A New Beginning
I’ve been wearing my hijab for 15 years on my own will and it was my truth. But the last 2 years I’ve been feeling that I’m growing into a different version of myself that no longer can be represent with hijab. I tried everything to cope with my restlessness and at one point I know that I have to make a decision once again to be who I am.
When I finally took it off weeks ago, a friend asked me what changed me, I said this is how I always been for the past few years. I just finally dis-cover me.
Telling your mom you’re taking off your hijab felt the same like telling that you’re gay. It has the same volume. My mom still in big sadness and rejection over my decision and I’m respecting her by taking baby steps towards my truth. I understand her feelings, but I am my own person and I am responsible for my own happiness.
I find it liberating being able to choose moments when I want to wear headscarf and I’m thankful I live in a country that allows me to choose what I want to wear.
This is not an emotional decision, it’s been well thought of. I’m not a better or worse Muslim inside, I still wake up at 4.30am to pray, I still heavily quote Quran as my reference, I still learn and create good stuff every day, I still share my knowledge, and my number one goal is still to make the world a better place. I do what I did, now I just express myself differently.
Rechoose yourself. Choose to be the person who you really are. Decide to love yourself unconditionally by giving yourself what you need.
I realized that the first basic human need is existence not food. That’s why we asked for WiFi connection even before we eat at a restaurant. Expressing one true self means existing greatly. Something unexpected happens when people start talking to me about how I inspire them to make a decision they have been delaying and become who they really are, it’s not even related to hijab and it’s never been about the hijab. It’s about expressing your personal values. Each and every single one of us has our own stage of understanding life and I respect that process as much as I need my process to be respected.
I am happier than I ever been. Thank you friends for your amazing love & support

Passport to Happiness – a Travelogue by Ollie
Jika Anda sedang melalui ‘neraka’ dunia, keep walking.
Perjalanan selalu menjadi jawabannya.
Buku Passport to Happiness baru akan diluncurkan tanggal 1 Oktober, 2015.
I wish you a loving journey ahead!

How to Generate Ideas for Writers
So, I just finished writing 2 books: one is my first travel journal, my story to find LOVE in 11 cities in the world (Yeap, I know you’re curious!) AND my first biography book, I wrote for my successful serial entrepreneur friend, Denny Santoso (you definitely want to read his success principles!). I’m pretty much in, not only holiday mood now, but also writing mood!
Earlier this morning, I found my old journal where I kept a note of a very inspiring list on how to generate ideas for writers.
I’m pretty sure I get this from some book, but I totally forgot the source. These tips have been my basic ground for writing.
Spend morning in a bookshop or cafe
Keep a notebook to compile ideas
Read ALL kinds of books; yes I still read more than 2 books a day
Break your routines, try to ignite stories
“Steal” conversations from people
Talk to strangers! Talk to people you’re not usually talk to
Put your own stories or personal voice in it
Do online research & be organized
Start with excitements
Ask yourself: “What feeling I want to leave the reader?”
Write down the title that make you focus on the story
Read samples of stories openers in other books
Begin the story in the middle
Lexicon – collect words and its meaning
Tweak clichés
Imagine the story in your head
Discuss the plot with someone else
Write a memo to yourself about the story
Write non-stop for 10 minutes
Write the part that excites you
Change your writing space, write everywhere
Have a daily schedule for writing, I write best in the morning
Make a list to accomplish
Explore: read a lot
Gather: research
Organize: put it together in folders or notebooks
Focus: one thing at a time
Structure: use mind map
Draft: switch off the phone and write, don’t stop until you need to, get the first draft done
Reward: you can update your social media, travel more, etc
Revise: time to edit and make it perfect
If you can say it better, record it first then edit the transcript
Build a story around conflicts and complications
Use mind map to create your story from A to Z, put your topic at the center of the map
If you’re writing a fiction, use 5 parts plan by Robert McKee.
Inciting incident
Progressive complications
Crisis
Climax
Resolution
Research other writers writing techniques
Write scenes in Post-It. Play with it
Create “hills of middle” in the story
Collect good endings from books and movies
Pay attention to the editing part
Check typos
Does the dictions are right for the target readers?
Is there any important questions you haven’t answer?
Is there any leaps of logic?
Recheck every facts
And last but not least: “The act of writing is what makes me a writer.” -Roy Peter Clark

See?

