#minutewriters - in which I feel very sleepy while talking about “feel/felt.” And I realize my exhaustion probably does not equal clarity so the gist of the video is: Using “felt” can be very distancing for the reader, so use that to your advantage and harness “felt” when the emotion you’re trying to get across is alienating/distancing, OR when you’re going for brevity, which is def needed at certain points in your book. But otherwise, try to make the reader feel the emotion without necessarily telling them that they should feel sad/happy/angry/etc. Yes, I realize this is a fun and painful writing exercise, but doesn’t ALL writing make us FEEL (

#minutewriters video! Brief note about “there.” As mentioned in the video, some examples from my own writing where I reworked “there” (as well as a few I kept!):
.
.
.
Changed “there”:
Would there be guards on the other side? —> Would guards be on the other side? |
There isn’t anyone in my whole country I can trust —> I can’t trust anyone in my whole country |
There, nestled alongside tufts of rock far off the coast, Lu saw new silhouettes. —> New silhouettes nestled alongside tufts of rock far off the coast.
.
.
.
Kept “there”:
“There’s my darling.” |
Ben looked at Jakes, whose face held pity at the duty he knew Ben faced. But something was there beyond sympathy: a reverence for their work. |
If they wanted to die, let them die—there were ways to survive, if they weren’t so stupid and proud.
