Winning Appeal Prologue

May? How in the hell could it be May? I looked at my desk calendar with disbelief.

May – Cameron and Jessica had been engaged for a month. Bruce and Jason had been married for two, Adam and Lily married for four. Was Las Vegas that long ago already? And Gabrielle and Braden, wow, they would be together a year soon. And what about me? Me, I hadn’t even gotten laid since November. That’s right. No sex. Since No VEMBER.

Now, I knew others had gone much longer than seven months. There were priests, and nuns … and Amish people. But I wasn’t one of them. I was a single, twenty-six year old woman. I was five foot eight and healthy, with long, blonde hair and green eyes. People told me that I was very attractive.

I was decently intelligent and I had a good education. I had a good sense of humor and I wasn’t uptight. Hell, I even came from a wealthy family. I was freaking blessed. So … why couldn’t I get laid, you might ask? Go ahead … ask. I’m going to tell you anyway.  It was because my father was a senator, and when your father was a senator, you had to be careful.

The world was full of paparazzi, just waiting for you to embarrass yourself, so they could capture the moment for posterity and plaster it all over the internet and social media. Even worse, the world was full of guys who papered their walls with pictures of women they Googled, and had conversations with their neighbor’s dog.

Safety and discretion were my code words. It wasn’t like I could just go out to a club and meet somebody for a casual hook-up, even though my older brother never had a problem doing it before his marriage, and my younger brother still did it. Nobody seemed to care much if senator’s sons liked to party, and while there may have been some unstable women waiting out there, it was pretty unlikely they would slip a six foot three inch guy a roofie.

Of course, I could always date, and I had. But the guys I dated always started out seeming great, and wound up mostly interested in my money and my family connections. There was much more to me than that. I wanted someone to be interested in me, and I would not date someone who was using me, even as a way to get laid. I would rather have an ongoing relationship with my vibrator.

And then there was another issue. I was attracted to someone, and lately, nobody else seemed to interest me. He was someone who I saw almost every day, but didn’t have access to, even though he was straight, single, and obviously attracted to me too. He was an attorney who worked at the same legal clinic where I handled fundraising. But he was one of my older brother’s closest friends. The thing that got me the most, was that he would be the ideal person to have a fun, casual, sexy relationship with. I knew and trusted him. He would be safe and discreet and he wasn’t after my money. But he wasn’t going to touch me.

So, here we were at month seven. I spent my weekdays trying to concentrate and not be distracted by my attraction for Mark Patterson. I spent my weekends going to fund raising events and being hit on by creepers. What fun. I’m Beth Pierce. Welcome to my life.

The book not the genre

I have a short window to read after I release Legally Wed on 24th. My iPad is crammed with books I want to read, but I still like to “stock up” periodically. So, I went to Amazon yesterday, and even though I’m sure all of the books on the best seller lists in romance are terrific, nothing really jumped out at me. Then, as I was wandering around aimlessly, I came across a book that excited me a lot. In fact, so much that I downloaded it and all of the books in the series – a HUGE leap of faith for me because I’m a picky reader. The thing is, this book wasn’t listed in the romance section, but in the mystery and humor sections. It was described as a “humorous romantic mystery” and an ode to one of my favorite authors – Agatha Christie.

Then it dawned on me – maybe that’s the direction in which I’m moving. After the Lawyers in Love series is complete, I plan to do a spin-off series with Gab & Braden, Jess & Cam, Adam & Lily and Mark & Beth working together at The Justice Project. Since they are romantic and sexy couples, I figured there would be romance and sexiness, (I know – I amaze myself with my brilliance too), but since they’re already together, I pictured the main plot-line revolving around the cases they handled. It never really sunk in before that I was picturing a shift from a humorous romance novel with a dash of mystery to a humorous mystery novel with a dash of romance.

So, why is this important to anyone but me?  Well, because when authors write books we market them in certain ways to reach certain audiences. If I’m putting out mystery novels they won’t necessarily pop up in a search for romance. Thus, I’m asking you right now, even if you don’t consider yourself a mystery fan, be open-minded. A book doesn’t have to be a romance novel per se to be romantic and sexy. Don’t get caught up with labels and genres and don’t just shop in one place. There are some books listed in Women’s Fiction that have scenes more erotic than books listed in erotica. There are books listed in erotica that have more interesting plots than books listed in suspense. You have to put it somewhere, but these days there’s not always one easy answer to the question “What kind of book is it?”

And in the news …

Until I have a bigger list of recipients for my newsletter, (sign up on my website – http://nmsilber.com), I’ll just update you here and there, and share it everywhere. :)

The Philly signing was so great I have decided to try to get to a few more after all. I’ve been hesitant because It’s hard to be away from my sons who are on the autism spectrum, but I’m going to try to bring them with me as often as possible since we homeschool anyway. Thus, I will be attending Penned Con in St. Louis in September. (I’ll also be attending Philly Author Fest in November, likely Wicked Book Weekend in February, the Capital City Author Event in D.C. in March, and the Harrisburg author event in July 2015.).

I’ve been using “working covers” on Goodreads and in other places prior to publishing my newest books. I actually like the one to Legally Wed so much that I’m keeping it, but I’m having the others designed by the very talented Ashley at Redbird Designs, who did the cover for Legal Briefs. The mock-up cover for Power of Attorney is …. wow. Just wow. I already have some blurbs from other authors and some review quotes from bloggers, about the series, but, if you have a quote about my books that I might be able to use on a front or back cover, or on a “praise for” page, I welcome you to share it with me and I thank you in advance. I’m not a person who waits until the last second for a cover reveal, so I’m probably going release the official covers well in advance of publication.

