Only what’s real,
what’s torn and ripped
from the pieces of me
I don’t know the ways
to hide.  Only what’s true,
what’s been earned by ache
and sorrow and some form
of unrestrained joy that came
after I learned all there is
of longing.  
Take the bite size and saccharine
slop and set it alight,
burn it down and use the ash
to write something honest,
something worth it, something
that hits like a fist and stays
like a promise.  
What are we here for if not this,
why bother if it’s not
stained in our
blood?
