Setlock Recap, 5.27.16
Parking suspensions were issued for North Gower Street on June 11 - 13. This isn’t confirmed to be for Sherlock, but it is quite likely.
Jeremy DeCoursey (locations) tweeted that he’ll no longer be working on Sherlock, so if any location tweets appear from him after this, they won’t be setlock-related.
We were back at Windsor Drive in Miskin for the fourth day in a row.
All the vehicles were gone from the front of the house, but that’s likely irrelevant as filming took place inside, possibly in a room at the back of the house facing the garden, as they’ve set up a large daylight lamp behind the garden. Amanda and Martin were both spotted in the same costumes they’ve been in all week. Mark spent a little time possibly filming a behind-the-scenes video (and wearing amazingly orange socks). A double for Ben also seemed to be on-hand, but it’s unclear if he was involved in any filming then. Reportedly, the mystery actress (possibly named Sian) was also seen leaving the house at lunch. (More pics here)
The next segment of filming again took place inside the house. Martin appeared in a new costume–a black shirt, dark jeans, and his Haversack coat. Filming seemed to involve only Martin and the mystery actress, who was dressed in a beige/rose dressing gown. During this segment, the Aston Martin was parked outside again, in a different place than it was previously, but as filming was inside, its location is likely irrelevant. (More pics here [the first two in the set are from this portion of the day])
Loo tweeted that she would be filming today, and she arrived for the final portion of filming, wearing the costume her double was seen in yesterday. Amanda, Una, Ben, and the limo driver also arrived in the same costumes from the rest of the week, including the dressing gown for Ben, and at some point Martin changed back into his costume from the rest of the week as well. The limo, Aston Martin, and ambulance were put back in the same places they were yesterday afternoon, setting everything up for a repeat of that sequence. The mystery actress in the dressing gown supposedly left before filming of the sequence began. The scene was filmed again much as it was described yesterday. Molly is at the door, which John answers. John speaks to both her and someone else inside the house, loudly saying “No, I don’t care [how/now].” Sherlock comes out, says something to Molly about his coat, crosses the street, and climbs into the back of the ambulance, where his coat had apparently been placed before filming began. Molly and John continue to speak, with John supposedly saying something about “two weeks ago,” before she eventually heads to the ambulance as well. John then turns and speaks to someone else in the doorway, reportedly Mrs Hudson, who says, “Anytime, just ask.” Then John exits the house, hesitates, turns and walks back to the door to speak some more to someone inside, then turns again and walks, haltingly, toward the limo, where the chauffeur is opening the door for him–John’s entire demeanor during this is tense, and there is a lot of hand-clenching happening. (Video of the full sequence here)
Mark gave us his official “back” pics for both Loo and Una.
Huge thanks again to @khorazir for providing us with such great notes, pics, sketches, and the video of the sequence being filmed at the end of the day. We wouldn’t know half of what we know from Miskin without you!

Wow, he’s not walking like Sherlock at all, is he? Yet this appears to be part of the scene. He seems really out of it.

Benedict (the dork) having fun with his dressing gown at #setlock. He seemed in a great mood and was joking and laughing with cast and crew. I’ll write more about the dressing gown later since I got a closer look now.

#Setlock, 26.05.2016, Miskin, Wales
Since people asked for a more detailed account of the setlock activities I witnessed yesterday, I’ll try and put my notes in order and answer some of the questions that have come up. Please feel free to ask if you want to know more.
Perhaps some explanation of my previous two posts from yesterday (photos and drawings) first: I posted some photos of Benedict entertaining Martin and Amanda while they were waiting for the shot to be set up. I’m not entirely sure what they were doing, but they seemed to be in good spirits and Benedict was gestulating with his hands up near his forehead and Martin and Amanda were laughing. It’s possible that they were trying on each other’s sunglasses. The sun was shining brightly at the time, and all three were wearing shades.
Somebody else asked about Molly. They filmed a scene with her, but Loo wasn’t on set. They used a double instead wearing a yellow pencil skirt and purple stockings (and a green or turquoise cardigan, I think, although in the scene proper it was covered by a lab coat). I’ll describe the scene later, although @thesetison has already written a good account of it. I believe they used the double because Molly’s face isn’t shown in any of the shots relating to the scene. One only sees her from behind.