My agents negotiated an international publishing deal for me that I’m very happy about – details to come soon. Why do you care about that one? Well, if you are in another country, and English is not your first language, you may be able to buy my funny dirty books in your first language in bookstores there soon. I was going to do an audio book, but I’ve decided against it until I find a reader who I really like and that might take a while. I’m picky about about that stuff. Trust me, it’s better to wait for someone who doesn’t sound cheesy.

Legally Wed is coming out on the 24th without a whole lot of fanfare so I hope you’ll keep it in mind that day. If I can get it uploaded a day early I will. My friends, Daisy Prescott and Penny Reid both have books coming out soon – Missionary Position on June 10th and Neanderthal Marries Human on June 24th. Those two women rock – they are both very talented writers. Totally worth a One Click. Tell others!

Thanks again to the Rock Stars of Romance for the terrific profile of my books this weekend and to the SubClub for having shared Chapter One of legally Wed.

Thank you everyone and have a good night! Day. Whatever.

From Power of Attorney

I was walking through my office Friday afternoon with Rachel when I heard him.

“Ms. Roth, I need to speak with you.” I slowed down and sighed. He was with Mr. Goldman and they caught up in less than two seconds – damned long legs. I stopped walking and turned to face him.

“Yes, Mr. Sachs.” He just stood there looking at me with a smile playing at the corners of his lips. Have I mentioned that they were really nice lips? Stop looking at the lips, Abby. Why wasn’t he saying anything? “Yes!” I repeated.

“Sorry – I like hearing you say that.” I saw Mr. Goldman put a fist to his mouth and look away. Yeah, I’d like to put a fist to his mouth too. You know, I can’t ever remember having actually sneered before I met Mr. Sachs.

“Is there something you want?” I caught myself. “That I might be willing to give you.”

“It’s Friday.”

“And they say he’s just a pretty face,” I said to Rachel sarcastically. It was her turn to try not to laugh.

“People who are dating tend to spend Friday nights together, genius.”

“Mr. Sachs, are you asking me out on a date?” I inquired in a voice loud enough to be heard all over the building.

“I figured you could use one,” he answered even louder.

My Writing Process (Blog Hop)

I’d like to thank Kym Grosso for including me in this blog hop.  It was started by Laurel O’Donnell several weeks ago, and Kym was nice enough to tag me.

Under the rules, I’m to answer four questions…

What am I working on?

I am about to release Legally Wed, (A Lawyers in Love novella), and I am currently writing Winning Appeal (Lawyers in Love #4), and beginning to outline and write Power of Attorney (Lawyers in Love #5). I am also writing a short story for a multi-author sexy Romantic Comedy anthology coming out this summer.  After that, I will be including a novella in another multi-author Romantic Comedy anthology coming out just before Halloween. It’s going to be a busy year!

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

My work straddles several genres, romance, comedy/humor, erotica and mystery. That’s what makes it different – the fact that it includes elements from so many different kinds of novels.

Why do I write what I do?

I write books about attorneys because I myself was an attorney and I draw inspiration from that experience. I write humorous books because I love to laugh and to make others laugh. I believe that laughter is good for the soul. I write romantic books because a like a good love story with a happily ever after. I write books with erotic elements because I think that sex is a natural part of a relationship and I enjoy reading it and writing it.  I write books with elements of mystery because I’ve always been a fan of mystery novels and I love figuring out whodunits. I was inspired by a quote by Toni Morrison – “If there’s a book you want to read that hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” I wanted to read books that were funny, sexy, romantic and had some mystery. I didn’t see any that had all of those things, so I wrote some. I have discovered that I love writing them.

How does your writing process work?

I come up with an idea for a plot and I make a loose outline. From there, I write and let the story evolve and change as appropriate along the way. I usually write from beginning to end, but I may write individual scenes out-of-sequence if I am inspired. (Sometimes, I’ll dream a scene or it will just pop into my head.) I write a few chapters and then backtrack and edit them. I often share my scenes with a group of my regular readers to get their feedback and their opinion of them. After I complete a book, I have it edited and beta read before I release it.

Next week, on June 11th, (or thereabouts), you will get to hear from these 3 terrific authors:

Penny Reid – Author of the Best Selling Knitting in the City series

Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.

I’m originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family. I work full time in the biotech industry as a researcher. I work a lot. I’m also a full time mom to two diminutive adults (boy-5 and girl-3), wife, daughter, knitter, crocheter, sewer, general crafter, and thought hijacker.

I don’t like to sit still unless I’m writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group… or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I’m trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.

The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months.

If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others.

Daisy Prescott, Best Selling author of Geoducks are for Lovers, Ready to Fall and Missionary Position (Coming 6/10)

Before writing funny contemporary romances about adults, I dreamed of being an author while doing a lot of other things. Antiques dealer, baker, blue ribbon pie-maker, fangirl, freelance writer, gardener, pet mom and wife are a few of the titles I’ve acquired along the way.

Born and raised in San Diego, my husband and I currently live in a real life Stars Hollow in the Boston suburbs with our dog, Hubbell, and an imaginary house goat.

Ready to Fall, my second novel, features John Day, the hot, sexy neighbor in my debut novel Geoducks Are for Lovers. Both can be read as standalones.

My third novel, Missionary Position, a contemporary romance/romantic comedy, will be released on June 10, 2014. It stars Selah Elmore, from Geoducks, and can be read as a standalone.

Katherine Rhodes Best Selling author of the Club Imperial Series

Armed with her Bachelors of English, Literature from Montclair State University and a pen name, Katherine Rhodes has set her mind to writing erotic romances which are kinky, dirty, and fun. A lackadaisical laundry goddess, expert in the profundities of bad movies and awful literature, she resides in Philadelphia with her husband, three cats and a betta named Fishtian Grey.
