The Racial Problems In Publishing
This morning I woke up to find several writing/publishing friends of mine sharing an article on Facebook. The (unfortunately) titled piece, “Book Publishing Is Almost as White as the Oscars”, explores the very real problems within the publishing world. Featured in the article is an image (above) showing the significant lack of diversity in the publishing world. The image comes from a larger infographic put out by Lee & Low Books. Here it is in full:

Writers On Writing
As I continue to develop my skills as a writer, the one constant discipline I embrace is to learn from other writers. Obviously we learn from writers simply by reader their works. We can also learn from those who have written about the craft, such as one of my all time favorite book, “On Writing” by Stephen King. However, in the internet age we have access to countless sources of great writing advice from authors. While I may in a later post list of all the resources I use, I wanted to share...

Choosing A Title For Your Book
Much like my article about book covers, the titles we use in writing are often seen a secondary to the content. Yet, in the age of click-bait headlines and saturate market where fewer original ideas seem possible, titles represent an important, even critical aspect of our work. Whether it is a book- fiction or non-fiction- or an article, or a blog post, the title can and should set the stage, the tone and the direction of the piece.

(The following is an excerpt from my book, The Cost of Community: Jesus, St. Francis & Life in the Kingdom)
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who buil...

What Makes An Effective Book Cover?
There are few English idioms whose sound wisdom is more soundly rejected in practice than this the one:
“Never judge a book by its cover.”
While the expression is used far more metaphorically than just for books, the truth is that most of us are frequently drawn to books with attractive and creative covers more than we are to ones that are plain or badly designed. As a writer, seeing the cover design of my books is one of the most exciting parts of the process (regardless of the fact that as...

Arpin-Ricci Family Update – Jan. 2016
We hope this finds you well and healthy in this new year, having enjoyed a lovely Christmas season with your family and friends. It was a wonderful time for our family, with many amazing memories shared. The highlight of the holidays was a month long visit from Kim’s sister and her husband. Micah had a blast with Auntie Ally and Uncle Tim, introducing these Aussies to some Canadian winter tradition. They went skiing/snowboarding, tobogganing, ice skating, a horse-d...
