He stared at himself in the mirror, in search of…what, who knew. He splashed some water on his face and looked again. Maybe he should try holy water or some other miracle that would change what stared back at him. He saw the hint of dark circles under his eyes and he hated it.Vanity wasn't the issue, the dark circles were a reminder of the turn of bad luck that had plagued him for almost two years.Like a series of snapshots, he always ran the images of that day through his mind. The one that marked the beginning of when it all started going to shit with no end in sight. Well, more than usual at least. The day his last steady foreman project ended because the owner faced trafficking charges and fled the country to avoid his impending capture. With assets frozen, the site was closed down and everyone was out of a job and a steady paycheck. He'd left work early to seek comfort in the arms of his partner, an eternal optimist, and found him busy giving comfort of a different type to another guy."Asshole," he mumbled into the towel as he dried his face. Maybe a shower would work. Even if it didn't wake him up, at least it would wash away the disgusting reminder of the South Florida blazing summer heat and humidity.Freshly showered, Julian read the classifieds as he sipped his coffee. He closed his eyes and exhaled, enjoying the caffeine and sugar slowly bringing him to life. Finally. He skimmed the want ads searching for anything new that morning, something he hadn't already called on that week. He grabbed the monthly community paper and spotted the listing with a large bold headline "Handyman Wanted for Repairs". A long list of requirements followed, far beyond those for a traditional handyman. He exhaled sharply and frowned. He had seen this a lot lately, another potential employer taking advantage of the desperation in the workforce, wanting to hire someone for nothing. The laundry list of responsibilities read like the licensing exam for a contractor, not a handyman's job description. Cheap bastard. "Contact Mr. Boner" it read toward the end, followed by an address and phone number. He couldn't resist smiling at the play on words."No wonder Boner wants a handyman." He chuckled.A knock at the door interrupted his morning read through the ads."Hey, Jules, you in there?"Julian cringed, not just at the nickname he hated so strongly, but at the voice he knew came to deliver bad news. He reluctantly rose to answer the knock."Hi, David," he said as he slowly opened the door to greet the short, paunchy landlord."So, you got my rent this month?" David asked hopefully."I'll have some money for you by the end of the week." He rubbed his hands on his towel and looked away."That's what you said last week." David shifted to cross his arms in an attempt to intimidate.Julian looked down at the short man and couldn't blame him for trying. He knew David well enough to realize that he didn't have a choice but to push at this point. He figured the guy was getting some unneeded pressure from the boss."I gave you some money last week.""That was to cover the rent from two months ago. What about last month or this one?"Julian's head began to hurt. This had been the ritual almost every day for the last month. He was a creature of habit, but there were some customs he wished would change."David, I told you I'd have some by the end of the week. I just need a little time.""That's what they all say!" His landlord raised his arms in frustration."Look, I know I'm late, I'm not denying that, but at least when you come knocking, I don't run and hide from you like your other tenants. I said I'll have money for you at the end of the week and I will. I've never backed down on my word.""Yet, you're late on your monthly payment.""And I told you I would be. Fuck, David, I said I was going to be late and you agreed it wasn't a problem as long as I paid you something each week. I'm doing that." He rubbed his shaved head roughly."How much? Will it be enough to cover the two months you owe me?" David pleaded."I don't know. I'm guessing probably not by the end of the week.""Jules, I can't keep doing this.""I know. I just need some time," Julian said quietly, looking away as he rubbed his wrist cuff."Why don't you sell your truck?"Julian looked at him as if the burly man had sprouted another head. "Dude, I'm not selling my truck. I need it for work.""Please, Jules, I like you, but I can't have you livin' here for free. You know that. My bosses are pushing me for the rent. I need two months' rent by the end of the week or they're forcing me to kick you out of here."Julian could see both frustration and understanding in the man's eyes. He'd known this day would come. Had dreaded it for the last few weeks. He rubbed his head and looked away. He tried to make an honest living, avoided trouble, and where did that leave him? Standing in his doorway with a towel around his waist trying to think of ways to scavenge up two months' rent just to be back at square one again. He couldn't think of anything to say so he simply nodded.David looked at him and patted him on the shoulder. "Jules, you're a hard worker and a smart cookie. I'm sure you'll find a way."Ugh. First Jules now cookie. Seriously?"Thanks, David," he grumbled, hoping that would give the man the signal to turn and leave.Mission accomplished. He closed the door and leaned his forehead against it. He blew out a deep breath, willing a new idea to blindside him. He thought of different quickie jobs and crossed each one off for different reasons. Well, he always had the option to sell his ass on Eighth Street, but who was he kidding? No one would give him two months' rent for his bits. He laughed at himself. He had to. It was the only way he'd remain sane when life gave him the shit end of the stick. He turned to see the newspaper still sitting on the table. He walked over and grabbed his coffee and gulped the little bit of remaining java along with his pride.If the guy needed a handyman, he was going to be the best damn handyman that cheap bastard had ever seen. If that didn't work, well, Eighth Street was actually starting to sound pretty damn good.


