True.
The Importance of TJLC and canon Johnlock
Just a few reasons why TJLC is real and why it matters that we get canon Johnlock. (They’re not in any particular order.)
Because gay men in their seventies like my own uncle, who grew up in one of the most repressive contexts imaginable - the Spain of Franco -, people who found solace in the ACD canon and the Holmesian pastiches, deserve to see canon Johnlock before they die.
Because bi people like me need a character like John Watson; we are tired of bisexual characters being shallow sex maniacs, false romantic leads, and/or comedic devices. We need someone like John Watson, someone with a strong moral compass, being open about his sexuality and living happily with the love of his life.
Because we need a gay hero that doesn’t die alone tragically.
Because canon Johnlock will be a blow in the guts of heteronormativity.
Because Holmes and Watson have been waiting since the late 19th century, and they’re tired.
Because showing John and Sherlock happy and in love is a way of avenging Oscar Wilde.
Because Federico García Lorca will applaud from gay heaven when they finally kiss.
Because canon Johnlock may actually save lives.
Because this is the 21th century.
Because we may be unable to change some things, but we can change the mistaken perception of the world regarding our heroes.
Because there’s always two of them.

Excellent stuff here. All I can say is that my two gay Dad’s didn’t live to see the day that Holmes and Watson finally came out as a couple on the world stage, I have to do that for them. We need iconic characters that represent us as fully human, not a trope to fit into a constricted expectation. I truly believe it’s about to occur in our show; written with insight and brilliance, plus acted with respect and talent.
@byebyefrost this is gorgeous. @welovethebeekeeper your addition brought me to tears.
Yes, to all of the above, YES!
I would just add that if they don’t do this now, that they will have missed their moment; they will have missed their opportunity to make history. Things are changing so rapidly, and despite still having a long way to go, creators are getting much, much better at representation. If our dads don’t do this now, it will be a tragic waste of everything they’ve laboured to set up in the series so far, and a huge misstep imo.
Exactly what May said! Their approach has ALREADY influenced and inspired numerous other storytellers, including the writers of Broadchurch, London Spy, and even Star Wars. They always said that if they didnt write it, someone else would do it first….and that might actually happen if they don’t finish by the end of 2018.
This is very true and very scary. Shows like London Spy are already going where BBC Sherlock should have been the first to go. I really hope they make it clear in S4 because God knows when we’ll get S5 and soon the opportunity to really be shocking and fresh and new will be gone.
Why Johnlock won’t happen in BBC Sherlock
So,
I’m a Sherlock fan since the show aired in 2010 and I recently
discovered Tumblr. And wow. I was gobsmacked by the great amount of
theories and metas about the show, especially related to the
relationship between John and Sherlock and “The Johnlock Conspiracy”.
Now, I want to say something: I have no opposition whatsoever about the
possibility of them being together, but I’m also convinced that they
won’t become a couple in the show. Why?
1. A lot of people say
Sherlock is gay but c’mon. Moffat and Gatiss let Irene Adler mess
with his mind and heart, and he clearly feels something for her. I’m
sorry to say this, but you’re kind of delusional if you think that a
character like The Woman, who was Sherlock Holmes’ main love interest in
past versions like the Ritchie movies or Elementary, wouldn’t play an
important part in Sherlock’s love life in the BBC Version. In fact,
Moffat and Gatiss always remind us of her presence; she was in
Sherlock’s mind palace in The Sign Of Three, Magnussen listed her as one
of Sherlock’s pressure points, Sherlock himself knows that she will cry
if he died (His Last Vow), and her picture was in Sherlock’s pocket
watch in The Abominable Bride. If that’s not enough, let’s talk about
Molly Hooper, then, who’s a nice, sweet, smart girl, in love with Sherlock
since episode 1. Their relationship is progressing season by season, he
trusts her and respects her and she’s obviously not over him (and it
seems like she never will) and I think they will be canon by the end of
the series.
2. Queerbaiting is a very common thing these days.
It’s terrible and I agree, but the majority of showrunners don’t care
about it 99% of the time. Just look at some other shows, like
Supernatural. They keep beating the Destiel horse because they know that
pair will bring them ratings and money. And that’s the same thing
that’s happening in Sherlock. And when the show will be over, Moffat and
Gatiss will get away with it, saying something like “some people read too much into it”. Mark my words.
3.
The general audience’s response to Johnlock may not be positive and
that would be a downfall for the series. It doesn’t matter if, I don’t
know, 1000 people or so on Tumblr want it to happen. At the end of the
day, the general audience is what matters the most.
4. John is now
married and he’s gonna be a father. He forgave his wife for shooting
Sherlock - which could be the way the writers are telling us that John
really loves Mary and he’s willing to make things work with her - so I
don’t know why would he leave her now, since he already forgave her. And
yes, I believe the forgiveness was real. I mean, Sherlock asked John if he
wanted his wife to be safe and John’s answer was “yes” and he held hands
with her on the tarmac while Sherlock was going to his death. Would you do that if you hated someone? He let
Sherlock going away. He chose Mary, again.
