Stumbled on this photo, taken with an old 35mm on timer in the winter of 1998-1999, and it shook me to my core. Standing with me is one of the best friends I ever had, Georg, who was an exchange student from Sweden my senior year of high school. This moment, this frozen flash of time where my hands weren’t even around his shoulders from rushing back to be in the shot, this stolen second, shook me for how fresh we were, how young and teetering on the edge of the rest of our lives. We had no idea then, standing there after some frozen hike, that 20 some years later he wouldn’t be here anymore. That he would pass away in the bathroom stall of a Stockholm restaurant. That we would only see each other a handful of times spaced out over two decades, but love each other the same. We had no idea we would be in the backyard of the house I would one day call home. No idea of the pain and the joy that would come, no idea he would be a husband, a father, that he would leave us behind aching for more, to rewind time and hug him again. This frozen moment, this whisper where he and I and my dog Clancy were all captured hanging between worlds, those we walked through, those we would, those beyond this one that I will one day meet him in…I treasure it. Life is fleeting and fragile and stunning in its imperfection, we never know, we never have any idea what’s coming for us. All we can do is wake up each day and surround ourselves with those that make us better, more, and give away all the kindness we can muster. I miss you buddy, I have never stopped missing you. Thank you for the time you gave me. See you soon.

Some spin earth, brown and raw
into cup, into bowl and vase,
shape it into statue
into bust of bronze.
Some mix color, match it
to sky or sea, purple of
plum or the orange of
sunrise, so bright its alive,
some paint and in swirl
bring life.
Some open mouths
and melody drips like honey
from a tongue built
to give shape to sorrow,
or joy, to fill a room with sound
and know the ways
to raise skin in shiver
and awe.
I sit, and in between long
glances out tall windows,
write short nothings
that won’t stop clouding
my mind. I rain, and rain,
and only when the storm has
passed, rise
and smell the air.

Throwback to some random day with @gregoryalanisakov and the lads. I think maybe in NYC. Or maybe Missoula. I forget. The haze of time clouds all things. Now there’s a Grammy nomination and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

If chance was given, another path
or attempt at this thing,
would you keep it
this way?
Was I worth the ache, to you,
the teardrops into bathtubs,
or red cheeked frustration,
was the scale of this love
worth those that would not
climb it?
Truth is an anchoring thing,
holds us to the earth
when the gales come to
toss us aside, and one,
above all others,
keeps us planted where we
deserve to grow:
I will love you with all
I will ever be,
and nothing will ever
stop that.