There also was a woman on set wearing what looked like Mary’s clothes (dark trousers, light-grey top; Mary was wearing a dark blazer on top, this woman didn’t). It’s possible that she was Mary’s double because they looked very much alike (similar height and build, even their faces were somewhat similar). Her hair was styled like Mary’s, too, and she wore it under a lilac hairnet (I think previously, people had been wondering about the woman with lilac hair). But she didn’t do any filming, at least not during the exterior shots.
Right, now follows a more chronological account:
I arrived on set at around 10 am. They were already filming by that time, and had been for a while, judging from the catering (apples and bananas) that arrived at about the same time as I. I was the only onlooker back then, apart from a local woman walking her dog (Max, a real cutie, who I also sketched). We got chatting with the security guys who were very nice and forthcoming, and they told us that they were going to stay at the same location until 6 pm the following day (27th May) and that they were running behing schedule slightly.
Until lunch break at around 1:30 pm, all filming was done indoors, apparently towards the back of the house. I heard that the interior is styled very 1970ies. They used a large daylight lamp for a while, which at some point was turned away and they covered one of windows (of the reception room, I think) with dark netting, likely to simulate night-time or twilight indoors. When the actual sun came out, they stopped filming during one scene and waited until it was hidden by cloud again, which seems to strengthen the assumption that they needed it to be dark or at least murky outside.
During breaks, first Martin and then Una came out and sat outside in the sun for a bit, chatting with crew or each other, or talking with the director who came out occasionally.
A little later, the mysterious, yet unnamed and unrecognised woman in grey emerged from the house, too. At first I wasn’t sure whether she was an actress, until someone began to style her hair. She walked around a bit taking a phone-call, but I didn’t see her up close enough to photograph her or draw her features. What I did see was this: she is of medium height, slender, has shoulder-length, slightly wavy hair. I think she was wearing (reading?) glasses, too, at least inbetween shots. She was dressed in loose-fitting grey trousers and a matching jacket made of what looked like linen, a white tunic or blouse, and a necklace of dark (wooden?) beads. She also wore light brown loafers. Her age I’d estimate to be between forty and fifty. I’ve no idea who she could be playing. The clothing looked a bit Gudrun Sjöden in style, or like fair-trade, eco-clothing, for lack of a better description. This woman left for lunchbreak and only returned late in the afternoon after the exterior shots were done. To me, she rather looked like I’d imagine John’s sister Harry to look, but this is 100% speculation, of course.
At some point, and to my delight, Benedict appeared also to take some air and sunshine. He walked around a bit listening to music. He was wearing dark trousers and a slightly crumpled dark blue or purple shirt. His hair was greasy and there was stubble on his face. This stubble, btw, was mostly ginger on his cheeks (at a later point, around 3 pm, I think, I saw his face up close when he dashed past us in order to leave the set).
I didn’t see Amanda all morning. At around 1:30, most of the team left for lunchbreak. The security folks were left to chat with the locals, who provided them with coffee and were generally very nice, allowing me to stand in their front garden which gave me a good vantage point (sadly, I didn’t have a good camera with me, hence the scarcity of photos). As for onlookers, there were only a few externals (four including myself), the rest were locals. Most of the time until late afternoon, only I and a handful of others were around at all. It got a bit busier after about 3 pm when school had ended and the local kids arrived with their parents for a bit of set watching. All in all, everybody was very nice, relaxed and respectful. The kids were having fun eating ice-lollies, and some of the elderly folks living in the surrounding houses came out for a chat. Several kids seemed really excited about seeing Martin, who they recognised from “Nativity”. Everybody seemed really proud and delighted to have the crew in their village, and somebody said one of the location scouts lives just round the corner, so I guess that’s why they chose this particular spot.
