Why taking the Influenza Vaccine Matters! #IPromiseToStopFlu.

One of the most common misconceptions that patients coming to me have is that the flu is the same as having the common cold. I get how they may have thought so but it is important that they - and you too - understand the difference.

What was the last gift you bought for yourself? #WordlessWednesday

Lamy Safari Limited Edition Dark Lilac and Lamy Ocean Blue Al Star Fountain Pens
I usually refrain from really buying stuff for myself. Call it poverty, self-esteem issues or just plain laziness... either way, I am working on fixing all three of those flaws.
One shop in any mall where you can find me drooling is a good stationary store with unique pens.
Personally, I am a big fan of Lamy's fountain pens. Unlike the traditional 'fountain pen' look that most brands have, Lamy comes in a wide array of colours from muted whites and grays to bright yellows, fluorescent greens an...

My first Encounter with Meningococcal Meningitis #TogetherAgainstMeningitis

On Monday morning, a child was admitted to our hospital with a high-grade fever that the mother claimed had started the previous night. Over the last 17 hours, the poor child was not taking any feeds and seemed to hate being touched, which was breaking his mother's heart, confused as she was about why the paediatricians were looking so grim for 'just a fever.'

When I came to the ward on Tuesday morning, the child's bed was empty. The nurses informed us that the child passed away the previous n...

Why we need more Automated External Defibrillators across India #SaveHeart

In which area is the coffee machine at your workplace? Where is the cafeteria? The bathrooms?
Could you answer all the three above questions? Good. Now answer this one last question for me: where is the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) located?

If your answer was 'I don't know', let me try to make it easier for you - have you seen an AED at the airport in your city? At the mall you regularly frequent? The school your child attends? Do you know what an AED is and what does it looks like?

Ye...

School Teacher Carries Differently Abled Child On His Back To Ensure She Does Not Miss Out On Class Trip #WATWB

School teacher Jim Freeman carried his differently abled 25 kilo student across the entire trek to ensure she did not miss out on a field trip with her friends.

Ryan Neighbor suffers from spina bifida, a condition of the spinal cord that has left her unable to walk since birth and hence dependent on a wheelchair. The 10 year old attends school at Tully Elementary and is in fourth grade.

When the class was preparing for a field trip to the Falls of Ohio State Park a week ago, Ryan was naturally sad not to be able to go with her friends but accepted that it came under the list of things that were not possible for her in this...

Amuse Bouche #WordlessWednesday

I was pleasantly surprised when I sat down for dinner recently at a restaurant in Kochi and was served this as an amuse bouche. Take a good look at these images and tell me what you think it could be.

an amuse bouche served in Kochi

(No. This isn't a witch's pot being used to make magic potion. And yes, that is a dense nearly opaque smoke emanating from the serving dish!)

What is an Amuse Bouche? For starters, this isn't a starter! An 'Amuse bouche' is not something you order.Amuse bouche (French for 'Mouth Amuser') is a littl...

How 2 milliliters stops your suffering #WordlessWednesday

2 ml of water in a palm
What you see in my hand is 2 milliliters (2 ml). If someone were to offer you 2 ml to drink, you would probably scorn at it. I mean, even the smallest glass of a soft drink beverage you would accept is probably around 100 ml, right?
With two ml of anything, there is not much you can do, right?
For me, this 2 ml is life saving.
2 ml of a drug is all I need while giving spinal anaesthesia to make you absolutely pain free during a Caesarean section. To help you smile as you deliver your...

How to Choose The Best Mattress for Your Bed?

Sleep plays a very important role in good health and well-being. The human body is conditioned to function perfectly only when it gets enough quality sleep at the right time. You can have the luxury of quality sleep only when you have a comfortable mattress to support your body. So, it is extremely important to invest some time in deciding the right mattress.

Once you are in a store, the variety and range of mattress prices will make it difficult for you to reach any decision.&nbsp...

100 Ways The World Tells You We Cherish Your Presence In Our Lives #SuicidePrevention

Authors note:The theme of the 2019 World Suicide Prevention Day is ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’.

In the past, I have spoken about Suicide Prevention from multiple points of view, including what you need to do if you feel the urge to give up on life as well as what you as a friend can do if you feel someone else is considering ending their life.

In most of these cases, the final straw that breaks the metaphorical camel's back is not an acute event. A sense of helplessness and lone...
