Where Do You Get the Power to Keep Going?

“We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.”

2 Corinthians 4:9 (TLB)

If you’ve ever been at a race, then you’ve heard spectators shout, “Keep going!” to motivate the athletes. That’s also great advice for anyone who feels emotionally, mentally, or spiritually exhausted from running the marathon of life: Keep going!

Scripture includes many examples of people who had determination to keep going in the face of opposition, including Jesus and Paul.

Jesus faced constant opposition. Religious and political leaders intimidated him. They tried to stop his ministry by telling him that King Herod wanted to kill him.

But Jesus said to them, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose. Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way” (Luke 13:32-33 NLT).

Nothing was going to stop Jesus from accomplishing his purposes—not fear, opposition, or criticism. He was resilient and had the endurance to keep on keeping on.

Paul also faced obstacles that threatened to slow him down. In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, he said, “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going” (TLB).

Maybe that sounds familiar, because you feel like troubles are coming at you from many directions. You’re tired and worn out, and you don’t think you’ll make it to the finish line.

How do you keep going?

You get the power to keep going in the same place Jesus and Paul got it: from God.

“We can only keep on going, after all, by the power of God, who first saved us and then called us to this holy work” (2 Timothy 1:8-9 MSG).

God doesn’t expect you to fulfill your purpose and do his will in your own power. First, he saves you, and then he gives you the power for daily living. He will give you everything you need to keep going and finish what he has called you to do.

What kind of fear, opposition, or criticism tempts you to pull back from doing the things God has called you to do?
In what way do you feel “pressed on every side by troubles” today?
Where do people turn, other than to God, to get the power they need to endure hardships? Why is only God’s power strong enough to carry you through?

Deja ir y Entiende que Dios Tiene el Control

«¡Quédense quietos y sepan que yo soy Dios! Toda nación me honrará. Seré honrado en el mundo entero». Salmo 46:10 (NTV)

Todos los días, decide quién va a tener el control de tu vida: tú o Dios.

Esa elección es una batalla porque hay cosas en la vida que quieres controlar. Quieres hacer tus propias reglas. Pero el alivio al estrés siempre comienza con dejar que Dios sea Dios. Siempre comienza diciendo: “Dios, te estoy cediendo el control, porque solo tú puedes controlar las cosas que están fuera de control en mi vida”.

La razón número uno por la que estás estresado es porque estás tratando de controlar cosas que solo Dios puede controlar. No puedes controlar a tu cónyuge, tus hijos, tu trabajo, tu futuro o tu pasado. Cuando tratas de jugar a ser Dios, te pones en oposición a Dios. No solo perderás ese conflicto, sino que también estarás cansado y estresado.

El Salmo 46:10 dice: «¡Quédense quietos y sepan que yo soy Dios! Toda nación me honrará. Seré honrado en el mundo entero» (NTV).

No sé a qué te enfrentarás esta semana. tú tampoco lo sabes. Pero ya puedo decirte lo que Dios quiere que hagas: Suelta el control y confía en que Él tiene el control.

¡Déjate llevar y conócelo! Este es el primer paso hacia la serenidad.

Cuando las personas se enfrentan a situaciones fuera de control y se sienten estresadas, a menudo vamos a uno de dos extremos. Para algunos de ustedes, cuanto más se descontrola tu vida, más difícil es tratar de controlarla. Otros hacen exactamente lo contrario: simplemente se rinden y empiezan a sentir lástima de sí mismos.

Ambas reacciones al estrés son tontas. No funcionan. En lugar de ser una víctima o volverte controlador al extremo, debes hacer una oración de rendición.

Millones de personas hacen “La Oración de la Serenidad”, que se basa en el Padre Nuestro, pero la mayoría nunca ha leído las últimas ocho líneas de la oración: “Vivir un día a la vez, disfrutar un momento a la vez; aceptar las dificultades como un camino hacia la paz; tomando, como lo hizo Jesús, este mundo pecaminoso como es, no como yo quiero que sea; confiando en que Tú arreglarás todas las cosas si me entrego a Tu voluntad; para que pueda ser razonablemente feliz en esta vida y supremamente feliz contigo para siempre en la próxima vida. Amén”.

