Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa

I’m backing a Kickstarter of Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, stop motion film that looks amazing! Only wish I could afford one of the sets or go visit for the audio tour, or even attend the premiere.  Maybe a I should start a Kickstarter to fund my Kickstart.  Hmmmmm. No, seriously, this looks like a great project. I’m looking forward to seeing Kaufman unbound.

Secret Comics Projects

I learned to read from Dick and Jane; I learned to love stories from comic books. I started reading and collecting them in the mid-70’s, so it’s no surprise that one of my writing dreams is to do a comic. That dream is very close to becoming a reality, one that I can’t tell you a single thing about…until later. Stay tuned!

Book 3: Shadow on the Sun

The third book in the Durango series is title Shadow on the Sun. It will be published in March 2013 (there is a cover of it on Goodreads, but since it’s not the final cover, I’m not going to post it here).I’ve turned it into my editor, and edits are being done. It will probably come out in Arc (advanced reader copy) this Fall. I hope to have copies of ARCs for my Fall events, especially ALAN/NCTE in November  Shadow on the Sun will be the last book in the story of Durango and Vienne, which is to say that there may be more Mars books in the future, but not with this particular set of characters. I’d be lying if I said I won’t be missing them.

Walden Award 2012 Announced

The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN) of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has announced the finalists for the 2012 Amelia Elizabeth Walden Book Award for Young Adult Fiction. Established in 2008 to honor the wishes of young adult author Amelia Elizabeth Walden, the award allows for the sum of $5,000 to be presented annually to the author of a young adult title selected by the ALAN Amelia Elizabeth Walden Book Award Committee as demonstrating a positive approach to life, widespread teen appeal, and literary merit.

The 2012 Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award finalists are:

The Berlin Boxing Club by Robert Sharenow (HarperCollins); Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys (Philomel Books); Blood Red Road by Moira Young (Margaret K. McElderry Books); Shine by Lauren Myracle (Amulet Books); Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall (Lee & Low Books)

All Walden Award titles will be identified by an award sticker—gold for the winner and silver for the four finalists. The winner will be announced on Monday, July 23rd. The winning title and finalists will be honored on Monday, November 19th at the 2012 ALAN Workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be invited to participate in a panel discussion.

NCSLMA 2012

October 4–6, I will be a guest author at the North Carolina School Library Media Association, a group that was kind enough to nominate Black Hole for an award this year. Other YA author guests include Beth Revis, Carrie Ryan, and John Claude Bemis, who will be delivering a presentation for the Toast and Tales Breakfast.

Dragon*Con 2012

Over Labor Day weekend 2012, I will be speaking at Dragon*Con in Atlanta Georgia. Last year was my first Dragon*Con, and I’m really looking forward to going back this year. The list of guests is amazing, as always, and I’m glad to see that some of the folks I met last year will be back. My schedule isn’t ready yet, but if it’s anything like last year, it will be full. I’ll post info as so as is is ready.

ALA 2012

I will be attending the 2012 ALA conference June 22–26 in Anaheim. Though I’m not signing in the Harper booth, I will be at the Harper breakfast and then out and about in the exhibits hall, haranguing librarians. If you’d like to be harangued or just say hi, I’ll be the middle-age guy with a beard, glasses, and an egg-shaped head.

Gone Fishin

Because I have three classes to teach this summer and so that I will actually finish the last of the Durango books, I will be off social media for the duration. If you need to reach me, I will be checking email.

Y’all Come to YALL FEST

From MTV Hollywood Crush:

We’re pretty confident in saying that the only place you’ll find a more stacked lineup of YA authors than this year’s YALLFest is the teen section of your local Barnes & Noble. Because for the second annual meet-up dedicated to all things young adult, organizers Margaret Stohl, Pseudonymous Bosch and Melissa de la Cruz (pictured) are welcoming 48 authors—25 of them New York Times bestsellers. And guess what? We have the EXCLUSIVE lineup for you to scrutinize!

Keep reading after the jump to see if your favorite writer will make an appearance in South Carolina. (And let’s be honest, with nearly 50 RSVPs, the chances are pretty good!)

The official lineup includes: Kwame Alexander, Jennifer Lyn Barnes, Holly Black, Pseudonymous Bosch, Sarah Rees Brennan, Heather Brewer, Kiera Cass, Cinda Chima, Cassandra Clare, Andrea Cremer, Katie Crouch, Gitty Daneshvari, Melissa de la Cruz, Matt de la Pena, Kim Derting, Simone Elkeles, Elizabeth Eulberg, Gayle Forman, Kami Garcia, Adam Gidwitz, David Macinnis Gill, Adele Griffin, Deborah Harkness, Jenny Han, Siobhan Vivian, Michelle Hodkin, Ellen Hopkins, Tonya Hurley, Michele Jaffe, Caitlin Kittredge, Alyson Noel, David Levithan, Stephanie Perkins, Diana Peterfreund, Kathy Reichs, Brendan Reichs, Beth Revis, Jessica Rothenberg, Carrie Ryan, Eliot Schrefer, Natalie Standiford, Trenton Lee Stewart, Margaret Stohl, Cate Tiernan, Robin Wasserman, Marjorie Wentworth, John Corey Whaley, and Kathryn Williams.

Literary Friendships is the theme, so it’s only fitting that “Mortal Instruments” author Cassandra Clare and “Spiderwick Chronicles” author Holly Black (real-life BFFs, duh) will deliver the keynote speech on that very topic. And, of course, there will be plenty of panels, events and performances to warm your literature-loving hearts.

YALLFest takes place in Charleston, SC, on November 9 and 10. Be sure to check the official YALLFest website for all the details.

Is this amazing stacked or what? Do you plan on attending YALLFest? Sound off in the comments and on Twitter!
