Today we catch up with author Claire Highton Stevens to chat about her latest book, pet couture and sandwiches.

1. New book! Exciting! Tell us about it!

It’s about Connie and Jenny who have tried and failed several times to make things work. In an attempt to get over her, Connie books a fancy holiday…only things don’t go quite to plan.

2. What made you get into writing?

Pure chance. I broke a leg and had time on my hands…so, I wrote a story for fun and then kept doing that…roll forward a couple of years and an author friend of mine, Michelle Arnold read one and insisted I publish…16 books later, here I am.

3. Are there any pets in your books, and if so, do they wear outfits?

I don’t often Include pets, but there have been a couple I think…I don’t tend to dress them up…maybe I should add some?

4. You definitely should. Anyway, for those who haven’t heard of you, describe your writing style in 5 words

Simple,Twisty, Trope, adventurer, Humorous

5. Describe your ideal sandwich

Subway 12 inch, cheesy Italian bread with steak, pickles, black olives…

6. If you could share the sandwich with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Well, there are so many. My parents mainly…they’ve been gone a few years now.

7. What 3 books would you take to a desert island and why?

Fantastic Mr fox – it’s just my favourite Kiss the girl by Melissa Brayden because let’s face it, Jessica.And then any random one I’ve never read before..

Trips to Sunakland Not ATOL Protected…

The latest budget announcements from Chancellor Rishi Sunak, which can be perhaps best described as “shit with a bow on” have seen very little to combat the rising cost of living crisis. The promise of a 1p tax deduction by 2024 (huh?) will do very little to help working families now, and will ultimately benefit the highest earners far more than those on the lowest tax bracket, who are already struggling to make ends meet – or so we’re told by people who understand these things.

But whilst we buckle down and light some candles and wait for 2024 when we might be about to afford an packet of Aldi’s own gingernuts for the staff room, we would like to give a nod to the fantastic response to the budget from Shadow Chancellor, Rachel Reeves.

Not only referring to Sunak as “Ted Heath with an Instagram account”, but also going off on a fabulous Alice in Wonderland* analogy; comparing Sunak to “Humpty Dumpty” who says “When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean”.

We looked into trips to Sunakland, to see if lower taxes really do mean higher taxes, but we could not find one that was ATOL protected, and with the economy as it is at the moment we decided not to risk the interns on a trip…

Help Save The Avon Centre

For almost 40 years The Avon Centre in Henbury, on the outskirts of Bristol, has been supporting disabled people to access the therapeutic benefits of spending time with horses.

The Centre in the 1980s

Not only are there physical benefits such as physiotherapy (relating to the building of core strength and muscle tone) but there are the mental health benefits of spending time with nature and outdoors that so many people missed out on during lockdown.

Beyond the Gait allows people to spend time in nature with Shetland ponies.

“The Centre provides a real sense of community to everyone who uses it,” says Centre Manager Claire Schimmer. “It’s not just about riding. The people who come here, be it as service users or volunteers, form real friendships that they wouldn’t find anywhere else. For some people it’s the only time in the week they get any social interaction. Lockdown has been particularly difficult for them so we are very pleased to be able to be offering our services again.”

The Centre took the opportunity of the Covid Lockdown to accelerate its plans to rebrand and extend its charitable objects to include disadvantage as well as disability. In the future they hope to be able to reach and support even more people.

“The Avon Centre is my lifeline for my physical therapy, mental health therapy and much, much more,” says Centre Ambassador Winnie. “Thank you for everything. I am forever thankful!”

However, the Covid Lockdown also meant that the Centre was not able to generate income for the 18 months of closure, whilst still having the same outgoings. Horse retirements and staff redundancies have reduced the Centre’s capacity to operate and finding the money to keep the doors open every month is becoming increasingly difficult.

A Crowdfunder has been launched to try and help the Centre stay open through the difficult winter period, and continue to thrive into the coming years.

“We have big plans,” said Claire Schimmer. “Extending our objectives means we can reach even more people and we’re already reaching out to other charities and groups to see how we can support each other. But unfortunately the reality is that if we can’t raise the £50,000 through the crowdfunder, the Centre will likely have to close within 3 months.”

What if? New from Inklings Press

Inklings Press has a new anthology out this week, and it asks the question, What if?

Alternate History is an increasingly popular genre, with more and more shows and books exploring possibilities beyond our timeline and reality. Here’s what the publisher had to say:

Have you ever asked the question “What if…?”

What if things had turned out differently, what if history had taken another turn, what if our world had gone another way? 

That’s the question at the heart of the genre of alternate history – and that powers the stories in the new Inklings Press anthology, Tales From Alternate Earths 3. 

Alternate history has had quite the renaissance in recent years – from TV shows such as The Man in the High Castle, an adaptation of the Philip K Dick novel, to the HBO series Watchmen, and more light-hearted adventures through history such as Timeless or Legends of Tomorrow. Even Disney is getting in on the action with their “What If?” series looking at what might have happened if key moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had gone differently. 

That’s the fun of it – there’s so much range in the genre, but all so close to home that it could just be the slightest difference that takes us there.

That difference is usually called the point of departure, the moment when history departs from our own. That can be something huge – an alien ship arrives, say – or it can be a tiny difference. In one of the stories in the new anthology, it hinges on a man having a pair of boots. 

Stories in the book span the world, from Hitchcock directing Titanic to a hunt for Jack The Ripper, from Cold War chicanery to a Roman Empire that never ended, from mythological beings turned real to post-World War Two genetic experiments. It’s a big canvas and it’s great to see what the authors involved bring to the table. And that’s not even getting into stories where we wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise!