¡Ahí es donde está el poder! El poder viene cuando entregas a Dios todo lo que has estado tratando de controlar. Y eso te llevará a vivir una vida de serenidad.

Communion Leads to Gratitude

“Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?”

1 Corinthians 10:16 (NIV)

When we take Communion, we are reminded of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

It’s not an empty ritual that Christians do just because they have to. Instead, God wants us to practice Communion to help us remember. Why do we need to remember? So we can be grateful. You can only be grateful for those things that you remember.

Communion is also called the Lord’s Supper. It is a habit of gratitude because it helps us remember what Jesus did for us on the cross.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 11:23-25, “On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.’

“When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, ‘This cup is the new promise made with my blood. Every time you drink from it, do it to remember me’” (GW).

Jesus gave us the bread and the wine as a memory tool. We use this tool to practice gratitude for what it cost Jesus to pay for our salvation.

Another word for Communion is the Eucharist. This is a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” Communion is meant to be a model of thanksgiving. It’s one of God’s favorite ways that we give thanks to him! We can show thanks to God in many ways—through songs of thanksgiving, through thanksgiving offerings, or through the thanksgiving cup.

“Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10:16 NIV).

When we drink from a Communion cup and eat the bread, we are saying to God, “Father, thank you for sending your Son to live a perfect life and die for our sins so that we can be forgiven.”

As we remind ourselves of the high price Jesus paid to save us, the only reasonable response is gratitude.

Talk It Over

When you take Communion, do you usually do it with a spirit of gratitude? Why or why not?

If you’ve never committed your life to Jesus, then you can pray this simple prayer of faith today:

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin and ask you to forgive me. I believe that you are God, my Savior, and I want you to be Lord of my life. Today, I’m turning every part of my life over to you. I want to follow you and do what you tell me to do.

“Jesus, I am grateful for your love and for your sacrifice that makes it possible for me to have a relationship with you and join you in heaven someday. I know I don’t deserve it. And I thank you that I don’t have to earn or work for my salvation, because I know that is impossible. I want to use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you, and I ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Nada es Demasiado Grande para Dios

“Que toda la gloria sea para Dios, quien puede lograr mucho más de lo que pudiéramos pedir o incluso imaginar mediante su gran poder, que actúa en nosotros”. Efesios 3:20 (NTV)

Dios es un Padre competente. Él puede manejar cualquier problema que le des. Nada está más allá de su capacidad o de sus recursos. Ninguna petición es demasiado grande o pequeña.

Una mujer me preguntó una vez: “Rick, ¿realmente está bien que hable con Dios sobre las cosas pequeñas de mi vida? ¿No debería simplemente hablar con Él sobre los grandes problemas? La miré y dije: “¿Te imaginas a Dios considerando cualquier problema demasiado grande? Todo es pequeño para Él. No hay nada demasiado grande o pequeño para Dios”.

La Biblia dice: “¡Porque para Dios no hay nada imposible!” Lucas 1:37 (NVI). Después de leer eso, eliminé la palabra “imposible” de mi diccionario porque no está en el vocabulario de Dios. Con Dios nada es imposible.

Me sorprende lo que mis hijos pensaban que yo era capaz de arreglar cuando eran pequeños. Esperaban que lo supiera todo, arreglara cualquier cosa y pudiera pagarlo todo. A medida que crecían, aprendieron que su padre tenía conocimientos limitados, energía limitada, recursos limitados, habilidades limitadas, todo limitado.

Pero tu Padre celestial realmente puede hacer cualquier cosa. Efesios 3:20 dice: “Que toda la gloria sea para Dios, quien puede lograr mucho más de lo que pudiéramos pedir o incluso imaginar mediante su gran poder, que actúa en nosotros” (NTV).

