The Hole Chapter 11

This story begins here

Ending

When the Squirrelevator reached the top of its climb, its passengers were jolted awake by the sudden stop. And a good thing it was that they were, for no sooner had they disembarked the platform than it began descending once more. Two groggy young boys and four bright eyed, bushy tailed squirrels, surveyed their surroundings, completely unaware their state immediately after waking was in any way cliched.

"I know this place!" said Quentin. And so he did, for it was t...

The Hole Chapter 10

This story begins here

Returning

Returning to the surface was not quite as easy as finding Squirrel Country had been. Of course, almost everything is more difficult than falling, so perhaps this is not remarkable.

First, Mr. and Mrs. Gnutte busied themselves packing their belongings. If you have never seen a squirrel pack, you really ought to spend more time out of doors, as it is a most amusing sight. You see, squirrels do not have backpacks, duffel bags, satchels, purses, attache cases, or lug...

The Hole Chapter 9

Fairness

"That's not fair!" said Quentin and Quinton, whose childlike senses of justice had been augmented all the more by their being twins.

"You can come back up to the surface, you know," continued Quentin.

"Yeah!" said Quinton. "All those people have probably forgotten about you by now."

"Or they're dead," Quentin added. He knew his brother did not have a firm grasp on the average human lifespan.

"That's probably true, dears," said Mrs. Gnutte, "but there are always more...

The Hole Chapter 8

This story begins here

Story

"Almost five hundred years ago, my great-great-fifteen times great-grandsire Hugo in the wild woods of the North with many of his kin. They lived at peace with the humans in those times, until one day a new group came along. They called themselves the French, and at first they were quite friendly. Until the day the orders came from their home land. King Francis, egged on by Queen Mary, declared my esteemed ancestor to be a heretic and ordered all loyal to the crown...

The Hole Chapter 7

This story begins here
"Drey"

A drey, as it turns out, is the real name for a squirrel’s nest, and the Gnutte’s drey was a particularly nice one. It had a real table, chairs large enough to sit in, and dishes made entirely from the largest nut shells Quentin and Quinton had ever seen. Acorn bottoms were bowls, and their tops were plates, with the stems carved into silverware. Two halves of a pecan shell were serving bowls: one filled with strange breads and the other with various greens. A haze...

The Hole Chapter 6

This story begins here
"Cave"

Quinton and Quentin looked at the feet. Then at each other. Then back at the feet. As the boys realized that they were not imagining the appendages which lay before them, they each decided that the feet must be attached to something, and slowly allowed their eyes to travel upward. On doing so, they found that just above the furry feet was a pair of furry legs, which were wearing a pair of denim shorts. Above the shorts was a body with some sort of shirt on it. They...

The Hole Chapter 5

This story begins here
"Falling"

Falling is a strange experience. When you first start to fall, you do not realize what is happening. If it is a short fall, you may not know you were falling until after you have already finished. So you are surprised by the fall, but since it is over, you know you don’t need to worry about it. But sometimes you fall far enough that you realize you are falling while you are still doing so, and then you have time to wonder what will happen when you land. If you a...

The Hole Chapter 4

This story begins here
"Hole"

“What’s your way?” asked Quinton.

“Well,” said Quentin, “if your book is wrong, then other books are probably wrong, too. So the only way we can know for sure is if we dig the hole ourselves.”

“Couldn’t we just look on a globe or something?”

“No way! Have you seen our globe? It’s all wrong. It’s missing half of the countries, like Candy Land.” Quinton had to admit that he had never seen Candy Land on the family globe, so off to the garage the twins went in search of t...

The Hole Chapter 3

This story begins here
"Bet"

One Tuesday in the middle of Summer, Quentin wanted to get in a fight. Quinton, however, refused to cooperate. All day long he said only things that Quentin had no choice but to agree with. By the time the two of them went to bed that night, Quentin was very grouchy, and decided that the next morning he would disagree with the first thing out of his twin’s mouth, no matter what it was.

Wednesday morning, Quinton was the first to wake up. “Quentin, get up,” said Quint...