My Review:
An excellent start to a new series that's emotional, fun, heart breaking and touching all at the same time. I have to say, I've read quite a few MM romances. But never one with so much emotion. It's a nice change up for me and I really enjoyed it. Kudos to you Jaime :)
Matthew has lived a different and somewhat difficult sort of life. Most of it, well, many truths are kept hidden from those he loves in fear he'd no longer be loved. He's also lost some years of his life right along with some other things of importance all because he's such a kind, loving and all around great man.
He begins to see all of this about himself and more all because of the handyman he hired to help make his dream a reality, Julian.

This story sure lived up to its title! Both main characters grew to amazing heights as people by the end and made me love them more. I look forward to where the author will go with the rest of the series.

Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting back story, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

It was the free price that first grabbed my attention but it was the well developed plot that kept me turning the pages. This book has it all...sexy alpha werewolves, an unforgettable cast of characters, romance with a bit of erotica, suspense with unexpected twists that keep you guessing, and an ending that has you downloading the sequel "The Keeping" along with the other books in the series. The Mating is reminiscent of the Middle Ages, were frequently arranged so that both families involved would benefit from the alliance, whether for political purposes or to gain wealth, property or prestige. Elise, our 19 year old virgin heroine has been raised knowing what was expected of her as the daughter of the Alpha. Kane, our hero is the kind, practical, hot sexy new Alpha of a neighboring pack. Nicky writes in a way that really pulls you into the story. You feel like you're actually there, seeing everything take place. The books are long enough that the plot and characters are very well developed. But all too quickly you get to the end and are reaching for the next book in the series.

Chapter 3 Excerpt:
...the man shrugged and gave her a slight smile.  “That’s Marla.  Just ignore her.  She has some ...issues.
Watching the woman slide up to Kane and rest her hand on his arm while smiling brightly, Elise wondered what the ‘issues’ might be.  Somehow, she just knew that Marla was not going to be welcoming her to the pack.

A blur of choco­late brown fur ran past him and he spun around, stunned at the sight. Was that a...? Dammit, it was!
A quick glance around re­vealed that there was no one on the street, but just in case, he ducked down be­hind a car to shift into his wolf form. Once he trans­formed, he took off after the lit­tle fe­male were­wolf. She was run­ning as if the demons of Hell were chas­ing her. He sent up a quick prayer that no an­i­mal con­trol of­fi­cers were around and that she didn’t run across the road and get hit by a car!
He raced after her, his longer legs quickly eat­ing up the dis­tance be­tween them. They were com­ing to the end of the road, a play­ground was straight ahead. Bryan scanned the area, thank­ful no chil­dren were about, then put on a burst of speed. He was al­most upon her when she started to veer to the left. Quickly cal­cu­lat­ing her path, he cut across at an angle and leapt, slam­ming into her as she ran in front of him.
The im­pact sent them both rolling across the ground in a tan­gle of legs and tails. A cloud of dust bil­lowed around them and Bryan sensed rather than saw her turn­ing around, prepar­ing to bite her at­tacker. Ag­ilely, he twisted away, the sound of teeth click­ing to­gether let­ting him know he’d had a near miss. Be­fore she could make an­other at­tempt, he hip-checked her, knock­ing her off bal­ance and then scram­bled around to strad­dle her. Grip­ping the scruff of her neck firmly in his teeth, he is­sued a low, warn­ing growl. Cau­tiously, Bryan re­leased the scruff of her neck and nuz­zled her ear. She whined in re­sponse, tilt­ing her head and ex­pos­ing her throat. A rum­ble of plea­sure sounded deep in his chest.

