Clip: The Best Years of Our Lives

"The Best Years of Our Lives" is about returning WWII veterans, very appropriate for Veteran's Day. It is one of my favorite films, and this scene is one of my 101 Must-See Movie Moments

For Veteran’s Day: The Way We Get By

Director Aron Gaudet is the son of a "greeter," one of the volunteers in Maine who make sure that every soldier coming through the airport gets a warm showing of appreciation. He told me, "We started seeing these parallels, too, all of these people going off to war are concerned about mortality and so are the older people who are greeting them." This is a lovely film, and very appropriate...

Lost Preston Sturges Film: Hotel Haywire

A column by Michael Hiltzik in the LA Times about 700 "lost" Paramount films caught my attention. The first paragraph mentioned one of my favorite movies, "Alias Nick Beal," with Ray Milland as Satan bargaining for the soul of a politician played by "Gone With the Wind's" Thomas Mitchell. And then it mentioned a film I'd never heard of, written by one of my all-time favorite screenwriters (and later a...

This Year’s Best New Show: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

The only new show to make it to my DVR series list is "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," co-created by its sensationally talented star, Rachel Bloom. Each episode is a full-on original musical that takes place mostly inside the head of its slightly demented heroine, Rebecca, a Harvard and Yale-educated lawyer who walked away from her type-A career in a New York City law firm to move to West Covina, California, where her boyfriend from summer camp lives.

It has a tremendous cast of singers and...

What are the Most Successful Film Franchises?

PrettyFamous examined the most successful film franchises of all time.

[C}haracter-driven franchises with plenty of edge-of-the-seat moments can spur on the production of final chapters, sequels and prequels for years to come. The most recent example is, of course, the newest installment in the James Bond film series — “Spectre.” After gracing big screens for over 50 years, Bond’s legacy...

Interview: Johann Johannsson, Composer of “Sicario”

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic composer who created the moody, evocative score for the intense law enforcement drama, "Sicario." Previously, he wrote the score for the Stephen Hawking film, "The Theory of Everything." It was a pleasure to speak with him about the way the bleak settings and the emotions of the characters influenced his composition and how he used the music to help build the tension of some of the most intense scenes.

This was his second collaboration with the director,...

The Poem from Interstellar: Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

"Interstellar" features this classic poem by Dylan Thomas:

Do not go gentle into that good night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green...

Dylan Baker on Directing for the First Time in the Fact-Based High School Football Movie “23 Blast”

Dylan Baker is probably best remembered for playing some of the most horrific villains imaginable ("The Good Wife," "Happiness").  But his extensive career has included wild comedies ("Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," "Anchorman 2"), historical drama (he was Robert McNamara in "13 Days"), and even a musical ("Across the Universe").  He has just taken on a new role as a movie director for the first time with "23 Blast," based on the true story of a Kentucky high school football player who...
