa, la educación de nuestros hijos (incluso ponemos “Mi hijo fue el estudiante del mes” en la parte de atrás de los automóviles).

Cada vez que comparas, te vas a sentir descontento. Tienes que aprender a dejar de compararte con los demás.

Pablo dice en Filipenses 4:12: “Sé lo que es vivir en la pobreza, y lo que es vivir en la abundancia. He aprendido a vivir en todas y cada una de las circunstancias” (NVI). La satisfacción no viene naturalmente; es algo que tenemos que aprender. Si hacemos esto, Dios promete satisfacer todas nuestras necesidades financieras.

La Biblia dice, “La verdadera sumisión a Dios es una gran riqueza en sí misma cuando uno está contento con lo que tiene. Después de todo, no trajimos nada cuando vinimos a este mundo ni tampoco podremos llevarnos nada cuando lo dejemos” 1 Timoteo 6:6-7 (NTV).

Uno de los mayores secretos para aprender a estar contento es darse cuenta de que realmente no tienes nada. ¡Todo está prestado por algunas décadas! No trajiste una sola cosa a este mundo, y tampoco vas a sacar nada de eso. Solo puedes usarlo mientras estás aquí en la tierra.

La Biblia llama a esto mayordomía. Eres el administrador o el responsable de lo que Dios te permite tener mientras estás aquí, pero en realidad no es tuyo. Cuando entiendes que solo eres un administrador de las bendiciones que Dios permite en tu vida y las sostienes con la mano abierta, no estarás nervioso de perderlas.

¿Y qué si pierdes cosas? Dios puede cerrar una llave y abrir otra con la misma facilidad. Aprende a estar contento porque las cosas no duran. Dios está más interesado en tu carácter que en tu comodidad.

Planning Helps You Live With Purpose

“Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.”

Proverbs 4:26 (NLT)

God has a plan for your life—but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make plans too. He doesn’t want you to drift along, letting circumstances determine the direction of your life. He wants you to be intentional about the path you choose.

Although the Bible gives many reasons for planning, here are three reasons that are foundational.

God makes plans.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (NIV).

God wants you to be like him. So, if God makes plans, then you should make plans too.

But there’s one thing God is not: “God is not a God of disorder” (1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV). Do you have any plans for the rest of the year? The next 10 years? If you haven’t made any plans for your life, then it’s likely your life is out of order—and that’s not how God created you to live.

God expects you to plan because it is beneficial to your life.

Throughout Scripture, particularly in the book of Proverbs, the Bible talks about the value of planning your life. Proverbs 4:26 says, “Mark out a straight path for your feet” (NLT). That’s just another way of saying, “Make a plan.”

God tells you to plan because he doesn’t want you to live a life of confusion as you muddle through each day. The Bible says, “Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way” (1 Corinthians 14:40 NIV).

God doesn’t want you to waste your life.

Planning is a matter of stewardship. Your life is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God. Ephesians 5:15-17 says, “Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, not as [those] who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days. Don’t be vague but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of God” (PHILLIPS).

The old cliché is true: If you’re failing to plan, you’re planning to fail.

Take steps today toward building a better future by writing down a simple plan. Then ask God for help every day to move forward in faith.

Confía en Dios, no en tu Cuenta Bancaria

“A los ricos de este mundo, mándales que no sean arrogantes ni pongan su esperanza en las riquezas, que son tan inseguras, sino en Dios, que nos provee de todo en abundancia para que lo disfrutemos”. 1 Timoteo 6:17 (NVI)

El único que se preocupa en toda la creación es el ser humano. Las plantas no se preocupan. Los animales no se preocupan. Solo los seres humanos actúan como si no tuviéramos un Padre Celestial. Cuando te preocupas por tus finanzas, básicamente dices: “Creo que Dios es un mentiroso. Realmente no creo que Él supla mis necesidades”. Pero Dios lo hará, si cumples con las condiciones.

Cuando era niño, iba con mi papá y le decía: “Papá, necesito algo de dinero”. Ni una vez, cuando era niño, me pregunté: “¿Dónde lo va a conseguir?” Una regla no escrita sobre el dinero: los papás y las mamás lo ganan, y los niños lo gastan. Los niños nunca se preguntan: “¿Dónde van a conseguir mis padres este dinero?” Nunca me preocupé por eso.

