I’ve started apologizing to animals,
no deep bow or prostration upon the earth
before them, but I stop for a breath,
face the eyes, suspicious for good reason,
and offer up a dozen times

We know nothing,
infants fumbling over our feet,
destructors of what we do not understand,
untranslatable screams for what we want,
taking until there is nothing left to take
then demanding more.
These are hungers that cannot be fed,
thirsts that stay unquenched as water levels
rise, as starvation dances with exhaustion
and ends species here long before
we.

This is what I see when I am working, this is the graceful, calm, kind, irrationally beautiful woman I follow into our weddings, our photoshoots, our adventures. This beacon of light and hope and joy. This is not work, when I am with her, this is lucky wandering, this is peace. I am convinced that it’s this feeling, that helps create the art we do when we photograph people, that allows us the space within ourselves to show the people we are photographing themselves, often for the first time. All their beauty, all their light.