After lunch, at around 2:30, the crew returned and shortly after the actors. This time, Amanda was there, too. Sue was there (and had been earlier), and a man in a grey suit and striped tie who plays the chauffeur of the limo. They set up two cameras for the first shot of an exterior scene that also involved an ambulance that was parked in a drive across the road. The slate number of the first shot of this scene was 151, and they were filming up to 158 or 159, doing all kinds of closer shots and varying angles after the wide(ish) 151. Somebody also mentioned a trick shot, but I don’t know whether that referred to what they filmed. One camera was situated across the road next to the ambulance and seemed to be filming the door, while another, also standing across the road (roughly level with the front of the limo), was positioned in a way that the rear end of the limo would likely have been seen and the driver opening the door of the car, perhaps out of focus in the foreground while the focus of the shot lay on Sherlock and later John exiting the house.
The scene itself went as follows: the Molly double, seen from behind wearing a lab coat and pony-tail, knocks on the door (or rings the bell, not sure), John opens. Then Sherlock comes out wearing a dark blue or dark purple dressing gown over the attire described earlier. I’m not sure whether it’s his habitual dark blue silk one. It looked different, darker, and also seemed to be made of a different and slightly heavier material, because the silk would have been translucent when backlit, as parts of the gown were when he walked and the gown flared behind him a little. But this gown wasn’t. Sherlock walks past Molly and says “Thank you for coming (calling?), Molly. I hope you remembered to (bring?) my coat.” He speaks in his habitual, imperious tone, but when he crosses the street, he doesn’t walk with Sherlock’s usual, confident stride, but slouches slightly. I don’t know wether that was still in character, though, or just Ben taking it easy while being out of sight of the shot. He climbs into the ambulance.
I think Molly says something to John or to whoever else is inside the house, to which John replies, fiercely, turning his head to look at someone standing further back inside the house, “No, I don’t care”. Martin varied the vehemence of the statement in subsequent shots. Then Molly returns to the ambulance and a paramedic or driver (he was wearing a dark outfit) closes the doors of the ambulance van.
John speaks to someone inside the house for while, then he and Mary come out and walk towards the limo, the rear door of which is being held open by the chauffeur. Mary stops on the pavement and John continues towards the open car door, looking somewhat grim or pensive or curious (again, Martin’s expressions varied a little, moreover they were difficult to see over the distance).
In between shots and while the crew was setting up the next one, Ben, Martin and Amanda were milling about and chatting. Amanda held up her hands at some point and Ben high-fived her, and Martin and Amanda walked around a bit arm in arm, leaning against each other. They all seemed very relaxed and cheery, and seemed to be having a good time.
Subsequently, more shots belonging to this scene were filmed (slates 152 – 158 (or 159?)). Benedict dashed off and virtually ran past us at some point, and he didn’t return. He seemed to be in a hurry. Filming continued with the chauffeur, the ambulance man, Martin and Amanda. Una was there as well, but inside the house, and, as mentioned, the mystery woman returned late in the afternoon. Filming continued inside the house, and they were still at it when I left the set at around 6 pm.
Well, that‘s it for now. I’m on my way back there right now, expecting to be on set again at around 10 like yesterday (if all trains run on time). Feel free to ask if anything I described is unclear or you want more detail. You can find all my posts concerning Miskin setlock under my #miskin tag.
Oh, one more thing. On my way back from Cardiff, Toby Jones sat across he aisle from me, so he definitely was in Cardiff yesterday as they were speculations about him filming there. He was reading a script for a while, but I couldn‘t make out any details and didn’t want to pry. I didn’t address him, either, because he was both busy and looked tired.
So, yeah, that was one brilliant day of setlock, and here’s hoping for another today.
Fantastic notes! A lot of interesting tidbits here to think about. Molly coming to pick up Sherlock in an ambulance? John arguing with Mary possibly? Good stuff.

I thought Loo wasn’t on set, though, and this was a double????
A double was on set in place of Loo yesterday, according to the reports from the set. She tweeted earlier today, however, that she was doing some filming today.
Is she wearing a wig now, too? So did she cut her hair before or after filming ep 1?
I find it interesting that Amanda is in this shot. Mark could have easily asked her to step aside. No other actors was shown in the other ‘head shots’. Is this a clue? Mark taunting us?