Soy un gran soñador. He tenido muchos grandes sueños en mi vida, y Dios ha cumplido muchos de ellos. Pero Dios dice: “No me importa cuánto sueñes, Rick; Todavía puedo superarlo. Puedo soñar más grande de lo que tú puedes soñar”.

Las imposibilidades de ayer son los milagros de hoy. ¡Dios se especializa en lo imposible! Es un Padre competente.

The Real First Thanksgiving

“Celebrate the Harvest Festival, to honor the LORD your God, by bringing him a freewill offering in proportion to the blessing he has given you.”

Deuteronomy 16:10 (GNT)

The gathering most Americans think of as the first Thanksgiving happened 400 years ago.

But 3,000 years before that, God told the nation of Israel to establish a thanksgiving festival called the Feast of Weeks. They were to celebrate God’s goodness and express their gratitude to him by bringing him a special, annual thanksgiving offering.

Deuteronomy 16:10-11 says, “Celebrate the Harvest Festival, to honor the LORD your God, by bringing him a freewill offering in proportion to the blessing he has given you . . . Do this at the one place of worship” (GNT).

On this original day of thanksgiving, the Israelites were to bring a gift of thanksgiving to the place of thanksgiving—the temples where they worshipped. This thanksgiving offering has been practiced by God’s people for thousands of years and is mentioned many times in Scripture.

God says in Psalm 50:23, “Those people honor me who bring me offerings to show thanks. And I, God, will save those who do that” (NCV).

The Bible tells us many times what kind of offering we should give: We are to give God the first part of our income—not the leftovers. We should put God first in our finances.

Anytime you give an offering to God, it represents three kinds of gratitude: past, present, and future. Your offering shows gratitude for God’s blessing in the past and his blessing today and faith in God’s continued blessing in the future. God always honors faith with his blessing.

In the Bible, there are more promises attached to faithful giving and generosity than any other subject. Why? Because God wants his children to be like him. And he is a generous God!

Jesus says in Luke 6:38, “If you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give—large or small—will be used to measure what is given back to you” (TLB).

If you’ve trusted Jesus to forgive your sin and save your soul, then you can trust God to keep his promise to take care of you. Your thanksgiving offering shows God that you trust him for all things and at all times.

Dios está Cerca y te Entiende

“El Señor está cerca de todos los que lo invocan, sí, de todos los que lo invocan de verdad”. Salmo 145:18 (NTV)

Dios no está lejos. De hecho, es todo lo contrario. Está tan cerca como el siguiente latido de tu corazón.

Él está allí contigo en todo momento. La Biblia dice: “Su propósito era que las naciones buscaran a Dios y, quizá acercándose a tientas, lo encontraran; aunque él no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros” Hechos 17:27 (NTV).

Puedes sentir que Dios está a un millón de millas de distancia. Pero tus sentimientos y la realidad no siempre coinciden. La verdad es que Dios está contigo ahora mismo.

Aquí hay tres verdades acerca de tu Padre Celestial:

Él nunca está demasiado ocupado para ti. A veces estás demasiado ocupado para Dios. Pero Él nunca está demasiado ocupado para ti. Ese es el tipo de amor que tiene por ti. El Salmo 145:18 dice: “El Señor está cerca de todos los que lo invocan, sí, de todos los que lo invocan de verdad” (NVI). Cada vez que llamas, Dios está cerca. Él piensa en ti mucho más de lo que tú piensas en Él. Pensó en ti antes de que nacieras y piensa en ti a cada momento del día.

Le complace satisfacer tus necesidades. No lo hace a regañadientes, ¡le complace! Mateo 7:11 dice: Si ustedes… saben dar buenos regalos a sus hijos, cuánto más su Padre celestial dará buenos regalos a quienes le pidan” (NTV). Simplemente disfruta el hecho de que a Dios le encanta darte buenos regalos.