He got up and cir­cled around, sniff­ing her thor­oughly. The scent of arousal was be­com­ing stronger and the wolf in him fairly danced in ex­cite­ment. Mov­ing so they were nose to nose, he nipped and licked at her face, rub­bing against her, mark­ing her with his scent. She re­turned the favour, her breath­ing turn­ing into ex­cited pants.
Her scent was in­tox­i­cat­ing and he couldn’t wait to get closer. She seemed to feel the same way, stand­ing and bump­ing her body into his. Lick­ing her muz­zle, his human side won­dered what it would be like to kiss her full plump lips. No sooner had the thought crossed his mind, than he shim­mered and changed forms, using the power of his own trans­for­ma­tion to pull her along with him. A banging on the door brought him out of his reverie and he realized he’d showered on autopilot. Wrapping a towel around his waist, he made his way to the door and opened it only to be greeted by his new employer’s glowering face.
“Are you drunk?” She spoke bluntly, eschewing all the normal social niceties and barely gracing him with a glance before staring around the room.
Damien raised his eyebrows at her tone, then followed the direction of her gaze. The empty whiskey bottles lay on the floor by the chair in which he’d spent most of the night. “And good morning to you, too. No, I’m not drunk, only pleasantly numb.”
“Good. We don’t have time to waste waiting for you sober up. If you’re going to drink, do it on your own time.”
“And when is my own time?” He leaned his hip against the nearby dresser and folded his arms over his chest.
“Whenever I say.” She flicked her eyes over his mostly naked body, showing no signs of embarrassment. “Get dressed and meet me downstairs in the kitchen. We’ll talk while you eat.” Without further ado, she turned on her heel and left.
Damien straightened and pushed the door shut fighting to keep an unfamiliar grin from his face. God, she was a spitfire. And cool, too. He had no false modesty over his appearance. It was a well-documented fact that women still swooned over him, but she hadn’t even batted an eye.
Drying himself off, he dressed and made his way to the kitchen at a leisurely pace despite the fact that he knew she meant for him to haul ass. Samantha Harper could bark orders all she wanted. He’d obey only when it suited him. And right now, it suited him to piss her off.

Damien leaned against the brick wall, its rough surface lightly digging into his shoulder through a rip in his shirt. He was breathing hard, sweat trickling down his face, the still, heavy air doing nothing to help cool him off. With each inhalation, he took in the scents of the city; exhaust fumes, garbage, humanity… The back alley of one city smelled very much like that of another though this one had one significant difference. Lycans.

The she-wolf across the alley from him had her butt propped against the edge of a dumpster, her hands braced on her knees as she stood, half hunched, trying to catch her breath. The fight they’d just completed had been exhilarating as she’d matched him move for move. He’d barely needed to hold back; her speed and agility making up for what she lacked in size and muscle. Already, faint aches and pains were letting themselves be known, and no doubt in brighter surroundings he’d find a fine array of bruises decorating his body.

Grabbing the edge of his shirt, he gave his face a quick wipe, careful to keep one eye on his opponent. When Kane had described the petite female who acted as Samuel Harper’s spokesperson, he’d made her sound ineffectual. Damien had pictured her as demure, perhaps carrying a clipboard and peering over her glasses. While it was true she might not look like much of a threat, the last few minutes had shown it wasn’t wise to underestimate her. He wondered if Kane had set him up; purposely leaving out the information that the woman packed a lethal punch. Thanks, buddy.

Pushing off from the wall, he swallowed, wincing slightly at the pull of his dry throat and wishing he had a stiff drink. But there’d be time enough for that later. Instead, he focused on her.

“We done?”

There was a pause in her breathing and then he saw her nod.

“Yeah. I think we’re done.”

Had he really heard a hint of laughter in her voice? Damien eyed her speculatively as she straightened from her braced position. At some point their battle had moved from the street to the alley where they now stood. The faint light from a single bulb over the backdoor of a restaurant was the only illumination. It wasn’t much, but he was still able to make out her features. Short, dark hair, a petite yet muscular build. An alley fighter—a damned good alley fighter—and a female. Who’d have thought?

My Review:
A great start to a new series that kept this reader turning its pages to the very end. Jam packed with hotness, fun and emotion. A great read for any fans of the genre.
Chrissy left her home town some time ago for various reasons. One of them being to pursue her dream career. She's just about succeed in that area and had to go back to her childhood home to help out her brother. What she gets is a TON of bad luck with a side of good. One of the good things being a new found love with an old friend...

