BEDSIDE MANNER Available Now

BEDSIDE MANNER, the newest short tale of dark horror from the mind of Isaac Thorne is now available for download at most ebook retailers. Throughout history ghosts have haunted the imaginations of young children. On a few occasions, they have reportedly compelled those children to perform unspeakable acts of horror against the living. BEDSIDE MANNER documents one child’s attempts to resist.

“This is one of those stories that was inspired by a single creepy image,” Thorne says of the new story. “Sometimes there are things you see or experience that get kind of stuck in your memory. No matter how many times you recall them, they’re still as creepy as they always were, and there’s never an entirely successful way of vanquishing them. It’s sort of like they’re the memory equivalent of earworms.”

In this case, the creepy image Thorne couldn’t let go was one from his own childhood. In fact, it was a cartoon from the back of an old Alfred Hitchcock Presents Ghost Stories For Young People album. You can see a photograph of the album’s rear jacket at this nostalgia site.

“In the bed and under the covers is supposed to be a safe place for children, and it was for me. As cartoony as the back cover of that album was, there was something about the kid sitting bolt upright in that bed, all his hair standing on end and his shadow looming large on the wall, that totally creeped me out as a youngster.”

Although Thorne admits that he’s never actually seen a ghost, thinking about the creepy effects of that old album cover got him wondering how his younger self might have reacted had he ever seen one.

“The natural conclusion was that I would’ve thrown the covers over my head, like the magical shield that bed covers are for most kids. You have to wonder, too, why we think a thin sheet of fabric is going to protect us from a malevolent spirit that’s been able to summon enough energy to become visible to us inside our own houses at night, but that’s the mind of a child.

“What I started to wonder after that was what could such a spirit possibly want from a child? And that’s where the idea for this piece really caught flame.”

BEDSIDE MANNER is available for Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Google Play, Kobo, and from Smashwords.

Radio Play Adaptation of BECAUSE REASONS Coming Soon

FROM THE WEB: Producer and actor Liane MoonRaven has teamed up with the Banksy of horror, Bleeding Critic, to create an original radio play adaptation of “Because Reasons,” a short tale of dark comic horror by author Isaac Thorne. The production will air for the first time on Jan. 28, 2015, at 10 p.m. EST. Listeners can join the story from a variety of sources available at Carmen Online Theater Group‘s site.

About the Radio Play

Adapted directly from the short story by Isaac Thorne, the radio play takes advantage of the audio format to enhance the experience with ambient sounds and terrifying narration. Liane MoonRaven plays the demented Tiffany while Bleeding Critic narrates.

Story author Isaac Thorne says that the combination of the two talents ensures the listener a truly creepy auditory experience. “Liane MoonRaven is fantastic as the psychotic Tiffany,” he says. “Meanwhile, Bleeding Critic is filling a role similar to the Crypt Keeper in Tales From The Crypt, except with more creepy and less funny. As he often says, BC doesn’t do funny.”

In addition to the superb cast, BECAUSE REASONS features music from several talented independent artists, including David Bruce Davis, XaosLord, and Joona Latte. The audio was mixed with effects by Banana Audio. Listeners can find Bleeding Critic on Twitter with the handle @BleedingCritic. Liane MoonRaven can also be found there. Her handle is @LianeMoonRaven.

About the Story

[image error]Thorne says that he wrote BECAUSE REASONS as a means of reversing the roles of a familiar horror trope, the demented madman and the damsel in distress. Tiffany is an above average girl, an all-American dream. Her mother is a successful lawyer. Her father is CEO of two different tech startups. Her social skills are exemplary. Her mind is sharp. Her instincts? Killer.

But Tiffany has a problem. She’s bored. So bored. She has no idea what she’s going to do with her life. That is, until the night her mother dies right before her eyes.

“For years we’ve seen these strong, demented male villains pick on what we see depicted as a helpless woman,” Thorne explains. “If the woman is portrayed as strong, it’s usually a result of her overcoming some kind of personal attack or crisis. I thought it might be interesting to reverse those roles. I wanted to see what would happen when a bored barely grown girl just starts killing out of pure boredom.”

That night Tiffany decides she’s going to go out and have some real fun. Some blood-soaked fun. Because fun is powerful and power is legit.

Because being bored is worse than being dead. Because reasons.

‘Because Reasons’ Available Cyber Monday

[image error]Isaac Thorne, author of short tales of dark comic horror, has announced the Cyber Monday 2015 release of “Because Reasons”, his latest dark tale. The book is available for pre-order from Amazon.com, iBooks, Kobo, and Smashwords. The ebook will be available Cyber Monday—Nov. 30—for order and immediate download to most e-reading devices.

“Because Reasons” follows Tiffany, a college woman who has just discovered her own fascination with death and killing, on her murderous romp down a lonely desert highway. Her latest victim, an unnamed naked man, sits helplessly bound by her side throughout the trip, where he is forced to listen to her examination of her own inner demons.

“So many times in traditional horror it’s the woman who is the helpless victim to a psychopathic male aggressor,” Thorne explains. “In this case, I thought it might be fun to more or less swap the gender roles and just see what happens.

“I don’t want you think that I just took a traditional male psychopath role and slapped a female name on the character,” he continues. “Tiffany handles her psychopathy in a very different way than most male killers.”

Thorne adds that it is not his intention to rehash the traditional horror revenge tale, such as I Spit On Your Grave or Last House on the Left.

“Make no mistake,” he explains, “this is not your standard ‘woman gets attacked and then gets revenge’ piece. Although those stories are horror classics, I wanted to write a story in which the young lady was really and truly a villain rather than a victim. I wanted her to be someone you might feel guilty about rooting for if you even want to root for her.”

“Because Reasons” will be available Cyber Monday for 99 cents from most ebook retailers. It is also available for 75 cents directly from www.isaacthorne.com.
