Not-So-Fantastic Four (Not A Movie Review)

So I just got back from the new Fantastic Four movie. I'm not even gonna write a review about this one; while we all thought this was going to fill in the gigantic holes that the 2005 movie and its sequel had, it did do that at certain points. But in doing so, it forgot to do what the older movies did right.

Don't get me wrong. The new one had some interesting ideas and, let's face it, this new Thing actually looks like the Thing. The 2005 Thing looked exactly like Michael Chiklis only made out of stone, beer gut and all, so thats a point for the new film in that the Thing actually looks like the Thing - a fact that I cannot stress enough. The new cast of breakout stars did an excellent job and honestly having Sue be the adopted Storm child worked really well when you see the conflict between her and Johnny - which you'll miss if you blink, because it happens like three times for about one line each way. The way these characters got their powers and the immediate aftermath of the government trying to weaponise them is unique and original, even if about 60% of the movie takes place at some bullshit location called Area 57. Seriously, did the 1 on their door sign just get tilted to one side or something? And, of course, Sue Storm is not a genius whose genius is only mentioned once with a super-suit with its zipper drawn down so it conveniently shows 75% of Jessica Albas cleavage. She is just a genius... and not much else.

The characters stayed true to their comic counterparts as far as the 'Personality' section on any basic GaiaOnline roleplayer's character profile could fill them. Reed's a nerd with a survival instinct that borders on cowardice; Johnny's a hothead who ain't gonna listen to no one tellin' him what to do ('Mmhmm' *rolls head and snaps fingers*); Sue's a brainy little sister figure who once again makes it clear that nerdy girls can still be hot as long as they say nothing courageous and do nothing to display their intelligence except when no other options are left; and Ben is an muscle-struck idiot with a misplaced grudge, who forgets his misplaced grudge immediately after Reed stops being a coward for about twenty minutes. The Doom character in this movie was interesting and on-par with the Julian McMahon version... in the sense that what sucked about the old one was good about the new one and vice versa. With this Doom character, I was impressed by how he became Doom as a result of not only his spacesuit fusing to his skin but also becoming one with the energy system in the Negative Zone. Thats another thing, too. One sec, lemme just... get my megaphone... Ahem.

IT IS CALLED THE NEGATIVE ZONE! NOT PLANET ZERO! THAT IS BASIC FANTASTIC FOUR LORE! YOU FUCKED THAT BIT UP, TRANK!

Ahem... Honestly, if you thought Fox couldn't do worse than they did with the 2005 version... Well, that's why it's 'third time's the charm', not second. Ive already talked about the poor characterisation, the lack of really noticeable conflict between the characters, and the disappearance of any depth in these characters beyond face value. Theres also the fact that the origin story takes up the entire story, leaving no room for the Fantastic Four to even be the Fantastic Four until right at the end. It says a lot that the only time the words Fantastic Four appeared in the movie was in the title screen. Honestly, you know a movie about people with superpowers is going to blow when more of the special effects budget is spent on the things that led to them getting superpowers rather than on them using their superpowers.

Really, by the end of it, when the credits started rolling, I was waiting for five things to show up: 1. The Fantastic Four actually being the Fantastic Four together for more than the three minutes it took for them to band together and kick the crap out of Doom. 2. A post-credits scene. 3. A Stan Lee cameo. 4. Ben Grimm to actually have a point going into the quantum gate when they get their powers, other than the way a children's author might bring their dog to a book signing because it inspired the main character and stamp their paw prints in stamp ink inside the covers. 5. The other half of the movie that the studio clearly forgot to put in. And none of them showed up. Maybe something similar happened to the test audience, or the writers, or generally anyone who was supposed to make sure this movie was good.

Long story short, Fox took another stab at Marvels first family and blew it even worse than the first time. Now Im starting to think that its not a coincidence that our tickets didnt read Fantastic Four but just F. As in, the grade I am giving this movie.

Oh, look. I guess I did write a review after all.

Still, look at the bright side. At least this royal screw-up might be what gets Fox to give the rights to the Fantastic Four back to Marvel Studios.

What Comes Down...

