John Wick Chapter 2

A little bit of a spoiler alert here: this time the dog does not die. Other than that, "John Wick Chapter 2" is pretty much what you saw in the first "John Wick." Once again, this is a movie about a good guy who happens to be an assassin, going after the bad guy assassins, in an assassin demimondaine with cool details but mostly a lot of assassining. Director Chad Stahelski, a martial arts instructor turned...

Fifty Shades Darker

Ibsen had it right in "A Doll's House." When his heroine walked out and slammed the door at the end of the play, he left it there. She didn't come back in two sequels. Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson, wearing bangs, the universal signifier of adorkability), despite her name, is not that resolute. In "Fifty Shades of Gray" she was a shy college student introduced to the Red Room of Pain and the world of bondage and submission by fabulously handsome and fabulously wealthy and fabulously troubled...

A United Kingdom

In Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Lysander says, "aught that I could ever read/Could ever hear by tale or history/The course of true love never did run smooth." It may just seem that way because the most enduring loves are those where challenges bring the couples together instead of tearing them apart. To quote Shakespeare again, this is the love that "looks on tempests, and is never shaken." "A United Kingdom" tells the true story of a love that triumphed over the most intense...

Trailer: Contemporary Color

In the summer of 2015, legendary musician David Byrne staged an event at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to celebrate the creativity of Color Guard: synchronized dance routines involving flags, rifles, and sabers, colloquially known as “the sport of the arts.”

Byrne recruited performers including the likes of St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, Devonté Hynes, Zola Jesus, Ad-Rock, tUnE-yArDs, and Ira Glass to collaborate on original pieces with 10 color guard teams from across the US and Canada....

PBS: John Lewis — Get In the Way

Congressman John Lewis was the youngest person to speak at the March on Washington organized by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This week, PBS will show a documentary about Lewis, a key figure in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and a genuine statesman and hero. Despite more than 40 arrests, physical attacks, and serious injuries, John Lewis remained a devoted advocate of the philosophy of nonviolence. He was one of the leaders of the SNCC and a Freedom Rider and his

The LEGO Batman Movie

"The LEGO Batman" movie is not just sure to be one of the funniest movies of the year, with laugh lines that come so fast it is impossible to catch your breath before the next one. It is also the most astute mash-up of love letter and take down of a popular culture icon since the brilliant "Galaxy Quest."

"The LEGO Movie" was an unexpected blockbuster, sweet and very funny, surprisingly ambitious in scope. This spin-off is more focused, its basic structure very much in the tradition of the...