Dios es comprensivo con tus heridas. Si estás pasando por algo difícil esta semana, es posible que necesites este versículo: “El Señor está cerca de los que tienen quebrantado el corazón; él rescata a los de espíritu destrozado” Salmo 34:18 (NTV). Dios es compasivo. Él no está parado al margen. Él está presente en tu dolor.

Dios está cerca de ti y entiende por lo que estás pasando. Vuélvete a Dios; ¡Él está esperándote!

How to Focus on What’s Important, Not Urgent

“Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.”

Ephesians 5:16 (NLT)

It may feel like the 365 days you’re given each year aren’t enough time to do everything you want to do. In fact, you probably feel like there aren’t enough minutes in this day to accomplish what you think you need to do!

But here’s the good news: God doesn’t expect you to do everything. He has given you just enough time to do everything he wants you to do—everything he planned and purposed for you to do.

That’s why it’s important for you to set goals. Goals help you focus your life. Paul models this when he says, “I do not run without a goal. I fight like a boxer who is hitting something — not just the air” (1 Corinthians 9:26 NCV).

Paul knew his purpose, and all his plans and goals were focused on it. You need to have that same kind of focus.

Too many of us focus our lives on unimportant causes. Trivial Pursuit isn’t just a game; it’s a description of our culture. Most of what’s going on in our world today won’t matter in a week—much less for eternity.

Many people can’t tell the difference between “urgent” and “important.” What seems urgent is almost never what is important. ­­We put aside our family time, our time with God, and our time with friends for the urgent matters that rarely matter for long.

Goals are how you focus and create the kind of life that chases the important rather than what feels urgent. Goals focus your energy and help bring health and balance to your life.

For example, if you made it your goal to get healthy in some specific way this year, then that decision will focus your energy on that task. Anytime you’re tempted to eat junk food or skip a workout for extra sleep, your goal will help you stay on track. It will remind you of what’s important.

The Bible says, “Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days” (Ephesians 5:16 NLT).

Make the most of your life by setting some goals. Don’t waste another year on the urgent rather than the important.

Puedes Contar con Dios

“Todo lo que es bueno y perfecto es un regalo que desciende a nosotros de parte de Dios nuestro Padre, quien creó todas las luces de los cielos. Él nunca cambia ni varía como una sombra en movimiento”. Santiago 1:17 (NTV)

Cuando todo está cambiando a tu alrededor, es importante recordar que Dios es un Padre constante. Él nunca te decepcionará. Se puede contar con Dios. Él es confiable y digno de tu confianza.

Santiago 1:17 dice: “Todo lo que es bueno y perfecto es un regalo que desciende a nosotros de parte de Dios nuestro Padre, quien creó todas las luces de los cielos.  Él nunca cambia ni varía como una sombra en movimiento” (NTV).

Algunos padres humanos son impredecibles. Al crecer, algunas personas nunca supieron cómo las iba a tratar su padre. Nunca sabían si iba a ser silencioso o violento, si los iba a abrazar o lastimar, o si los iba a aceptar o rechazar. Los padres inconsistentes producen hijos inseguros.

Pero Dios no tiene un humor cambiante. Tu Padre celestial es consecuente. Una de las cosas con las que puedes contar acerca de Dios es que siempre actuará de la misma manera contigo.

La Biblia dice en 2 Timoteo 2:13: “Si somos infieles, él permanece fiel, pues él no puede negar quién es” (NTV).

El mundo está cambiando más rápido que nunca. Por eso, cuando todo lo demás está en el aire, necesitas algo en tu vida que nunca cambie: un ancla para tu alma.

Solo hay un problema; en este planeta, nada dura. Pero hay una cosa con la que puedes contar por toda la eternidad, el amor constante y afectuoso de tu Padre celestial.

La Biblia dice: “En su amor inagotable, mi Dios estará a mi lado” Salmo 59:10 (NTV).

Siempre puedes contar con eso.

The Kind of Goals God Blesses

“I do not run without a goal. I fight like a boxer who is hitting something—not just the air.”