My Favorite Restaurants in Jakarta
Let’s talk about food!
I have stopped cooking since 5 years ago and I always, I repeat, ALWAYS, eat out. Of course there are times I won’t have time to go out, then I must rely to food delivery services. Thank God, a lot of my favorite restaurants already connected to food delivey platforms such as FoodPanda.
So, I’m going to list my favorite restaurants who’s available for delivery and why I like them!
Why Es Teler 77? Because they have my favorite Indonesian food! Try their amazing Es Teler (literally translated as drunken ice because it consists of a lot of ingredients in one glass), also try their Baso Super (meatball) and their Roti Bakar (Toast)
Padangnese food is among the most popular lunch food in Indonesia. (Beef) Rendang being one of the most popular food in the world has been the speciality of Sederhana restaurant. Also my favorite is Dendeng Batokok (Beef) and Ayam Pop (chicken).
If you like duck or if you don’t like duck, you HAVE TO try The Original Crispy Duck of Bebek Bengil restaurant. It’s heavenly delicious and you must eat them with your bare hands! Ask for Sambal Matah (Matah chilis) to perfecting the flavor!
If you really sure about your abilities to eat hot food, why don’t you challenge yourself and your friends, and try Mbah Jingkrak’s many selection of sambals (chilis).
I’m all for roasted lamb and Kambing Bakar Cairo is one of the best options for that.
Kenny Rogers’ Quarter Meal roasted chicken never failed me!
Istanbul Turkey Restaurant & Cafe
My trip to Istanbul last year definitely has set a new bar for a delicious food and this Turkish food’s restaurant is worth to try.
Need 4pm snacks? Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki are here for the rescue!
For dessert, pancakes at Pancious is one of the best in town. I’ll go for Blueberry pancake and it works every time to fix my mood!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try a lot of Durian dishes in this restaurant. I surely will recommend pancake durian for beginner!
If you haven’t eaten this yet, Martabak will changed your life, and D’Marco has many varieties of martabak. Try Martabak Nutella for a whole new level of eating martabak.
Of course there are many more restaurants listed in FoodPanda, more than 400 restaurants in Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi alone, and more in Bali, Bandung and Makassar. Better install FoodPanda apps now before you’re feeling hungry.
Bon appetite!

How Twitter Plans to Help Raising the Number of Women in Technology in Indonesia
“Why do you think more girls in Indonesia are interested to learn IT?” Dick Costolo @dickc, the CEO of Twitter himself, asked me on a rare opportunity to have breakfast at a roundtable discussion with NGOs for @TwitterForGood during his visit to Jakarta. He was intrigued by his visit to University of Indonesia the day before, where he met the Dean of Computer Sciences, who is a woman, Dr. Mirna Adriani and seen women students were actively participated in building projects using twitter data.
I was invited to the roundtable as the co-founder of Girls in Tech Indonesia @GirlsinTechID. We (me @salsabeela, @anantya, @adheRiya) founded Girls in Tech Indonesia in 2011, to inspire more women to initiate change with technology, using technology to solve problems in society and also to use technology as the catalyst for their success. The number of women in IT sector in Indonesia was only around 20%. That’s why, I was surprised to hear from Dick Costolo that the number is even less, in the States.
There are main 3 activities we’re trying to do at Girls in Tech Indonesia:
Create awareness and highlights role models by creating meetups that inviting successful women who work or starting her own company in Technology sector, to speak and share the knowledge they have, their experience in having a career in technology, and what impact they’ve made to society. I wrote a book called Girls & Tech , also to fulfilled this purpose.
Sharing practical knowledge by giving small workshops to introduce tech tools that they can use to overcome on any pressing needs of women in Indonesia
Private chat for women entrepreneurs, we call it Girls Chat, aims to give channel for women entrepreneurs to share their problems in running their company, while getting support and learning from listening to each other’s experiences.
As a former web developer and a girl in IT, I understand that women communicate and work differently. I personally believe, women need to be inspired with how technology can change life, what’s the result of technology products that is fun and applicable to use for their daily life. Let them relate technology to their own cause, let them find their goals and objective in building innovation, adds with curiosity, then the brighter future, with more participation of women in technology, is near.
Dick Costolo mentioned few times of his concerned about the gender gap in tech. He’s trying to solve this problem by supporting Girls Who Code initiative back in the States and also to partner with the University of Indonesia to create the #Twitter4WaniTek scholarship, which will fund every year for the next 3 years 5 scholarships for women to study Computer Sciences.
Thank you @Twitter team, especially Julie @tweetinjules , who has given us tremendous opportunity and support. This is just a beginning. Cheers to #AwalBaru and good luck for Twitter Indonesia @TwitterID!

