If pain is a cleansing thing
then I am baptized, new,
then I am fresh
and unadorned
for you.
Some hands are healing ones,
place themselves on
the surfaces of our scars
and send out soothing
in waves, in pulsations
of stillness. I feel your skin
on the raised flesh of me
and a quiet comes.
If pain is a cleansing thing,
then consider me infant,
newborn, staring at you
with eyes soaked in salvation,
in devotion.
Tomorrow, more than today,
and now, miles from
all I carried for you
yesterday.

Of all things beautiful
I am made to notice,
to celebrate
and call out in verse
in song in breath.
In ordinary things,
in the art of
the unappreciated,
the simple sound of hours
passing, of
stars shining though
long since extinguished.
I am only here
for this, put here to see,
to choke out what
was seen, to try
my very best, to put
fingertip to eyeball
and ever so gently

Family grows from roots
though often
from seeds fallen
out of new hands, fresh
off the shaking.
Look at the bloom
visible from miles off,
blanket of color on landscape
dull and unassuming,
breathe the scent,
carried across a continent
on the backs of wind
and storm.
This is family,
chosen and granted
by wishes never made,
indivisible
and strong.