1 Corinthians 9:26 (NCV)

Without goals, you cannot expect to be any different this year than you were last year. The default in your life will always be more of the same.

Long-term goals keep us moving toward our purpose and keep us from being discouraged by short-term setbacks.

We all have setbacks. You deal with them every day, but those setbacks won’t slow you down if your focus is on something you’re trying to achieve down the road. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 9:26, “I do not run without a goal. I fight like a boxer who is hitting something—not just the air” (NCV).

You don’t want to spend the next year hitting the air. But just setting goals isn’t the answer. God doesn’t appreciate every goal you set!

These are the kinds of goals that God blesses: 

Goals that bring God honor: The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (NIV).If you’ve got the right motivation, anything can be done for God’s glory.Goals that are motivated by love: God is far more interested in why you’re doing something than what you’re actually doing. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 16:14,“Do everything with love” (NLT).Goals that fulfill one of God’s purposes for your life: God put you on Earth to do five things: worship him, be a part of his family, become like Christ, serve him, and share your life message. If your goals help you fulfill one of these purposes, then God will bless them.Goals that are set in faith: Your goals must be big enough that they’ll require God’s help to fulfill. The Bible says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV).Goals that are achieved by God’s power: You will not stick to your goals without God’s power. You won’t get healthy on your own. You won’t improve your marriage on your own. The goals that really matter in life can only be achieved with God’s power, not your own.

Take a look at the goals you’ve set for the future. Are they the kind of goals that God blesses?

Dios es Consciente y Cuida de Ti

“El Señor es como un padre con sus hijos, tierno y compasivo con los que le temen”. Salmo 103:13 (NTV)

Dios es un Padre cariñoso, amoroso y compasivo. Él te ama más de lo que jamás podrías comprender.

Dios es amor, y te creó para amarte. Él te ama en todo lo que hace; Su compasión es una de sus cualidades más destacadas.

La Biblia dice en el Salmo 103:13: “El Señor es como un padre con sus hijos, tierno y compasivo con los que le temen” (NTV). Él se preocupa por todo en tu vida, con compasión.

La mayoría de los discípulos de Jesús eran pescadores profesionales. Un día, mientras pescaban, Jesús se cansó y se fue a dormir dentro de la barca. Cuando vino una tormenta, no debería haber molestado a los discípulos. Como pescadores, estaban acostumbrados a las tormentas. Pero esta tormenta debió haber sido grande, porque se asustaron. El barco se balanceaba de lado a lado; entraba agua en la barca. Estaban frenéticos y despertaron a Jesús para hacerle una de las preguntas más importantes de la vida: “Señor, ¿no te importa?”.

Tú y yo le hacemos esa pregunta a Dios todo el tiempo y de mil maneras: “Dios, ¿Viste ese informe del médico? ¿no te importa? ¿Ves en qué lío está mi matrimonio? ¿no te importa? ¿Ves cómo mis hijos están luchando en la escuela? ¿no te importa? ¿Te das cuenta cómo el miedo se apodera de mi mente? ¿no te importa?

La respuesta es ésta: Sí, a Dios le importa. De hecho, se interesa más de lo que crees. Él quiere ayudar más de lo que tú deseas que te ayude. Él sabe lo que te ayudará más de lo que tú crees que te ayudará. Él es consciente y cuida de ti.

La Biblia dice: “Pongan todas sus preocupaciones y ansiedades en las manos de Dios, porque él cuida de ustedes” 1 Pedro 5:7 (NTV).

Si supieras y sintieras cuánto tu Padre celestial se preocupa constante y compasivamente, no podrías evitar amarlo de vuelta.

Da el primer paso hacia la paz interior hoy y “pon todas tus preocupaciones y ansiedades” sobre tu compasivo Padre celestial.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Qué cosas te están preocupando en este momento?¿Crees que a Dios le importan tus preocupaciones? ¿Por qué o por qué no?¿Qué significa “Pongan todas sus preocupaciones y ansiedades en las manos de Dios”?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más?
