I wonder often this, wonder it when sleepy, when bored, when elated by a life shared. I wonder it when she’s baking, laughing, wandering through a forest. I wonder it when making love, when fighting about something so inconsequential you can only laugh of it the next day. I wonder it, and probably always will.
.
Explain it slower,
I don’t understand your love
or how I’ve earned it.

A thought: what if we went through our lives assuming everyone we meet, see, or interact with, had it worse than us? That they were fighting such intense battles in their lives, that they needed our compassion like air? What good would grow from this seed? What lives would be changed?

Wonder how many
carry weights they cannot hold,
just waiting to break.

I often feel like I am a runaway train, bounced off rail and hurtling down some mountainside. I feel like I have cars full of people that depend on me to get them where I am goin, if only I could get back on track.
.
I’m a train off rail,
rusty rattling through life
hoping the brakes work.

More shaped by fire than anything else, by strife than joy. We forget our endurance, forget what we can survive, forget that real life exists beyond simply surviving.

Flame born,
I call myself,
patched with ash
and the residue of
who I was.
Risen,
as though the heat
carried me.
All fight for life,
though few
risk all for the
thriving,
the deep drink from
the well of days,
throat cooled
where it only knew
smoke.
I breathe water
like air
and have yet to
call myself
quenched.
I seek the answers,
the buried magic
in all that pulses
just beyond
surviving.

It’s been a season of introspection, and it will continue to be as winter has arrived. I have realized I can be more, better, more patient and understanding. I can be more positive, more hopeful, and more open to seeing and holding peace. It’s hard fighting the battles inside ourselves, hard defeating some demons, but as long as we keep trying, we’re still in it.
.
Daily I realize
I can be a better man,
I can do much more.
