Social media most often feels like pissing into the wind, like a shout into this empty space. You create, you pour yourself into the art you choose, and you wonder if it will land anywhere, with anyone. Some do, some that you’re most proud of, stay hidden from the majority of people that choose to follow you. As things have slowed down here on this little piece of the internet, it’s easy to get discouraged and wonder why other poets, other photographers, see such massive growth and success while I, or you, do not. It’s easy to question whether or not you should start selling out and customizing your art to fit the fleeting whims of a ridiculous social network, an algorithm, a phantom idea of followers or hashtags or metrics. Last night I hit a wall of absolute and total Done-ness. I just don’t fucking care anymore, truth told. I will never change, the art I make is the art I must make, it is why I am here. I am done thinking about analytics and timing posts and wondering why I lose more followers than I gain, I am done wondering what that means for my career, for my ability to support a family. I am just going to make things, as I always have, and send it out into the world in case anyone, anywhere, needs to see it. (at Lower Largo Beach)

Loved
despite the atrocities
(is it dramatic to call them
that, these failures?)
I have committed.
You’re here, still
(was there ever doubt?)
and have seen the dark
side of this moon I call
myself.

Debt, I call it
(I’ve not enough to repay,
I’ll never have)
and drop to knees
(is my head bowed
low enough?)
on the floor of this
room.

My lips still whisper

about the last time we kissed,

I’m not promising every day will be easy, every road smooth, I’m promising I’ll keep going. I’ll keep fighting for you, with you if you’re being a pain in the ass, and infuse every word I say with more respect and love than you’ve ever felt. To hell with anything but real love, to hell with the smooth roads, I love you with grit and smoke, fire and hope. (at Glencoe, Highlands, Scotland)

I could be giving you cliche,
you know this right?
I could regurgitate borrowed words
from stolen poetry,
package it up pretty and
convince you it’s wisdom.
I could cut these down,
give you tight and trite
and cash in, I could aim
for the instant gratification,
the lazy or the bored, I could
hide behind them, call them
art and watch the bank account
swell, call you fans instead
of followers, praise you for
your dedication to the
carefully crafted nothing
that I give you, the crumbs from
the table swept aside with
irreverent hand.  I could tell you
you’re wild and you’re free
and you’re a Paris and wine
kind of person while your eyes
float by, I could call myself poet,
call myself artist, while bundling
up these banalities, but really
what’s the point?
