Brought out the telescope the other night and was instantly and beautifully reminded just how big this universe is, how small we are, how perfectly tiny and fragile in the face of so much night. Stuck my silly little iPhone up to the eyepiece and snapped this photo and felt a wash of overwhelmed gratitude for this life, and was reminded of my favorite scene in my favorite movie, Joe Vs. The Volcano, when Joe, on the edge of death, looks to the moon and says, “Dear god, whose name I do not know, thank you for my life. I forgot how BIG, thank you. Thank you for my life.”

A photo before you were anything else,
an idea made tangible, the manifestation
of hope made two dimensional.
Carried you with me, everywhere,
and I say now it was adventure
that nurtured you, kept you safe
despite the winds.
