A final character swerve is with Mary. She is primed to be an excellent villain. In “The Empty Hearse,” she uses the exact same phrase on John that Charles Magnussen later would: “You should have that on a t-shirt.” Since the universe rarely offers such coincidence, it seems an omen. When we learn that she is actually a trained assassin who chooses to shoot Sherlock in the chest instead of simply talking to him, she ups the stakes. Then, in “The Abominable Bride,” we get the suggestion that she’s secretly working for Mycroft and might have other shady dealings yet to be revealed.
“The Six Thatchers” drags Mary’s AGRA past to the forefront. When the betrayal of her team resurfaces for her, she drugs Sherlock and goes on the run again, not giving her husband more than a note of good-bye. Bizarrely, though, we are to believe that Mary redeems herself with her leap in front of Sherlock. Good as it may have been, with that single act, she becomes an elevated martyr; she abruptly turns from self-serving stealth agent to self-sacrificing saint. There is no arc to the redemption. We do not get to see her lay a path to forgiveness, change her ways through her consistent behavior, earn our love. She simply “gave herself permission to have an ordinary life,” and when that didn’t seem to work out, she took off, not wanting John and Sherlock “hanging off her gun arm,” only returning when she’s tracked down by the duo and the other surviving member of her team. Despite this, taking the bullet in the aquarium wiped her slate clean.
It is even more difficult to swallow that Mary then becomes the voice that instructs John and Sherlock how to behave. Mary never seemed to treat John with much respect, let alone to know the inner workings of John’s heart; Sherlock is the one who loves John more than anyone (if we take the fact that he never once considers shooting John over Mycroft in “The Final Problem”) and can predict John’s behavior weeks out, so why is Mary the one offering the infomercial on how John operates internally? It is believable for Mrs. Hudson to throw the boys back together—she’s lived with them, cares for them as her own sons, and truly wants them to be happy. But Mary has not fairly achieved that right.
And Mary certainly did not earn the last word of the series in which she blithely informs John and Sherlock that she knows “who you really are…but who you really are doesn’t matter.” In a show that has billed itself not as a detective story, but as a story about a detective, how could that ever be true? If she tells them (and the audience) to focus only on the adventures and not the men behind the myth, then we all will have missed the very point of this entire show.

Good god
Trump’s press is lying and trying to say it was the most highly attended inauguration ever. Don’t take it standing down. Post these pictures everywhere.

When...
When anyone tries to argue that it wasn’t queerbaiting, because Mofftiss told numerous times that John and sherlock will never be together or it was never a love story..You know what Mofftiss sounds like?
It sounds like telling the entire world that you don’t intend selling potatoes but you actually have a multi-million dollar industry which sells potato crisps.
They also told us that they lie. They said it repeatedly, that they lie about plot points, they lie about the show, they lie about everything.
So why are we being blamed for not believing men who make a big fuss about how much they lie, when the text itself is giving the lie to their words?
“I’m not eating the cake,” he says, with a mouthful of cake. “Absolutely no cake here, none at all.” Crumbs spray everywhere, but there is no cake. The cake is a lie.
re: the Cambridge Q&A. They literally contradicted what they have claimed last week in other interviews. They literally negated the whole point of Sherlock’s human development when they said that Sherlock patronizes people and solve cases.
They’re like bad politicians.
Yeah they said it was never intended to be a love story ?When they literally advertised the “I love you” and “Sherlock Holmes is in love.” . This is like the worst kind of baiting to ever exist.
And negating the human development…. Good lord..I mean do Mofftiss even hear themselves?
I used to think they were lying to hide the real story but nope turns out they don’t have a clue what they’re doing and will just answer the first thing that comes to mind
Post Mortem
I didn’t sleep much last night, in fact not slept much since the BFI screening to be honest, and at 4am I decided to play Devil’s Advocate and look at how we all ended up here. Not my interpretation of the show, but as an observer, tried to be as removed as a life long Holmesian I can be. Granted I cannot separate my own bias, so a clinical analyse cannot be really done. My aim is not to defend anyone nor to attack. So let’s have a go at it anyway. Under the cut as it’s long:
Yes to all this. Thank you.

No one...
No one will ever convince me that Martin and Ben weren’t consciously, deliberately playing two men deeply in love, every moment of every episode.

well either that or freebatch is actually real
I think it is real, actually, but as much as I joke about it being one or the other, I really believe they’re both amazingly good precise actors and could have acted simple friendship without any real feelings seeping through. They’re professionals. Every microexpression is intentional. The line always was either they’re terrible actors and freebatch is real, or johnlock is real. They’re not terrible actors.
True. But also, the director and the writers on the set can damn well see that sort of thing on screen as the scene is being recorded and if they didn’t like it, they’d ask the actors to do it differently. That’s their job–to get the “read” on film. And when the editor and director are working on a final cut, they choose which take to use. All of those people were well aware of the chemistry and homoeroticism – they chose for it to come across like that. As in that interview with Mark, he liked the homoeroticism of it. But for some reason he is totally against it becoming text. Why? That’s a very good question.