This was my first time reading anything from this author and I really enjoyed her writing style, characters and the whole shebang! I look forward to what's to come :)

Mystical creatures of all types have held a piece of my heart for as long as I can remember. Dragons, unicorns, pixies, elves and many more have always invaded my dreams. They still do this day. "It's All in the Tips #9"The more I think about it, the more I can’t believe, all of that just happened and in my workplace of all places! I hope Marcia and Darla don’t give me a tongue lashing about being too easy or some shit.
            Even worse! I hope I don’t get fired if word of this reaches my boss! I really enjoy working here and I need to continue to work here. It’s like my second home. I’d be lost without it.
            I’m not saying or even thinking that I didn’t enjoy each and every second of his…oral invasion. I loved it! I’m just a bit…unnerved. Yes I tend bar and there’s a popular misconception that bartenders, both sexes, are very easy, but I’m not the type of girl to tongue wrestle with a guy without knowing him a bit first. It takes even more for us to full out nekkid wrestle, with oils and… Never mind that!
            Tat sighs to the right of me, “I can see you’re thinking-overthinking the situation actually, and very unnecessarily. You worry too much, it’s not healthy. You know that right? I know you don’t know me just yet. Heck, I don’t know you. One thing you have to know right here, right now. I’d never let any harm come to you or your reputation. Nor would I take advantage of you. This…what you and I have-it’s something very special. I’ve waited all my life for this and I can wait a bit longer. I’m in no rush. I just could not resist your tempting lips and enticing scent. The way you taste is…”
            He lets out a groan at the end and runs both hands through his hair, leaving it in sexy disarray. I’m so tempted to run my fingers through it to feel if it’s as soft as it looks.
            Thinking of a comeback, but falling a few seconds short because Marcia comes up behind him, “we tell her that all of the time. This chick needs a vacay or to get La-…”
            I let out a groan and scold her, “Hush woman!”
            I love my friends, but sometimes they’re too embarrassing for words!
            “Okay, okay. My lips are zipped. But he is right whether you want to admit to it or not. So there!”
            She has her hands on her hips and is tapping her foot in impatience. I make to stand from the piano seat. But can’t because Tat is still between my legs, comfortably. He doesn’t look like he wants to move from the place he’s been kneeling. He actually looks quite comfortable between my legs. He begins to rise, pausing to place a kiss on my temple. Then he turns to Marcia and holds out his hand.
            “Name is Tatius. It’s nice to meet the woman that’s claimed my cla- my friend’s heart.”
            Smiling Marcia grabs hold of his hand, “I was wondering when we’d get to meet. It’s great meeting you Tatius. My name is Marcia. I’m this chicks BFF.”
            She says pointing at me with one hand as shakes his hand with the other then briefly stiffens. It’s so quick and brief. If I would not have known her and her body language as much as I do. I wouldn’t have noticed. I wonder what caused it. Her face isn’t giving anything away. She’s actually smiling like a giddy kid. Which is the norm for her.
            I’ll make sure to ask her about it later on.
            “I was just asking Renee if she’d come with me for some coffee or something when she’s all done here.”
            Marcia allows her hand to fall back to her side and chuckles, “So that’s what you two were doing huh? Thank the stars not everyone asks like that or the entire planet will be sucking face for all eternity.”
            I snort. Can’t help but to. She’s a freaking riot! Tat seems to think so too because he lets loose a full belly laugh which shocks me a bit. Even his freak’n laugh is sexy!
            “On a more serious note. We’re all done and ready to lock up so whenever you’re ready…”

            I feel horrible. They did everything for me, again. Closing up is not all that bad as long as there’s no party, but still…
            “Thanks woman. I owe you three.”
            “You bet your ass you do chica! Now let’s blow this joint!”
            I look to Tat, his eyes gleaming with humor as he watching Marcia basically skip back toward the front. He holds out his hand and I grab it. Once again feeling that zap or zing flow through me…

            The diner is pretty empty. Everyone else declined when Renee and I asked if they’d like to join us. I’m glad they all said no so I can have time alone with Renee, but she looks a bit nervous.
            We’re sitting at an intimate table for two. There’s a fake flower in one of those narrow glass vases sitting in the center. We’ve each ordered already and made up our coffees. Renee is spooning in one more sugar cube. I love how she made hers light and extra sweet, just how I make up mine. I’m not sure why. But this makes me very happy. Certain breeds of shifters need the extra sugar. Well not so much need it, but crave it. Especially my breed, our breed, if she truly is what I think she is.
            She also ordered rye toast with two side orders of bacon. Those are two of my favorites to order as well. But I order an omelet with corned beef hash, well done and only one side of bacon with two orders of rye toast. A great compromise I think. 
            We sit in silence, eating for a bit. I break it after half of my food is gone. “Tell me about yourself Renee.”
            She pauses, about to put her last bite of toast in her mouth, “what do you want to know?”
            I lean forward, a little closer to her and look her in the eyes with a smile, “everything…”