La preocupación es realmente una forma de ateísmo. Cada vez que te preocupas, básicamente dices: “No creo que haya un Dios que me cuide”. Si eres cristiano y te preocupas, estás actuando como un huérfano. Estás actuando como si no tuvieras un Padre celestial que ya ha prometido una y otra vez en las Escrituras: “Supliré tus necesidades si me obedeces y haces lo que te digo que hagas”. La confianza te obliga a vivir por fe.

La preocupación es una luz de advertencia. Cada vez que nos preocupamos por nuestras finanzas, es una advertencia de que dudamos de que Dios nos ame y nos cuide. Siempre nos metemos en problemas cuando dudamos del amor de Dios.

Mateo 6:33 dice, “Busquen el reino de Dios por encima de todo lo demás y lleven una vida justa, y él les dará todo lo que necesiten” (NTV).

Mientras ames algo más que a Dios, esa cosa será una fuente de ansiedad. Solo una cosa estaba destinada al primer lugar en tu vida, y no es tu familia. Cualquier cosa que pongas primero en tu vida además de Dios creará ansiedad, porque esa cosa siempre se puede perder.

Tu cuenta bancaria no es tu seguridad, no importa cuán grande se vuelva. La Biblia dice en 1 Timoteo 6:17: “A los ricos de este mundo, mándales que no sean arrogantes ni pongan su esperanza en las riquezas, que son tan inseguras, sino en Dios, que nos provee de todo en abundancia para que lo disfrutemos” (NVI).

Pon tu esperanza en Dios, porque Él asumirá la responsabilidad de tus necesidades si confías en Él.

Jesus Sees, Cares, and Comes in Your Struggle

“No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.”

John 14:18 (NLT)

Sometimes you find yourself in situations you don’t want and don’t like. In fact, on some days you may feel like the storms of life threaten to drown you. So how do you keep from being blown over by life’s devastating winds? Over the last few days, we’ve looked at three antidotes for stormy days: Stay connected to your spiritual family, put into practice everything you’ve learned, and turn your focus to the greatness of God.

Here’s the fourth antidote: Remind yourself how much Jesus cares.

Not only does Jesus see your struggle, but he also cares about your struggle. And not only does he care, but he also does something about it.

You can see this pattern of Jesus seeing, caring, and doing in the story of Jesus walking on water in Mark 6:47-48: “Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake” (NIV).

The disciples had four things going against them: It was dark, they were in the middle of a lake, they were alone, and “the wind was against them.”  

How did Jesus respond? He didn’t just stand on the shoreline and tell them what to do. Instead, he walked out to them—on the water—in their moment of desperation. He said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Mark 6:50 NIV). Then Jesus climbed into the boat and the wind calmed down.

That’s what Jesus does in your moment of desperation. He cares enough to walk out to where you are—wherever you are—and intervene.

Friends, that’s the Gospel. God came to Earth and became one of us. He took on all of our problems and died on the cross for our sins. He didn’t just shout instructions from heaven. He came to us and said, “I’ll solve the problem that you can’t solve.”

I don’t know what you’re going through right now. But I will tell you this: You may feel abandoned, but you’re not. God sees you, cares for you, and is with you—even in the darkest hour on the stormiest night.

John 14:18 says, “No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you” (NLT).

No matter what problems you’re up against, remind yourself that Jesus cares and let him come to you today.

Talk It Over

Are there times when you don’t want Jesus to see you struggling in life and “straining at the oars,” as Mark 6:48 says? Do you ever want to just fix your problems yourself? Explain.

Es Mejor ser Pobre y Honesto

“Es mejor ser pobre y honesto que deshonesto y necio”. Proverbios 19:1 (NTV)

Dios no bendice la deshonestidad. Proverbios 16:11 dice: “Dios quiere que seas honrado en todos tus negocios” (TLA). Eso incluye sueldos, salarios e impuestos. Si quieres que Dios bendiga tus finanzas, debes ser honesto con ellas. La Biblia también dice que; “ Es mejor ser pobre y honesto que deshonesto y necio” Proverbios 19:1 (NTV).

