The Rest of Mercy’s Story

I knew I would have to tell y’all. I thought I’d waited long enough that I might be able to do it without crying. I was wrong. Again.


Last Sunday I flew home from Georgia and landed in Monroe, LA. My first stop on the drive home from the airport was Highway 2. We have a saying in the South, “He oughta be shamed to his knees.” The observation is made of someone who has made choices that seem to have embarrassed everyone but the one making them. Have Mercy, Won’t You Stay?

By the time I finished praying, it was later than usual. I hated the idea of missing my morning kayak ride on Lake Providence, but it seemed like the smart thing to do. As much as I love starting the day on the water, the sun was climbing higher in the sky and my mind was already making a list of everything that needed to be accomplished before it set again. It made much more sense to head to the shower, but I felt strongly drawn to the dock, almost compelled.