I know, I know, I let another three months go by without a word. And this time its not an update; its a forewarning, I guess. I alluded to this in an earlier post on Facebook, where I said that my books may be unavailable for a while. The fact of the matter is, there is no may about it. In five-ten days time, my books will be removed from all online vendors and retailers and the only copies left available will be the inevitable resold copies that people buy then sell on for double or triple the price. Of course, this is happening for a reason, and some of you might be able to guess this already.

My contract with GMTA/Ravenswood Publishing has come to an unfortunate, sudden, premature end.

Ill spare you all the details as to why this happened and what factors led to this outcome, but I will say that the decision was mutual and amicable in how it came about. There is no horror story that Ill be complaining about on my blog, calling people names or pointing fingers or even shaming characters, because theres nothing I can say that would actually justify any of those things. Im not going to call out any practices or cite any wrongdoings, because there are none. This is simply another divide in the road, and we each went a different direction. I had to take a few months after a certain incident in February to really reevaluate my position in this world and decide just which roads I wanted to go down. Blah blah blah, five months later this thing happened and I think itll turn out for the best for all involved. And, really, thats all anyone needs to know. In this situation its not about the why or the when or the how, but just the what, as in what happened, and what it means for the future.

To put it simply, all the rights that I signed over to GMTA back in September have been reverted back to me, which means Im now free to explore other options and opportunities and offers. While writing more of Disciples of Blood and continuing work on both the present and future episodes of Zoolaplex, Ill be submitting all three of the Buan books (including the unpolished/incomplete Disciples) to various agencies and publishers. In fact, Ive already started looking into my options and deciding which ones to pursue.

This is not a bad thing. This is merely a reevaluation and the beginning of another path that will, hopefully, lead me and my beloved books to a brighter future, one where I can share my stories with all of you and feel comfortable doing it. I dont know where Ill end up or what Ill have to do to get there. I dont even know how long itll take. But Ill get there. Theres nothing that can stop me from doing that, and Ill leave behind anything or anyone who tries.

There is no slowing down. There is no stopping. There is no giving up.

What comes down... will go up again.

Thank you, everyone, for sticking by me all these months. I can only promise that your patience will be repaid in the near future, somehow.

Its Been So Long... (Catch-Up Blog)

Okay, seriously, you guys have to stop letting me take so long to write these blogs. When it takes eight months for me to actually sit down and write one of these things, we honestly need to share the responsibility. Okay? Glad we got that sorted out. So, without further ado, lets see whats been happening the last eight months of my life!

Well, for one thing, Company of Heroes has been out for a while! The second instalment of the Buan Trilogy, and its wider saga, can be found on Amazon, Kobo, Nook, Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, iBooks, and a number of other places! Want to learn what happened after that choke-the-author-worthy cliffhanger I left you with at the end of The Perfect Mortals? Go check it out now and see! Theres a lot of secrets and mysteries being unravelled and a few new faces showing up, making for some major developments in the Buan story!

Disciples of Blood is also going well, having reached over 100,000 words out of the estimated 140-150,000 needed to take the Buan story and give it a nice conclusion. I cant give away any spoilers, but just to tease you, theres a LOT of action and suspense in this book, as well as a few heartfelt emotional scenes and even a good few twists and turns! I already know youre gonna love it!

I suppose another major development that I should mention would be that I finally got Zoolaplex off the ground! The first five episodes of Zoolaplex can be found on YouTube, Soundcloud, and even on iTunes as a downloadable podcast! The response weve received so far has been nothing short of excellent, and Im proud of not just the audience but of the cast and crew that have made this all possible! We do always need help making the show better, though; if you think the show deserves a little boost in the best of directions, feel free to support No Studio In Particular on Patreon for as little as a dollar an episode! With enough being raised, we can start branching out into larger plot arcs, merchandise, public appearances, and actually being able to pay the cast more than pennies per appearance!

Seriously, we need food. Like, now. I think Bens body is starting to digest his own stomach.

