Top 10 Reads of 2016
2016 continued another year where audiobooks constitute 95% of the books I complete. This is tough when some of my favorite indie authors haven’t adapted their books to that format, but I’m seeing that trending upward. For my award winners in years past: 2015 | 2014 | 2013
1. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Looking for a mind bender that is easy to get into and hard to get out of? Enjoy tales of husbands realizing how to truly love their wives, and then watching how far they’ll go to show it? Ar...

Reading Update 1/16 – Smythe, Cole, Thorp, Bunker, Sullivan, Genesis
Handful of books around 30% that I’m jumping back and forth on. All are good, but the two spec fic titles, The Testimony and The Lost Castle are not hooking me like I want. Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp is the book Die Hard was made from. This is both very cool–like a DVD editors cut version but better because it’s a book–but also a bit I’ve seen this before, so that’s dragging too.
The Testimony is a collection of viewpoints from people in our time after a voice has been heard aro...

Hell and the Sea is a well written train wreck
I’m a Patreon supporter of Amish Sci-fi author and off the grid entrepreneur, Michael Bunker. I pay $1 a month to get a new chapter in his unreleased novel, Hell and the Sea. I first became a fan of Michael when he serialized his novel, Pennsylvania a few years ago. When he announced his new book, Hell and the Sea, I was excited to see how he could once again make me an addict chomping at the bit to read the next installment.
He hasn’t disappointed.
The problem is, I’m not sure if I should fe...

Audiobook Review: END OF WATCH by Stephen King (Narr. Will Patton)
End of Watch (The Bill Hodges Trilogy, Book Three) by Stephen King
Narrated by Will Patton
Produced by Simon and Schuster Audio
Five Stars. That was a great trilogy. King is at the top of the game, and the same goes for his audiobooks. It will be hard to say which of the three books I like better, though they were all outstanding. In this one, the character development of Holly was the most interesting, but it seemed the rest of our main characters remained where we left them, with only a new...

Book Review – FIGHT THE ROOSTER by Nick Cole
Fight the Rooster by Nick Cole
Five out of Five stars
This kind of book deserves an essay on what it means to live, how we struggle to make our dreams a joy and not a burden, and then also how we recover when we feel like our dreams have driven us from those we love and our ability to love ourselves.
You’ll be better off reading this novel over that essay. Nick has a way of showing people in moments that seem normal but which capture the changing of their hearts. This is a story about a dire...

Audiobook Review: THE NIGHT PARADE by Ronald Malfi (Narr. Tom Taylorson)
Ronald Malfi is one of the best. My original thought after finishing this book is that Malfi is one of the best horror authors out there, partly because of how he is able to creatively expand the limits of horror, but really, “horror” doesn’t feel like an adequate qualifier for his work. I feel others hear “horror” and think of Chainsaw Massacre or Freddy Krueger…though there is a little Krueger mind games in this. They hear “horror” and think the story to come is going to be full of violence...

Making Reading Fun Again
It’s been twenty two years since a friend handed me his copy of Dragons of Autumn Twilight–twenty two years since I fell in love with Fantasy books and a more adult form of reading appreciation. It’s been ten years since another friend handed me Ender’s Game, and showed me his book shelf full of Dune prequels and other Science Fiction treasures. It’s been about three years since my love for reading and writing put me in a place where Shaun Farrell called me to ask if I would be the newest exe...

Audiobook Review – FINDERS KEEPERS by Stephen King (Narr. Will Patton)
Finders Keepers by Stephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Combining best in the game storytelling and audiobook narrators, this series is one outstanding read after another. King’s follow-up to Mr. Mercedes surprised me with how it improved on all the best parts of the previous book while introducing all new characters and mystery. I really enjoyed the storyline of a young man finding the score of unpublished books by one of the century’s greatest storytellers. Props to King for including just...
