Is it lost if we’re
together,
if we plant roots,
call it home and
let the leaves cover
us?

Is it lost if we stop
asking to be found,
if we stumble
into one another
time and time again,
if I whisper
to the stars, to the
satellites we mistake
as them,
that I need little,
little,
but I need you?

You breathe,
I listen.

Somehow,
I understand
all there is
to understand.

There is emptiness,

and there’s you walking away.

I would choose the first.

White man with an axe
Swinging at men like they
Are firewood.
Calm down, said they,
it’s ok, it’s ok.
Cops never even reached
For their guns.

Black man on a jog,
chased down like hare,
like quarry for the
camouflaged Confederates,
calling themselves law.
No one bothered to tell them
they lost the war.

White man with assault rifle,
talked down like child,
painted in the press as
Mentally Ill, sick and in need of help.
Gently they held his hands
behind his back,
watch your head, said they
before closing the door.

Black man with cell phone
made perforated
by itchy trigger finger and
inferiority complex,
he matched a description,
said they, as badges and
pistols were handed back.
Shine your medals, let them
catch the sun.

Slavery never disappeared,
it was just marketed better,
handcuffs in place of chains,
penal system as plantation,
still they fear the whip,
still they cower.

I am ashamed
of the color of my
skin.

Shadows or sunbeams,

we are still chasing the light.

We will never slow.

Even in times of social distancing, times of quarantine and worry, times of stress and the anxiety of illness, there is love. There is always love, even if it’s threatened by such darkness, even if it barely fits between layers of night, it is there. (at Helena, Montana)

Beneath the bulbs,
I waited for you.
I swear now, when the
film of this story plays,
our story, we will ask,
Wasn’t it always our names
on the marquee?

You waited,
and this was love
to me.
Bravery
is a stare into emptiness,
a refusal to turn
away.

I saw you
and I knew,
call this cinematic if
you wish,
I call it truth,
and I stick to it.

Under bulb bare
and shining
I took you by the hand
and led you into
the dark.
It was always our names
on the marquee.