Not only that, but weve got ourselves a new art director at No Studio In Particular! Cas Flores is a very talented artist and illustrator with a passion for his art and a large fanbase in and outside the furry fandom! His responsibilities include character design, graphic design for the show, the production of marketing and branding materials, and if we raise enough money through Patreon (cough-cough-cough it up, everyone) then we can even have him produce short comic strips and maybe even short animations for Zoolaplex scenes! Our current goal is to raise enough to fund an animated intro sequence for Zoolaplex after we introduce the final main cast member in episode six, coming the 31st of May!

And with that, Ive run out of space. But, despair not, as I have made it a personal vow to keep this blog updated from now on! I had to clean out sooo many cobwebs from this place; its unbelievable.

The Perfect Mortals Rerelease & Other Updates

Whats up, my friends? You keeping well? Glad to hear it! Ive got some new news and updates for you! If youve been keeping up with my Twitter and Facebook pages, you may be aware that The Perfect Mortals has finally been edited all the way through and will be published soon by Ravenswood Publishings fantasy imprint Mythos Press. This is a big achievement for me, as I prepare to head off to Winchester University to study the top rated Creative Writing bachelors degree course in the UK! I feel as though Ive ascended from one state of existence to another with this publishing deal. People like my mentor and friend, Ben Galley, are able to make the self-publishing and independent publishing markets their bitches and make some pretty fantastic sales without anyone else working with them, but Im afraid Im really not of the right speed to make it work for me. I want my stories to be read, and publishing with a publisher like Ravenswood is just what I need to do for that to happen.

While Im mentioning him, Id just like to give a shoutout to my close friend and one of my best teachers in writing and publishing, Ben Galley! If youve heard of me then youve certainly heard of him! In addition to his lucrative Emaneska series and the upcoming graphic novel adaptation, Bens set to self-publish his new Western-style fantasy novel Bloodrush, and hes funding it through Pubslush. It promises to be on par with or even greater than the Emaneska books! If you wanna give a little towards this epic piece of literary treasure being born, then click here! Give more and get goodies! Gooooodddddiiiiiieeeeessssss!!!

Anyhows, Ive signed a five year contract with Ravenswood to publish the entire Buan trilogy as theyre finished. The Perfect Mortals, which you all already know about and have (hopefully) had the experience of reading, will be rereleased through Amazon and other channels on the 30th of September, which makes it a perfect late birthday present for myself and my mother. It comes in pretty well with me starting university; helps to go with some credible experience, I suppose! Not only that, but Company of Heroes is now back in the production lot, being edited by my friend Lisanne Cooper, a very trusted editing associate of Ravenswood authors and others; were aiming to release it in the early days of 2015, so that nasty little cliffhanger I left you all on will finally be addressed, and my friend Sophies fingers may very well return to my throat when she reads the second book.

Just kidding, Sophie! Love you really...! Please dont kill me O-O;;

I-In other news, *cough*, Disciples of Blood is also progressing well. If all goes as planned, well be releasing that in the latter half of 2015, finally wrapping the trilogy up and putting a nice little bow on it! Ill admit it: Buan is a joy for me to write, and Ive loved writing it for the past six years, (including the three years that it was just one book,) but Im really looking forward to what I have to write next, set in the same world but with a very, very different story.

Furthermore, while Buan makes a little bit of headway in the literary world, my wheels are turning in other industries as well! My upcoming comedy webseries, Zoolaplex, has finally taken a step forward! Our efforts have not been wasted, and we have finished our first infomercial starring Ben Badorf and Kiba walker as Drake and Mike! Come take a listen here! And while youre at it, like our new Facebook page here! Were hoping to start producing real episodes soon enough, with an actual teaser of the debut episode coming soon!

A Note on Free Distribution (AKA Theft)

I'd just like to take a moment to comment on something that I feel rather strongly about. It was only recently brought to my attention by other authors and artists who've had this done to them; for once, I'm thankful that I'm not as big as they are so it has yet to happen to me.