¿Por qué es este un principio importante? Cuando atraviesas una temporada de estrés financiero, la tentación es enorme para deshacerte de tu integridad y hacer trampa para llegar a fin de mes. Puede significar que ocultas la verdad en una venta o exageras o desinflas el valor de algo. Puede significar que reclamas una deducción falsa en tus impuestos.

Siempre pierdes cuando haces ese tipo de elecciones. Siempre pierdes a la larga cuando pierdes tu integridad. Y eso es lo que llevas al cielo: tu carácter, no tu dinero.

El beneficio que se obtiene deshonestamente trae problemas. ¿Por qué? Si estafas a las personas, otras personas te van a estafar. Si engañas a otros, te van a engañar en la vida. Lo que siembras, cosecharás.

Esta decisión de ser honesto en tus finanzas no es algo que decidas para siempre. Es una decisión diaria. Tendrás la tentación de mentir. A veces la honestidad te cuesta. ¿Has aprendido eso? A veces cuesta decir la verdad en un formulario.

Pero Dios dice que, si eres fiel a Él en esto, nunca tendrás que preocuparte por tus necesidades financieras.

How God’s Greatness Removes Fear

“He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’”

Matthew 8:26-27 (NIV)

Any time you’re in a situation you have absolutely no control over, switch your focus to the greatness of God. That’s called worship, and it’s the third antidote for withstanding the potentially devastating winds of life.

During stormy days—when your health is declining, your spouse is unfaithful, or your friends are critical—you have a choice to make. Are you going to worry? Or are you going to worship?

There is a beautiful example of this in the New Testament. Jesus is out in a boat with his disciples on the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee was—and still is—a huge lake, making it easy for storms to come up suddenly. And that’s exactly what happened.

Matthew 8:24-25 says, “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’” (NIV).

The ship was tossing and turning, but Jesus kept on sleeping. He was at peace; he wasn’t worried. But the disciples were panicked.

Jesus said to them, “‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’” (Matthew 8:26-27 NIV).

The entire experience left the disciples in awe of Jesus. They had forgotten for a moment who Jesus was. But when they saw him display his power over nature, it turned their focus away from their fear and onto God’s greatness. In other words, the experience made them worship.

Worship is one way to set your sail so that the winds of life drive you in the direction you want to go—toward Jesus. Stormy winds can push you off course and threaten to drown you. Instead, let winds of pain, trauma, and stress drive you to focus on God and set your sail toward him.

What are you afraid of in this season of your life? Whatever it is, with Jesus is in your boat, your boat is unsinkable. He has power over nature—and over everything else.

Talk It Over

How have storms in your life drawn you to God? When have storms pushed you away from God?
Describe a time you saw God display his power over nature. How did you react?
When was the last time you were in awe of Jesus? What were the circumstances?

The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Will you trust God to fulfill his promise? Pray this simple prayer: "Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen."

Ora antes de Pagar

“Hasta ahora nada han pedido en Mi nombre; pidan y recibirán, para que su gozo sea completo”. Juan 16:24 (NBLA)

¿Tienes alguna necesidad financiera y estás esperando que Dios te ayude?

Dios ha prometido satisfacer tus necesidades financieras. ¡Solo está esperando que le pidas ayuda! El Señor nunca cierra su bodega hasta que cierres la boca.

Una de las razones por las que vemos tan pocos milagros en nuestras vidas, es porque simplemente no los pedimos. En lugar de vivir una vida basada en Cristo, vivimos una vida basada en el crédito. Cuando tenemos una necesidad, en lugar de pedírselo a Dios, o ni siquiera pensar en pedírselo a Dios, simplemente usamos una tarjeta de crédito. Confiamos en el crédito en lugar de confiar en Cristo.

Si quieres ver a Dios obrar en tu vida, ora por ello antes de pagarlo. ¿Oras por compras grandes antes de hacerlas? ¿O simplemente pagas con tu tarjeta de crédito? Cada vez que usas esa tarjeta de crédito antes de orar por la compra, estás haciendo un cortocircuito en un posible milagro en tu vida. Antes de hacer una compra, ¿por qué no le preguntas a Dios al respecto primero?

Dios no te va a dar todo por lo que oras, pero hay algunas cosas que Él quiere darte solo para hacer un milagro en tu vida. Muchas personas nunca han tenido una respuesta financiera a la oración porque nunca han orado específicamente.

