Belle Rules of Regifting!

Hey y’all! I just heard that today was International RegiftingDay– which, of course, brought to minda helpful guideline I wrote on the subject in my last book, Sue Ellen’s Girl Ain’t Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy. In the event that you haven’t read that book, (and I will forgive you if this is so), I offer you those thoughts here as a little Merry Christmas post! Belle Rules of Regifting This may surprise you, but honestly, I don’t think regifting is necessarily synonymous with bad manners. The...

Is it possible to look at suffering without looking away?

And now there are two.Really? 30 Days of Thankfulness seemed likea long time when we launched our annual All Things Southern gratitude drive. Perhaps you meant to join us and you just haven’t gotten around to it. I understand. Here’s another opportunity. Perhaps you thought of joining us but the size and scope of all the needy people in the world paralyzed you. I get that, too. I know what it’s like to flip the channelbecause you just can’t look at one more starving child, or your heart simpl...

No Fail Christmas Fudge

Oh, boy, the first batch of No Fail Christmas Fudge is ready! Seriously, it doesn’t get easier. How about a one, two, three? One: Stir 3 cups semi-sweet chocolatechips, one can of sweetened condensed milk, and a scant teaspoon salt in saucepan. Heat on stove top just until chips melt, remove. Two: Stir in one teaspoon of vanilla and one cup of chopped pecans. Three: Pour into a square baking pan that’s lined with foil and refrigerate. Once it sets (hour and a half or so), turn the foil over o...

It’s Day 16 and I’m Grateful that Mercy Triumphs

It’s the 16th day of 30 Days of Thankfulness. I’m relishingthe notes of gratitude I see myfamily and friends posting here, there, andeverywhereand Ilove stumbling upon the words ofgratefulstrangers. Sweet, funny, poignant words, letters fromour laptops, strung togetheron our keyboards. When I see them, I hear James.I can’t help it. I seethe Lord’s brother everywhere right now and I hearhim in my head.

I’d say Blame in on Beth, as in Beth Moore, but that would sound like I’m holding this against...

Caution: These Words have Staying Power

Words that will stay with you on this 13th Day of 30 Days of Thankfulness from the blog of Kimberly L. Smith of Make Way Partners.

Hugs,

Shellie

As I write this, I am sitting in my favorite writing spot: my back porch. I hear the roar of a small plane buzzing just above our tree line, and I offer thanks that I do not have to hit the ground or take off running for cover. I acknowledge the fact that I am wealthy simply because I do not live in a war zone where bomber planes terrorize me or threate...

If parties, presidents, and politics could educate, legislate, and eradicate…

I wrote these words Wednesday morning, “An Open Letter to Both Sides of the Fence on this 7th Morning of 30 Days of Thankfulness.” More thoughts as the punditry continues:

If parties, presidents, and politics

could educate, legislate, and eradicate

hate, poverty, and crime

well-meaning moral men would’ve long done so.

The only Man with theanswer

didn’t run for office

because He’s already enthroned.

”And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me,” John 12:32

An Open Letter to Both Sides of the Fence on this 7th Morning of 30 Days of Thankfulness

To my fellow Americans
A wise person once said thatfences make good neighbors and surely there’sa lot oftruth in the adage, but perhaps it’d be wiser if weremembered thatgates make friends. I respectfully offer three thoughts for all of usthat could build a few aswe move forward.
Please be gracious in victory. A divided nation needs it.
I didn’t vote with you but I’ll look for every opportunity to unite with you.
Don’t try to convince me why you were right, put your hand to the plow and prove it...
