Gold: The Real Story

In "Gold," Matthew McConaughey plays Kenny Wells, who, with Mike Acosta, finds a rich gold mine with deposits worth billions of dollars, and then has to cope with financial, corporate, and political predators to keep them from stealing it.

It is inspired by a real story that is even wilder than the one in the movie. SPOILER ALERT: The following gives away important plot details of the film that are best enjoyed as a surprise, so read this only after you've seen the movie.

Wells is based...

Trailer: My Life as a Zuccini

Recently the nominees for the Best Animated Feature Oscar have presented us with some surprises. This year Pixar's popular "Finding Dory" was not nominated but a movie that almost no one had heard of was: "My Life as a Zuccini," a French film coming to US theaters with the voices of Will Forte, Nick Offerman, Ellen Page and Amy Sedaris.

After his mother’s sudden death, Zucchini is befriended by a police officer, Raymond, who accompanies him to his new foster home, filled with other...

Gold

In "Gold," People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive Matthew McConaughey has more fun playing a bald, overweight, often obnoxious character than we have watching him. The problem, as so often the case when stars produce their own vehicles, is that the movie assumes more affection for the character than it is able to generate. McConaughey plays prospector Kenny Walls (based on real-life goldbug John Felderhof -- don't Google him if you don't want spoilers). The film, directed by Stephen Gaghan...

A Dog’s Purpose

The doesthedogdie website helpfully lets us know what some people consider the most important deciding factor in selecting a film. They -- and their visitors -- will have a tough time with this one because in one sense there are at least three dogs who die in this film but in another the whole point of the movie is that dogs do not really die; there are doggy spirits that go on from dog to dog, learning how to be more devoted, more...

Ron Padgett: The Poet of “Paterson”

I loved Paterson, the story of a poet/bus driver played by Adam Driver who lives in the city that shares his name.

The four poems written by the film's main character were written by Ron Padgett, who told PBS that he first said no when asked to step into the voice of the movie character, but then “found...

Tribute: Mary Tyler Moore

She could turn the world on with her smile. She could take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. We have lost one of television's brightest lights, Mary Tyler Moore, who has died at age 80.

Mary Tyler Moore starred in two of the most beloved and most influential series in television history, but in one of her earliest appearance in the then-new medium of television, you never saw her face. As Sam, secretary to detective "Richard Diamond" (David Janssen), the camera stayed on...

Daniel Pemberton on Composing the Score of “Gold”

Daniel Pemberton is one of my favorite composers ("The Man from Uncle," "Steve Jobs") and I was delighted to catch up with him to talk about the score for the new Matthew McConaughey film "Gold," inspired by the true story of the rise and fall of a gold miner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsGxL...

"Gold is a pretty remarkable movie about this character called Kenny Wells who comes from a family of gold prospectors," Pemberton said. "He is down on his luck, down to his last few bucks...