“Hasta ahora nada han pedido en Mi nombre; pidan y recibirán, para que su gozo sea completo” Juan 16:24 (NBLA). ¿Sabes por qué Dios quiere que aprendas a pedir cosas en oración? Para que Él pueda dártelas, y así estarás lleno de alegría. Dios es un padre amoroso. No es un ogro sentado en el cielo, esperando hacer de tu vida un fastidio. ¡Él quiere bendecir tu vida! Sólo tienes que preguntar.

Blessing Comes From Doing

“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

John 13:17 (NIV)

The uncontrollable winds of life—relational winds, financial winds, and spiritual winds—can overwhelm you and throw you off course. But God’s Word is filled with principles to help you withstand even the toughest winds.

Yesterday we looked at the importance of staying connected to your church family. Today we’ll look at another antidote for destructive winds: Put into practice everything you learn.

God doesn’t just want you just to hear his Word. He wants you to do it—to obey it, to practice it.

The Bible says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25 NIV).

Notice the three things that happen in a storm. The rain comes down, attacking the roof of your life. The streams rise, flooding the foundation of your life. And the winds blow, beating against the walls of your life. You’re getting it from the top, the bottom, and the side. And you have no control over any of it.

What do you do with the uncontrollable things of life—that diagnosis you can’t control, a child you can’t control, or financial hardship you can’t control? You put into practice everything you have learned in Scripture. And when you do, you won’t fall down because the foundation of your house is built on the rock.

What’s the rock? The rock is the Word of God. And the more you build your life on it, the more solid you’re going to be. The wind can come and cause enormous problems, but it won’t devastate your life when you’re doing what God says.

John 13:17 says, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (NIV).

That verse doesn’t say you’ll be blessed if you know these things. It says you’ll be blessed if you do them.

Maybe you’re coming out of a stormy season right now—or maybe you’re about to go through one. I can’t stress it enough: Build your life on the unshakeable Word of God. It’s the only foundation you can trust.

Tus Hijos necesitan que seas Motivador

“El amor acepta todo con paciencia. Siempre confía. Nunca pierde la esperanza. Todo lo soporta”. 1 Corintios 13:7 (PDT)

El mundo es tan negativo que lo último que necesitan los niños cuando llegan a casa es más negatividad. Colosenses 3:21 dice, “Padres, no exasperen a sus hijos, para que no se desanimen” (NTV).

¿Eres un padre desagradable? Si tus hijos obtienen C, ¿quieres B? ¿Solo quieres tener A cuando obtienen B? ¿Realmente quieres que se den por vencidos, como dice la Biblia? Los padres difíciles de complacer producen hijos inseguros.

Entonces, ¿cómo crías niños seguros? La Biblia dice en 1 Corintios 13:7, “El amor acepta todo con paciencia. Siempre confía. Nunca pierde la esperanza. Todo lo soporta” (PDT). Si deseas criar niños seguros, debes animarlos más que desanimarlos. Tienes que dar más elogios que críticas.

Muchos padres piensan: “Si hago un balance y doy la misma cantidad de lo positivo y lo negativo, todo estará bien”. ¡No! Debes dar unos 10 elogios por cada cosa negativa. ¿Por qué? Porque lo negativo es lo que recuerdas. Si recibieras 10 cumplidos y una crítica, ¿cuál irías a casa y recordarías? Si recibo 10 cartas que dicen: “Ese sermón realmente me ayudó mucho” y una que dice: “¡Estás fuera de onda!”, ¿En cuál crees que pienso más?

Debes enfatizar demasiado lo positivo, porque inevitablemente vas a hacer lo negativo.

Todos los niños necesitan a alguien de su lado, alguien que sea su motivador y crea en ellos y diga: “Sé que puedes hacerlo. Creo en ti. Creo que eres genial. Eres lo mejor. ¡Ve por ello! Te respaldaré. Sé que puedes lograrlo”. Los niños necesitan la confianza que solo un padre puede brindar.

¿Cómo edificas regularmente a tu hijo? ¿Con palabras? ¿Con acciones?¿Cuáles son las frases más comunes que usas con tu hijo? ¿Cuántas son positivas? ¿Cuántas son negativas?¿Quién dirían tus hijos que es su mayor motivador y por qué?
