Canyons between us,
acres on acres of divide
of glen, of hours and sting
oh were I a bird, winged
and slight,
a feathered thing to catch
some thermal and be
carried to you.
Can we fill that place,
that valley we
shouted across
with all those
blind to this,
can we let our voices
dance above them,
tangled and entwined?
Can theirs become garbled
and din, vanish into
the white noise of stream,
of river?
Somewhere, miles above the
sound of water,
the bridge we built,
never again will I wish
for wings.

Claimed, we called it, though I was yours
and you mine long before, from the start,
pieces of the same stardust
separated by explosion, but brought back.
If there is magnetism, it is this.
Did you dream me into existence,
am I stitched from sleeping stories,
filled with some quiet hope you didn’t
dare whisper into the universe?
Perhaps it heard, perhaps it pulled
over gravity and dark,
perhaps if there is magnetism,
it is this.
We leave behind pieces as we go,
torn from ourselves, against the
pull, pieces in places and
in this perforation,
we feel whole.
We are what we choose to keep,
the family born from choice,
we are what we aim for and
we are what we hold on to,
we are some beautiful intention
that is stronger than any
accident of blood.
Where you go,
I will go,
and this is all I know
of joy.

Some stand in the storms
and sob at their soaking,
some scream at the clouds
demand sunlight and shine,
some scramble for umbrella
and complain of the winds that
buckle them.
Some strip down
in the torrent, some
lift their palms to the sky
and throw their head back
wearing laughter
and little else.
Some sing to the sound
of raindrops,
some shelter others
from the thunder.
You, the light seeker
though the day is grey,
you the shade
for those sought by downpour
and soak,
you the steady hands when
all the world is shaking.
Some stand in storms
and sob at their soaking,
some dance, and splash
in the puddles.
