Dark Imagination & Escaping Our Circumstances

Several years ago, I was struggling with work and the demands of ministry (and an undiagnosed PTSD problem). One of the things that was common leading up to and during this time was escape fantasy. For example, I would be walking down the street and see a bus and think to myself, “If I could get hit just hard enough by that bus that I would be in hospital for a few months, that would be great.”

I didn’t want to die but my willingness to suffer this kind of incident for the chance of being fre...

I’m A Bisexual Christian

I was watching an episode of ‘America’s Got Talent’ recently and I thought to myself how wonderful it must feel to have a talent that receives the kind of applause and affirmation that many do on that show. Few wouldn’t want that feeling!

Now, imagine the reverse: Imagine something that is intimately and beautifully a part of who you are that inspires disgust, rejection, and even hatred from countless others. Imagine the fear and shame and hopelessness you would experience if such treatment w...

LGBT+ Community & the Catholic Church – An Interview with Fr. James Martin SJ

As the pastor of a Mennonite church, people are often surprised by how often I quote Catholic sources. Yet, they have played an important part of my faith journey, as I suspect they will continue to do. Chief among those influences is Father James Martin, SJ, who often popularly known outside of his tradition for being a regular guest on satirical news program The Colbert Report. His book “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life” (Harper One., 2010) remains a fav...

Z Nation: Interview with Russell “Doc” Hodgkinson

In recent days, many of us have felt like the world is facing an imminent doom- after all, even the famed Doomsday Clock moved us closer to that dire fate. For myself, I have to make myself take a break from the news and escape into some entertaining fiction, even if for just a few hours. And what better way to make ourselves feel better than with the zombie apocalypse?

Admittedly, my typical go-to for zombie hoards is “The Walking Dead” but even that can feel too close to home of late. So,...

Imagine the Possibilities, Then Act

Now is a time that we must choose to live into the best hopes and intentions of our faith. We must stop relying on external forces- be they governments or other institutions- and instead seek to become the living alternative the world needs to see. This is far more costly than most are willing to pay, but the alternatives are much worse. Dare to imagine what we could be together if we put everything we had into such a vision.

Why Clickbait Is Destroying Civilization

This morning, while getting my eight year old son ready for school, a headline on my Facebook news feed caught my eye. Having seen it pop up several times over the last few months, shared by very concerned friends and family, I decided to take a close look. The title certainly grabbed attention: “It’s ‘digital heroin’: How screens turn kids into psychotic junkies”. I glanced up nervously as my son wandered over the computer, wondering if it was time for an intervention before he hawked our TV...
