What’s Up Wednesday 21

What I’m Reading

Started The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski. Not very far along yet, but I’m enjoying it. I’ve heard wonderful things :)

Anyone read it yet? Thoughts?

What I’m Writing

Turned in first pass pages. Editor informed me that after this pass, I can no longer add anything (I was totally still squeezing whole paragraphs into my FPP). It’s awesome knowing how close my book is to being done, but it’s also terrifying. You know what else is terrifying? How many times I thought ‘GOD, THIS SUC...

What’s Up Wednesday 20

What I’m Reading

Recently finished the Torn Trilogy by Erica O’Rourke. Holy wow, you guys o_o I read all three books in the span of one week because they were just so compelling. And this was in between revision as well. I had to exert all my will power to put the books down so I could complete my own daily work.

I adore Mo/Maureen, the protag. She grows and learns to take control of her own story and her own fate as the books progress. And OH MY GOD LUC. I have such a crush on him that it’s no...

Writing Process Meme

I was tagged for this “My Writing Process Blog Tour” by the fabulous Meredith McCardle, author of The Eighth Guardian and fellow Skyscaper.

1. What am I working on?

The sequel to Gates of Thread and Stone. I just sent the ms to my editor so I’m now in that period of waiting for feedback before getting into revisions. In the mean time, I’ll be attempting to plot out another fantasy. I’m excited about it :)

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I don’t like to stick rigidly to genre...

Diversity in YA Novels – Building a Middle Eastern World

Check out this fantastic post about diversity by Renee Ahdieh, author of THE WRATH AND THE DAWN, a reimagining of The Arabian Nights.

Interestingly enough, the actual tales that comprise 1001 Nights are incredibly diverse in nature. For instance, Aladdin was originally written as a young Chinese boy!

With such wonderful diversity at the heart of the story, it hardened my resolve to be as accurate as possible when depicting my chosen tale: the saga of Scheherazade and how she staved off her impe...

Playing With Archetypes—The Villain (by Kathryn Rose)

Kathryn Rose, author of Camelot Burning and brilliant woman that she is, has a fabulous post about villains and archetypes over on the A Game of Tomes blog. You should totally check it out :)

“I love writing scenes where my villains are prominent. As someone who’d most definitely be a Slytherin if she weren’t already a Ravenclaw, I have a soft spot in my heart for well-crafted and believable bad guys. Here are some elements I love in a great villain.

When the creator knows the difference between...

2014 Spring Fling Writers Conference

Will any of you be at the Spring Fling Writers Conference in Chicago from April 25-26? :D

I will be on a YA Ask Me Anything panel with my fabulous agent Suzie Townsend along with fellow authors and New Leafers Mindee Arnett and Erica O’Rourke. You may have heard of them.

I’ve known Mindee since before she signed with Suzie, and guys, I still get star struck that we’re friends. And then there’s Erica, who is funny and talented and sweeter than pie. I adore her. I can’t wait to meet them in person...

Call for Questions

Every third Thursday at A Game of Tomes, we’ll be answering YOUR questions. So please submit them!

Anything related to fantasy, books, writing, and publishing is game. (lol… game…)

(Okay, that was bad. I shouldn’t be allowed on the internet.)

If you have a question specifically for one of us, that’s cool too! Just make sure to say so in your Ask. Otherwise, any one of us can end up answering your question :)

So to keep us from making sad faces at you, please submit your questions! ♥

What’s Up Wednesday 19

What I’m Reading

Finished OTHERBOUND by Corinne Duyvis this week. It’s AMAZING.

I loved every single thing about this book. The characters are fascinating and complex, and their growth and change is PHENOMENAL. The plot is twisty and thrilling and compelling. The world building is amazing and rich, and I want at least five more books set in the Dunelands.

Read this book at your earliest convenience. You will not regret it.

What I’m Writing

Editing a chapter a day on this sequel. Woot!

What Else I’...

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. I love all the creepy vintage photographs!

What I’m Writing

Finally figured out the ending to this sequel. I’m currently at 72k words. Please let this end soon so I can start editing!

What Else I’ve Been Up To

Already thinking about a different book I started a few weeks ago. Writing two books at once worked for a week until I hit a wall on the second one. But I’m anxious to get started again. And then to plot out a dark fantasy that’s been swirling ar...

What’s Up Wednesday 17

What I’m Reading

I recently finished UNHINGED by A.G. Howard.

Goodness, this book. Morpheus kills me. I love him to pieces, and I need the third book DESPERATELY.

What I’m Writing

I’m just about 65k words into this sequel. It’s still got a lot of words to go, which makes me very nervous. This is only a first draft, and I tend to double the word count of my first drafts when the book is nearing finished. I foresee a lot of cutting and condensing of scenes in this one :/

What Else I’ve Been Up To

The...