5.
If Moffat and Gatiss wanted Sherlock and John to be a couple, they would
have clarified the mutual interest towards each other from the
beginning in a blatant way without recurring to some kind of subtext
trick or whatever.
I know a lot of people ship Johnlock and
expect it to become canon because the show wouldn’t make any sense
otherwise. But believe you me, as long as it makes sense to the writers,
everything is possible.

John knows about Mary wanted kill Sherlock.
The main level of TAB is about things which Sherlock has in his mind including his thoughts and opinions to John. Also about his recognition that John is actualy damn smart. But on another level there was lot of stuff by creators, which works as help for us. And one of the most important things there could be fact that John realy is smart and we shouldn’t underestimate him!
Next series is going to be from John’s point of view (probably) and so it was very important for them to show us everything he is capable of.
TAB isn’t only about Sherlock thinking John is smart. TAB is also about how we should think just the same.
And what seems very interesting to me here is how they present his medical skills. Actually more than twice:
1) John is correcting Sherlock’s diagnose about Lestrade
2) John is finding that Emilia was dying
3) John is browsing dead body of sir Eustace
4) John is revealing to everyone that Emilia was nearly to death anyway.
![]()
What is even more interesting he plays like he knows less, than he truly knows. And in this scene creators are alerting on it.
,,Isn’t he observant now that Dady’s gone!”
Well… he is happy to play the fool for him…
When we look at this new one episode, there is lots of thoughts about how clever John is and how good doctor he is.
And yes. John damn is.
So I was thinking about how is even possible, that he didn’t find out, Sherlock nearly died. Or, to be more accurate, realy died for a while. He was with him since a moment he found him in coma.
He was in an ambulance with him!
![]()
(and knew very well what was happening around them).
![]()
,,We’re losing you, Sherlock!”
![]()
He was all night in a hospital. He had to speak with doctor, who operated him. He probably was with Sherlock, when he woke up…And mainly he isn’t an idiot. He is a doctor too. A very good doctor. Which is a thing he said to Sherlock very next day after they met.
So what creators showed us in TAB?
John is a good doctor who just pretends not being so good. Specialy for Sherlock’s eyes. While episode continues he knows that Emilia was dying, but keeps this information just for himself until end. When finaly tells everyone that Emilia was dying and he knew it ( as well as he knew that Molly was a woman. ) Sherlock seems to be suprised. And at the end John saves him from Moriarty. So that is what were creators telling to us.
![]()
Oh yes, one more again :D Pretty damn smart! :3
![]()
And here is my new point for real John:
John knew, that he nearly lost Sherlock again. And it was just something what he wouldn’t forgive to anyone. Neither his own wife. Specialy her. Because she saw how broken he was after Sherlock’s death before. From that moment he never gives her honestly kind face again. I mean… if he knew, then would simply couldn’t. And that is exactly how he looks rest of the episode His Last Vow:
![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
He was so angry while Sherlock persuaded him that Mary is from that moment their client. But Sherlock had to have some reason for that, didn’t he?
“Always your way.”
![]()
You know…. This scene reminds me another one!
![]()
It is I am happy to play a fool for you scene.
John is practicaly saying that he will play his game, even if he knows the truth.
Like maybe that he will pretend he believes his spiel about how Mary saved his life, even though it’s bullshit. He’ll keep doing what seems Sherlock want from John. With a hope that his friend has a some good plan.
Actualy when I re watched His Last Vow John realy looks he knows all the fucking time that Sherlock almost died. He realy looks he knows that Mary wanted to kill him. And he’s not only angry with her. He hates her.
Just look at him, to his face when Sherlock is trying to convince him, that Mary is just a client who needs a help!
![]()
![]()
Or here, where Sherlock was claiming she saved his life:
![]()
WHAT?!
He just… knows it.
Oh, I love this! It all makes perfect sense! Of course John is smart enough to know by now that Sherlock always has a plan, so when Sherlock INSISTS that they MUST trust Mary, he knows he’s got to go along with it, or things will get bad, fast. He can also see that Mary is clever as shit, so he can’t let on how he really feels about her, even a tiny bit, or Sherlock could die for real. He’s furious with her, but he trusts Sherlock absolutely, so he’s playing along.
Yes! Mark and Steven are sending a clear message. John knows far more than Sherlock realises. John has more agency than Sherlock realises. And…here is the bit I love the most: John knows more than the viewers realise. It’s the rug pull. The writers are good, they had me fooled for a few weeks post S3, many others actually aborted the fandom because of it. John Watson was being shown via Sherlock and it made us all as confused about John as Sherlock is. TAB addressed it. John has a lot going on. This is the man in S2 that marched into the Diogenes and gave Mycroft shit for the handling of Moriarty. Then marched out of the Diogenes pissed and intent on saving Sherlock himself. This John is S4 John. I bet you.
