Home. Has been for far longer than it hasn’t, and will be soon for those who will love it as much as we do. What a place, Helena. What a magic spot. (at Helena, Montana)

Lit by death, we are,
illuminated
by the silent passing
of six billion stars.
The cemetery above us,
the glistening graveyard filled
with tombstones of light.

Sadness has a scent,
only some can smell it.
Rain on a firework smoke,
sparkler in a snowstorm.

Maybe when we go,
we still shine on those
left behind,
maybe it’s years of
illumination,
maybe they lift their
eyes to us,
maybe for a moment,
they too
catch the aroma
on the
breeze.

Sometimes I take photographs that don’t feel real, that take my breath away and make me feel little pangs of magic and mystery and the electric tingle of possibility. With a muse like this one, those moments occur more often. I am always trying to catch my breath. (at Buachaille Etive Mòr)

Here, a hymn to the knock about,
the meander we called life.
Listen to the chorus of wildflowers
as they find their way to light,
the sadness in the thunderstorm,
and wonder in the swallow
that dives and during its hunt,
sings.

Take the pieces of our escapades,
the jackdaw feathers left
like offering at the foot of ruin,
stones that marked the paths
we walked, take the
crumbs of shortbread on napkins
folded, the tea stain on t-shirt,
take the thistle thorns
in sock and shoe.

This the vagabonds elegy,
the requiem for what is lost
but will one day return.  We
are the sound of untorn ticket stubs
and train whistles silent, we
are the empty pockets
where full hands once rest,
we are the stillness lamenting
the bustle, the longing lust
for a life of wander.

Been thinking about belief today, about faith in general, about how believing in something, in anything, is so fundamentally important in my opinion. Thousands of years ago, staring up at the stars, we humans started coming up with stories for why things were they way they were, and in these tales they found comfort. Still today, we do the same. In times of emptiness and sorrow, these beliefs, this faith, makes us feel remembered, protected, safe. I have been Buddhist since I was about 12 or 13, and my faith lives here, in the thought of reincarnation, coming back and starting new. Whatever you choose to believe, be it god or gods, spiritual guides, unicorns, or Jesus on a cross, I hope you find peace in it, I hope it soothes you. We are all staring at the same stars, we are all telling our own stories, I just hope you’re telling one that makes sense of all the darkness. (at Grasmere)