Recognizing Small Victories and Moving Forward to 2015
I’ve been a Muslim and embracing Islam all my life. While Islam means surrender, only recently that I surrender myself to the compassion and love of God. Accepting the fact that what I need is not neccessarily the same with what I want. And at the end of the year, I found myself losing some people I trust, losing a business I nurture for years, let go precious stuff I had, yet I gained so much more. In the midst of chaos, I finally found myself.
In my religion, the first revelation that The Prophet Muhammad SAW received was ‘Iqra’ means a command to ‘Read!’. While inside a dark cave, the meaning of ‘Read’ goes beyond reading books. From the very beginning, we’re told to read not only with our eyes but also with our ears and our heart. It’s by seeing the deeper meaning of a situation, listening carefully to people around us and also activating our emotions, that we’re able to took lessons from any circumstances. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do in 2014.
I’ve learned that when you follow your highest excitements, good things will come to you. Luck is something you create with positive attitude towards every single thing that bring you down. And when you hit the bottom, by all means, jump higher with widest smile you can have. Because you’re soaring through life and things will only get more exciting.
My decision to start writing a Miracle Journal in August 2014 was proven to be a life-saving moment for me. I record every single small victories, aha moments, coincidences, serendipity moments that happen to my life. Since then, I notice and experience miracles on daily basis, simply because I expect them to come into my life.
And when I make myself ready to be a student, the teacher appears. My spiritual mentor/teacher is the highlight of 2014. He shows me the big picture, he helps me connect the dots, and I can’t be more grateful with all the above and beyond knowledge he has given to me in the short 3 months.
You will lose people who’s no longer important for your growth, and that’s a fact that sometimes keeping us awake at night, wondering why we lose this one or two people we care about the most. I’m on my way to completely let go of whoever no longer aligned with me and welcoming hundreds of new people who has the same passion, vision and excitement, ready to help me achieve higher goals and live happier life.
For that I thank my supportive friends in 2014:
My partners especially Brilliant Yotenega and my team in my businesses who always got my back and keep me going
My loyal readers and workshop participants I met and had expressed their love to me
My 60 bestfriends on Path, you know you are!

My solid partners Natali Ardianto & Nuniek also my team in StartupLokal; including team from Telkom Indonesia who will help us spread the good news and nurture startup ecosystem in Indonesia in 2015
My friends in Paris, Catherine Barba, Arnaud Chiaramonti and team, who has invited me and let me share my story as a woman in technology for La Journee de La Femme Digitale 2014
My friends in Singapore from CrowdSourcing Week, Epi Ludvik Nekaj & team, who trust me to be their Indonesian advisor, you guys open my eyes and show me the future through crowdsourcing
My friends in Almaty, Kazakhstan, especially Tristram Perry, for inviting me to speak to young people in the region on social media at Tech Forum Central Asia where I learn the dynamics of ‘Stan’ countries for the first time
My friends in Moscow, Russia, especially Ambassador Djauhari Oratmangun, who has invited me to speak at rAsia Forum 2014 and introducing Indonesia to the world, a very valuable experience for me

I’m grateful to be able to launch my 27th book ‘The Power in You‘ in 2014 and the book has helped many young Indonesian to realize the power within them. I should be able to launch more books in a year though :P
My New Year’s Resolutions for 2015 are pretty straightforward:

Creating Miracles through Entrepreneurship – Key Lessons from Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2014 in Marrakech
Whoever seeks miracles, will find it.
I believe miracles can help accelerate our action beyond the initial plan and entrepreneurs are the best people to get inspirations from on how to create miracles.
That is exactly why I’m so excited to attend Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2014 in Marrakech, Morocco, to represent my company NulisBuku.com – an online self-publishing print-on-demand platform in Indonesia.
6800 participants (mostly entrepreneurs and investors), 194 speakers, 405 medias are buzzing at the #GES2014, opening gate of serendipity and new opportunities.
I’m one of the lucky 70 young entrepreneurs from 30 countries around the world, to be invited as a delegate and participate in GES Youth. GES Youth was hosted as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) and Universite Cadi Ayyad was the venue for us to share ideas and inspirations throughout the day. I got the chance to present my company NulisBuku.com who aim to help young aspiring writers in Indonesia to self-publish their own book and earn from the royalties of their writing. Since then, I become known as ‘The Book Girl’ :))
#GES2014 allowed me to meet the most passionate people who tried to solve world problems. And because this is the first time I’m visiting Marrakech, I’m fascinated with the stories of women entrepreneurs from the neighboring countries, multilingual discussion panels who speak effortlessly in French, Arab, English and Spanish, and of course inspired with the projects their working on.
I’m also very lucky to be selected to attend a discussion with US VP Joe Biden at a roundtable with young entrepreneurs after his inspiring speech to open the Summit. Many of us share the same challenges in running our business and fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in our country, but of course we also can learn on how to tackle those challenges and bring forward productivity in the region.
Official Photo by State Dept
For Indonesian, ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) will start in 2015, and by 2020 we will need millions of new jobs as the new young people will enter the labor force. Starting a new business, will open opportunities and help grow the economy. And with the amazing spike of technology influencing our life, this is the best time to start a business!
Here are few lessons learned from Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2014:
Women hold up half the sky
No country will prosper if they ignore the potential of half of their population. Even on the day before the Summit, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day was held to highlight women entrepreneurs that has make changes in their country. One of the pitching winners was Esraa El Sayed Saleh from Egypt. She’s the CEO of Biopical, a waste-management company that treat sewage water and convert it into treated water and also generate biogas during treatment. She’s not only solving environmental problems but also creating a new energy alternative. Biopical is the result of her research in University. She’s a young woman with talents and passion. When you give her chance, she will shine and grab your attention almost immediately.
Take the courage the be a pioneer
Ikmalina Hakimah Hj Md Yunus co-found the first game developer company in Brunei, IItsybytes. They will soon launched a new adventure game based on the discovery of oil in the country called ‘Black Gold’. She’s not afraid to be the first, and has been rewarded fund and opportunities to introduce her company in the big world event like Tokyo Game Show.
Problems = Opportunities
Entrepreneurs can see opportunity in a problem. Shazia Saleem @shaziafsaleem of the United Kingdom, is the founder of ieat foods, the UK’s first brand of ethical halal ready prepared meals. The ideas coming from her own frustration to find limited choices of halal food in the country.
Lateefa Alwaalan @lwallan of Saudi Arabia, founded Yatooq, a startup that produces instant Arabic coffee from recognizing the difficulty people often have in preparing the sophisticated and luxurious Arab coffee correctly.
Innovators aren’t born, they’re made
The inspiration to innovate is ignited by accepting challenges and start solving problems. GIST (Global Innovation through Science and Technology) Program seeks to strengthen economies by empowering young innovators around the world through Tech-I competition. 30 Finalists was inspired to innovate and pitch at #GES2014 and one of them is Sartika Kurniali from Indonesia. She created Ami, it’s a microinsurance app to facilitate Indonesian users to access health insurance information and process easily. This is an important app, as Indonesian health insurance ownership is the lowest in Asia.
Incubators are on the rise
A good number of my fellow delegates are running incubators in their country. One of the incubator that caught my attention is Spatula, created by Camelia Drissi @CAMELIADRISSI. Spatula aims to encourage women to grow a culinary business and mitigate start-up costs by providing a shared use kitchen for rent to produce healthy food products. Such an excellent idea!
Asma Mansour also initiate Tunisian Center for Social Entrepreneurship working to develop an ecosystem conducive to the creation and growth of social enterprise and its environment.
Watching my friends discussing on their incubators create spark of new ideas in my head that I might be able to execute in 2015. I’m so lucky to be among the most inspiring people!
Embrace Technology
Solving offline problems with online solution is one of the common case I observe at the #GES2014. By that, understanding technology to solve problems is one of the most important aspects to embrace, especially for women. That’s why my friend from UK, Anne-Marie Imafidon founded Stemettes, to inspire the next generation of females into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields by showing them the amazing women already in STEM via a series of panel events, hackathons, exhibitions, and mentoring schemes.
No excuse. Focus on your dreams!
From the fragile area of Gaza, Mariam Abultewi, founded Wasselni, a taxi booking app to help people find others to carpool with to decrease traffic in cities like Cairo and Amman. Women in Gaza are moving to innovate inspite of living in uncertain political situation between Israel and Palestine.
I’m worried about her and ask how she can start a business in a terrifying situation in Gaza. Her answer was firm and not a glimpse of doubt in her voice, “I decide to focus on my dreams.” – I’m speechless!
Anyone can have their part to change the world
Each and every projects I’ve learned during the #GESYouth presentation and summit prove me that anyone can change the world in the specific area they believe in. I believe in changing the world through words, someone else through food, others through energy, and so on. We will find our own journey and start marching from there with passion and energy only entrepreneurs can understand.
Today is the era of collaboration. Creative economy brings abundance. Can we create miracles through design? (like attending conferences, network, connect and collaborate) – Yes, we surely can!
Thanks to all #GESYouth organizers, volunteers, US Embassy Jakarta, and last but not least, all my GES Youth 2014 friends. You have inspired me and you will be missed!

How to Discover The Power in You