Contrary to popular belief, writers and artists and the like aren't rich. Most bestselling authors rely on their books to put them in the same category of income as the average person. Presumably, most of the money they receive comes from the publishing house to buy the rights to publish their manuscript, which can be in the tens of thousands in some cases. Other than that it's their portion of sales and any additional facets their works open up like merchandise and other media. That's taking into account the additional percentage of sales revenue that the publishing house takes and the literary agent takes (if the author has one). I don’t have a literary agent; at the end of everything, after I sign with my future publisher I’ll take a 40% cut of everything each sold copy of my books makes. In the author world, that’s a pretty damn good deal. This sort of prospect is the same for musicians, artists and most other creative workers. Think about it; if you worked at a restaurant and your work was priced at a rate of seven pounds or dollars an hour, and when you took a paycheck home you found that up to 95% of what your work had earned had been taken by the restaurant, you’d be pretty disappointed. I don’t think artists are disappointed with that; we knew and know what the industry is like and we took that shot for the good of our work.

That’s why it pains me to see when people I know enjoying creative works that they’ve gotten for free from other people or online. Whether you’re a teenager listening on your iPod to a track you downloaded for free or you’re watching a YouTube video of an audiobook rather than buying the real thing, it’s damaging to the artist. That’s taking revenue that could be accordingly distributed to us and those who helped it come into the public forum and keep it for yourself. In short, it’s theft. When someone enjoys the works that an artist has worked hard to create without having the decency or respect to pay their way for it, then it’s theft. Justify it any way you want: ‘It’s just one song for one person’ or ‘Everyone else does it’ or ‘Does anyone really pay for anything directly these days?’ Big artists have probably heard them all. There’s no way to justify stealing.

Not all authors live in mansions or can sustain themselves with just one book, or all their collective works put together. They need deals, like movie adaptations or TV shows, in order to live like that. If you’re thinking right now ‘I know about an author who lives off their writing and has a nice house’, the fact that you’ve heard of them is probably explanation enough. Most others have second jobs to keep themselves in their own homes so they can make enough to live a decent living AND enjoy creating things they love to create. Some have families to support, debts to pay, disabled relatives, anything. It’s the same with musicians, artists, even actors in some cases. Only the most famous artists with the best deals and situations live like kings with no problems or other work. That doesn’t justify anyone taking a portion of their income or refusing to give it to them in the first place, no matter how famous they are.

I’ve never done things like this; I’ve never downloaded an album for free or bought a pirate DVD or even streamed a film I haven’t aptly paid for. I always take a step back and say to myself: ‘What if that was my hard work on that screen?’ It makes the decision a lot easier. This isn’t a rant, nor is it my way of shaming anyone. It’s simply my way of asking anyone who reads this to think a little the next time the opportunity arises to keep some cash by enjoying a work of art for free. Just say ‘no’ to piracy and theft. Thanks for reading.

Buanniversary 2014!

It’s finally here! #Buanniversary 2014!

I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I stayed up until midnight to announce the long-awaited release of ‘The Perfect Mortals’ on Amazon and across the web. It was exhilarating; finally, my dream was one step closer to becoming a reality. I couldn’t tell you just how excited I was; I was over the moon! And since then, things haven’t stopped moving for me. I’ve been selling books, developing a fanbase, making connections with other authors, and adapting my writing style. I had my first competition with Jeremy Shory and the Raven Twins last year. I’ve been on the Authors on the Air radio network twice, and I even came in their Top Ten Authors of 2014. I’ve finalised the plot lines for the rest of the Buan Trilogy, as well as its various follow-on series, complete with developed characters and plot arcs. And, well, you guys have all been there with me to share in the experience. It’s been so much fun! This has been the first year of my life as an author, and it certainly won’t be the last.

But enough about that! We’re done with the past; what of the future?

Well, I’m glad you asked! 2014 heralds a great year for all of us! And, now, I have some news and those surprises I’ve been casually mentioning for the past month or so!

First of all, I start university this year! I’ll be taking a creative writing degree at a university where I live and go to college anyway, brilliant course with very high student satisfaction and great credibility. Most of the tutors for all the modules are professionally published writers in various areas of literature. I don’t think I need to tell you just how great this is; better writing skills, more diversity to my repertoire of abilities, and a better reading experience that I’ll be passing on to you! Isn’t that great?

