Snow Like Ashes

scarlettsbookshelf:

Two Sundays ago I finished Snow Like Ashes by Sarah Raasch.

If you like high fantasy, read this!!!!!!!! I had heard good things about this book, so I was nervous it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but now I’m flummoxed how I don’t hear MORE about it.

So this is the gist. There’s eight kingdoms in this place, four Seasons and four Rhythms (although I’m still curious why rhythm?). The rulers of each…

Which celebrities would you place in each kingdom?

OH GOD. This is a fabulous question. And I am far too unworthy to answer it, as I don’t keep up with pop culture :( I mean, I know the “big” celebrities, but not enough about others to sort them.

Though I will say, again, always, that Ksenia Solo is Meira and therefore I’d put her in Winter. Because Ksenia Solo. Obviously.

You realize we must ask you these simple questions because your torture us with wonder cultures and hunky men. Can you blame us for wanting for know more?! ^_^

All I saw in this was “hunky men” and I kid you not, I heard Meira’s voice in my head go “DAMN RIGHT.”

We all know that we're Winterians fron the inside, BUT, based on your appearance, which are you, a Winterian, Summerian, autumnian etc?

Based on appearance…OH GOSH, prepare for another long rambly answer wherein I impart WAAAAY more information than you wanted.

(You guys are gonna stop sending me asks if I keep up these crazy long explanations for simple questions BUT I JUST CAN’T HELP MYSELF #sorrynotsorry)

So, my physical traits: brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin.

Based on this, I’d be some amalgamation of Summer (brown eyes) and Spring (pale skin). Sadly, no Season is known for having brown hair, though I did at one point have super bright scarlet hair. I mean, it wasn’t natural, but still.

Thus, I’d have to say I’m the weird lovechild of a Summerian and a Spring. Which brings up the topic of inter-kingdom children — not a common occurrence, due to the fact that the offspring of such unions aren’t susceptible to either parent’s home conduit. Which is a risk some people take, to be sure, but not many.

Though in cases where the offspring of an inter-kingdom relationship are linked to the conduit through the monarch’s bloodline (e.g., Theron, who is the son of the Cordellan king and a Ventrallan woman, or his cousin Shazi, who is the daughter of an Autumnian prince and a Cordellan princess), that child is linked to the dominant conduit. In Theron’s case, his father is the conduit wielder and his mother wasn’t at all blood related to Ventralli’s conduit; thus, Theron is susceptible only to Cordell’s conduit. With Shazi, her father was blood related to Autumn’s conduit and her mother was a blood relative of Cordell’s conduit. But because Autumn’s conduit is female-blooded and Cordell’s is male-blooded, Shazi’s dominant conduit is Autumn.

GENETICS.

(But what if Shazi’s parents give her a little brother? Or what if the royals of two different female-blooded kingdoms have a daughter? Hmmm…)

(No, those are not situations that come up in the SLA trilogy. Just fun things to think about.)

(And by “fun things to think about” I mean “totally nerdy and overanalyzed world building nonsense that only I really need to think about”)

Ya’ll may be confused as hell, but I LOVE THESE QUESTIONS. MORE PLEASE.

Will 'Ice like Fire' also feature the characters from 'Snow like Ashes'?

Absolutely! The whole trilogy is Meira’s story, though in ICE LIKE FIRE, Mather’s POV is brought in (but the majority of the story is still from Meira’s POV). The characters I’m introducing through the ICE LIKE FIRE Character Profiles are simply the new characters/kingdoms that will Meira will get to know!

ICE LIKE FIRE’s summary, if it hopes clarify things:

It’s been three months since the Winterians were freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared—thanks largely to the help of Cordell.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Theron sees this find as an opportunity—with this much magic, the world can finally stand against threats like Angra. But Meira fears the danger the chasm poses—the last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders the two on a mission across the kingdoms of Primoria to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe—even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Januari—leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception weaves tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom—and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter, but for the world.

Sometimes when I’m doing normal random things, I think about how fictional characters would do them

Like I’ve been working on an essay for the past few days and I’m here wondering what kind of essay writer Meira would be, would she be a procrastinator, or one of the people who does it in advance, or like me where you try to get it done early, but for some reason you can’t and end up getting distracted by everything a.k.a. the unintentional procrastinator…

She’d DEFINITELY be the last type! Good intentions but short attention span.