[Oh, a side note; how many of us have acted dumb, or less intelligent, for the person we are in love with? It’s one of those little gifts you bestow on a loved one. We know it makes them feel good. John has been bestowing those gifts on Sherlock all along. Not to say Sherlock isn’t a genius, as he is, but John’s pretty damn smart too, and so does grant Sherlock room to show off.]
Yes, this drove me fucking batshit after HLV–the idea that John, A DOCTOR, would have not known that Sherlock died, would not be aware very precisely of how fatal that shot was (if not for a miraculous recovery Sherlock would be dead). That he would then buy Sherlock’s ‘it was surgery’ comment and forgive Mary was so horribly illogical and OOC! That’s why I have to believe John secretly has a plan and his own agenda. Otherwise, the story just makes no sense.
I won’t honestly be comfortable watching the show again until John shows his hand. I feel like I’m watching through my fingers, hands over my face in horror waiting for the universe to right itself.
Musing on a Water meta
I know many of us are working on cracking this one, jus like we did with the tea metaphor, so wanted to post my thoughts in order to add to the endeavour. To be honest I am tired of looking at it. Water is all over the series. Here is where I am at this point:
Rain = In S1 & 2 rain is present when John is called out on his feelings for Sherlock:
Wet floor, post rain, in the meeting with Mycroft at the warehouse in ASiP, Mycroft questions the instant attraction and bonding, hints at it being romantic.
Snow [frozen rain] all the way through the Xmas scenes in ASiB where John is jealous over Sherlock and Irene. Melted snow on ground as he enters Battersea and the confrontation with Irene who calls him out on his relationship with Sherlock
Rain as John meets with Mycroft in ASiB at Speedy’s and they discuss Sherlock’s emotions, and again Mycroft tries to draw John out on his true feelings for Sherlock. John is drenched in this scene, he is so in love by now, that he stops dating after this.
Rain as John is called out on his true feelings for Sherlock by Ella post the fall. But here is where I started to get crazy because if the above rain/snow is a metaphor for John’s repressed feelings for Sherlock and he is being asked to face them, then there should be rain at the scene when John goes to Sherlock’s grave!! However, I realised the scene is different, as John confronts his own feelings, allows himself to cry. In the other scenes he is being challenged by others.
Season 3 is from Sherlock’s perspective and we don’t get the rain/snow metaphor as we move to a different vehicle when viewing Sherlock’s hidden emotions.
As in the tea metaphor which cascaded into a beverage metaphor, the rain metaphor then led me to water in general.
The Waters Family = The primer. The family are criminal and appear to evade the law. I think Water equals crime and criminals.
Myrcroft = The Iceman; frozen, cold, hard, incased in protocol and the British Government. His knowledge and access is far reaching, he KNOWS about crimes and criminals, but manipulates them to his own advantage. He can melt, however, and may do so if the heat is on his little brother which will be his downfall. The Umbrella; protection from water, he carries it wherever he goes. Protection is part of his power/armour, his position puts him, and those he loves, above the law. I believe in M-theory, and do think Mycroft is under Moriarty’s thumb, so he’s committing crimes within the auspices of government.
Moriarty = Rich Brook. A brook is a shallow body of water fed by a spring or a source. It’s at the start of the river’s journey, almost the genesis, Moriarty initiates crime, facilitates it, yet remains slow, shallow. Brooks have stones, they babble. Our Moriarty certainly verbally babbles.
CAM = He sweats; he leaks perspiration just as he leaks knowledge, he is a blackmailer. He controls his world by knowing about crimes, just like Mycroft, but they are opposites; Mycroft frozen keeping secrets in his role as the British Government, CAM leaking secrets via his newspaper.
Mary = Wet Jobs; she’s up to her eyes in assassinations. Then we have the water fowl metaphor.
Sherlock = Ugly Duckling, his code name from The British Government. A duckling paddles away on the surface of the water, following it’s Mother [Mycroft; a whole childhood in a nutshell] Sherlock solves crimes but only makes little ripples in the great scheme of things in his work as consulting detective. But the original Ugly Duckling tale is really about a cygnet, mistaken for a duckling, and the cygnet grows into a beautiful swan. Sherlock has started to become a swan, we are seeing Sherlock become more; evolving into that ‘Good’ man. Mycroft protects him and so far has kept Sherlock safe [all swans in the UK are protected by Royal order and free to roam under protection of the crown] I feel that Mother Duck will need to be sacrificed in order for this swan to fulfil his full potential. And of course, our Sherlock is a black swan, he mates for life with another male. The whole arc of BBC Sherlock in a code name.
[They even have a red bill; the button hole?]
Reposting due to the water clues we are getting from setlock 4.