There are stories by Alan Smale, Daniel M Bensen, DJ Butler, Minoti Vaishav, Brent A Harris, JL Royce, Jeff Provine, Ricardo Victoria, Rob Edwards, Matthew Kresal, Aaron Emmel, Christopher Edwards, EM Swift-Hook, Jane Jago and Leo McBride.

In an interview with Newnewsnibbles Leo McBride told us:

The great thing about alternate history is that it shows what could have happened if only things had gone slightly differently. Now, that could be for the worse – but what if history could have changed for the better too? So much hinges on small moments in our past, and the possibilities? Well, they are endless!

60% of People Would Back a Progressive Coalition of Sooty and Sweep, Survey Finds

In a recent survey conducted by Newsnibbles it was discovered that 60% of the respondents would back a progressive coalition of Sooty and Sweep over voting for the two main parties, given the choice.

In comparison only 5% were happy with the current Conservative Government and 35% would choose the Labour Opposition. If this isn’t a wake up call for the two main parties we don’t know what is.

When asked why Newsnibbles did not include late edition to the show; Sue the Panda in the survey, Managing Editor, Badger said:

Well, the thing is with a Twitter survey, you only have a certain number of characters and also we did not want to muddy the waters of a perfectly good political survey by bringing gender politics into it. Should Sooty and Sweep be elected I’m sure Sue could have a nice cabinet position like “Minister for lady things” and feel suitably important, as long as she didn’t get too shrill in parliament.

Whilst we have yet to approach Sooty and Sweep about the possibility of them running, these survey results speak for themselves. The nation is ready for a change, so Izzy Whizzy, Let’s get busy!

Bingeable Boxsets – Pride Edition

Happy Pride month Nibblers! To celebrate we’re going to do a weekly post of bingeables that we’d recommend with great queer rep! If you’ve been watching anything great that you think we should check out, let us know in the comments.

For Week 1 we’re gunna do SUPER SERIES!

Whilst the superhero movie industry continues to be a sad letdown when it comes to queer rep, either straight washing characters altogether (Okoye – we’re looking at you) or giving us the slightest flicker at a flirtation before bringing back a dead lover to avoid any possibility of queerness in the plot (mmmhmm Wonder Woman 1984) the series do much better in terms of representation.

DC absolutely smashes it out of the park with Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine, Supergirl and Batwoman.

Black Lightning follows school principle Jefferson Pierce as he shapes young minds during the day and patrols the streets as the electrifying super hero/vigilante Black Lightning at night! The series doesn’t pull its punches when dealing with issues like race and police brutality in America. In terms of queer rep Pierce’s daughter Anissa (AKA Thunder) is openly lesbian. Her parents completely accept her and we don’t have any of the tired cliches we usually have to tolerate with queer representation. What we get here is a lesbian super hero – no drama. Well obviously there’s drama, but not about being a lesbian… you get it.

Legends of Tomorrow sees former Arrow regular Sarah Lance offer some time travelling bi representation. The series doesn’t take itself too seriously, and is much lighter in terms of subject matter than Black Lightning. Sometimes the representation can be a bit awkward (in earlier series it felt rather like Sarah had to keep kissing random people to prove she liked all genders!) but it’s fun, and as the series develop so do the characters. It also has regular guest appearances by John Constantine, the bi warlock, who sometimes helps, sometimes hinders the team as they try to fix the timeline. Some of the characters are a bit annoying, and the plots can be outrageous, but it is fun and compelling, so give it a try.

Supergirl is not backwards about coming forwards with its political opinions, and overtly dealt with the issues in America during the Trump administration, including immigration and white supremacy. Whilst if you read the internet “ships” you would not be blamed for believing that Cara Danvers (aka Supergirl) and Lena Luther are a couple – this not (yet) in fact the case (come on writers – be brave) we still get queer rep in the form of Alex Danvers (Cara’s sister) who comes out as a lesbian, and the Nia Nall, aka Dreamer who is the first trans superhero on television.

Season 1 of Batwoman blasted to our screens with the incomparable Kate Kane donning the cowl of possibly the most famous lesbian superhero to date – Batwoman. The first series was strong, and I particularly enjoyed the different relationship between Supergirl and Batwoman in comparison to their male counterparts, who spent an entire film comparing sizes whilst Wonder Woman weakly attempted to interject. In comparison, the two communicated, and talked out any disagreements and came to amicable compromises. When Ruby Rose decided to leave at the end of series one, I was dubious as to how the series would continue. Would they recast Kate? How would that work? But I would go as far as to say that what they did has made the second season even better. Javicia Leslie has made the role completely her own, and the decision to make the character of Ryan Wilder Batwoman, instead of recasting Kate Kane has allowed the series to explore different issues. For example, Kate was still a billionaire, with all the privileges that come with it. Ryan is an ex con who starts the series living out of her van. It has given Series 2 of Batwoman a whole new dimension and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Whilst Marvel series are a bit disappointing from a representation point of view, in the interest of fairness I will give a shout out to Runaways. It’s a bit teenage angsty, but it does have Karolina Dean and Nico Minoru who have a very teenage angsty relationship… for those of us who weren’t born this century, there is also the cast of parents, who are a who’s who of 90s TV, which is quite fun, and a cameo from Liz Hurley also makes the series worth a watch. There is also a dinosaur, so there’s that.