Speaking of future reading experiences, I’ll hopefully be releasing ‘Company of Heroes’ within the next year! Still being edited to make way for the next surprise, this book is still being polished to a fine shine, but as soon as it’s done, you’ll be glad you waited! And ‘Disciples of Blood’ continues at a steady pace, and I’ll be speeding through that during the summer holiday in a few months in another 5,000 word a day challenge to get it all written and to bring the Buan Trilogy to a close; we’ll see some of the biggest twists I can think of, the best and most suspenseful drama, and an even closer look at the elusive L.C. After that, we really get into the deep stuff with where the saga’s going in the next trilogy.

But what about these big surprises?

Well… I really don’t know how to go about saying this first one, so I guess I’ll just come out and say it: ‘The Perfect Mortals’ is being picked up by a publisher. Yeah, that’s right. I know I’ve been a self-published author this whole time, and it’s been wonderful, but this is a huge opportunity to give a story like Buan the acclaim it deserves. The company, Great Minds Think Aloud Publishing, are a small-press group that were also behind bestsellers like ‘The Godling Chronicles’ by Brian D Anderson. I’m thrilled to have been taken on by such an impressive company, and I know this is gonna be the start of a beautiful partnership that can bring us both fame and success. This is why ‘Company of Heroes’ and ‘Disciples of Blood’ have sort of taken a back seat; I’m editing ‘The Perfect Mortals’ again for rerelease with GMTA in order to make an even better reading experience for you loyal fans. This edit includes completely rewritten scenes, additional details, changes to the prose, the removal of some spelling and grammar errors, and a lot more. The upcoming trailer for TPM will be released around the same time as the book itself. This is a huge thing for me; I can’t tell you how excited I am. I mean, the marketing is gonna be huge, there’s gonna be blog tours, interviews, a whole lot more than what I have now. I may even be able to visit the states or generally leave my house to go to events! I’m so happy right now!

And that’s not all; I still have one more big surprise for you.

What you may or may not know is, in addition to being a novel writer, I’m also an amateur voice actor. I’ve not been in anything massive; my main roles so far have been a line in my own trailer for TPM and a line in my friend’s upcoming Garry’s Mod video ‘Scout Con 2014’. However, I’m a diverse guy as far as my writing goes; while my main facet is fantasy like Buan, I’ve also recently started writing comedy in script form. And… Yeah. I’ve formed a group with a few other very talented voice actors, and we’re starting to make my script into an online audio series. You may have noticed me posting a link to a video on my Twitter page; that’s what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, you can find it here. The series, entitled ‘Zoolaplex’, is my new writing facet and my main VA project. It’s a cynical slice-of-life comedy series with cartoonish aspects thrown in, and the best part is there’s no visual element; nothing to see, and no narration, just like watching a TV with great speakers and a broken screen. I’m really hoping this becomes big, and I’m trying to drum up some groundswell for when we start recording in the June/July area. Hopefully before that we’ll be releasing some infomercial shorts to help and get some additional attention. But, rest assured, the books are my top priority; VA is fun and a great hobby, but the first thing on my agenda is my career as an author. ‘Zoolaplex’ is a way to help me expand my horizons and to help others expand theirs, too; we’re helping amateur VAs earn credits for their videographies and allowing indie bands and musicians to have their music played in certain scenes to help them as well. (However, if you know any big-time celebs who’d also be willing to lend their voices to a one-shot character, then great! Especiallyifit’sBryanCranston.) We’ve already set up a Twitter account for the show (@Zoolaplex) so you can go there for additional humour and to keep up with the series!

And… yeah. That’s pretty much it from me :) Thank you so much for this wonderful year of support; let’s make it the first of many more to come! Happy #Buanniversary! Stay tuned for more updates as time goes by!

Week Five of the Scavenger Hunt!

Congratulations to Tatiana Mason, the winner of last week’s contest! But for those of you who didn’t get there fast enough last week, here’s your second chance to win a bundle of books between myself, Jeremy Shory and the Raven Twins! This week’s hunt is hosted by the Raven Twins on their own website, but the questions are still below here!
